arte moderno was a project running in parallel lines to the overriding trends in early 80s spanish music. short-lived as it was (active between 1981 and 1982) its musical output has continued to amaze the connoisseur ever since. their only 7inch single ninette en new york (ja ja records,1982) is today an item highly rated by collectors and djs worldwide.

melbournes short black label has been relatively sporadic with its releases up until now, having started back in 2013 with matt kennedys together at 2am ep and dropping the third release on the label back in 2016, rustal s privilege. hopefully this excellent new transmission from newcomer tristan kino will be the start of more productivity from the crew. the ep starts off in fine style with the nervy, reduced acid twitch of yggdrassil, while at the other end of the record niddhog presents a tougher, darker throwdown crafted for seedy techno dancefloors. johannes volk has been snapped up for remix duties, and does a sterling service with the metallic clang of his version of niddhog.

releasing timeless music has always been one of the main aims of hivern. sometimes, this purpose asserts itself in curious manners. take margot s moderno , a track made in 2003, several years before the label was born. actually, when pepe and giaga produced the piece for a punk oriented art installation, margot didn t even exist as a project. 14 years later, moderno sounds as fresh and contemporary as it can be. it s one of those cuts that chases a very specific idea with a very unconstrained scheme, that knows exactly where it wants to go, but is not sure about how to get there.

a hypnotic and seductive slow motion groove led along by one of italo discos most swooningly understated yet affecting vocal performances. if ever there has been a record crying out for a proper reissue it is this one. limited official reissue - first copies on translucent blue vinyl.

gerardo frisina goes back to the roots of the sound which has made him famous worldwide: the latin sound of classics like >descarga< or >the latin kick< (both previously released on schema). >moderno primitivo< is an ep about the encounter of the ancient afro-cuban tradition (the core of frisinas artistic dna) with a refined electronic taste. this component enriches drums and percussions and gives more edge to the whole production with details like pads and effects. in >moderno primitivo< the latin ensemble headed by frisina takes us into a jam session where percussions, piano and trombone play happily. the latin house mix is a club version where the rhythmic element and the groove take control of the mix. the melody is broken and a hammond plays over a ostinato bass. the flavour is definitely tribal. >cogele el ritmo< is a trip into frisinas latin world. slower than >moderno primitivo<, still has a solid hook to the dance-floor and is a triumph of joy and colour.

betrachtet man die bewegte biografie des can-bassisten holger czukay, könnte man zu dem schluss kommen, der experimentierfreudige musiker sei ein exzentrischer und unbändiger freigeist. doch czukay betonte in interviews immer wieder, dass er in seinem schaffen stets auf einen musikalischen partner angewiesen sei, egal ob in form eines konkreten gegenübers oder durch radiowellen und später das internet. doch die meisten seiner partner waren aus fleisch und blut. sein dem kino verwandtes gesamtwerk schmückt sich mit einer besetzung, die der eines scorcese-films gleichkommt: brian eno, phew, rolf dammers, david sylvian, annie lennox, jah wobble, die kollegen von can die aufzählung ließe sich noch weit fortsetzen. viele dieser meisterwerke sind heute vergriffen, und so hat es sich das label grönland, das anfang des jahres zu holgers 80. geburtstag bereits die vielbeachtete retrospektive cinema veröffentlichte, zur aufgabe gemacht, holgers musik in remasterten neuauflagen wieder zugänglich zu machen.
