small great things is a new label from luca olivotto of endless music and its first release sees the berlin-based artist deliver an ep of modern takes on classic deep house sounds. the small great things ep kicks off with an eponymous cut with steadily unfurling pads leading to a breakdown of light, uplifting melodies while rooted to the floor with a jacking rhythm track and bottom end. sometime ibadan and b-pitch producer dos serves up a remix of -small great things- under his given name, francesco mami, where the italian producer turns in a warm but propellant version with loose, rattling rhythms and saturated stabs creating a nifty, rounded piece. on the b-side olivotto opens with -swipe out-, a gloriously detailed track that balances slick synths and gritty bass perfectly, allowing a beautiful vocal to shine through. we are treated to a stirring song on closing track -dont blame me-, where soaring detroit influenced synth pads and staccato melodies combine to create the perfect foil to the vocals. named to celebrate the little things in life, small great things is a label to firmly keep an eye on.

since so many european labels have been reissuing lost and obscure 1980s japanese ambient albums of late, it was probably inevitable that at least one label would put together a compilation paying tribute to the sound. it turns out that jazzy couscous has won the race with kumo no moko, a superb double album that does a terrific job in putting japan s 80s ambient scene in context. as you d expect, the majority of the tracks feature either dreamy electronic sounds or a mixture of acoustic and electronic instrumentation, with nods to jazz coming thick and fast. there are naturally a couple of fairly well-known names on show, but for the most part the compilers have done a terrific job in highlight lesser-known tracks from unsung heroes.

true to traditional form, where the gods are in peace pays respect to the forefathers of afrobeat with compositions spanning nine to 15 minutes in length. with a blessing from the fela kuti legacy early in the band’s career, antibalas has long been revered for re-popularizing the classic afrobeat sound while adding their distinct new york city grit to the mix. influences of punk rock, free jazz, and hip-hop seep into their expansive works to define a truly 21st century translation of the afrobeat genre and beyond.
