dead man s chest aka alex eveson makes his debut appearance on myor massiv sublabel diamond life alongside head honcho coco bryce. dancehalls seem to be the common denominator on this 12”. and where mr eveson prefers to drop a tab of acid, coco opts for a helping of mandy to work his way through the night. both sides find the respective producers operating at the 160 bpm mark, wading through a hazy mist of sounds reminiscent of clandestine warehouse raves. but whereas dmc utilizes a fairly straightforward, 93 style hardcore drum loop in combination with acidic undertones and atmospherics which clearly reveal his love for the “golden era” of mo wax trip hop, señor bryce s jam is a far more hectic sounding affair, layering a chopped and re-edited apache on top of an already-frantic, percussion- laden break beat, adding even more to the rushy feeling induced by the nervous pads and rave stabs. quality, yet slightly off-kilter hardcore junglist exercises.

new zealand s most prolific j-tek enthusiast dan silk aka worldwide epidemic returns to the myor camp, this time for a solo release on the diamond life sublabel. on “aroha” he finds himself exploring territory slightly removed from his usual 4x4 jungle techno habitat. extended pads, techy synth stabs, sugar coated diva vocals and spot of amen choppage courtesy of label boss coco bryce make for a top notch 7 minute atmospheric d&b junglist excursion. “enterprise” offers everything one might have come to expect from mr. silk: his signature offbeat break programming layered with a 4x4 kick drum, instantly recognizable synth melodies and a healthy dose of pads. hardcore in its most gentle form.

the torben unit band from berlin returns more experimental than ever whilst still being rooted between jazz and rock. after the self-titled first lp on money $ex records, the second album -sawaasch garahsch- will be out in winter 2017. no label – self-released. the new album consists of many episodes telling a story that couldn t be purer nor rawer. jazz-rock is the genus when modal madness meets electronic soul and psychedelic spheres. the spectrum of instruments being used is huge: from bouzouki to pearl s syncussion, there is no limit of instrumentation whilst the core of e-piano, guitar, bass and drums mostly remains. torben unit s concerts as well as the records are a guaranteed jazz-rock party with never ending feeling.

next up on francis harriss newly-founded record label kingdoms comes something very special from brooklyn-based film composer, songwriter, producer and performer leah lazonick. movimenti della luna doro (movements of the moon of gold translated from italian) is a four-track ep from one of the most exciting musicians and performers around - a beautiful quartet of contemporary classical music with a twist. lazonick is something of a polymath, having composed and conducted orchestral and electronic scores for short films and commercials as well as being a classically-trained pianist. lazonick is also a connoisseur of analog synths and vintage drum machines, and will release a second ep focussing on these passions during the course of 2018. here we are treated to three luscious works for piano and string quartet, written for a one-off performance at studio off interarts, an art gallery in montreal. the piece was performed in a forest-like immersive environment, and was originally called in a forest (a piece in three movements). lazonick performed the piano parts along with a string quartet she had assembled for the performance/recording. lazonick explains: as opposed to most of the other songs/compositions i have written, i have no concrete sentimental story behind writing this piece. the motivation, inspiration and overall idea behind composing it was of a more technical nature, attempting to relay the music in my head at its purest form, without any compromises, by primarily making use of melodic and harmonic dissonances whilst still keeping the content captivating, musical and continuous.

okains key ear for a groove finds a home on infuse in the form of his magic box ep. place des fetes is a keen example, subtle layered sounds sneaking in between the b-line driven ride means there s always something new to find. magic box moves into a more blissful arena with it s swelling pad perfect for those early morning sunrise sets whilst rich nxt remixes place de fetes, stripping the elements down in his own inimitable way. vinyl only!

tardis records are delighted to welcome uk tech-house hero flow to the tardis records stable for their eighth release. the three tracks making up the trine ep were recorded together with simon moorecroft (a.k.a. simon vinyl junkie) around the time of his first vinyl releases back in 1996-1997. all three tracks sound completely contemporary whilst having more than enough old school flavour to give flashbacks to any 90s ravers. lead track boy girl action has skipping, garage-influenced beats with rolling bass and swirling atmospherics, whilst a breakbeat, vocals and a stabby intro give trine on the flip a more ravey feel. closing out the ep, i see you is the dubbiest cut here, with another heavy bassline, cut-up vocals,and subtly swung percussion. eli and oscar have loved testing these tracks out on the road and can vouch for their impact on a peak-time dancefloor!

vozduh (air) marks the first in a series of eps by nocow for figure, showcasing his emerging signature-style of electronica-tinged techno. drawing inspiration from the sheer endless winters of st. petersburg, his series builds on classic idm tropes, imbuing them with a noticably russian and deeply personal sensitivity. as each part of the trilogy is represented by an element, the tracks on vozduh are vaporous by nature: from the crackling ambiance of opener bouis to the weightless vocals on stoic forgiven, as well as a surprisingly introspec-tive take on ghetto-house or the wafting melodies closing out the records b-side - all forms seem to be in con-stant shift, casting a dense yet permeable body of sound. with two more releases on the way, which will be exploring the themes of voda (water) and zemlya (earth) within this artists singular spectrum, the outlook (which also includes a full- volume edition) on this approaching season is anything but gloomy.

voda (water) the second part of his trilogy sees aleksei nikitin delving deep into baltic seas. coming up again with chilled flows of acid on vdaleke, the bubbly yet driving thump of subaqueous place-holder, then he goes diving even further on the flip, cruising through underwater caves filled with ten-tacles of twisted, seductive electro, gnarly acid-techno, before finally emerging in iskatel, ears still ringing with harmonies of shredded beauty.

zemlya (earth), the final installment of nocows three-part ep-series for figure unearths the artist‘s maybe most drastic work to date. while opener libbi still sprouts gently into crystalline arteries of ambiance, the incessant arps of synchronicity loom ominously. equally challenging, yet offering conciliation in form of string-led soothing is rave button, after which the record finds closure in the seemingly open-ended sound spiral of troubles will be miles away.

mit hitsingles wie -get a life-, -back home- und -sky and sand- (mit seinem bruder paul) hat fritz kalkbrenner in den letzten jahren unser modernes verständnis von elektronischer musik mitgeprägt. nach vier erfolgreichen alben, von denen die letzten beiden die top 10 der deutschen albumcharts erreichten, wendet er seinen musikalischen blick in eine andere richtung. es geht hier um elektronische musik, wie sie fritz kalkbrenner in seiner jugendlichen sozialisierung in den bis heute legendären techno- und houseclubs der hauptstadt in den neunziger jahren kennengelernt hat. die zäsur, des weglassens der so vertraut gewordenen bariton stimme öffnet die tür in die weite welt elektronischer musik, die sowohl für das homelistening, als auch für den clubeinsatz taugt. es gibt auf diesen 12 tracks keine konventionen und manchmal auch kein halten mehr, fritz kalkbrenner lässt sich gehen in der faszination für dub techno, für klare dominante housestrukturen oder auch in feinen hymnischen melodien die aus so manchem titel des neuen albums herausscheinen.

4 years can feel like a really long time – -long time no see- was achim maerz frst wake up! ep back in 2013, -it s been a while- is his frst track on metal and machines and it s good to see that some things don t change. it s a true achim maerz track – focused on longing melodies, warmly distorted harmonies based on deep house foundations. -listening to machines- features a kickdrum like a steam hammer in factory hall. for the right mind, even a factory can be an inspiring place. benjamin brunn s -iron copper gold- follows his manner of creating timeless and eternal soundscapes. it is less playful and takes the tension to higher grounds. just like metal, it s cold being touched and it doesn t take long until it reaches body temperature. the fourth track express mode- was released on benjamin brunns drop lp in 2015. achim maerz remix sounds like a screwed-down uptempo house track – slow and heavy, but benjamin brunn s quirkiness is undeniably there.

das selbstbetitelte album der avant-pop-musikerin sophia kennedy vom april vergangenen jahres auf dj kozes pampa label begeisterte fans und kritiker gleichermaßen. sophia kennedy gilt völlig zu recht als ausnahmekünstlerin in der zeitgenössischen musik aus deutschland. die symbiotische verbindung setzt sich nun mit der veröffentlichung einer neuen 10inch fort, inklusive zwei unveröffentlichten songs, auf der sich sophia weiterhin der handwerkskunst eines songwritings diesseits des mainstreams widmet. im zentrum von -being special- steht ein trio aus perkussivem piano-riff, streichern und handclaps, dass das herz mit der anmut eines großen cinematografischen gefühls wärmt. in kennedys version von -afraid- - einst von der all-time-underground-legende nico geschrieben - scheint eine spröde do-it-yourself-angelegenheit, doch der song entwickelt sich ausgeklügelt in kleinen schritten: sophias unverwechselbare stimme gewinnt an fülle und wird zeile für zeile dynamischer, wie sie durch wiegenlied-artige strophen schweift. -apple in the basket- schließlich ist das verschrobene schlussbild, verkörperung eines wirbelnden zirkuskarussells, das sich im verzerrenden glas eines spiegelkabinetts reflektiert und wo der ort, der eigentlich für den refrain reserviert war, der sich steigernden wiederkehr nun grotesk verzerrter orgeltöne überlassen wurde.

family, fish, shapes. these are only three of the many topics that stefan streck aka the micronaut recently devoted himself to within his releases on labels such as acker records or analogsoul. always with a clear line, but never intellectualising, is how the multi-instrumentalist and producer pursues his scientific curiosity in terms of sounds. his tracks are elaborate and yet danceable. sometimes they are composed minimally, sometimes they are utterly playful. within just a few bars, subtle sequences transform to energetic roller coaster rides since the micronaut loves having a game with contrasts. his newest ep on freude am tanzen proves this anew.

ant orange’s third 12&#8243, for karaoke kalk forms something resembling a trilogy for the label. “right there” is built on a familiar rhodes-n-bass aesthetic, combining the lo-fi jazz of 2017’s “arkupe” with the soulful vocal motifs of 2015’s “s/t”, while introducing more electronic ingredients and taking an increasingly exploratory approach to rhythm and composition. the opening title track clocks in at over 8 minutes, growing slowly from soft tickled keys to a full-bodied groove circled by airy synths and fragmented rnb vocals. “drunk in the trunk” then shifts down a gear, looping another vocal cut over a lazy, stripped-back wahwah vibe. side a closes with experimental jazz skit “let that sink in”, its jerky tempo and flashes of light reminiscent of a late-night subway ride. the b-side takes a more contemplative tone, with the meditative arpeggios and sparse drums of “comfort zone” leading into the dusky west coast stroll of “muscle beach”, before “rudis goes offline” picks up the tempo for a last shimmering dance. the closing track “a frozen lake” sounds just like it sounds – chilled by name and by nature.

ziemlich genau ein jahr ist nun seit der veröffentlichung seines letzten albums nacht vergangen. seitdem hat martin kohlstedts mut, den dialog zu suchen, anscheinend überzeugt, denn das resultat sind acht sehr unterschiedliche stücke von künstlern aus deutschland, island, großbritannien und den usa. manche wirken wie ein feinfühliger kommentar zum original, andere sind komplett verschiedene perspektiven auf das ausgangsmaterial. und einige sind zum anlass für gemeinsame projekte geworden, in denen man sich auf augenhöhe etwas vollkommen neuem widmet -allesamt der idee folgend, dass kohlstedts musik nicht fest geschrieben ist, sondern fortwährend in verhandlung.
