berlin-based obstacle records returns for its second release with another ep that draws on uk garage heritage while offering its own fresh take via a trio of newer names to watch out for.the ep’s original track comes from lesus - a hitherto unknown name that splices its stripped down ghost-esque rhythmic backbone with an uneasy chiming melody. the a2’s remix from obi - another name to keep track of - retains the pace & 2step stylings of the original while combining it with a chicago house sensibility.on the b side we find two alternate versions from the mysterious prince of ethiopia. the 808 version mutates the track into a old school hip hop instrumental, with the aforementioned 808 sounds to the fore, replete with vocal sampels, record scratches and ray guns. the mt40 version takes those elements, loses the snarling bassline, and pins it all to a broken beat rhythm, once again underlining obstacle’s reverence for uk dance music culture & its desire to push it into surprising new territory.

alex suarez is part of a new breed of producers based out of brooklyn carving out their own unique sound experimenting in the world of raw primordial electronics. under the name cienfuegos, he has prior releases on brooklyn s primitive languages imprint as well as the france s unknown precept label-with his new -lost in god s country- ep we see him debut on the new york centered bank records. through the four tracks cienfuegos harkens back to the time of early industrial music, not far off from the early transmissions of spk or even hinting at sounds akin to e.g. oblique graph. suarez has a knack for developing textures and tension in his music sewing it all together with plodding rhythms and the occasional creeper vocal. heavyweight stuff coming most highly recommended.

repress 2016 ...linkwood gives us whats up with the underground? hot, urgent, joyous jazz/house music thats guaranteed to ignite any dancefloor be warned, spontaneous human combustion is a real risk when this record hits. fudge fingas drops the heavyweight ‘escape. with samples from cult tv series ‘the prisoner, huge synth lines and beats like vintage glenn underground this is definitely odd house music turn it up! the complainers bacon rolls is bizarre funk from somewhere else entirely if chris cunningham made a porno flick then this would be the soundtrack. plus theres extra sickness from whats up with the beats? (rather than a mere dub, this is almost an entirely different jump-up disco track) and a bonus firecracker skit.

rediscovered 80’s british acid house gem ‘cortina kidz’ recently made a serious impact on andy butler’s mr. intl with remixes from factory floor and juan maclean & tim sweeney. hot on the heels, moscow’s lipelis’ steps in to remix with striking results. pitchfork enthused of the recent reissue being “a chilly acid-house track operating the influence of both soft cell and the specials,’ xlr8r as “drenched in dark and sleazy overtones, the track encapsulates a downtrodden time in london”, while ransom note noted “cortina kidz is more than just an old skool oddity- it s a banger that s stood the test of time”. originally recorded on london’s stoke newington road in 1987, produced by a young tim brinkhurst ahead of his imminent record deal with virgin records with his band soho, and long before his current role as manager of mercury prize winners, young fathers, ‘cortina kidz’ remained undiscovered and the eccentric spoken word overlay and weird lead vocal made it very unlike the prevailing dance music sound of the time. leonid lipelis explains that “since it’s a reissue of a relatively unknown record it gave me a certain freedom of expression (when it’s something well known and classic you re likely to produce something more serious). i came up with more of a pop song, structured with a vocoder for the main version and had fun playing with vocal samples for the dub mix, paying homage to the 80s sound in both.- lipelis’ recent release on lies records has gained him support from four tet to dimitri from paris. he also runs a side project for hardware jams called tmo and co-runs low budget family records.

birdsmakingmachine are back on track and continuing their series in style with bmm 007. kicking off things on a1, at 124 bpm, “the draft” is a joyful number that bursts with relentless energy while managing to fuse sharp metallic drum patterns with juggling ambient hooks. the more dancefloor-oriented track is nevertheless found on a2. as the title suggests, “area 52” is quite literally a journey through the unknown and mysterious, a metaphor for the deep minimal house amazon, a track that stands out with an extra subby bassline, swinging hihats and those ever-so-warm sequenced analog pads in the background. flip the record over and you find yourself with two slightly more industrial affairs, “the voice of kudha” on b1 offering a breakier alternative than it’s predecessors and “zagonity”, on b2, galloping its way to close off the record with shuffling vocal hits and an amalgamation of bouncing hats and snares.

argentine producer leonel castillo unveils yet another moniker with this new eponymous 77ks series. remaining the best-kept secret the latin american electronic music scene has brought to us so far, leonel is an icon and at the same time virtually unknown. a stylistic chameleon and an ultra talented jack-of-all-trades, he is hard to pinpoint, and even harder to categorize. surfacing at random, he’s been releasing music as leonel castillo and under various aliases – arnold slab, boeing or unknown artista are some of his monikers – on labels as diverse as ilian tape, sushitech, airdrop and his own imprint groovear.

ltd nice price --- in 2006 a young unknown david e sugar rocked up at a greco-roman party armed with two nintendo gameboys and a guitar pedal and blew us all away with the ensuing hour of acid. the night was so legendary that he wrote a song about it for our new york soundclash a few weeks later: *oi new york, this is london, oi new york greco-roman soundsystem* … and, quite by accident, the record label was born. a little black round piece of history accompanied by remixes from skream, hot chip, ragga twins and jesse rose.

for their latest slice of saucer-eyed balearic perfection, leng records has looked to the north east of england for inspiration. lizards is a freshly minted project from newcastle-based twosome lee forster – better known as one third of balearic house combo last waltz, whose impressive releases have appeared on world unknown, futureboogie, endless flight and is it balearic? – and long-time friend james hadfield of nein records’ elizabeth collective.

great debut release and new label from a rubadub shop regular featuring tracks from shop regulars. tip. this first release is made up of 3 tracks from my friends and 1 from myself. there’s no concept here other than putting out music that was otherwise not going to see the light of day. the first track is by bleaker who put out a 12inch on unknown to the unknown last year, the second by miz aka big miz whos been putting out music on dixon avenue basement jams, the third by the burrell connection who has a release on west end communications and a track on a craig knows released compilation and the last track is from myself which got a play on big mizs boiler room set. these tracks were all sent to me around the same time and it felt right to make a place for them on a record. bleaker, miz and the burrell connection have all been making waves in scotland and beyond and these 3 tracks are proof that the attention is warranted. and i dont think my track is too bad either.

our second and final release from billy bruner t spoon out of his obscure oil capital record label. if you dance tonight is almost unknown boogie spin your never gonna find, solid. on the flip say yea is an 80s sweet soul ballad years ahead of the pack, i have a soft spot for this one, damn good end of nighter if its been a good one. strictly 500 no repress.

mindtrip presents mt13, which sees another young argentinan talent - farceb - making his mindtrip debut. farceb is a producer whos been pricking ears over the last couple of years with strong releases on labels such as arts, orioni and circular limited. he now joins pfirters imprint with his superb signals from space ep. exoplanet war sets things in motion and is a stylish, entrancing tune, which, if it wasnt for its intrinsic energy and power - would border on the somniferous. next up is signals from space, a tough, brutal and percussive workout, punctuated by dark, organic synth stabs. this track builds and rolls along in a way dancefloors will love. unknown shadow is a powerful, stripped down merciless lump of peak-time techno which cleverly blends atmosphere and hard hitting percussion. the final track - the superb hyperion, is a 6 minute, deadly exercise in pushing intensity and tension to (and sometimes beyond) commonsensical limits. this is mindtrip music!

aimes brings everything good to this release from sun-kissed synths to chimes lapping around your dancing feet, this sort of post-disco can be found on “pleasure cruise-. on the flip, “acid dreaming” is an electro- futurist vision of the journey beyond consciousness to realms unknown. out on the tugboat edit spin-off star creature.
