known for housing a famous beastie boys sample, the reissue of the 1975 funk and fusion classic funk factory brings peerless polish and american players together for a groovy, eccentric journey. it was an album cut from this lp that captured a particular corner of the music-geek imagination for more than 40 years: “rien ne va plus,” from the self-titled 1975 album, had its reckoning with the canon when the dust brothers sampled major chunks of it for beastie boys’ “car thief.” “rien ne va plus” is a banger, all post-head hunters springy synth-bass. as for the rest of the album, funk factory can stray pretty far into the cheerier excesses of prog-jazz. it emphasizes the alluring strangeness of its more experimental moments, like the hallucinogenic haunted-house tour of “lilliput” or the banshee james brown vocal riffs on “horsing around.” “rien ne va plus” remains the top highlight. this album is proof that a core of musicians schooled in jazz but culturally steeped in the folk and classical traditions of eastern europe could, at least once, put out something that fit well with the crossover sound of the times while being unafraid to dive into freeform weirdness.

the last essential outing of 2017 for the play it say it label is from legendary dj and producer harry romero. globally acclaimed and recognised star harry romero has been a driving force in the scene since the 90s. he’s released on such seminal labels as sex mania, power music and strictly rhythm, but also contemporary imprints like ovum and defected. never far from the dance charts and an inductee into pete tong s hall of fame, harry’s own bambossa records is another fine chapter in his definitive story. here he shows off his current sound across three fresh tracks. opening up the ep is the arresting ‘mother earth,’ a percussive and tribal number with pinging kicks and loose hits all encouraging you to cut shapes. bright synths rise up through the mix to bring some tension and drama and crowds are certain to react with hands in the air. the masterfully mangled ‘lesson on swing’ is a vibrant brew of skewed synths and surging bass, vocal yelps and wonky chords that will freak out any floor. it’s another robust and full fat tune from the studio of harry romero. last of all is ‘scatter’, a high-pressure tune with characteristically big drums and fat bass all overlaid with vocal effects that build the intensity. hooky little synth motifs and metallic percussion all add to the steaminess and ensure this a huge anthem in the making. this is a top trio of tunes that are imbued with all the knowledge and know how of a real house legend

suction records is proud to present the 4th and final volume of rx-101’s “ep” series of vinyl releases, showcasing a selection of standout cuts from dutch producer erik jong’s vast archive of previously-unreleased techno, idm, acid, and electro, recorded to cassette from 1997-1999. roland’s cover-star instruments, the sh-101 and juno-106, play a prominent role in ep 4’s sound - a playful mix of joyous, sometimes haunting synthesizer melodies, and raw, crunchy percussion. from the early-squarepusher melodies of opener themis, to the eerie boards of canada-like nostalgia of transmission, ep 4 delivers 6 tracks of classic late-90s electronix, with rx-101 affirming himself as an unheralded master in the rephlex/warp/skam domain.

formed in 1997, and inaugurated that year with a split 12inch from new-comers and label founders, solvent and lowfish, this year suction records celebrates its 20th anniversary with the re-introduction of their famed snow robots series of compilations. while originally started as a north american answer to uk electronix labels like rephlex, skam and warp records, a sound that is still a staple of the current suction records catalog, suctions sound has also swerved into new territories, reflecting our love of dark 80s electronic music synthpop, ebm, and beyond. snow robots volume 4 features an international array of artists, fromsuction records mainstays like digital poodle, june, celldoed, and ceramic hello (with their much sought-after 1982 vocoder anthem), to label-favourites appearing on suction records for the first time: beau wanzer, morah, and one of skanfrom/sleeparchives lesser known aliases, civil defence programme.

arkansas native, lee moore moved to memphis in 1975 with only one goal in mind: to make it big in the music industry and to release music that would be played in new york, l.a and everywhere in between. as a singer and songwriter lee moore spent the 1980s collaborating in memphis with the best of the best session musicians and vocalists from labels like volt and stax records to record and release futuristic boogie, soul, and funk. in his quest for a unique sound, he constantly reinvented himself, creating projects with new aliases and concepts, scraping together studio time, and hustling. even today, moores music sounds ahead of its time.

so, after a little break we’re back with a new release. this time we’re joined by the multi-talented production powerhouse that is swarm intelligence (aka simon hayes). landing heavy with four bruising techno cuts that each find their own unique way of taking your head off, ear017 is a bumpy journey through darker club flavours. ‘flatlands’ opens things up, reminiscent of the type of marching, granite-heavy brum techno of old – this is minimal in construction but maximum in its impact. move forward to ‘ground up’ where demonic, dissonant keys take the lead above a rattling midrange that sounds like a corrugated roof ready to fly off. opting for cleaner, elastic drum patterns on ‘tingla’, hayes swaps tense for dense, with a loud take on steppy techno, that’ll please fans of some of blawan’s earlier work. ‘skitz’ starts out an a more dub tip with a wailing, paranoia inducing hook and snaking rhythms, eventually joined by more hard-hitting broken kicks, leading us comfortably into oblivion.

idle hands continues its quest to support new talent coming out of bristol with a fresh 12inch from local beatsmith crump. up to this point, he s been quietly slipping out razor sharp reduced house cuts on various artist releases for extended play and banoffee pies, but it s high time he had a 12inch of his to truly showcase his sound. the two tracks on this single tap into a consistent thread on idle, fusing the minimal sensibilities of contemporary european house music with a swung, dub-weighted presence fit for soundsystem consumption in the fair city we call home. much like previous releases from leif, christian jay and matt karmil, this is a demonstration of stripped down music loaded with swagger. -ice & spheres- pivots around an ear-snagging 2-step shuffle that cuts through any mix, but there s scores of subtlety woven in between the drums to reward the attentive listener. snatches of vocal, distant field recordings, low-blowing synth licks and other unidentifiable sonic matter lurk quietly in the mix to cast a spell on the sleep-deprived twitcher and warm-up head-nodder alike. sporting a brighter disposition thanks to the sheen of its chords, -mechanisms- provides a different vibe on the flip. the beat throws down with a rugged nod to west london broken styles while still tapping into that aforementioned continental 4/4 sensibility, injecting a refreshing variation into the densely populated minimal house landscape while maintaining the meditative qualities that keep the genre close to our hearts

hell yeah s next vinyl ep is a first solo release since 2012 from the vendetta suite aka belfasts gary irwin. it features six tracks all handpicked by label boss marco from vast unreleased vaults that have already been played by david holmes and andrew weatherall, and it comes with a great backstory

the third release for la freund recordings comes from amsterdam resident beraber. consisting of four strong and diverse tracks and a jazzy, piano-heavy remix by chicago house legend vincent floyd, sun ritual works just as well in the club as it does at home. after working on hiphop and downtempo electronica under different aliases, this ep sees baris akardere venturing into up-tempo territories, marking the debut of his beraber moniker. all tracks were written and produced during the last two years, combining digital instruments like the korg m1 and yamaha dx7 with analog gear like the roland juno-6 and korg ms-10. kicking things off on the a-side is title track sun ritual, a positive and warm tune with lush chords and arpeggiated synths. after a surprising outro, it gets the remix treatment by deep house pioneer vincent floyd, who adds multiple layers to it and delivers a stunning, dreamy eight-minute take on the original. the flipside opens with ugly, a soulful club workout with a deep bassline, rolling drums with crisp hi-hats and a hypnotic melody. next up is introspect, a serious electro-tinged cut with heavy juno chords building up tension as the track evolves. rounding it up nicely, forest rain treats us to an intimate broken-beat affair laced with rhodes chords and field recordings from bali.

the apparition of spanish female duo las grecas with their gipsy-rock sound in the 70s created quite a boom in the spanish market at the time and paved the way for other similar gipsy-rock duos. morena y clara were one of them. launched by bizarre flamenco producer lauren postigo, they released a string of 45s and three lps (highly sought after now) for the discophon label. they mixed rumba, flamenco, psychedelic rock, funk and disco music featuring an amazing production (heavy drums, fuzz-wah-phaser electric guitars, moog, hammond) over the wild flamenco female vocals of the duo. featuring their psychotronic hits like no llores mas, deje de quererte, buscando alegria and more.

heres an anthology dedicated to the 70s period of dolores vargas, known as the earthquake due to her wild and frenzied dancing style. in these songs, released 1970-1975, youll hear killer sound and production mixing funk, rock and pop with the powerful vocal style of the earthquake. including real gipsy-funk bombs like a la pelota anana hip or la hawaiana along with her bizarre cover version of chirpy chirpy cheep cheep and much more.
