hip-hop lost one of its most talented wordsmiths when fred the godson passed away due to complications with covid-19 last year. however, his family has continued his legacy by launching the nonprofit fred the godson foundation, as well as releasing some of his most sought-after music on vinyl and cd. ascension is the first posthumous release with all new material from the south bronx emcee. the tracks were handpicked by fred s brother russ and they are a prime example of the creative high he was on just before his passing. the collection of songs includes production from the heatmakerz and guest spots from g mims, guap sinatra, m city, reef hustle, bandz dinero and more. this album is a celebration of fred s life and so, fittingly, the lp dropped digitally on his birthday, february 22. on the same day, new york city officials unveiled a new street name in the south bronx honoring the respected lyricist: fredrick -fred the godson- thomas way. a lot of artists make street music, but only a handful have ever received a tribute with street signs.

spirituals operates under contradictory, sometimes combating, stylistic principles. somehow, however, small glints of emotive euphoria always seem to emerge from the muck and mire at just the right time. love changes, an eerily relatable distant memory, floats in an unsettling, yet celebratory dreamscape. gersts is nested comfortably in a cautiously optimistic daze. in canadian national, the priming of a train engine turns into a snare-driven house banger ¹ a prime example of spiritualsã obsession with combining natural and synthetic moving parts. as it rotates and revolves through ranges of blissfully dissimilar materials, doumen 07 elegantly drapes us in an emotional, shimmering house-coat with pulsating thumps to wear as our slippers.

antoine harispurus was raised by a robot called v.i.c.t.o.r. the robot took care of little antoine and early on he gave him music lessons and also the right equipment, for example a roland 808. robotic, mechanical precision became significant for antoines music and soon he left the safety of his mothers toy store for the huge european club scene under his new pseudonym golden bug.
this year he releases two songs as a 7 inch vinyl and in digital format on hoga nord rekords. the a-side, “viaje a tenderloin” sounds like the inside of an east german military liaison in 1975 where the tabulating machines haven’t had service since the raise of the berlin wall. on the b-side “hitodoma”, guest vocalist jessica ho plays with her voice in a bubbly way above golden bugs characteristic metallic, world music influenced sounds and beats. the music would fit perfectly in a vast alien mountain landscape.
in conclusion, the music on this 7 inch is the sound of human and robot in close symbiosis - golden bug is music by robot and human for robot and human.

this is a rare gem of a record from fantastic soul band the soul kids stemming from the democratic republic of congo, including covers of james brown & the mighty flames hit singles -lickin stick- (1968), -papa s got a brand new bag- (1965), wilson pickett’s -hey jude- and a french vocal version of otis redding’s soul hit -respect -. this amazing young band, which released only four 7inch singles and one album, is a great example of the influence of soul music and french pop bridging to the new afro soul scene that the musicians of kinshasa were involved in during the time of post-independence. ngoma was one of the first record labels intent on providing local artists recordings from both sides of the congo river to the people of the drc and west africa. created in 1948 by a greek man by the name of nicolas jeronimidis, the ngoma label was active through 1968, pressed in france until 1971, with a tremendous catalogue, including this historical and essential soul masterpiece!

the first in a series of all-time classic hip-hop anthems from the nervous vaults, pressed onto high quality dinked 45s. remastered from the original source material and featuring the unedited dirty version on the a-side, and the full instrumental on the b-side, these 45s are for the heads who know what time it really is! black moon s who got the props needs no introduction, its place in hip-hop history is fully solidified. the combination of vintage beatminerz sp1200 beats paired with the legendary mcs buckshot and the 5 ft. accelerator s streetwise nyc raps is a heady mixture indeed. often speaking of street life in new york in the 1990 s, black moon gained cult status via their 1993 debut lp enta da stage , one of the most celebrated hip-hop debut albums of all time. the beatminerz production changed the game, their deep knowledge and understanding of samples, records and digging in the crates gave their sound a real style and edge. who got da props is the perfect example of this, one of those timeless rap records that appeals to the hardcore and can ignite the party. truly essential. every home should have one (or 2!). fully legit, licensed and reissued by above board distribution in conjunction with nervous records, nyc. 2018.

jaffa surfa also known as zoltan pal is hailing from hungary and has released a few records already on other labels like tape hiss for example that already caught our attention a bit earlier. therefor we were quite happy to receive a demo from him and we signed almost all the tracks that he sent us. three tracks aiming straight at the dance floor and we hope that you enjoy and play them as much as we do.

the third and final instalment in frits two bar house music & chord stuff sees him continue to showcase his distinct style of lo-fi, wonky house - both quirky & unconventional, yet instantly endearing in the same breath. served up first in frits melting pot, theme 09 kicks things off with a shuffling, ukg esque rhythm and rnb flexed vocal snippets, alongside floaty arps and that chord stuff that swells and stabs in the mix. throw in a weighty bass and frits trademark analogue wonkiness and you ve got a prime example of a wentink wobbler. next up, theme 10 hits you with an organ melody reminiscent of a warped crystal waters, before twisting and turning into an edgy off-kilter house track. a glitchy synth line, bouncing bass and dreamy pads will hook you till the end. flip it and theme 11 offers up a chuggier affair where glistening arps are interspersed with squelchy and sustained synths. elements and effects are combined throughout, mesmerising you with a glimpse into the wonky world of the frits. closing it out wentink leaves you with a quirky club stomper, coupling a gritty bassline, saturated loops and off kilter, lo-fi stabs all tied together with a driving kick. across this 3-part series frits has left the fancy titles at the door, letting the music do the talking and demonstrating his penchant for making interesting, engaging and distinctive house music, not your average two bar house music and chord stuff.

umeko ando (1932-2004) was a folk singer from japan. she was a representative of the ainu culture on the hokkaido island in the north of japan. “ihunke” is her first album which was recorded with the ainu musician and dub producer oki kano in 2000. it was released on cd in japan only and is finally available on vinyl (2lp + linernotes, dl included). “ihunke” is following last year’s single “iuta upopo” pingipung 58, incl. m.rux remix which had been received with overwhelming enthusiasm and was quickly sold out. the 16 ainu songs on “ihunke” are delicate, natural gems. they are built on oki kano’s tonkori patterns (a 5-string harp), over which umeko ando develops her repetitive, mantric vocals, often in a call-response manner. oki kano is one of very few professional tonkori players who performs worldwide with his oki dub ainu band. the songs possess a mystical energy – when crows call accurately with ando’s brittle voice in the first song, it seems like natural powers join in with her music. her voice sounds like animals of the sky and the forest. oki kano: “it was a lot of fun to record with umeko ando. many ainu hesitate to break from tradition - if umeko hadn’t been so flexible to work with the younger generation and recording technology, this album would never have happened. our sessions were intense, and we were proud and happy about making such beautiful music.” upcoming in autumn: remixes of “ihunke” by tolouse lowtrax, m.rux, dj ground, el buho mark peters, gama, andi otto, and dreems. historical background: only recently (in 2008) have the ainu officially been acknowledged as indigenous people who are culturally independent from japan. this record is an example of how their music has been passed on through generations in the underground ainu communities while it was oppressed by the japanese hegemony. it deserves a huge audience. follow kompakt

following our 004 ep we present our first va release with northsouth records bossman and all round don henry hyde (aka harry mccanna) kicking things off. still talking epitomises the forward-thinking sound that is currently coming out of london - a perfect example of our ethos and aesthetic at the label. a tried and tested bomb that will do serious damage on any dance floor.

for russian electronic music, mikhail chekalin is not only a major character, who has affected the scene’s establishment and development, but also a kind of symbolic figure. his music has been praised by many in the west - from journalists and critics of all kinds to frank zappa and karlheinz stockhausen, while in moscow chekalin’s name was excluded from the official cultural agenda for a long time: he was accused of propaganda of foreign pro-western aesthetics and up until the end of the 80’s wasn’t allowed to release his works or travel abroad. this, however, didn’t interfere with him recording dozens of innovative electronic compositions and contributing greatly to the development of unofficial soviet art in general - for example, providing sound design for the famous exhibitions of twenty moscow artists on malaya gruzinskaya or arranging the first audiovisual performances on a specially constructed light organ.
however, just like all great artists, mikhail himself prefers to focus not on personal achievements, but on creativity. i don’t have a biography - only a discography - this quote of the author may become an entry point of sorts into the compilation presented. this archival collection of works recorded within the period from 1978 to 1987 are chekalin’s multigenre experiments ranging from spatial music (in essence, ambient’s precursor) to more contemporary synthesizer and post-symphonic compositions.

under cover for many years, this affie yusuf two tracker finally sees the light of day on the acclaimed mindyourhead imprint. comes on a generally deep green, mixed colour marbled 12’’ vinyl. affie yusuf paved the way uk acid house scene and so much more, releasing techno and acid throughout his career. mindyourhead records recognises that sometimes you need to look a little bit into the past to move ahead and has re-launched the label with this vinyl only release. ‘parrot soup’ is a fine example of just how a track title can have absolutely no relevance to the music whatsoever. this is a lovingly constructed example of how to convey images with sound, this music renders images brimming with joy and loss, icy cold chills and the warmth of the first rays of sun on a spring morning. tight, punchy drums with crisp 808 snares and driving toms lovingly complimented with dream-like pad sequences, soul searching strings and lush bassline form a quality crossover track that will appeal to lovers of many styles of techno and house. ‘something special’ is on a different tip, more driving and direct in style with the ‘everybody…’/ ‘something special’ vocal samples put to great use (need to be heard in context!) and that essential marching ‘affie acid’ bassline. the lead follows a similar pattern to the acid but pulls your head in a slightly different direction leaving the listener suitably twisted!! this proper ‘party acid’ has just the right level of balls to destroy a dancefloor without scaring off the faint of heart. lovely work affie!!

for those that knoe delves deeper into the archives once more to repackage a bundle of hard to find cuts on vinyl that have been staple supplies in ben s record bag over the years. the early to mid 2000s was a period of minimal techno overload, finding quality house music then was a challenge compared to today. rather than follow the herd, some european producers took influence from the original minimal pioneers and fused those approaches with house music themes in order to push a unique sound of the era. they turned minimal on its head and gave took it in a different direction. canson from switzerland released a handful of records between 2002 and 2005 that were a prime example of this aesthetic. stripped back beats with syncopated melodies - perfect cuts for those early sets or hazy morning sessions. the three tracks featured on this compilation were originally released on two solo eps for canson: itsudemo and holiday plug in, both of which have claimed squatter s rights in my record bag for almost 15 years. i don t think i ve played one early slot or house set without one of them. this record is quite a personal one for me as it s a representation of my deeper sound as a dj. now the original records are a little hard to find so im so glad to share my choice picks of cansons material on a my label.

david mayer’s career and background is marked by a desire to keep moving and experiencing new perspectives. having finally settled in berlin, the german dj and producer has built up an enviously diverse back catalogue on labels such as connected frontline, objektivity, gruuv, audiomatique and keinemusik. with his first release on acid pauli and nico stojan’s ouie label, mayer brings his trademark groove to the fore once more. ‘the call’ is a mid tempo chugger built around a kick, clap and 808 blip, before a more organic groove develops. the slowed down chants and wigged out synth line take the vibe into afro cosmic territory, without losing the original energy. ‘sooner’ is a little more urgent - a crisp, forward leaning rhythm and a deep, subby bass lead the way, before another frazzled synthesiser takes us on a melodic walkabout. ‘black queen’ is another example of mayer’s slick drum programming, keeping things zesty on the dance floor but with acres of space to lose yourself in.

here s one for all the hardcore disco and soul lovers out there, one of the finest and rarest manifestations of the legendary writing, arranging and production team of randy muller and jeff lane (skyy, bt express, brass construction, aquarian dream, spiders webb and many more!). first appearing as a columbia records disco series promo 12- in 1976 this is a wondrous example of that mid to late 70 s uptempo soul sound morphing into disco, and boy are we glad it did! drenched in pure philly vibes i m ready to give up my life is a real beauty, clocking in at over 9 mins of pure dance-floor joy with soaring strings and a driving rhythm. pure class all the way and one for the aficionados for sure. beautiful soul music that will certainly deliver the goods in the club indeed. as per the original 1976 promo release this 12- features the same program on both sides. this underground disco classic has been legally reissued by above board distribution in conjunction with the legal rights holders - sony music entertainment. this high quality repress features original columbia white label disco 12- artwork and has been remastered from sony s original sources by optimum mastering, bristol uk.

the pale and the colourful is the first album of internazionale presented on vinyl by posh isolation after a near flood of limited tape releases both through his own remarkable janushoved label and through posh isolation. the pale and the colourful is a logical summary of internazionales work up to this point and is the prime example of the sensual synthetic meditations he has come to be known for.
the clear pop sensibility to his compositions are clouded with noises and ambiguous field recordings and it is somehow hard to really figure out if the music intends to lift us up or hold us down. what is certain is that no internazionale release up to this point reaches the level of this new album.

over the course of the last decade, black pepper label boss jose manuel has proved to be one of electronic music s finest contemporary alchemists, conjuring percussive, intoxicating and otherworldly musical treats for such labels as tusk wax, kinfolk, kill the dj, optimo trax and music for dreams. the genius of manuel s productions lies in the italian s ability to conjure cracking cosmic compositions out of a diverse range of global rhythms, instruments and influences. rarely has this been more evident than on his debut release for nunorthernsoul, a four-track serving of dancefloor mysticism that puts mind-altering rhythms and saucer-eyed instrumentation front and centre. track, for example, the light and dreamy wrapped sumptuous balearic synthesizer chords and melodies around gentle hand percussion and drifting zambian vocals on the sublime journey in lusaka followed by the feverish, trance-inducing african rhythms, delay-laden chants, psychedelic acid lines and jangling jew s harp motifs of intense opener journey in lusanda , a ritualistic afro-cosmic onslaught ripe for peak-time plays. if the ep opener is all about being flat on your back and staring skywards, the follow up is all about druggy, heads down sweatiness! manuel s deep love of indian music is explored on journey in mumbai , where exotic sitar lines, fluttering clarinets and echoing, densely layered female vocals rise above a thick, tabla-fired groove. it s naturally hugely evocative and atmospheric - a fine dose of emotion-rich spirituality capable of inducing hallucinations in the straightest of listeners. to complete the ep, our hero travels even further east for journey in osaka , a fittingly percussive exploration of japanese music s past and present that also includes audible nods towards the poly-rhythmic drums of west africa. it s a superb combination of traditional instrumentation, 21st century electronics, heavyweight rhythms and mood-enhancing melodic flourishes. like the rest of the journeys in...ep, it s both hugely alluring and impeccably produced

when it comes to deep and soulful inspired house grooves with a touch of sweat and grit we like so much, few comes close to soulphiction. this four track ep got that and more. ear-grabbing opening track bizzness starts things off in classic soulphiction mode with its deliciously bass-heavy funk stomp. cart people is a fine slice of deep house going deeper and deeper as the groove develops. the first track on the flip, slow glow , brings warm vibes and great melodies together in a clever way. finally sweet dreams is another fine example of house music that is deep, full of soul and comfortingly loose, mr fingers style but done the soulphiction way.

the label’s latest offering comes from hamilton himself, who teams up with panick panick! label owner noha, offering a collaborative ep that is a fitting snapshot into the work of both individuals. the nohamilton ep gets underway with ‘lip service’, a rough-and-ready track with firm emphasis on a grinding, hypnotic loop that easily surpasses your average dj tool. highly finessed and progressing steadily, it’s the perfect example of how to do less with more. looking towards more sun-kissed planes, the duo deliver the ep s a2 track, a more heads- down cut that’s loaded with good-time grooves from the get go. sure to work a charm whenever it’s unleashed, ‘bored of life’ serves up an intriguing insight into both producers’ boundless studio output. romanian duo sit culminate matters with their ‘lip service’ rework. consisting of cristi cons and vlad caia, the pair have been excelling consistently, with both their resident advisor mix and latest release on the iconic sushitech label proving a potent reminder of this. taking the listener down the rabbit hole once more, they inject archie hamilton & noha s original with an eerie sheen, also adding an off-kilter baseline that’s hard not to get lost in. a suitably groove-led but unconventional interpretation, it closes off the ep with the sort of distinction we’ve come to expect from moscow.
