a bonafide legend of chicago house and techno, dj skull has done the business since the early days on all manner of labels, and he s still on it now. shoring up at mentha for this no-nonsense four tracker, skull is on especially deep form here as he heads inwards with the subtle shuffle of -accent- and the insistent melodic mantras of -on the double-. the story is no different on the b side, although -rythmic- sports a more sprightly set of drums in amongst the strafing synth lines before -the unknown land- turns out one of the more eerie jack tracks of our time.

after a few months of silence following head honcho marco shuttles sing like a bird (reprise) ep, eerie records is back on duty with a strong and utterly refreshing techno release by talented artist serena butler, an obscure producer digged out of the submerged underworld as it already happened previously on shuttles imprint that got us used to releases by relatively unknown and underrated artists. arpeggiated synth lines layered on booming reverbed kick drums mixed with percussive elements of distorsion and lush pads make for a very playable release that is at the same time dreamy and deep, despite being also very organically open sounding, musical, and in many ways counter-trend and different to the dominating dark droning techno style that is so popular these days.

the second ep, 1987s greenfingers, was their final recorded work and, according to hayward, its possible to hear the group atomising and preparing to go its separate ways within its grooves. the only this heat or camberwell now recording not to have been produced at brixtons cold storage studios, it was recorded as a diy exercise and – unusually for either of the groups – was not pored over laboriously for a great deal of time. the ep also saw the addition of a new member, maria lamburn, primarily on sax, whose element unknown was inspired by her experiences in the nuclear protest camp at greenham common. camberwell, in south london, pops up infrequently in pop culture. perhaps you know it from the camberwell carrot, the heroically sized joint smoked in cult movie withnail & i, or perhaps – if youre attuned to experimental music – you know of camberwell now. the group formed from the ashes of this heat, the art-noise group whose catalog was reissued on modern classics recordings in early 2016.
