niro perrone better known as simply niro, or easy to remember, alongside sibling and production partner elia perrone, has come a long way over the past few years stacking up releases on the likes of m50’s revered kimochi sound, sound of vast, memento and the dub, as well as releasing his debut lp on his unclear imprint. here though we see niro introduce a new chapter with his brand new label pads.
‘hands of shadow’ opens the release and sets the tone of the label from the very beginning with an understated melodic feel fused with raw percussion and a subtly evolving yet intricate structure. ‘inner space’ follows and wanders into dub territories with spiralling echoes, low-slung drums and ethereal atmospherics. title cut ‘pieces of you’ opens the flip side and lays focus on an infectious unfaltering groove via vacillating pad swells, sporadic jazz licks and a weighty 4/4 drive before closing cut ‘the spectrometer dance’ rounds it all off with some ambient vibes.

“footwork”—the very word indicates a movement of the feet that is “work” (as in an effort to achieve). its joyous social party nature sits within a lineage of african american history that includes the infamous soul train dance tunnel and hip hop dance circles. however, as footwork continues to become more popular, we should not forget that at its essence it is a highly evolved battle form. this is the central theme one feels listening to the stunning “fingers, bank pads & shoe prints,” the second album from rp boo, the man credited with inventing the footwork genre with a 1997 track “baby come on” (recently re-released on the planet mu ep “classics vol. 1”).

soul deep recordings and blade are pleased to present the blackbird ep. the ep features 2 richly crafted rollers that will rock the dance floor. the title track, “blackbird”, has received support from ltj bukem and many other top deejays around the world. the song starts off with a heavy amen break and light background atmospherics. at each turn, the break seems to get heavier as layers are added to the mix. when the bassline drops, the groove is undeniable, and will have your head nodding in approval. the song chugs along and builds to a crescendo with it’s epic pads and tasteful atmospherics. “bella l’amour”, is the second offering, and it shows a different side to blade’s diverse productions. the track begins with a light break, airy efx, and chiming keys, that set the backdrop for this tight production. at the drop, the drums fill in nicely and the warm 808 bassline punch through the mix. overall, blade delivers big on this release, and will surely satisfy his fans with this slice of d&b heaven.

raw but sophistaced deep techno, clearly schooled in the classics, lands courtesy of dublin’s 393 records. label owner philip galvin jnr opens proceedings with two effortlessly grooving cuts. “sub osc” is powered by purring 101 bass & chiming synth tones & “lapping” lets it’s ear wiggling sequence modulate underneath lush pads. on the flip, the parallel cranks up the energy levels with the acidic thud of “voyager” before closing the ep with the dreamy & rolling breakbeat cut, “ascender”.

the young nordic label is back at it with a sturdy 12” vinyl release, produced by the helsinki underground electronic music champion poly sone. the three tracker kicks off with an intro track titled “come find me” which combines stripped down rhythm patterns with a subtle choir pad. on top of the foundation, an entrancing spoken word verse works as the main ingredient throughout the track. as the needle pushes onwards to the title track “echolocate”, the listener is confronted with a robust wall of lowend, soon accompanied by rolling percussions and clever use of reverb and delay. the simple composition highlights its sterling production and makes for a highly useful dancefloor tool. the last track “helix” bundles up the record nicely as the most melodic one of the bunch. the agile synth stabs and dystopic pads operate on a surprisingly groovy soil of bass and drums which add up to a dreamy whole.

bxl003 is the third release of the artist-run brussels based label bxl. this third release by simon halsberghe features a collaboration with sagat (real name wiet lengeler), who previously released on the brussels’ label vlek and had his music included in the fabric mixes of both ben klock and joris voorn. the track is called the set-up and is a relentless sawtooth rave tune that finds it’s balance between the heydays of belgian techno and more contemporary ‘hi-fi’ attitudes towards functional yet idiosyncratic dance tracks. on the b-side space tom sounds is a deeper and more hypnotic trip with lush broad pads that provide a space for the mind as well as sonic pressure on the body. the last track, snared, takes things into breakbeat territory. with razor sharp snares and a pulsating baseline this track lives somewhere in the venn diagram overlap between rave, front 242 and an air raid siren going off.

labelfounder insect o. is back with a 3 track vinyl release of his handcrafted dub techno sound. but there is always more to discover. sandstones starts with field recordings he took at the sandstone mountains of saxony switzerland national park while hiking during the pandemic. back in the studio he layered it on top of spicy chords, beautiful pads and a shuffling groove. but it is this melancholic organ that gives big emotions to the track. the second track is named after a famous little bass synthesizer. volca dub was recorded 10 years ago. it was sitting on the hard disc, waiting for the perfect moment to get finished and released. the chords of the korg volca bass are heavily modulated and tranched into swirling tape delays with a rumbling sub bass underneath. just like dub should sound. the final track everlasting he recorded live in one take on his modular synthesizer. it starts with the rolling bassline by a buchla inspired dual oscillator. a dreamy melody and melancholic chords are fading in. filter pings are providing clicky drums while white noise from the moog dfam is playing a polyrhythmic snare. pitch shifting echoes and a dreamy reverb are gluing the sounds together. it makes you remember the past and think about the future. just like memories do. and some memories last forever.

vinyl only , after a short break unison wax returns with a brand new four-track collection of music from the bossman himself, diego krause. the berliner took a year off in 2016, concentrating on other projects and letting the label have a rest, but now he’s back with a refined sound. unison wax embodies a more sophisticated aesthetic, with warm analogue hues and subtle textures to push things forward a little. after all, we couldn’t come back from a break without progressing, huh?! first out of the blocks is ‘nihilate’, which helps introduce this updated unison wax sound, crisp beats lock us into a groove in conjunction with a dainty selection of analogue effects and a funky little b-line. diego carefully adds new elements as the track progresses, keeping you interested right until the end. next is the title track, ‘rituals’, which kicks off with an insistent bassline and spellbinding percussion that keeps you gripped from the off. he throws in some claps to add energy and muted pads, which slowly rise to prominence, giving the track an emotive atmosphere which wraps itself around you. one for the eternal dreamers… flip the record over for side b and ‘dysfunction’, which turns things grimy. marauding beats and bass conspire to create a morose atmosphere. diego’s penchant for super sharp beats is present here again, and the energy builds slowly but surely. a new layer creeps in every few bars and sucks you right into the track’s lair. expertly done, and impossible to resist, this is darkside pressure at its best. ‘eudaimonia’ rounds things off, with more deep grooves. initially propelled by minimal percussion, the track really gets going when more beats are added. it maintains a laid back feeling and, while the drums are solid, the atmosphere is mostly quite soft with swirling pads keeping things light in the top end. when they fall away towards the end of the track we have a rather gnarly close to the composition, as the beats and bass take over. and there it is, the welcome return of unison wax – smooth and refined for 2017…

echocords colour sub-label continues this november with sephs teleport ep, featuring three originals from the argentinian producer. buenos aires born producer sebastian gelante aka seph has been kicking up a storm in the techno world since the turn of the millennium releasing material on labels such as dumb unit, harry klein, items & things, his own aula magna imprint and now he joins the echocord roster on sub-label echocord colour following recent releases from luke hess and stephen brown. across the teleport ep seph delivers his signature smooth, dubbed out and intricate style and&#8232,,,,,,the title-track takes the lead with billowing pads, bumpy off kilter rhythms and choppy stab sequences galore before delta strips back the vibe to raw drums and murky synth textures while ethereal pads ebb and flow through the composition. motion rounds out the package on the flip side, taking a straighter approach rhythmically this time round to allow the snaking dub stabs, rumbling low-end tones and evolving hats to take the lead throughout.

echocord returns late june with a new release, joel alter under his jor-el alias, entitled ‘tilted reality’ and comprising three originals from the swedish artist. currently based in copenhagen, sweden born producer and dj joel alter is a name synonymous with the contemporary techno scene on both his home turf and across the globe, his back catalogue to date features a long player for the uncanny valley imprint, solo ep’s for d’julz’ bass culture, sweatshop and collaborative works for kontra musik alongside henrik johnsson amongst much more. this time round though we see alter return under his jor-el guise under which he first started releasing material on dj hell’s internation deejay gigolo imprint. up first is title-track ‘tilted reality’ laid out over seven minutes with a slowly unfolding dynamic feel, encompassing spiraling atmospherics, distorted rhythms and blooming stab- sequences. ‘elevation’ follows and takes a more direct groove-driven approach via straight four-four percussion and hooky bass chops, whilst tension building pads and fluttering dub echoes gradually build around the foundation. ‘solitude’ closes out the package deliving into deeper realms with soft ethereal dub chords, acid tinged leads and emotive strings.

danny goliger was one of our first artists that we launched our left-of-center white label project with, and his eclectic and genre-bending tracks make their way back to the label again. this time he brings along choopsie, the talented producer out of la with an equal amount of diversity, both broken-beat in nature, “cycling” contrasts with rumble bass and soft pads, while “af rex” takes a melancholy tone with chopped vocal bits and rolling low subs

repress - hot on the heels of aus recent releases from breach, huxley and bwana they ready their next offering from irish duo and long term label affiliates bicep. aptly timed for the festival months, their just ep follows up a series of self-released titles which include collaborations with ebony and midland and is an impassioned bundle of broken beats, shimmering synth lines and rapturous piano chords. the title track kicks things off and suffuses a broken kick and snare combo with a poignant sequence and heart-rending synth strings. a vocal refrain drops in and out throughout a lucent breakdown before () lays a soft, filtered croon over a swelling piano motif. tension is astutely balanced, never quite boiling over and keeping the listener pinned before () drives a tough, gravelly kick under gentle flecks of acid and rich sweeping pads.

taevalaotus & joel tammik - both artists featured on this release have been making music since the early 2000s. they have for long entered the endless realm of analog synthesizers and embraced hardware focused creation. the source material for this collaboration was recorded on a single weekend and meticulously arranged into this four-track ep during a year that followed. whether complex chord textures, deep analog bass or soaring pads - it is all fused into the tracks with minimalism at its core, allowing you to take some time off and drift deep into the world of the idm and electronica. lastly, a dub interpretation of the title-track >sfäärid< by aural imbalance shifts down a gear and allows your mind to move even deeper into almost a hypnotic state, perfectly rounding out the material captured on this ep.

davide disanto is an amazing italian producer born in bari, after multiple releases on excellent labels such as let s play house, politics of dancing or even theory of swing, he delivers us a fabulous 12 inch which borrows as much from the heyday of the purest new-york city 90s deep house as well as the purest techno made in detroit. the 1st track from this ep seems to have come straight from an imaginary collaboration between boo williams & ron trent, the violence of the rhythm is counterbalanced by some airy & ultra deep pads, the aptly named atmosfear. a banger as we rarely hear today. c mon, let me see on a2 sounds like a modern take on the awesome jerzzey boy. on the b side, da love feeling (main mix) & le (4am underground dub) revisits the 90s once again for our greatest pleasure, particularly the latter seems to have come straight out of a lost mix of the great danny tenaglia. and to end this ep in style, davide allows himself the luxury of summoning the spirit of mbg and all the best italian deep house from the early 90s on the superb lungomare (ambient reprise). essential item !

techno culturae records launches its first lp and debuts in the world of vinyl with a really hard release. composed of an original mix, by indeck and three remixes, d. carbone, electrorites and warind. dark sounds distinguish this output which represents a real introspection of the dark soul of the artists, where the distorted sounds of the drums and the properly saturated lead / pads, emphasize the frequencies, standing out in a basically hard techno mix that is really interesting. they follow the metrics in a very precise way with different pauses and restarts typical of a sound that is not monotonous, but hard and motivating.

asc decided it was time to return to the music that he grew up on. with a gentle nudge from presha, the breakbeats were back in the mix and a slew of mid 90’s-inspired drum & bass ensued. the majority of the heavier break-oriented and edit-ladened were set aside for projects with samurai, however, there were a grip of tracks that were more at home with the older atmospheric / intelligent styles of drum & bass from the mid 90’s. ideasthesia is the culmination of that work. four tracks of atmospheric drum & bass in its most unadulterated form. no drum machines at work here, just sped up breakbeats, heavy 808 bass, blissful pads, and ethereal textures. ideasthesia is a true love letter to a golden age of music which sadly seems long forgotten.
