bristol based arkist has always been a versatile producer and as a result has an impressive rage of releases under his belt, with revered imprints such as hotflush and hypercolour. recently he has been experimenting further in the studio and is ready to present his first 12inch in few years, under a brand new alias - astrocat. in this debut, self-titled ep it is instantly apparent that vocoder-infused funk and disco of the highest order can be expected from this new astrocat guise. the ep is full of vintage talk box vocals, warm spacey chords and infectious basslines that bring classic records from the likes of zapp and the rah band into mind. with 5 tracks this ep has a lot to offer. wether it be the raw, funked up james of the opener small talk and title track astrocat or the more chilled, woozy grooves of nightflare . with features from mr woodnote and a dub remix from appleblim this ep s roots sit firmly in the south west. local legend dj die even lent his vocoder to the studio for some of the recordings.

the curatorial direction appleblim has always chosen to take with apple pips is rooted in his dj sets, testing tracks to the nth degree and searching for those cuts which engender the desired emotional response in the club. arkists 2011 banger rendezvous held plenty of that weight in its original form, and it wasnt long before scuba wanted to get his hands on the parts for a more houseminded revision in line with his scb output. kept as a secret weapon of blims ever since it was first crafted, scubas dj kicks mix in 2012 finally brought about a public airing of his own edit. with the dust settled on that particular chapter, it is only fitting that this rock solid interpretation receives a full vinyl release over which the eight minutes of poised keys, unflinching bass and swelling atmospherics can prowl undisturbed.

odd socks 006 comes in the form of a collection of remixes. max graef gets the ball rolling with his sophisticated take on glenn astro & imyrminds >kdim<. a hypnotic patchwork of original themes and maxs refined style. rounding off the a-side, imyrmind weaves a psychedelic web of saines fragile tones. schizophrenic, squiggly, and finally jersey jackin. on the b-side, james creed presents a shuffling housed-up version of josh t & arkists slow jam, >fleabag<. re-appropriating its faux-vintage stabs into a dreamy central motif matched with warm portamento-laced basslines. finally, josh t closes the record with an ultra deep workout in his interpretation of james creeds >undone<. sustained strings and ice cold hi-hats meet muted percussion in this classicly fashioned revision.

odd004 is the first various artists release from odd socks, and marks the beginning of a series titled trips & trinkets. returning to the label a year since he kicked things off for us, josh t teams up with bristols arkist for their track fleabag – with chunky slomo grooves and funk sensibilities dripping all over an infectious beat.ad bourke joins the ranks with his sunday afternoon stroller, water sign. warm bassline grooves and fluttering flute samples sandwich delicate, wavering rhodes. on the flip, leeds-based tms’s debut release individualism is a dreamy little number that twinkles and plods around live hi-hats and a full-bodied bassline. saine rounds things off with his dramatic, heartstring-pulling should-be-a-movie-score epic, ratio.
