hello sailor recordings third release features esa brazilian remakes london based south african esa mervin granger is part of a unique breed of talent emerging on the electronic music scene. drawing influences from his roots but firmly looking towards the future, esa embodies a sound without limitations. esa has developed a distinct yet and expansive musical identity. a regular at many of the best underground parties, venues and festivals across the uk and europe, esa has also carved out a niche curating electronic music-focused educational programmes in cuba, east africa and south africa which forms part of the highlife world series project. continuing to further his knowledge and share his skills inspiring enthusiastic dj s and producers around the world.

the highlife world series is a collaborative series of releases by uk-based brian d’souza aka auntie flo and esa williams. the first three parts are to be released in quick succession in early 2015, beginning with cuba, followed by kenya and finishing with uganda. each release features original songs produced in collaboration with local musicians. all proceeds from each release will be sent back to the respective countries in order to fund further musical production costs in years to come. we will also be seeking various ways to distribute the music in each country so the music is freely available for the musicians to use at home.

esa returns with the final instalment for this highlife world series which included previous releases cuba and kenya. having been invited to attend the east africa music conference doadoa in jinja, uganda back in 2014 and again in 2015, esa shares the sounds of a new breed of talent and ideas emerging from east africa and beyond, showcases music not only from uganda but artist from burundi, rwanda, kenya and south africa who all attended the conference.

the second release from the hlanganani label lives up to its mo to provide a platform for talented producers from south africa to shine, focusing here on deep sixty, aka young and fast-rising producer johannesburg producer thabiso mamogwa. back in 2010, the producer made it to london to take part in the red bull music academy, which is when the hlang team first heard the tracks that make up the mme hayo ep whilst some studio time on the same trip with todd soundmurderer osborn resulted in the thursday nights track which mamogwa previously self-released. in addition to deep sixty s own deep terror mix of mme hayo, the label have coaxed some fine remixes out of esa and william kouam djoko.

next up in the highlife world series, we ake a trip to kenya where our man esa plays the role of producer for the first time with super talented local musicians sarabi and makadem (aka the fela of kenya). instantly timeless on both sides, see for yourself.

its with great pride (and a certain sense of defiance!) that tom and i present you with the 200th freerange release. despite the best efforts of three bankrupt distributors, an arsonist (who set the sony warehouse ablaze back in 2012) and a volatile market, we retained the fire in our bellies, a stiff upper lip, and most importantly an unrelenting passion for electronic music, we soldiered on and here we are at freerange 200!

after dancing with hnny under the disco ball and staying up late listening to mella dees warehouse tracks its time to go visit detroit with esa.

after nearly a year has passed by - and kitted out with heavy hitting drum timbres, hook laden nuances and a textured palette of unique effects - south african born esa makes a welcome return to the burek family fold with another ep that skirts the boundaries of the dance-floor and soaks up the sights and sounds of those on the peripheral edges. a family thats consisted of many strays and deviants being welcomed in, esas ep is another mellifluous fit for the croatian based house label that prides itself on beats that drip with greasy flavour and a fine follow on from his killer ‘serenity in a forbidden place ep for the label in july of 2013.

so far in the highlife series, weve touched on south america, the caribbean and turkey in our globetrotting excursions. our next port of call is south africa where h+p crew member, esa serves up two outstanding acidic takes on music from his homeland.

fina has been soaking up the sunshine over the past few weeks procrastinating over the best time to release its next summer cut. with global warming rubbing everyone up the right way, we feel now is as good a time as any to drop fina 004. originally from south africa, esa mervin granger may now be more glasgow concrete towers than table top mountain but his grooves are pure house pedigree. from his releases under his mervin granger moniker to exclusive remixes for ooft! the cape town cat was a natural choice for a very >summer< shuffling three track jaunt.title track veloore is immediately recognisable from its soft analogue piano chords, amalgamated with a dreamy filtered vocal and a bass line which nods to the acidic side of deep house. on the remix is erefaan pearce, a fellow south african who pins soul to every production he lays his hands on. reworking vocals and bass lines into an infectious frenzy that is almost impossible to resist, erefaan draws that sunshine feeling from every angle. think las salinas and you are nearly there. completing the ep on the flipside is galaxy, a deep vocal number paying homage to all the lazy dogs. cosmic deep house aimed purely at the terrace. fina records 004: we present… esa

esa & mervin granger returns jan 2011 with the second installment of his rememory music label project. >luxarama< is a stunning two track ep featuring an original track of the same name by esa & mervin granger, along with an edit by ali ooft and subcultures ross telford on the flipside as the midnight marauders.
esas rememory music project began earlier this year as the south african ex-pats main creative output, dedicated to his late father. the critically acclaimed debut vinyl >i stole some thunder< sold out quickly, making >luxarama< an eagerly anticipated release.

alan abrahams aka portable aka bodycode is an artist very much defined by his past and his journey from south africa to paris via berlin and lisbon has seen him develop into a critically acclaimed producer, singer and video artist working with some of the biggest players in house and techno. part of his constant drive to evolve and challenge himself, this autumn abrahams launches new project ranger, teaming up with london label waella s choice for the debut release. the five tracks on portable presents ranger are a delicate mélange of jazz , soul and electronic and one of abraham s most explicit nods to his south african roots. on the a-side, the ep makes a steady start with bazokonwaba accompanied by a lullaby from south african a capella group korus, hailing from the small township of mbekweni in the western cape. they also feature heavily on the ep s most exuberant moment in nomaliso - already a favourite in esa s recent boiler room - and the more languid b-side opener indaba with a choir of cowbells all harmonizing in unison. reset and vessel provide a self-reflective conclusion to the ep, holding their own as instrumentals with cameroonian bass player stan on bass and parisian saxophonist chisneg lending a hand on the latter. early support from tama sumo, lakuti, gilles peterson, rinse fm, esa, stamp the wax, dimensions recordings
