what do people like balihus daniel wang and royksopp have in common? they write nice things like this about our (not so) new talent kid on the block. polosh superproducer maximilian skiba! music from a very good young polish producer, warm chords, funky melodies, think bass and guitars by chic meeting a string section by beethoven, with a touch of italo-disco and almost flamenco-like soul daniel wang he produces very nice italo disco tracks, im a fan royksopp. shanghouse is an instant hit. i would say instant classic if this wasnt so daft and meaningless. if you just heard it 5 times and feel the need to put it on another time. thats shanghouse by max skiba. then theres a great remix by victor rosado and a great slightly diverse prins thomas edit of korsakot another track.

after a string of stellar releases with proper trax, cult trip, and mystical disco, grey people graces cgi with his latest. raised in chicago and currently residing in nashville, alex michalski treats us to another side of his sound as he completely forgoes sampling to give us four tracks of raw, stripped-down machine funk. the tunes presented here are culled from various hot and humid sessions in his home studio, armed with an arsenal of equipment old and new and cultivating a sound as diverse as it is nasty. witness the pluralist industrial jackin’ utopia that is grey people—from the crunchy, dissonant piano stomp of *trench foot*, and the equally crunchy, driving, new wave dirge of *moonstruck*, to the cosmic drift and thump of *lock the box* and the funked up fm slap-bass of *wild intentions*.

kypski is also the 4 time national turntable champion of the netherlands and has won the dutch dmc finals. apart from being best known for his project c-mon & kypski he was part of the turntablism band the waxwankerz and is currently active in the matangi string quartet

vanguard sound follows up on guerilla soul’s self-titled ep with label co-head chris mitchell delivering feng shui flow. feng shui flow is an exploration into deep harmonic textures in the form of three distinct offerings. a1 primordial gravitational waves- as the name suggests, inspired by the possible discovery of gravitational waves believed to be reverberations of the big bang. staccato bass and drums provide the heavy background for a pulsing bass wave, accented by synths and chords conjuring up visions of interplanetary manifestation. b1 eurínome- melancholic and intensely emotive chords and bass layered with intricate drums to paint this impression of the mysterious water goddess. b2 4th density- a synth heavy offering with several layers of bass, string like patches, and a sprinkling of choral sounds driven by a pair of kick drums into a plane of telepathy, harmony and ascension.

proximas debut album, alpha, released through tempa, follows on from a string of blistering singles for the label, which found the dutch producer carving out a stark and synthetic vision of 140bpm club music. across its eleven tracks, alpha sharpens his already distinctive aesthetic while significantly broadening in scope. it is a manifesto of sorts, centred firmly around his characteristic, titanium-hard dubstep mutations, yet comfortable taking spaced out voyages through melody-soaked electronics, freaked-out sci-fi funk and vocal-led songs.

bristols facta and hodge are a pair of rising young producers who, more than most, have absorbed the influence of tempas early music and wielded it to create something defiantly their own. hodge has been on a powerful run of form over the last two years, with a string of acclaimed 12 inches for livity sound, idle hands and hotline striking a unique balance between brutalist sub-bass muscle and vortex-like whirls of voice and percussion. factas releases for soundman chronicles and idle hands have been equally striking - dark, hypnotic and dread-filled rollers for the moodiest of dancefloors. you can hear both producers approaches vying for attention on this collaborative 12 inch, and the resulting tension turns the atmosphere electric.

ukrainian duo woo york blast back to soma with yet more hypnotic, analogue based techno with the siberian night ep. the duo are on fire right now after a string of releases on their new home label of soma and this ep is backed up with a remix from the glasgow based edit select who bringing his own, unique stylings.

after its initial string of records, spring theory is back with its third release of the year: the record is let me love & steal, the latest ep from avalon emerson. in the past few months, emerson has moved from san francisco to berlin and has taken in her new environment s vibrant club culture, and it shows. but this four-tracker is a far cry from the dark industrial cliches that typify foreign expectations of the german capital. instead, her cuts here carry an undertone of playful sampling that balance out the sheer power and energetic intensity of her rhythmic drive — aka its a full eps worth of hard-hitting house music with even more of her idiosyncratic flair.

as one of the more distinctive minimal house operators in these times, ion ludwig makes for a snug fit over at trelik towers, and with this three tracker its not hard to see why his records vanish quicker than you can say baby ford. 46 lj + felix ballad is a refined groover with a fine balance between gritty low end chunk and gossamer top-end, working subtle hits of bass and illustrious string sweeps into the mix to great effect. em carpet meanwhile darts out into more obscure territory, keeping the beats to a minimum and focusing on warm and fuzzy synth tones cycling

chmmr is the dance music making moniker of even brenden hailing from, oh yes, all the norway. having released on luna flicks, relish this time is the right time for his debut on full pupp. the unmistakably sparkling chmmr sound stands for long hypnotic, tracks, simple in a way, but oh so grooveleaden, sick bassed continuously panned patterned with a string theme makes sure you never forget which song it was that stuck in your ear last. it was either lyd & bilde or ... np hard - oh yes. last not least thomas adds an own remix version with an epic mythical persion twist. persion version is a full. inshallah!

having made a nice splash for himself with his recent outing on delusions of grandeur and recent string of quality releases on his own imprint, shadeleaf, we are proud to welcome in thatmanmonkz for our next release on kolour ltd. he serves up three immense cuts of deep, underground rhythms with that infamous touch of soul that is quickly becoming his own trademark. remix duties were laid upon someone weve had our eye on for quite some time now - glenn astro. his unique musical vision & precise execution is on full display with his remix of remember and the end result speaks for itself. needless to say were very excited to have him in! altogether its an exceptional package of tunes more than worthy for the 16th slot in our kolour ltd catalogue!

the prolific lord of the isles (aka scotlands neil mcdonald) has had a string of stunning 12 inches over the past few years on labels such as permanent vacation, unthank, shevchenko, mule and of course his four track > year of the city ep< on phonica, which was widely acclaimed upon its release in 2012. this time loti presents two long-form tracks, each a mini-masterpiece in itself. the 10 minute plus >greane< bursts into life after an intro of kicks and white noise hi-hats. it continues to slowly build, with pitch-bent synth lines and a pulsing bass-line making way for a melacholic shift in mood. truly original stuff! on the flip, a swirl of synthetic strings introduces ‘gigha’, in a manner that brings to mind rhythm is rhythm’s legendary ‘kao-tic harmony’, before the drums and infectious acid-line join in. over the 8 minutes they continue to interweave and play off each other to dazzling effect. artwork by jack featherstone, the designer of a number of sleeves for border community (including the highly praised campaign behind james holden’s ‘the inheritors’, its singles and live visuals), electric minds, warm and of course, phonica.

masaaki yoshida aka anchorsong has been winning friends here in the uk and internationally throughout europe with his live shows, and yes we do mean live: yoshidas music is created with a sampler and a keyboard, from scratch at his gigs. sometimes these sounds are augmented by a string quartet.

harry agius has been making waves as midland since 2010, releasing a series of increasingly impressive 12”s as a solo artist but also collaborating with the likes of ramadanman (pearson sound), breach and pariah on labels such as aus music, naked naked, works the long nights and his own graded imprint. he is also a prolific remixer who has lent his talents to artists such as lone, guy gerber, julio bashmore, dusky and more. we can proudly say he came to many people’s attention via his first phonica 12” ‘play the game’ back in 2010 and he has remained a friend and regular at the shop ever since. midland’s well deserved rise has been a delight to watch from the sidelines and we’re glad to welcome harry back to phonica with the fantastic ‘before we leave’. it starts slowly but surely as reverb soaked percussion comes to the fore, cushioned by the truly beautiful string melody, which we’re sure will be stuck in many a head this year! this could well be midland’s most deftly handled arrangement yet. running back’s gerd janson wisely decides to stick to the original track’s feel, letting the strings weave their magic, yet also brings the bassline and drums to the forefront. delicately but expertly done. midland rounds out the 12” with his barebones drums and percussion-only ‘bonus beats’ version, perfect dj tool material. we wish more records had these!

groove line records completes the summer schedule with the third 12” in our series of properly licensed rare disco / funk reissues. next up is another title from the collector’s holy grail, the brothers’ promo 12” for the 1976 album don t stop now. this features one of the most sought after instrumental tracks of the 1970 s, under the skin. a luscious disco orchestration with full horn and string sections playing alongside an infectious conga groove played and arranged by warren schatz and his band, the brothers. the second side has long versions of two tracks from the album, brothers theme and make love. both tracks have the same hallmark of luxurious string and brass sections as under the skin with the brothers providing the driving grooves and bhen lanzaroni coming to the fore with his keyboard skills. all groove line records releases are fully licensed and taken from the original master tapes, remastered by nick robbins at sound mastering, and cut by matt colton at alchemy (mastering engineer of the year 2013). all vinyl is heavy weight 180g manufactured optimal media in germany, one of the world’s finest pressing plants. groove line records cut no corners when making sure that each and every one of our releases has the highest quality performance possible. the next three 12s are due in the autumn. groove line records’ deluxe reissue of under the skin is an essential purchase for any serious disco, jazz or funk vinyl collector who demands the very best in quality vinyl pressings

d3 recordings offshoot d3 elements is only three releases deep, but already their releases are reaching must-check status. following their recent release of a superb ep from us deep house veteran brian harden, the paris-based imprint offers up something a little different - an ep of gorgeously deep and melodic flavours that joins the dots between head-nodding instrumental hip-hop and floor-friendly 4/4 fare. there are plenty of surprises, too, including techno stalwart terrence parker delivering a flute-heavy downtempo head-nodder, some gorgeous beatdown from detroiter mike clark, and a thrillingly string-laden chunk of deep house bliss from the aforementioned harden.

richard burkinshaw and james rial aka audiojack have been at the forefront of underground electronic music for nearly a decade now with the duo dropping their first full length ep on 2020vision in 2006, entitled white noise. here the duo return to the label with a fresh single, following recent output which saw them collaborate with lcd soundsystem’s nancy whang for a single on gomma, and a string of material and remixes on their hugely successful gruuv imprint.

traumer aka romain reynaud has been plugging away of late with a string of fresh material surfacing in 2014, much of which has seen the blossoming producer pick up support from the likes of mr.g, franck roger, and doc martin to name but a few. here we see romain join the roster of loco dices desolat imprint. across the double pack we see traumer skilfully explore a range of styles, opening cut hoodlum eases us in nicely with a bass-driven, funk-infused groove fuelled by jazzy melodies and gritty drum sounds.

the album is featuring their production as well as compositions. with instrumentations by tenor and beats procured from the vintage gear of jori hulkkonen in his turku studio, alppihouz by willis, the album has a warm feeling and yet sufficiently exciting for the electronic house heads. there are plenty of string pads, flutes and flute pads, etc to prick up your ears. cola&jimmu once again capture the genuine, old school sound.

this year has been a time for throne of blood to stretch out a bit. following a string of well-received singles exploring the quirkier corners of the dancefloor (dj chloe, brioksi, pleasure planet, bohemian groove, pbr streetgang) as well as moon rock a long-percolating exploration of modern ambient music, we are dropping a springtime megabomb aimed squarely at the big room.

after his debut lp event horizon which came out earlier this year exploit shifts to exploring the inner space rather than outer space. melancholic downshift is full of synthesized string sounds and atmospheric arpeggios. the b-side, shift down, uses a similar syncopated rhythm for strings, but eventually developes into a large dancefloor-bomb.

barely has the dust settled on the first cold tonic, yet label boss krystal klear is back already with two more heavy hitters for tonic002. building on the foundations of the debut release, dance 7fs shows a darker shadow rarely seen in previous krystal klear music. moving into lights out, eyes down territorywith the driving breaks of west end disco, this is kk stepping into his own. fumer tue features relics-esque string laden melancholy but never ever goes fully pg. this is r-rated lovers music and, if the feedback is anywhere near the mark, could easily go straight into last-tune-of-the-night-classic territory for the next generation of dance music connoisseurs.

circling sydney as the most prodigious producers in their adopted home, tuff sherm (perth-born eugene hector / dro carey) and cassius select (canadas lavurn lee / guerre) guise-up for a split 12 that follows dros seven-date debut european tour, and cassius breakout one ep on gardlands hunter gatherer imprint. returning home after a string of releases via merok, ramp, opal tapes and the trilogy tapes, tuff sherm shifts the counter balanced brilliance of dro carey with beast numeral - a six minute succession of classic house jaunts.

these tracks are fairly special in our opinion and we are very honoured to be releasing them as the first optimo music disco plate.noo are daze dasen (aka plastique de reve) and sami liuski (aka bangkok impact / putsch 79). this is a double a side 12inch single (plus a digital bonus track that we couldnt fit on the 12inch and still have maximum pressing volume). built out of imaginative sampling combined with analogue hardware, these tracks are phenomenally produced, lush disco string fuelled epics that fully work their magic in a club setting. this is modern disco, most definitely not nu disco.

killer ep of hypnotic late-night techno from the rapidly maturing dark arts imprint. the brooding * point blank* kicks things off, combining twisted low end darkness with eerie orchestral stabs and immense claps – a darkly elegant opening. next up, * panic* is an essential joint, riding in on a tightly-controlled broken rhythm before a unique, string-heavy motif provides the intrigue. side 2 opens with the tensile funk of * downstream* – a sleek, driving dancefloor offering to get lost in, with space-aged atmospherics and bristling percussion sitting astride a tunnelling techno groove. finally the motorik * ricochet* combines submerged dub textures with slinky synth work – a strong closing statement for this towering record. tip! with support from the likes of dvs1, nd_baumecker, answer code request and alex do, dark arts is becoming an essential label.

unxpozd presents the 7th project from dj aakmael, the rise ep. the lead tune -rise- is a blissful, relaxed string based track with playful keys thats perfect for any chill lounge or dance floor. jazz piece is a sampled piece of art, where aak cuts and chops a vintage groove for the 2014 crowd. many have already hailed it as something that has that old nj deep house feel! on the flip side, aak gives two more untitled gems. untitled 105 is a dope club thumper that takes you back to that headknod feeling, perfect for any dance floor who liked to groove! last is untitled 101, thumping beat with dramatic horns and strings to conclude a well-packaged project!

this first 12 contains new versions from daniel avery (phantasy), who released a striking debut album last year, as well as a string of much-played 12 inch singles. the 12 inch also contains a remix from invisible conga people (dfa), which marks the return of this elusive act, who recorded a fan-fave 12 inch for dfa in 2011, and have not been heard from since.

premium quality vinyl reissue of the highly collectible promo-only 12 inch *i, i, i* by unlikely balearic heroes the osmonds. first released in 1979, this fruitful collaboration between the proto-boyband and legendary pop-disco producer maurice gibb is a wonderful slab of chugging syncopated cosmic disco rock topped off with lush string arrangements which despite being criminally overlooked at the time of its original release, has recently garnered much favour with balearic aficionados. also surprisingly good is the flipsides *you re mine*, a more live sounding affair, coming across like steely dan met chicago at studio 54 and hit the studio on the way home. dont miss!

hypnotic groovin 4 tracker! leaving behind trendy peak-time sound, io delves deep into the depths of house music and takes to it like duck to water. firstly, jazz riffs and abundance of syncopation, draw attention to themselves and make the sound more >mature< and original. samples, without which it is difficult to imagine io are softer and deeper, rhythms are slowler. thanks to the creative production techniques, percussion grooves organically develop into melodies, this will most certainly please real music lovers. following a string of differently brilliant ep projects, io are finally releasing their debut album. the outlet for the album release is, a very well known to io fans, label mulen. without any exaggeration barefooter can be called a longplayer - album, as it consists of 14 tracks, 10 of which will be available in digital format and 4 only on vinyl.

cyber dance records return with a full-length double-vinyl album from manchesters kid machine (aka mark wilkinson) following a string of instantly sold-out eps for viewlexx, red laser and flight recorder. a long-time collaborator of world-famous italo disco dj flemming dalum, it is no surprise that many of the tracks have that hallmark space sound reminiscent of the likes of cyber people and koto, but mark stamps his own distinct identity on the genre by slowing down the bpms and incorporating many other influences throughout so that this is no retro affair but a distinctly fresh and modern take on the genre.

having released on some of the most influential labels, it is with great honor that audio culture welcomes the montreal based artist, nautiluss, to the family. the solstice ep consists of three tracks and finds nautiluss exploring warmer, more euphoric territories, and he does it right whilst still retaining the boldness and toughness of his past work. the ep flows effortlessly from the big string euphoria on solstice to the darker tones on corvus passing the slightly off kilter shuffle on neptune. without a doubt these will heat up any dancefloor in the cold winter months ahead.
