as noted on another release (see ropin), cornell campbell has enjoyed one of the longest-running careers of any jamaican singer, and he is blessed with a readily identifiable style too. he began his career for clement ‘sir coxsone’ dodd in 1956, when rhythm and blues held sway in jamaica, and later cut some ska songs for king edwards. he then passed through the sensations in the rock steady phase and worked as a solo singer at treasure isle, before returning to studio one with the eternals, scoring huge hits such as ‘stars’ and ‘queen of the minstrel’ as the 60s gave way to the 70s. his greatest phase of popularity was them brokered by hit-making producer bunny lee, who kept him on top right through the 1970s and into the 80s. the 1975 album dance in a greenwich farm was first issued on the grounation label in the uk. along with a re-working of ‘stars’ re-titled ‘the sun,’ a re-working of ‘queen of the minstrel’ as ‘girl of my dreams’ and the sound system opus that is the title track, the album has the boastful ‘conquering gorgon’ and a number of keenly-observed cover tunes, including a cut of the gaylads’ ‘no good girl,’ a version of the heptones’ ‘why did you leave me’ and a killer cut of the uniques’ ‘watch this sound’ (based on ‘for what it’s worth’ by buffalo springfield).

the aristocrats were originally from bridgeport, connecticut, but came to philadelphia in 1973 where they recorded five tracks with bobbi eli at sigma sound studios. only one single was released, the philly classic “let’s get together now” on warner brothers records. original pressings can fetch up to £150. the expansion pressing here is extra special as the ‘b’ side “loving you is mellow” has never previously been released on 7” or vinyl. it is in fact the original version of a song later made famous by major harris but in it’s own right an exceptional piece of philly magic.

the voices of east harlem were an ensemble of vocalists who for just sunshine records recorded two albums under the direction of leroy hutson and curtis mayfield. “cashing in” is one of their most classic songs, a highly sought after track on original 7” fetches between £40 and £80 on the collectors market. first recorded and released in 1973 it has all the hallmarks of a leroy hutson composition and an established audience that crosses the boundaries of northern, crossover and modern soul. the song is coupled here with “take a stand”, another highly regarded and sought after modern soul room dance floor tracks, never previously released on 7” single until now

dimensions recordings explores its darker side on an introduction part 3 with intergalactic oddities and twisted techno constructions, the release is definitely ones for the late hours. ‘crosstalk’ from gear heads london modular alliance opens, a squelching, electro, hardware excursion demonstrating a small snippet of what’s to come from the talented trio. next, french artist, upwellings steps up to demonstrate his purist approach as he unites elements of dub and techno to create the beautifully spacey ‘soft shadows’. the third offering comes courtesy of fachwerk label boss and prolific techno artist, mike dehnert, who presents raw but melodic track in ‘tokio,’which maintains his minimal and stripped back aesthetic beautifully. chicago’s steven tang in his obsolete music technology rounds off the release with ‘comb freq,’ a devastatingly powerful mix of acidic, bleeping dance floor energy!

cosmopolis is an electronic music release from artist fonemi. this work is inspired by the novel cosmopolis by don delillo, a book that tells of a modern odyssey along the streets of a great metropolis. the four pieces here, composition of cosmopolis, sounds as the soundtrack of an introspective journey rich in ancestral suggestions and forgotten rituals recalls over time. the undervalued atmospheres that characterise the whole work seem to be held in suspension by a percussive magma that marks the passage of the past that becomes present. cosmopolis is a fluid that carries our lost memories.
cosmopolis: a tribal and primitive dance, a propitiatory rite that has been handed down unchanged over the centuries.
fiori carnivori: what you do not expect, the flower, a symbol of delicacy and sensitivity that turns into an inexorable predator.

new from stonedwave (founded by chip tronic), who has lately been active for both the kugkmusique and the oyabun labels comes a collection of powerful dark wonky techno tracks who have been created for freaking out on the dancefloor while still creating pictures in the listeners mind. the tunes have been selected and tested by dj wotta mess. the latter has been doing the warm up for dont radio show which is a regular internet event before jerome hill s london based events.

a strange confluence of sound that sounds part krautrock synth label brain records, part hyperdub. techno haze and synth wormholes with spectacular sound design that has banged at berghain and soundtracked winter night drives. greenspan is known mainly for his work with junior boys and jessy lanza and taraval is a longtime touring member of caribou, but both have released several 12” and eps of electronic exploration over the past few years. inspired by synthesizer minimalists like jd emmanuel, cluster and john carpenter, the two attempted to create a type of dance music with hardware that was indebted to their influences but did not feel intrinsically retrogressive. the idea was to make a type of raw synthesizer and drum machine music that could be listened to beside the hypermodern techno of pearson sound or actress. the cover art is a tribute to a mysterious mural that looms over the hamilton ontario area where the album was recorded. each of the five tracks on the ep were edited down from much longer recording jams which were done with hardware sequencers in real time. the recording was done completely off the floor with no overdubs or added material after the fact.

for the first release on the wysing polyphonic label three-piece ectopia have created a suite of seven new works in which intricate cello and screeching and spoken word vocals are carried along on a wave of dark electronica, taking the listener on a journey into sad acid house, scratched dvds, lipstick clogged with rolling tobacco and hangovers with absent lovers.
ectopia are adam christensen, jack brennan and viki steiri. previous works have included sound-tracking jack smith’s experimental film normal love (1963) and carl theodor dreyer’s the passion of joan of arc (1928). they recently played a sell-out show at london’s ica in a wysing polyphonic showcase that also featured xname, siren and n-prolenta who made their uk live debut.
wysing polyphonic has emerged from the wysing polyphonic music festival, now in its 8th year, which has programmed the likes of beatric dillon, elaine mitchener, hannah sawtell, helena hauff, holly herndon, james holden, karen gwyer, klara lewis, nik colk void and russell haswell, amongst many others, play at the cambridgeshire centre.

since the inception of gregory vand and susan subtract’s electro-punk outfit high-functioning flesh in 2012, the band has proven to be one of the most singular acts in years, defying the genre tag of “classic” ebm, as the creativity and fresh perspective they bring to the stage and studio has been instrumental in carving out a modern audience for the genre – elevating hff into a category all their own. following their striking debut on dka records in 2014, high-functioning flesh delivered an exceptional step forward in their sound on their sophomore effort for dais records, the “definite structures” lp in 2015. since then, high-functioning flesh has toured extensively with label mates body of light and previewed their caustic shift to a more refined, hardened signature with their “human remains” single in 2016. we now find high-functioning flesh at their sharpest and most poised position to date within their newest album: “culture cut”

harrison bdp steps up for the inaugural release from artesian sounds kicking things off with one of harrison’s most anticipated tracks to date. “it’s foggy outside” has been rescued from the confines of the world wide web remastered and revamped to finally get its first taste of wax. foggy had everyone grooving from the get go and now will hit harder and deeper every time.
the flip sees harrison showing off his knack for the garage shuffle and straight-up, no fuss, late night bangers. roberto s wraps things up providing his own playful rendition of the a-side track, building on those blissful chords with crystal clear arps and a bounding rhythm. a perfect summer’s day encapsulated...

møzakia broke down the door for no bad days with their first release, and it is with great delight that he returns to kickstart the new sister label - no bad edits. the name has changed, but the ear for colourful and supremely dreamy tunes hasn’t. these impressive tunes are not your standard cut ’n paste extensions.
using motifs from a long-forgotten 80s new age cassette, møzakia shoots for a mellow paradise with three cuts that variously evoke finis africae’s 4th world exotica, contemporary house jams, and even the rainbow road level on mario kart 64. long may the love-in continue!

oh so coy presents its 3rd & 4th vinyl outings respectively courtesy of german resident marc heun. quality production encapsulates all eight tracks that move effortlessly from deep to discofied house. disc 1 takes a slightly experimental edge with some great sampling work and raw beats. disc 2 has a more summery feel with breezy disco house edits and filtered vocal twists.

third stream is the new project developed by alex font and it is dedicated specially for the real diggers. this record hardly has any promotion in order to preserve the music to those who invest buying the music and dig deeply. no promo pools, no soundcloud, no facebook fan page or shit like that. we could call this a true only vinyl record with just 150 copies.

arctor appeared on our radar a year or so ago and stands out with his high-bpm, melodic techno blend. time and time again he has been surprising us as a producer and dj with amazingly crafted music. so when we decided to do a vinyl only sublabel, we just couldn’t think of anyone else to do the debut release. we hope you will love the three tracks he made and the acid-infused remix by gynoid audio’s advanced human.

with spring well and truly in the air and party season in step, mosaic records boss steve o sullivan launches mosaic s 38th release - joining forces with fellow londoner frazer campbell for a new studio collaboration. not content with letting the dust settle from his recent work alongside ricardo villalobos, o sullivan has stayed a little closer to his london home to work with frazer campbell for this latest tag team effort. a dextrous hand in the mix and producer in his own right, campbell has a passion for all things that sit on the deeper end of the house, techno and electronica spectrum. in his own words, thought emoting music is central to his mission having launched open recordings and elliot project records last year: a worthy sparring partner indeed. since the start of the year, the pair had their heads down focusing on finding a happy medium between deeply swung grooves and the airy influences of detroit - shaking out an interesting trio of tracks for their label debut. far from treading the obvious path, the main event a1 hypnotonic revels in a lighter touch as metronomic beat programming cycles endlessly to a held set of notes. off-kilter bass pulses, warped out vocals and effect splashes all intersect to keep the energy input constant as they capture one of those less frenzied moments where the very notion of time seems to hold still. make no mistake, this is a slow burn vibe. head to the flipside b1 soultonic to plunge yourself straight into hip twitching mode when the lights go down. a deep chord, syncopated hats and deftly tweaked synths echo as a full dose of shuffle inflicts its move. simple yet so effective, this track will not let you down. winding things back up a touch, the tougher edge of alleyway funk pushes the feeling on thanks to a thumping kick and a deft nod towards uk garage. met with a soft glisten of a rhodes piano and tweakish melody, the pair round things off in a boyant mood - fans of soul capsule and schatrax will no doubt agree. repeat play of this ep is recommended as its all the more rewarding for it.
