overview roll the dice is the swedish duo consisting of malcolm pardon and peder mannerfelt. pardon is a storied composer of film and television music. mannerfelt s acclaimed third solo album ‘controlling body’ cemented him as in the top handful of creative forces working in experimental electronic music. this theatrical, surprising, world premiere performance cemented the two musicians as spearheads of a fractured type of future basement jazz. for this record they selected extracts in 2017.

marshstepper are the most radical incarnation of ascetic house, the collective and publishing house based in the desert city of tempe, arizona. marshstepper’s dark electronic ritualism is performative, violent, unusual, shocking, unpredictable and raw. during their berlin atonal show in 2016, they were joined by drew mcdowall, jonas römnberg and juan mendez.

peder mannerfelt supplies four jams fashioned out of his own exceptional live show at the festival. raw, unsoftened, brutely analog sound from an ems synthi aks punctures space in an oddly futuristic rhythmic experiment, gesturing at a brand new way of thinking about electronic music. the cuts are also packaged in a special 12” featuring artwork based on his own breathtaking live audio- visual show.

synthesiser genius max loderbauer (nsi, sun electric, vilod, moritz von oswald trio) and techno experimentalist jacek sienkiewicz (recognition) combined for a stunning live show on the opening night of festival 2015. blending harmonic drones and almost unrecognizably distended vocal samples with adroitly weighted melodic passages, this collaboration was a masterclass in expertly crafted ambient music from two of the genres’ leading exponents. two passages from this set have been mastered and cut to vinyl in a special 12” with artwork by pedro maia based on his visuals for the show.

berlin atonal is proud to pick up on a tradition begun in 1984 with the publication of two volumes of live recordings from the 1983 edition of the festival. those records bore witness to the most inventive, adventurous sounds of the festival, and therefore of their time, containing live bits from psychic tv, la loora and zev. berlin atonal vol. 3 carries this custom forward three decades with selections from four of the standout performances of berlin atonal 2014. of course cabaret voltaire’s lauded and historical ?rst show in over 20 years is featured, richard h kirk’s no-nostalgia and machinery driven set ?rmly putting the cabaret voltaire project in a future-facing direction. miles whittakers surprising and muscular live performance also contributes a cut, as does festival favourite fis with his characteristically lumpy, textural soundscapes.

body sculptures is a contemporary project that brings together five unique voices in european experimental electronic music today. the formative element is the collaborative pact between sweden’s northern electronics and denmark’s posh isolation. last year marked both body sculptures debut live performance - a highly notorious set at berlin atonal festival 2015 - as well as their debut recording, “the base of all beauty is the body”. the disparate elements that have come to inform the project thus far are further refined and encoded in their new lp, “a body turns to eden”.

when the fight-or-flight response edges in—adrenaline coursing and perception wired—our behaviour is especially spiked by an emotional intensity. and with that peak comes a trough. it’s a chemical freefall, just like a crush.
presented by posh isolation, “crush” marks the beginning of the end for varg’s turbulent nordic flora series. getting us lost in an exhilarating maze of fainting beauty and breaks, the fifth piece of the series invites us to relish the harmony just as much as the dissonance.
following on from the previous iterations of the series, particularly the widely acclaimed “nordic flora series pt.3: gore-tex city”, the cast of collaborators remain familiar. some faces are more prominent on this occasion, while others were folded into the series for the first time at last year’s berlin atonal festival where varg’s nordic flora program was unveiled.

whether or not techno music is destructive and to what degree is fair concern to have, but there s no denying that it can call upon our primal instinct of surrendering to rhythms together with everyone around the proverbial camp fire. sure, the camps of today are the clubs, and the fires are strobes, but that doesn t change the essence of rituals that we continue practicing. the release stays close to 130 bpm and offers efficient tools for the dancefloor: airy, for one, represents a syncopated narrative of wonder and magical realism, whereas in the hands of gotshell it becomes less contemplative, shifting to a more direct perspective. backed by cascading kicks xi takes a dive into atonal realm, and kujin —the most brutal number of ep—offers a densely packed treble range running above the hammering 3/3 kicks. with hydra, it s a trip laden with wondrous soundscapes, shamanic percussion and sensations of unexplored grounds emanating from the bassline, after which the closer trioptic provides a rebellious theme fitting for times of unrest and resistance.

cleveland is forever in search of the brown note. this is his second offering for the esp institute. side a’s tusk is a beautiful paradox—rhythm programs that churn like the inner workings of a grandfather clock, unmistakably mechanical, yet fashioned through muted analogue instrumentation that paints a deceptively organic picture. the crystallized jangle of fm synth voices toy with the softened drum patterns and vibrant animal-like chord gestures over nearly seven minutes of splendor. on side b, aku digs further into mysticism, manifesting digital jungle themes, cleverly abstracted through erratic bleeps, distant tribal drums, atonal flutters and synthetic bird calls. the cinematic quality of clevelands production shines through both tracks, but its aku that sweeps us from reality to embark on a moonlit expedition in search long lost treasures, proving cleveland a virtuoso skilled in building complex narratives with sound. these two songs will modulate your frequencies.

kalbata has turned his hand to many styles over the years, not least the excellent soundsystem explorations of congo beat the drum, but on this second release for his label brush & broom, he s decided to fling himself into the fiery pit of acid while paying tribute to 90s motocross bikes. honda is dripping with 303, punctuated by a twitchy set of drums, while yamaha takes a diversion into moodier territory, letting hazy chords set the tone for an energised but defiantly heads down acid workout. suzuki is a bit spicier, capturing the essence of up-for-it early trax records but edging it into more hypnotic, looped up territory. toyota finishes the ep off with an atonal bleep out with an electro undercarriage

a mixture of live recording and studio post-production, on jupiter sounds unique to any other album sun ra made. the arkestra reflects a disco pulse right back on itself, and delivers one of the most cohesive albums of their career. the title track is a masterpiece of gentle atonal harmony, while ufo pushes along at a cracking disco-ish pace with fierce brass and spacey dub effects. this is a timeless ra classic.

zoe mc phersons exploration of this world on string figures is a deeply rhythmic, immersive and forward-thinking piece of elec-tronic-leaning music that remains just as danceable as it does experimental. the album is fundamentally one of duality, exploring the traditional and the contem-porary, organic and electronic, audio and visual, history and the future. rooted in this duality is also a core theme around string being one of the most ancient and playful art forms and the seemingly infinite possibilities it offers in terms of shapes, structures and figures lines up with this as a trans-global art project. one that over time will involve video art, choreography, 3d motion design, macro film, instrumental and electronic sound. although for now is being presented through an av performance, films and a record with mc pherson collaborating with director alessandra leone over the seven tracks (which are laid out as chapters) the record explores glitchy elec-tronics, dub-tinged grooves, polyrhythms, and a huge array of instruments that takes in quiet blasts of atonal sax alongside wonky synths.

eomac expands the roster of his recently inaugurated eotrax imprint with the introduction of two forerunners in berlin s techno scene: kaltès and nene h. both have built respected reputations as exciting artists to watch, as kaltès organizes tresor berlins female:pressure-affiliated party series and nene h. turned heads with her fountain of fire performance at berlin atonal festival. their collaborative record, the protest ep, presents a call to arms and an empowered take on gnarly techno with a stormy industrial underbelly.

man power returned to his northern home for one last waltz. this is their joint offering for the esp institute. on side a, man power welcomes us with tistish, stepping slightly out of his comfort zone and employing a boxy breakbeat to create a dose movement. this contrasts his signature fatty bassline and together they establish a ground on which to stack layers of atonal square and sawtooth waves. about halfway through he introduces a massively seductive string lead and for the remainder of the ride this palette of sounds coalesce in dark orchestral beauty. on side b, man power’s cohorts last waltz deliver nee shitteru, a true stomper of a track complete with in-your-face toms and off-time percussion patterns, an intense driving acid line, and aggressive shamanic chanting. throw in some crash cymbals, sci-fi sound effects and a smattering of gamelan and it amounts to an overwhelmingly chaotic and psychedelic trip. these two songs will have you speaking in tongues.

this may look like just another lp, but in reality, it s a journey. i always made electronic music, but sometimes i wanted to get a musical point across that a synthesizer couldn t reach: the human touch, the perfection of imperfections, atonal experiments, the euphoria of the slightly out-of-tune fuzz guitar. so 7 years ago, my friend weytkin and me started a guitar combo to see what we could do with our collection of guitars and vintage equipment. the only machine i was 100% familiar with was the drummer: my trusty roland tr-808.- – ruud lekx (rude 66, jagdstaffel 66, lekx).

this autumn, wah wah 45s are very proud to present their latest signing, an outfit who ve garnered huge praise from jools holland, are darlings of the guardian s music reviews pages, and have set festivals alight up and down the country with their unique melange of sounds. for a good few years, honeyfeet has been a conduit for the ideas and expressions of an exotic mixture of manchester based musicians. jazz? yes, some of that! folk? stick that in there! hip-hop? i thought you d never ask! someone once called it folk-hop and barrelhouse-pop, and that s just vague enough to make sense. it helps that they are fronted by ríoghnach connolly, real world s newest signing and -a remarkable singer and flautist who can ease from irish traditional influences to soul- (the guardian). this extraordinary band s debut single for wah wah 45s, sinner, was originally affectionately known as boingy squelch, after the unconventional sounds trombonist biff roxby used in his early demos. ríoghnach conveys the story of a woman who never intends on staying at home -chained to the sink- - -i may be a sinner, but i m not a slave-. in that way, the song is a rejection of outdated, traditional roles. since their previous album, 2013 s it s a good job i love you, keyboardist john ellis jumped on board as full-time member, bringing his unique musical presence. this enabled the development of a more texturally adventurous style, as witnessed with the dual atonal solo between himself and guitarist ellis davies on sinner. similarly, for their next lp, orange whip, engineer, bassist and spiritual guide lorien edwards makes his honeyfeet recording debut, so completing the -kitchen- of this very special band. sinner is released on limited 7- vinyl (100 copies only!) on october 20th and comes complete with a woozy, low slung club-friendly mix from former innocent sorcerer, polish dj and producer envee. the album, orange whip, will be released on wah wah 45s in the summer of 2018.

since his last appearance on hemlock (2015 s double ep hek025) hodge has produced a seemingly effortless sequence of celebrated eps and collaborations for livity sound, berceuse heroique and no corner. equally comfortable squaring up with heavyweights such as randomer and peder mannerfelt as he is maintaining a prolific solo production output, hodge has cemented himself as a leading voice in uk dance music and a champion of the elusive sweet spot where functional techno resonates with soundsystem culture. a quick listen through his recent ra mix is a great way to keep up to speed with his recent output. one for the hemlock fans who have been patiently tolerating this year s more experimental cuts. swing for the fences is straight down to business getting the kicks in below one of those ear-wormer percussive atonal toplines hodge does so well… the drop is one of the heaviest we ve heard this year and tipped to raise some fingers, open mouths and spill drinks across dancefloors and tv studios worldwide. less pool cue more pool party aomame is a breezy melodic (patio) heater powered by tough drums and intricate percussive work. arranged for both the dancers and the heads it freely refreshes and translates the main theme with a precision and playfulness that few producers can match. medway will warm up or cool out the dance with big room sirens and some rude detuned drum work. still no messing about on the b2: it s a hodge thing all the way.

imagine apollo 13 mission commanded by mika vainio and erp and you might get an idea of the intergalactic atmospherics crawling from the new phi chapter. slovenian minimalism afficionado evano returns to phi with an icy pulse that starts the electro romanticism on the first track and soon turns to hypnotic four to the floor pace. atonal minimalism intensifies with the last two tracks but manages to make the vacuum of music space sound incredibly human.

this release journeys to mid-80s argentina and the highly sought after 2nd solo album of carlos cutaia. inspired by the new electronic sounds emanating from europe, this multi instrumentalist offers more than a pastiche, embedding his own melancholy in a unique and classic nueva wave-album. classically trained, carlos cutaia started as a composer for dance and theatre, before spending much of the 1970s as a member of a number heavy rock, prog rock and rock-fusion bands of some note, before finally going solo with the city of distant tones album in 1983. however, by the time of his 2nd solo album in 1985, as his country finally left behind a long period of military control and enjoyed greater freedoms, carlos was fully immersed in the new electronic pop sounds imported with hungry ears from europe. teaming up with fellow composer, keyboardist and producer, daniel melero and alejandro oucinde, the futurism of kraftwerk and gary numan s tubeway army was embraced, but also adapted to fit their native land, just as it was understand a new modernity. starting with the swagger of visiones incomunicadas, the template is set. sharp drum machines, semi-nonchalant, half spoken vocals set the scene, while chopped guitar and smart synth lines fit the over riding feeling of an intelligent nonchalance. things however, do go beyond the straightjacket of euro-pop as heard on the anthemic programacion and avant twist of the first of two piano-ambient pieces aproximacion dos and its companion piece uno found on the b side). eric satie and minimalism are clearly not far away. however, it is side b opener sensacion melancolica that captures the sound to perfection. a balearic masterpiece, capturing in it s title the over-riding atmospheric of a unexplained sadness, a loss. operativo and the poem humanos de america bring things to an end of a feeling melancolica.

brand new transatlantyk release contains elusive synth works of sasha zakrevska aka poly chain. she likes to call herself a ukrainian ambient chavette and the title of her debut album is a tongue-in-cheek spin on eno s classic. music for candy shops is much more sticky and syrupy than its famous predecessor though. in every track on this record poly chain s rich and warm synth textures are glazed with another layer of radioactive sweeting. from atonal melodies on top to occasional spicing in form of odd reverbs, delays and drum sounds - it s all there. let me tell you straight up: this candy shop serves some weird sort of sweets, inducing hallucinations, anxious feelings of omniscience and transcendency. use with caution! available as a 200 copies only vinyl lp

an object resists changing its state of motion with inertia. what pushes back must then be even more vigorous in order to create a uid movement. an example of the force that embodies this dynamic can be found clearly on the appropriately titled inertia, aiken’s much anticipated return to chronicle. the spanish artist has been spending years honing his craft, focusing on sharp, distinct sounds that create a pure sense of kinetic energy. the title track of the ep bolsters a erce disarray of carefully (de)constructed atonal synthwork and a rhythm section that is set to detonate. it is then followed by “axial”, a track that stays as true to modular miscalculations as it does to stripped down techno, combining both in a subliminal cessation of sanity. however aiken isn’t done there. he continues with “magnetism”, which throws a brick in the glass of conventionality with its earth-shaking layers of textured momentum. phased pads then wash over “soul drama”, bringing the entire experience to an emotionally laced denouement. after the potency of his last record on chronicle as well as his releases on imprints such as his own label timeline and the spanish powerhouse semantica, inertia marks a de nitive step forward for an already exceptionally de ned artist.

the original track is an industrial and distortion experimental project of the owner label federico amoroso which contain a really metallic and dark sound. positive centre his remix it s a dark walk into industrial noise and distortion audio bites, with ambiental moment and powerfull distroy counter. the first track of b side it s remixed by italian producer plukkk which heavy dominating with relentless attitude and distortion driving kick - drum, with big impact for the dancefloor. the last remix is an collaboration with the japanese producer yuuki sakai which has an original idea to add a lyrical singer in the middle of distortion broken techno beat. the new label started well: arriving the big names of the genre and industrial noise skarn division label founder federico amoroso, a new label that will touch many different genres and musical nuances: techno, industrial, noise, drone, ambient and experimental, a melting pot of sounds joined together by a passion for harsh corners and futuristic electronics. artists who remix the first disc of the founder federico amoroso are positive centre (who played several times in places like berghain and tresor), plukkk and yuuki sakai: every producer knows that long in the field of industrial techno and noise music (just look, to name one, the presence of the same positive centre to the latest editions of the berlin atonal festival, or even yuuki sakai: remixed by oscar mulero .. and so on!)

wilde calm records is proud to present a new ep of modern percussion edits from brooklyn producer boonlorm. this collection of reworks was started around the same time boonlorm began recording string figures, his album of prepared piano house music. it shares a similar sound to string figures rich combination of tonal, atonal and percussive timbres. by adding his raw drum programming to tease out the latent techno qualities in these modern percussion opuses, boonlorm once again pays homage to chicago, detroit, and the 20th century avant-garde.

belgian producer joris biesmans (aka cashmere* and benn lian) delivers a counterweight to the fast food music that ram-raids its way into todays mainstream consciousness, with a project named tve - the virtual escape indicating his urge to escape from todays data-saturated, musicas mass-industrial-product environment. musically, tve aims for an aesthetic ambush incorporating strange & self-made hardware instruments, tape machines, non-standard structures, atonal abstraction, noise, distortion and randomness - openly embracing imperfections instead of smoothing them out with calibrated presets & templates. to this end, tve has brought two masters of this approach on board for the labels debut ep and with creme organization alumni legowelt and asok bringing forth their own inimitable style on remixes of biesmans delightfully askew original productions. keep an eye out for more engaging oddities on future tve releases to come. early support from: massimiliano pagliara, tim sweeny, ambivalent, lando

conceived at a poignant intersection of killawatt’s existence, the fazed ep evokes an introverted and pedantic nature, tailored for the individual over the collective. produced during a period of self-reflection and change, the ep signifies a positive gear selection in the mind-set and approach to sound design and music as a whole. a period of sustained momentum and the challenging of previous attitudes resulted in killawatt consciously isolating himself from specific negativity in and around him, through forced positivity, elimination of destructive environments and a more embracing approach to introversion, inner thoughts and sentiments are brought to the fore and expose a rarely seen fragility unaffected by external influence. remixes provided by bristol based, peng sound boss ossia and berlin atonal favorites sergie rezza (dj deep & roman poncet).

downfall theory embarks on a new chapter as it hosts a full release from a producer other than its owner, sanys. myztical isn’t exactly a newcomer though, and the ukrainian producer has already two releases to his credit on nicz records. given the title of his debut on downfall theory, it is no surprise to learn that myztical is using it as a means to question reality. inspired by the science fiction writer philip k dick and decades of electronic music, he certainly succeeds on venturing into uncharted territories on the title track. muffled, repetitive vocal samples, an atonal rhythm and relentless, slightly distorted kicks show that quite often, simplicity is the most potent ingredient. on “faith of our fathers”, myztical disappears farther down the wormhole. splintered rhythms, deranged howls and a deranged filter push his vision for broken beat techno into the abyss. “substance d” sees the ukrainian hotshot return to a more linear approach, pounding kicks underpin ghostly shrieks before a breakdown sees the track descend into grimy, woody mcbride-style acid. the accompanying vocal sample, the embodiment of a bad trip, only serves to accentuate the track’s darkly hallucinogenic qualities. finally, there’s “shifted realities” - it revisits the jagged filters of “faith of our fathers”, but does so against the backdrop of a pounding industrial kick and a grungy, low-slung rhythm.
