ethimms second ep when in dark delivers the groups signature tension music with moods oscillating between suicidal heartbreak and conciliatory optimism. in the opening track why (a cover of the rhythm and sound classic), producer elisabeth thimm sets the stage for guest singer veronique to mourn love s loss, while brian gimmel s improvised piano licks hold strong agains the songs relentless bassline. the follow-up track late features lexx s dreamy lyrics gracing a subtle dance foor tune for spaced-out souls. the b side opens with ethimms love for dub. next is a freaked-out meditation on what has been and will be, while the fnal track done slowly creeps towards its peak, refecting on dark days where light may have not been much in sight, but going forward sees optimism, increased resolution, and drive.

kindred spirits boards of canada and teebs make an appearance in dreamy collaboration with odd nosdam s sisters remix ep. throughout, the producers split time between cosmic, slow burning beats and reflective soundscapes littered with intriguing textures and mind-bending samples. analogue sounds are generous and knowingly manipulated. gorgeous samples are deployed, sturdy yet emotional. cymbals explode. when the sun finally breaks through on an overcast day, sisters was very much inspired by that wonderful moment and the longing for it.

resplendent in its simplicity, forever is the sound of emika boiled down to her steely essence. gated vocal snippets and haunting synth arpeggios give a nod to early-90s proto-trance, the arps filtering in and out of focus in tense fashion before unfolding into a dreamy melodic progression ‘never’ treads similar ground but takes a more direct approach, the tension building consistently in layers as more arpeggiated synths gently modulate in hypnotic fashion shimmering, icy sounds create a haunting, slow-burning atmosphere before the rhythm switches up for the latter half of the track, layers of gated white noise further punctuating the groove. emika deftly utilises each element for maximum effect, allowing each to breathe and shine by way of slick production and clever arrangement.

jelly roll soul cohort jamie alexander makes his production debut with the scottish party crew’s second release. the aptly named ‘the stutterer’, opens proceedings, rocking a stunted, pittman-like groove whilst b1 ‘the growler’ furrows a more subterranean path - all dark grubby beats, disembodied voices and a menacing bass line. closing track ‘the dreamer’ contrasts neatly, with a more wistful and err dreamy vibe.

the excellent field label embarks on a new mini trilogy of eps that will -present a magical journey through modern-day trance.- first up in the series is artefakt with their three track effort the final theory. dutch producers robin koek and nick lapien make up artefakt, and between them they excel at moody voodoo music on labels like delsin. they open this latest ep with the title track, a deep, spacious house roller with subtle pads and gentle acid that perform slow motion acrobatics for nearly ten minutes. it is suspensory, dreamy music that works on the head as well as the heel. moving horizon is then less doleful and introspective but just as deep, with sweeping pads add a sense of scale, busy drums bring the dynamism and icy percussive sounds adding a sense of urgency. last but not least, solaris is a fatter, more physical groove with claps and gloopy bass, acid flashes and trancey pads all fleshing out a lush and deep electro workout. this is heavenly stuff that cannot fail to get inside your head and heart.

polish wunderkind selvy inaugurates no bad days with the pops ep, four tracks of tropical & grandiose house music. pops opens up with a bold statement in ‘wishing well’, a peak­time epic with the sort of disney­via­john carpenter sweeping flourishes. following that is ‘basics’, perhaps the most playful of all the tracks: all bouncy synth melody, groovy bassline and dreamy pads. on the flip, ‘bump pump’ is arguably the most energetic helping on the ep, a percussive workout with gongs and all. if crash bandicoot was to make house music, this is close to how he’d sound. rounding the release off is the title track ‘pops’, perhaps the most original and subtle track with colourful vhs synths and strange sounds pinging across the mix.

strength lies in calmness – and vice versa. marcel fengler returns on imf and offers three new inspirited musical pieces that protrude from the club context just as well as cater for your home stereo, picking up on the diverse musical moods defined by his debut album fokus (ostgut ton, 2013) while concentrating on intertwining sound aesthetics. with “kyu” laid out on the a-side, this new 12- starts off with a delicate yet muscular floor-pleaser – its subtle 4/4 rhythm is counteracted by lush claps on 2/4, but the true finesse comes in form of its varying rhythmic details, crisp hi-hats and underlying, subtle melodies, most notably the twirling organ trills, sustained synth pads and alienated shout outs. “shitau” on b1 picks up on these introverted and adoring musical moods with more organic bell percussion and swelling synth layers adding a more cinematic touch to the complex rhythm patterns—then pausing for a short dreamy break, gaining speed again before culminating in a grand finale. “zen” follows up with intimate string arrangements until fengler varies the tone and tempo with tribalist percussion and a lush kick drum. this ep is an ideal companion, whether you re pruning your bonsai or branching out a club set.

berlin duo soukie & windish are releasing their second long-player work ‘loom’ on their home label ‘ursl records’ this coming may. an album for the moment, looming its way through our moves with its dreamy, escapist moods. loom carries accents of dirty micro-pop while managing to be both upbeat and deep simultaneously. it is an album of tension — pushing out through every carefully selected drum and every distant, distorted synth line. it marks the moment when you decide not to go home.

with the new sublabel ourselves established under the roof of the well-known o*rs crew from leipzig, a new label has been launched which can without a doubt be called a matter of the heart. production, graphic design, promotional shipping, in leipzig truly every single step remains within the family. with the now appearing compilation imagination the newly born baby ourselves directly presents itself in the best possible light. kicking off the sampler is düsseldorf-based artist sello. the house track characterized by its analog drums, deep chords and snotty bassline completely places his bet on deepness. in his very own catchy way, it sure is the perfect entrance into the musical debut. the second track of the release, a collaboration of jan ketel and his partner in crime siggatunez, shines through its very dynamic and driving buildup. the title being a graceful tribute, it carries the name of the eponymous berlin club farbfernseher. nevertheless, such a warm and dreamy house track might as well serve as the perfect commendation for the first open airs of spring. the flipside impresses with a ruff and dirty club track by berlin-based producer braunbeck, which self-ironically manifests itself particularly through the self-recorded vocals. as a true humorous banger, the track adds even more musical depth to the already outstanding release. the completion of the compilation and therefor also the most technoid track of the release is contributed by perel. a tool-like classic, standing out through its massive kick and hi-hat called felene hischer. nasty, groovy and timeless, just how we like it!

after a spot of chronological chaos last time out, nado regain their numerical composure with a sumptuous four tracker from new york renaissance man quinn lamont luke (bing ji ling) loose and limber after a chakra aligning cover of loose ends for phantom island last summer, the paqua frontman brings his linen suit and boat shoes to the good ship nado, joining moonboots and boardman for a relaxed session of horizontal dancing. taking a pleasant vacation from his trademark blue eyed soul, qll packs up the mic and lets the music do the talking, treating us to a dreamy quartet of instrumental grooves.

midgar welcomes the bordeaux based von grall delivering four dense, immersive cuts. first of the list, *a secant line*, is an acidic and powerful mantra, opening the gates of sonic virtuality. in the second track, *the slope*, fast paced rhythmics and cold ambiances bring some severity to the record. on the bside, the melodic and slightly dreamy excursion *apply the definition*, while *limit value* close the record with a solemn concoction of offbeats drums and mechanic nightbirds.

with the release of their last album “smoke” (2013) dapayk & padberg moved to a listening oriented direction, that also works perfectly off the dance floor. the new single “sink this ship” underlines their decision to follow this path in the future … maybe even with their upcoming album “harbour” later this year. on “sink this ship” eva padberg unfolds her matured voice, which shows more confidence than on previous records. dapayk skillfully puts her voice in a common scenery, where the straight beats are long over and where is space for extravagances and inventiveness. however, this is not a radical change turning away from the club sound. two of the most sought-after remixer artists at the moment, robot koch and bebetta, ensure the suitability for the dance floor. robot koch skillfully disassembles (for which he is known) the original. primarily he builds his version on the emotional base of eva’s vocal part and dapayk’s warm bass line. however, on the flip side, there is almost a contrasting change. the slight melancholy of the original track gives way for a typical bebetta techhouse beat, that flows through the club in a dreamy, yet simply irresistible manner.

the debut release for kalyma on connected, the brixton/berlin based label distributed by kompakt records and run by terranova and stereo mcs. a1 laydown original kalyma teams up with his friend, singer and songwriter peter stanowsky. the song was written during a relaxed and loose jamming session in late summer time at their home studio. the vocal performance is surrounded by a groovy and very percussive beat. after a long, calm intro a hypnotic bass melody kicks in together with more percussive elements in order to get up to full speed. the catchy bass combined with the repetitive vocals gets the listener in a driving, rhythmical, dreamy mood lay down was made to enable smooth transitions in the dynamic range of a diverse house dj set, without loosing energy and create a special intimate, percussive vibe

stone cold classic, although pastime paradise has been reissued a couple of time on compilations every single reissue has used the rocky lp version which is not nearly as good as the original 7inch cut. as we at athens of the north like to do things right we went back to the sony tape vault and had the 7- version transferred for the first time since the o.g 45 was cut. this 45 sounds fantastic, much stronger then the o.g 45 cut so its a no brainer. on the flip we took one of our favourite track from the lp and introduced it to 7inch for the first time, mambotango is a dreamy sountracky latin disco number i used to spin on warm up duty, very new york.

catz n dogz ready the next 12inch on their vinyl only pets raw and refined offshoot step. this comes in the follow up to records from a1 bassline, eduardo de la calle, andre kronert and the label owners themselves and marks the return das komplex who offers up his all for love lp. hailing from koszalin in poland, das komplex is undoubtedly an artist of many talents, a full time architect by trade, he has released material on father and son records and tapes label and also offered up the extolled and coveted 6th pressing on the step imprint back in august 2015 a record that sold out rapidly after hitting the shelves. now, his return marks the first foray into long-play format for step and allows das komplex to stretch his legs across 8 masterful disco grooves. diem kicks things off to a sunny start with sizzling guitar licks and softly pattering bongos before the slick italo-tinged obelisk and the richly atmospheric redukcja dysonansu poznawczego follow up. the project spreads out towards the jubilant and dreamy all for love which leads into brukiew, an introverted but ultimately feel-good conclusion that wraps up a beautifully balmy collection and another coup for step.

after putting the band on the map with their first ep two years ago, the band feathered sun has grown into a life of its own. the more live sets they have played, the better they have defined their style. they are spearheading a brand of sound healing music abstractly narrative, always poetic, sometimes flirting with darkness but always perfectly produced to carry the audience into their own world. feathered sun are the collaborative experiment of nu, jo.ke, raz ohara, chris schwarzwaelder, iannis ritter and acid pauli johannes laumer. each have active and flourishing solo artist careers, albeit still have time to collaborate with one another. the six-strong collective are a close-knit troupe who are primarily based in berlin and lima, peru. live improvisation is ultimately what brought the feathered sun project to life - they are open about their laidback, impromptu approach and this is apparent throughout this ep. side a was primarily crafted in peru by chris schwarzwaelder and jo.ke with raz ohara’s mesmerising vocals. the end material was then sent to nu in berlin who crafted two tracks out of it. the ‘bulbo’ ep shows a willingness to explore different approaches within the collective and the music showcases their long-standing affiliation. it is a downtempo ep that has immaculate instrumentation, dreamy pads and brooding vocals throughout. this is intertwined with organic sounds and moody atmospheric melodies, gives the release a timeless and emotive ambience.

for the second bad barbie records vinyl release of 2016 we are more than exited to bring you the magnificent work from the bla bla music owner daniel sanchez with his impromptu ep. here we have four amazing pieces where each one tells a different history. the first one pearled into droplets saw the light after a great live jam and the result is combination of several layers of base elements with subtle minimalistic articulations. these, in combination of the bass and synths lines do create a truly amazing micro house piece. the second one vague, is an atmospheric dub were a single synth chord raises in slowly, followed by a very subtle kick and bass line to set a bit of rhythm to the whole thing, creating a superb dreamy vibe while the chords do their thing with delicate reverbs and delays in the backend. a great musical piece indeed. for the third track we have yi, again another amazing micro house jewel born from a live jam, but this one is even more energetic than the first one and it also includes, besides a rocking bass line, analog synth chords that lifts up the mood during specific moments, which also do their part articulating themselves perfectly with some occasional twisted vocals that helps create an amazing party vibe from beginning to end. and if this wasn t enough we also have bedroom stories vocal tool that daniel included with his delivery, which can help spice up a dj set with ease.

according to white material pair galcher lustwerk and alvin aronson, their first collaborative album under the studio ost alias contains a mix of breezy electro, aquatic dub, high speed jit, and shimmering atmospherics. while clearly tongue-in-cheek, it s a fairly accurate description. certainly, there s a fluidity, moodiness and palpable sense of atmosphere at the heart of scenes, which casually drifts between hard-edged club workouts, hazy post-club fare and dreamy, horizontal experiments. it was apparently recorded over a three-year period, during jam sessions at various new york studios. its the spontaneous aspect of its creation that has the biggest effect, and makes the whole thing feel like fleeting snapshots of moments in time.

hans berg and johanna knutsson return to the ufo station with their fourth release, a powerful trippy trip, through warped time and space. and guess who was waiting for them at the station? well,none other than fellow space traveller dungeon acid, who delivers a remix that just might knock your space pants off. the title track alien power is obviously inspired by the quantum fusion core phase shift warp power engine that drives the ufo station, a steady beat to keep you on the right side of the force, whereas the dungeon acid remix is a musical interpretation of the great warp speed interdimensional flux mishap of the year 2216. the track dubby is so named because it inherently describes the core feeling of the track! alien choirs and synched synths meet long delay lines in this dreamy piece.

last year saw the mysterious garage shelter make their debut appearance on skylax, and little is still known about them! all we know is they are back with some freshness on the skylax classic sublabel. first up is bring back love, a track that will sink its claws in with that infectious vocal sample hook. sticking with the old school sample vibe is the lonely heart dub of attempt, it’s a bit more mellow but still has plenty of groove in it. friend of the garage shelter, dj la foudre, appears over on the b side with it’s alright (signal st mix). still on that catchy sample tip, it features one of the grooviest bassline and funky guitar pairings i’ve heard in a long time. next up, perception 66 is a smooth house affair from yet another friend, asa no hikari. rounding out the package is garage shelter’s own you (still), a dreamy pad-driven track that may indeed be the pick of the release. while we don’t know much about garage shelter, we can’t help but look forward to what they come out with next!

the new release from help presents works from various help-releated artists. another release from the arhus-imprint that doesn’t directly state club-proof, but still, this one wouldn t mind having a spin or two by your local dance pusher.the opening track is by central, a ripe house tune with both melodies and good-vibes - probably the closest this young man has come to making an anthem. next up is the four piece group maizena with an ambiguous rhythmical ambient-house jam from the area of denmark with the least rainfall. on the b-side you’ll find a raw and to the point recording of dj sports and c.k joining ph 1 in his throwback techno-studio in the suburbs of arhus. next up is the long awaited debut from manmade deejay, who has been cooking a floating rhythm jam for this 5 course meal of modern danish cuisine. last but not least amsterdam-based kaap joined central on a fine day at rubber studios to create this dreamy and galloping ride. all in all this genuine piece of wax is filled with local devotion and love from the help-crew. thanks for the support!

after having brought you the critically acclaimed japanese house compilation once upon a time in japan, jazzy couscous introduces one of the most promising artist of the french deep house scene, hugo lx.having worked on a strings of releases in early 2016, french producer hugo lx (courtesy of balance, my love is underground, faces) comes back with another four track offering, with help from fellow french man, korea-based fulbert, on the remix duties. expect some sample-built, bass heavy, deep fried pieces from the nomadic beatsmith, merging influences from japanese dreamy ambiant, french vaporous soundtracks and american deep dance music. this ep will without a doubt be on heavy rotation on the dancefloors this summer!

alex aq constructed “don’t break” and “shake it” as a reflection of the sounds heard at the club. pounding drums, rhythmic, scattered synths, white noise, and choice vocal snips that send you into a trance are the core characteristics of both tracks created by the cubanmeister.
on the flip, myles serge of knotweed records and his own label (ms) remixes “don’t break it”, taking it in a trippy direction, with 808 drums and dreamy stabs that sound fresher than ever.
last but not least, lpz’s own techno duo p. lopez & octavio take “shake it” and turn it into a techno monster consisting of heavy stabs and an undeniable groove.

tominori hosoya is the project of japanese track-maker tomi chair and for the past years he s been on a steadfast journey in the land of soulful house. his most recent offering on mixxrecords entitled life goes on ep includes four tracks, three originals and one brothers vibe remix. starting off with over the sadness, the first piece is a laid back groove with a solid bass backbone animated by classic house hi-hats. strategy meeting gets peppered with wobbly synths, giving the cut a seemly acid vibe against a steady percussive background. with 32-33 (one decision), tominori delves into his tribal side, keeping the focus on exotic drum patterns. the dreamy synth melody provides a contrasting yet fitting backline. for his remix of strategy meeting, brothers vibe goes full force and turns the track into a peak time floor killer, with a hypnotic percussive line, a solid project for certain!

italian producer and be free label head jäger makes his debut on underyourskin records with a haunting ‘mystical journey‘ that turns out to be a playful minimalistic techno approach in the beginning, before evolving into a dark synth driven and more techhouse dominant tune gaining its dancefloor eligibility with a heavy baseline. louis kolben, part of agents of time, takes on the technoid approach to create a wobbling stomper that could easily tear in any location it is played at. ‘mizar‘, the ep‘s second track, partly connects with regards to content to ‘mystical journey‘ but focussing merely on that dreamy aspect that claims its listeners and leads one to a state of trance. steffen sonnenschein builds up the track slower to delay its peak that hits heavily when the synth sounds are let loose and set the pace throughout the end.

with releases on rush hour, mister saturday night and delusions of grandeur, nebraska is a man who needs little introduction. here, he delivers and amazing ep for heist, showcasing his talent for finding those catchy, but hard to pin-down samples. the soften the wireless ep navigates nicely between disco and house with 4 originals and an amazing tom noble remix. khans bargain will be the go to track the more disco minded listeners out there, with a catchy-as-hell synth line that you wish youd made up yourself. the remix, courtesy of nycs finest disco selector tom noble, goes on a clubbier path, turning the silky smooth original into a distorted house jam full of delays and filtered drums. the b-side sees nebraska turning towards the housier side of things himself, with the blues as a perfect example of minimalistic house. here, he uses only a small amount of elements to create an intoxicating and intense groove. it wont be long breezes through with a lighthearted arpeggio and some lovely dreamy vocals to set a more emotional vibe. ep closing track (digi only) varkala is somewhat of a special track, being dug up from an old hard disc and remastered for your listening pleasure. sincerely yours, lars & maarten

next in line to work with underground imprint getme! is uk artist nicky otter, with gme012: i can t really explain (it), a two track release out on 14th march across vinyl and digital platforms. across the ep, nicky ventures between parameters of ambient electronica and big, bad club tracks. nickys outsider sound find its perfect home on london s getme! label, both artist and label undefinable by genre, shape or sound. a-side i can t really explain (it) is a straight call for the dance floor for those after sounds on a more house and garage tip. originally trained as a drummer, nickys percussive talent shines across this bassy number, complete with creeping melody and layered vocal samples for a track nodding to club edits from a nostalgic time gone by. moving into murkier territories, b-side sketch original slow is journey through the darker strains of electronica, hazy techno feels and euphoric ambient vibes. dreamy melodies and carefully mapped out drum patterns meet here, giving sketch original slow an other-worldly feel.

when we started heist a few years back, our idea was to give a stage to talent in a same way as we have had a helping hand by the labels that have supported us from the beginning. therefore, i’s our pleasure to share this release with you by newcomers ouer, a berlin based duo with only a handful of tracks out so far on their self released debut last year. their approach to producing is very much jam based, and with a compact collection of synths, drum machines and a fair level of distortion, they succeed in creating their own sound with hints of classic electronic music from chicago and detroit. theres a nice mix of energy on the whole ep, the ascent being the most driving track of the package. fans of classics mcde tracks will love show off with its dreamy dx7 style chords and cracking acid lines. move over feels like a jam session that was way too much fun with some lovely solo work on the synths, whereas mess around goes down in similar free-ride style on the synths and again, has some lovely sampling going on. an impressive ep were just all too happy to have on our label. sincerely yours, lars & maarten
