matthew herbert and goldsmiths universitys in-house record label nx records presents the latest in their series of experimental electronic vinyl 12-s. nx14x showcases the work of two boundary pushing goldsmiths students: first, uk born and south africa raised composer galina juritz, whose chopped and spliced rnb doused in lush string arrangements enduces a fidgety unease and zero gravity lushness in equal measure. and second, rising dj and producer harry rodger, with two cuts of organic, summery techno that would sound perfectly at home pumping out of the nts radio speakers into a sun-baked gillett square.

support for my life at 45 part 1 came from huey morgan and craig charles on bbc 6music the second instalment of dr rubbefunk s my life at 45 series. canvas cathedral on the a-side is a jazzy all-instrumental affair that will have you head-nodding like nobody s business. over uptempo hip-hop flavoured beats reminiscent of early 90s golden era hip hop, chopped and looped riffs from sax man ben castle give way to rolling melodies and rapid fire solos. on the flip, unstoppable gospel powerhouse izo fitzroy is here, flexing her soulful tones over one of the most elastic basslines ever pressed on wax. underpinned by signature laidback drums that groove like a classic rhythm section of yesteryear, tasteful guitars and chiming electric piano weave their way between izo s lyrics and, bingo! that s a little blahzay right there! always keen to give the djs a bonus, the good doctor even squeezes some canvas beats onto the 7- for good measure.

the tel-aviv based label parallax brings yogg and pharaoh together for their 8th vinyl release. it starts off with the epic title track, a laid-back bassy groove surrounded by crispy hits and shifted electrical noises, building up to a climatic second part which fuses a lot of the producers unique soundscapes, all on a hypnotic pounding rhythm section. this is followed by a quirky broken electronica short, -ompti-, chopped-up modular sweeps and lush melodic hints create this uniquely structured a2 track. the b-side starts of with -maurice-, a more direct and intensive techno cut, which also breaks into an energetic – wobbly 2nd section which also features many of their unique sound explorations in a dramatic final section. b2, -abadei- has a deeper buildup approach for most of it, starting from a pure yet uneven rhythm section, and growing into a mass of counterparts and layers of noise and crackle. the ep ends with an unlisted locked-groove, an intense and dirty industrial-techno groove.

for our next excursion, we’re off to the library. in search of library records that is - you know the type, the crazy rare records used for soundtracks and such and such. we have a sick selection of synthed-up beats and pieces chopped together by one earl jeffers, making the most out of his international library digging card* (*not a real thing).
for those that don’t know, cardiff’s earl jeffers is one half of darkhouse family, regular family at our sister label, first word, on which they released their debut album “the offering” late last year. earl is a prolific producer in his own right, also releasing over the years under the aliases chesus and metabeats on labels like mcde, fat city and local talk, collaborating with artists like byron the aquarius, action bronson and kamaal williams / henry wu, turning his hand ably to house, hip hop, jungle, jazz and more. all this in addition to running his own label, mélange records.
a dedicated digger and record collector first and foremost, earl has provided us with a quadruple set of heavyweight stuttery sci-fi boom bap. in earl’s words: “this record was mostly inspired by my penchant for the more electronic / synthesized jams, mostly replayed from the original compositions then thrust in to 2028 and beyond….”

the next release on leading french label zone is a very special one indeed from long time friend of the label and pioneering electro figure kittin, the artist formerly known as miss kittin. her standout original comes with an equally impressive remix from truncate. a long time stalwart of the electroclash scene who has put out many seminal singles, kittin has famously collaborated with the hacker and felix da housecat and mixed up new wave and techno in arresting new ways for decades. her albums have always been hailed as hugely accomplished and the prolific and innovative frenchwoman has worked with numerous top labels. now back once more in 2018 with her first solo single in some time, she is in fine form. her offering here, ‘eacid’, is a timeless piece of deep techno with brain melting bass and twinkling yet menacing keys. her own vocals are twisted and chopped up into wordless forms that add layers of intrigue and the whole thing is brilliantly broody. a breakdown at the mid point allows you to catch your breath as her voice refracts round the airwaves, then the icy hi hats and rumbling drums and bass land again with subtly uplifting, light emitting chords rising in the background. all in all, this is one of kittin’s most special and evocative tracks of recent times. remixing is truncate, the deep techno artist who runs a label of the same name and has released his killer wares on 50weapons. his version is more wild and flailing, with the keys becoming more manic, the drums darting about all over the place and the voice becoming more paranoid and trippy.

in 2017, benedikt frey released his breathtaking debut album with the esp institute, artificial, and now as we finally come up for air, we’re more than proud to offer an eclectic collection of remixes that’s nothing short of essential. side a leads with h for hysteria remixed by a beloved hero, nicolas chaix a.k.a. i:cube, one of the most prolific and respected electronic artists paris has to offer. his touch is considered and elegant, imbuing the track with a tasteful 303+808 backbone to support an array of patiently floating melodies and angelic vocal samples. following this, tolouse low trax of du&#776,,,,,sseldorf’s infamous salon des amateurs remixes the same track, stripping instrumentation down to a skeletal palette of bass guitar and stabbing percussive punctuations, chopped up inna minimalist stylee that has become his beat-making signature. side b leads with a remix by another du&#776,,,,,sseldorfer, dj normal 4, whose re-imagination of private crimes takes us for an even more menacing ride, half-timing the tempo and skillfully rolling out a barrage of jungle snares from rave days of yore. closing the release is the most aggressive remix of them all, a bonafide techno beatdown of the same track by dalo, the co-producing artist to whose haunting vocals lace the original version. her dark vision opens with sparse industrial drums that blossom into a driving assault of raw machinery, definitely not for the faint-of-heart. an all-around solid release here, fun for all the family... more than just the tip!

our good friend riccardo aka. black loops joined rough limited with his buddy innocent soul from italy. they made three classic house cuts for this vinyl only release. >the lady< is opening the ep - a classic homage to all old school chicago house tracks with a chopped vocal sample. listening to the b-side, there is >from the streets< a more disco influenced track with pianos and a moog baseline. with a raw & authentic house stomper there is >smoke signals< on b2 to round up the whole package. enjoy!

you got the stuff is not lovely day - that much is true. this ones a wigged out, extended, trip into deep space from 1978 that is truly baffling. of course, it features bill singing for the first half of the track but then all of a sudden we re launched into a cosmic wormhole as everything just falls back and the track is stripped of any earthly qualities. people find themselves asking this, this is bill withers? as lazer guided synths and rock solid drums pull us into the sonic vortex. truly amazing. obviously a nugget like this has not gone unnoticed and has been edited and chopped and sampled deftly by the more sarcastic, left-field oriented crate diggers out there but it has never been reissued legitimately - until now! a hugely sought after and collectible gem right here, backed with the wistful slow jam look to each other for love as per the original 1978 columbia promo 12inch version. this left-field, cosmic classic has been legally reissued by above board distribution in conjunction with the legal rights holders sony music entertainment. this high quality repress features original columbia pink label disco 12inch artwork and has been remastered from sonys original sources by optimum mastering, bristol uk.

sweat it out up the perspiration levels to 10 with this modern day rework of kwanzaa posse s 1993 tribal infused musika , by the much in form yolanda be cool. a driving beat and dynamic bassline are interspersed with the posse s euphoric chants firmly placing this a dancefloor destroyer. the first of three remixes comes from babert. turning musika into a miami vice style synth laden boogie number, complete with uplifting piano stabs and a full bodied bass. flip it over and things get a little more sinister. both ideal for the basement club setting as much as they d work in the big room clubs. gotsome revolve their remix around the chopped up tribal chants of kwanzaa posse - enhancing the expansive build ups and breakdowns to new heights. to close it out, dateless strips things back with a huge pulsating bass / kick combo whilst dubbing out the chants to be dropped in at choice moments before those heavyweight drops.

2018 repress ... well. where do we start with deep inside ? originally released in the golden nyc house era of 1993, this 5 tracker literally smashed everything in sight. and still does now! the epitome of an evergreen, all-time classic release. masters at work louie vega and kenny dope were on a major roll in this era, producing, remixing, dj-ing and everything in-between, these guys put in ridiculous work. they are joined on this ep by a roll-call of names and collaborators, erick morillo engineering the title track? check. maurice joshua on co-production duties? you got it. vocals by ms. barbara tucker? they re there. killer, rock hard drums? stacks of soul? masterfully chopped up disco samples? all present. serious stuff. sometimes a record just manages to capture and distill the true essence of what this is all about and deep inside is one such record, it bears all the hallmarks of golden era maw, all the signposts of what was happening in nyc s clubs in the early to mid 90 s were there within it s grooves. you know a record is good when it s still being, quite literally, hammered nearly 25 years later! now, remastered, and reissued with the full involvement of strictly rhythm this seminal piece of nyc house history is made available again with all original, full sleeve artwork intact as per the 1993 original. this one s a straight up essential for any self-respecting dance aficionado. you know what to do!

kim ann foxmans firehouse imprint storms into 2018 with an extra special re-release of the 1994 rave classic scott richmond and john selway aka psychedlic research lab, keep on climbin.the package features both original mixes alongside two outstanding remixes from deetron and kim ann foxman. mix 1 and mix 2 sound as glorious now as they did when they were released. mix 1, a bold, breakbeat construct, chopped vocal and emerging acid lines. mix 2 places four to the floor. it’s deeper with added percussion, soft chord stabs and an almighty breakdown to the drop. deetron makes his debut on firehouse with a tough, grinding version, underpinned by his signature, gnarling bassline sound. kim ann foxman incorporates acid lines to her revision. it builds intensely from start to finish, using angela johnsons iconic vocal loop to perfection.

ab syndrom, the berlin duo, is coming with their third album. plastik is a bit like the coming of age album of the band. it tells stories of growing up emotionally and being played into a hard and post capitalistic environment. nevertheless you will find some quite romantic lyrics and songs between lyrical metaphors and a rough and urban reality in berlin neukölln, their neighborhood. the music on plastik is mainly a percussion driven and electronic laden journey. not your average pop arrangements but subtle compositions and laid back vocals with a certain chopped and screw twist. the bands musical projection is a most consequent advancement of their three albums and their body of work so far. bennet seuss, singer and composer is defining his own style in writing autobiographic lyrics with a certain twist to the obscure and umtransparent. a great album for sure.

dropping on rekids this may, butch remixes good luck - basement jaxxs ubiquitous 2004 single featuring lisa kekaula. appearing on kish kash, basement jaxxs third studio album, the unforgettable single was nominated for a grammy in the best dance recordings category and also reached number 12 on the uk singles chart and number 2 on hot dance club play in the us. good luck also featured as the opening theme of 2004 anime movie appleseed, victoria’s secret fashion show in 2003 and 2005, and a version without lyrics was used for the opening sequence of bbc’s uefa euro 2004. real name bu&#776,,,lent gu&#776,,,rler, german producer butch has been a formidable force within house and techno for over two decades, enchanting crowds from all across the globe with his technical performances. highly regarded for producing compelling grooves, his releases have appeared on labels like desolat, cocoon, rekids and sei es drum, not to mention collaborating alongside virginia, c. vogt and ricardo villalobos (as butric). receiving regular early support from villalobos, butch has provided three different renditions of good luck and the remix is a rhythmic roller from the off, featuring numerous elements from the original whilst generating a cacophony of percussion as kekaula’s iconic voice is chopped and looped – the result is highoctane and geared for the dancefloor. the dub strips things back, purely using segments of the vocal for instrumental purposes as a whirring bassline joins deep synths and mesmerising effects. tying it all together, the drum tool is a high-tempo percussive cut produced for peaktime dj sets

rising greek producer g.u.s steps up on equivalence with some pumped up vintage techno sounds that take more than a few cues from the uk.shelf cloud strikes a fine balance between tough and dreamy, using a twitchy set of drums moving at a decent pace and flooding them with atmospheric pads and a slice of vocal that forms a central hook to the track. halo goes even deeper into british territory with its chopped up breakbeat funk calling to mind the dexterous sample magic of stasis, and then haze phenomenon heads into deep tech house territory riding a pumped up shuffle beat and swooping pads.

89:ghost is on fire at present, having thrown down killer releases from todd sines, logic system and tomoki tamura over the past year. tommy vicari jnr is a great addition to the roster, bringing a freaky, wobbly and distinctly hi tech approach on all that matters that will have party people freaking out in a whole new way. things at night takes a completely different approach with its focus on delicately chopped up piano hooks. tlk 2 me wt yr bdy flips the script yet again with a roughneck, ardcore sound palette and some filtered house elements riding atop a booming low end. likely story finishes this varied ep off with a cheeky garage house strut that will have just as many fans as the other killer jams on this well rounded record.
