>mr guy< is a lovely slice of lovers rock and somewhat overlooked when released in 1980 but it has become a firm favourite with us here at bristol archive. >pretty girl< finds roots singer joshua moses showing his softer side, it was something of a hit on the original release and makes a natural pairing with sharons tune.
both tracks were originally released as singles on bristol label shoc-wave records some thirty years ago and were given their first digital release with their well deserved inclusion on >the bristol reggae explosion 1978 ¹ 1983<. >mr guy< also made it onto the limited vinyl version of the album, but running time constraints meant there was no room for >pretty girl< something we a very pleased to rectify with this vinyl release.

due rent is a collaborative double album by solo artists lojii & swarvy. written & recorded in the summer of 2016 in l.a. by the two philadelphian transplants, lojii says this tape is a score to being a broke nxgga in amerikkka (emphasis on the kkk) – full of dreams and hustlin to make em happen, but dealing with the everyday pressures of making ends meet. a.k.a trying to pay rent. the 22 tracks, many of which barely break the two-minute mark, make for a vast voyage through remarkable contemporary hip-hop. the grooves and beats that skip and flutter are smooth and mellow, with nods to the old-school but entirely void of nostalgia. this is a sophisticated, thoughtful, and inventive modern hip-hop record that understands anger doesnt have to be loud. daniel dylan wray, bandcamp (best 100 albums of 2017)

science fiction shifted from their early deep territories of house to the current broken beats of electro, keeping the characteristic classic analogue warmth. this ep is made by various artists, and it comes under the signature of an obsessive majestic presence of the 808 beat, that sounds like an accidental tribute to the creator of this drum machine, founder of roland corporation, that has died on april the 1st as a fool that changed the way to make music since early 80es. tracks are mostly sustained, from synched sequences of hinode to the final atmospheric obscure modular landscapes of exterminador, chromed by ngly distortions in track 02. dj nephil on the b side introduces a solid visionary chicagesque mellow atmosphere.

after the first two 12inches from label founder deep88 himself, ascii records turns to a whole host of different characters to remix those tracks with some stunning and varied results. luis cl is up first, taking a decidedly mellow approach to harmony that tips into a heavy lidded early 90s deep house mood perfectly, while rnr take the robert owens-featuring believe in you and make it into a stirring, tense but ultimately emotional acid-laced floor track. rhythm 2 soul do a gentle job on la beija, mhcrew take a larry heard-esque approach on rotation and jimini lets the space in the mix tell its own story.

nat wendell launches the depth of my soul label with a confident slab of deepness that should draw plenty of heat on the peaks and troughs of the house music landscape. -the way- is a crisply produced pumper, revolving around a seductive little lead line and the haunting titular vocal hook - there s a whiff of tech in the make up of the track, but the groove is all house. -theoretics- follows down a similar path, keeping things moody and mechanical without disposing of the funk, and then it s down to -release your soul- to bring a little light into proceedings with some mellow keys and dubby flourishes.

after recent outings from the likes of felix leifur and tlim shug, frits wentink is back on his own bobby donny label. his previous releases have been solo affairs but this time he is in collaboration with tristan hallis aka dj boring. the origins of london based dj & producer lie in australia, where he was raised and cultured amongst some of the most interesting musical phenomena of the 21st century a1 is an inventive tune with bristling drums and break beats run through with warped vocals, razor sharp hi hats and mellow padts deep but dynamic and will get you on your toes. b1 then chops up more trippy vocal samples and curious synth sounds with elastic, pinging kick drums and makes for something woozy yet groovy and full of intrigue. last but not least, b2 channels classic deep house vibes with balmy pads, garage style percussion and more slick drum work that really brings something fresh. this is a trio of cuts that bring the best out of each producer and results in truly original music.

sudd records make the leap to vinyl with the help of detroit champ gari romalis. abstraxx (linear mix) kicks off the record in a heady fog of undulating pads, the smoke positively drifting out of the speaker cones over a simple, deep-as-you-like drum pattern. dark ryda (sunset mix) gets a little more funk in its rhythm, but the same mellow mood prevails, almost reaching dub techno levels in its atmospheric chord swells. heat (bout that life mix) takes things out of the darkness and into a lighter frame of mind, but romalis is still firmly in the deep end of the deep house pool with this final cut on the record.

piff records continues to unravel its catalogue by calling on an artist slightly closer to home. cardiff-based harrison bdp adds to his already prolific discography with an ep that spans from mellow dub techno vibrations, all the way up to wide-open, rave-driven acid riffs.
harrison’s a-side revels in a deep pool of soft bubbling synth chords, moulded to the backdrop of tight rolling drum work and occasionally teasing the wider, heavier energies to be found on the flip.
the b side ripples with ricocheting, delay-laden soundscapes, rock-solid drums lines, and nostalgic lead synth lines that make you glad that you’ve caught on to this talented producer early on in his promising career.

finally a fresh mcde is announced! new one from long time deep house/broken producer, pablo valentino... . its been four years since label co-founder pablo valentino became a daddy, and almost as old is the idea of him releasing a record on our imprint. so what makes more sense than to dedicate this record to hugo-joão, his son? on -my son s smile- we can hear a recording of hugo-joão s laughter over a mellow, summery house track that has been a big favorite of danilo over the years. with a little help from lyon producer patchworks, who played bass on the track, valentino pulls off one of his most sophisticated productions yet.

last year saw the mysterious garage shelter make their debut appearance on skylax, and little is still known about them! all we know is they are back with some freshness on the skylax classic sublabel. first up is bring back love, a track that will sink its claws in with that infectious vocal sample hook. sticking with the old school sample vibe is the lonely heart dub of attempt, it’s a bit more mellow but still has plenty of groove in it. friend of the garage shelter, dj la foudre, appears over on the b side with it’s alright (signal st mix). still on that catchy sample tip, it features one of the grooviest bassline and funky guitar pairings i’ve heard in a long time. next up, perception 66 is a smooth house affair from yet another friend, asa no hikari. rounding out the package is garage shelter’s own you (still), a dreamy pad-driven track that may indeed be the pick of the release. while we don’t know much about garage shelter, we can’t help but look forward to what they come out with next!

>dance to the music< recalls the vitalic spirit of yesteryear, laced with smoking disco loops, rubberband basslines and a cajoling vocal hook that sounds so bright you would swear it was crafted with pure sunshine. the dub reveals a sexy bassline and those signature soularis beats. on the flip the boys dish up a a slice of deep house pie with high noon, dedicated to that green, sticky substance. mellow chords and marijuana endorsing samples make this song the perfect way to start off your mix-tapes and live gigs. the chill-out mix is a beautiful 7 minute smokers delight, complete with spine-tingling strings and downtempo rhythms which will leave you more horizontal than a few perkies and some choice lager.

the solid tumbling tones found on this ep are all thats needed as an introduction to these two accomplished producers latest creation. both strong forces in their own right, the pair come together once again on sweatshop to present their vision of dancefloor harmony, and mystery! sirens is the aptly titled track whose crazy vibe is encapsulated by jacking, swinging percussion, wild pitching synth stabs and a haunting soprano soloist letting loose! this needs to be experienced to be believed, but the proof will be in the dancefloor, hands in the air and minds expanded! moirae works the tension with dense filtered stabs and crisp solid state percussion, driving this deep slab of dark dance into blissful moments of release. mellow yet urgent, its a raw, purist electronic statement! joel alter also offers up a special edit which focuses the groove in a slightly more kinetic direction, with reduced, aquatic synth work and a classic club energy that makes it an ideal addition to the package.

mobilee back to back vol. 3, compiled by miss jools, is inching its way to the release date but before then, active listeners can turn ears to the second exclusive vinyl teaser release with remixes from d julz and christian burkhardt. djulz of ovum, pokerflat and intacto records remixed gummihzs 2007 one-of-kind release and turned it into nothing short of a dance floor phenomenon. of course, nothing less could be expected from a man who has been around the world and back since 1992 playing in the most legendary clubs before the most legendary scensters. d julz certainly has the qualification and experience of what it takes to make a party a paaarty! christian burkhardt of oslo, raum…musik and remote area records took one of anjaschneiders more mellow and somber tunes from her spooky beyond the valley album, which ranked third in the charts of groove magazine, and give it a powerful face lift. the hard baseline and repetitive foot-stomping beat is exactly the kind of techno flair that burkhardt embodies in his music. mobilee back to back vol. 3, to be released march 2, 2009, combines a compilation of tracks and remixes produced by mobilees, remixed by other various artists and then mixed again by miss jools in a two-disc spectacular: cd1 is an unmixed selection of 2008 mobilee tracks, all handpicked by miss jools, while cd2 welcomes a list of her favorite producers to remix their picks of the mobilee pack with an additional miss jools spin. miss jools invited talents from the likes of cassy, tobias., nick curly, dinky, djulz, efdemin, christian burkhardt, vincenzo, sven tasnadi and solomun, extending the musical preference.

recently landing on the nite grooves shores from japan, this most recent double a side is the third great electronic endeavor to be issued. the first, nami is a tripped out loungey mover where synth stabs dominate throughout. a deep faded bassline is added and together with a classic house hi hat makes for a well rounded instrumental. aso is a mellow non invasive, non vocal perfect for the side chill room jazzy piano riffs, violin strings, light clavs & bubbly bass line all make a nice sauce

inc cassy remix (perlon, panoramabar), first up is the more jackin minimal tune of the lot.… the second tune of the a-side takes on a more trancey and bleepy approach as string-like pads are brought in to mellow out the feeling of the track and support the crunchy and vibrant bass line. the major elements of b1 are comprised of an acidlike bass line and a staccato house piano. for the fourth and final track of the ep, cassy is brought in on remix duty and does a makeover of bleepy creep (a1) that introduces new elements and new energies. the remix is based on minimal references and stays low and repetitive

Ülar aasmäe aka spin science is a newcomer from estonia following the footsteps of his heroes rulers of the deep and dave storm. >fill your soul< is his first ever ep to be released. this debut ep on cabrio records is a good example of the deep and groovy sounds spin science is after. fill your soul is a nice smooth deep house track with mellow pads and techy chords. smooth vocals by elsa hill. in the remix the vocals remain, but atmospheric chords and a bass line that has more drive in it are added. tonic is a more soulful track with a pumping bass line and vocals. acid lines and saw chords make it a nice club track for sure
