eighteen: the year of release, 2018. eighteen: the age at which i first used a synthesizer. in creating eighteen i worked independently in the studio, initially building up tracks with synthesizers and found sounds recorded in my daily comings and goings. after working with the tracks over a period of months, i shared them with a few musicians, who added their own instrumental layers. though working independently, we all shared a similar working process: working in our personal recording spaces, as opposed to larger recording studios.

veteran nyc producer and dfa regular juan maclean hops on the rnt wagon for a rolling ep of drum-machine driven grooves for the reserve sub-imprint. the record starts with the peak-time stomper fine time, building exquisite tension and release through looped and filtered samples, and then moves on to the boogie-infused swing of dont stop for nothing. everybody clap leads off side b with a soulful and string-laden vocal over a bouncing hi-hat-focused house arrangement, and the ep closes out on the dubbier tip with the eponymous panic in fort greene park, a synthy and smooth slow burner. all around beautifully produced and eminently playable, señor maclean has made himself a most welcome addition to the razor-n-tape family with this dynamic ep

the shortest connection between the past and the future leads through the music of boston 168. drawing inspiration from both classic and contemporary approaches to the acid techno sound, early nineties rave culture and the throbbing pulse of the now, sergio pace and vincenzo ferramosca have carved out a niche for themselves which over the past four years has become a musical microcosm of its own. having released a slew of records on such labels as involve, attic, odd even and dustin zahn s enemy, the italian duo now presents its most cohesive musical statement thus far on ellen allien s bpitch. on the three tracks of »drops in heaven«, boston 168 seamlessly mold together lysergic acid lines with elements of nineties ambient techno and a rhythmic groundwork that is as thrilling as it is intricate. »cosmic tribe« translates its idea of universal togetherness into a nerve-wrecking groove punctuated by complex percussion work and a subtly building acid line, while »drops in heaven« uses a booming kick drum as base for an emotionally driven exploration of sonic textures. the psychedelic »straight to light« nods to nineties pioneers like emmanuel top, showcasing ferramosca and pace s talent for creating musical depth by ingeniously bringing together a few select elements to greater effect. these are tracks that relentlessly head towards the unknown final frontier of what techno can sound like in 2018, while not in the least neglecting the rich tradition that they draw from.

“lost tracks vol. 2” contains 4 previously unreleased demos recorded between 1997 and 1999. the duo fused 80’s european new wave/italo disco with 90’s detroit electro acts like le car and dopplereffekt. by utilizing verse-chorus structures, they playfully shook up the loop based hard techno and electro that was popular at the time. their studio set up at the time was a korg ms-20, roland sh-101, tr-606, tr-808, siel dk80, and boss dr-660 drum machine. the songs are direct, spontaneous, seemingly improvised in places. miss kittin sings about falling in love in the new millennium, snuff movies and controlling the unknown trip to death, all in her cheekily derisive french accent. all songs have been transferred from the original dat tapes by the band and remastered for vinyl by george horn at fantasy studios. the vinyl comes housed in a glossy jacket featuring a black and white photo of the duo taken in 1996. each lp includes a postcard with liner notes from miss kittin and the hacker designed by eloise leigh. as miss kittin says of these demos, “we were naive, innocent, adventurous and we didn’t expect anything in return”

chris weeks has been building up the kingbastard catalogue for a long time now, generally taking a self-reliant approach in the underground electronica scene where cd-r releases reign supreme. hes been a key figure on ambidextrous since the label launched back in 2008, and now he s committed to wax with a range of crunched up leftfield sonics for the machine-loving crowd. anxiety is a melodic cut with a house-minded structure, but theres a lot of production acrobatics and compositional swerves taking place within this framework. scatterbrain is more overtly out there, tapping up the kind of heavily processed sounds that producers like paradroid have championed in the past. data loss strike a heavy blow somewhere between dubstep and electro, and data ctrl ups the tempo for a rabble-rousing exercise in mind-bending machine music

with its sixth release new york trax continues the mission of highlighting the jewels of the new york underground. liquid asset is a philadelphia-born brooklyn-based hardware virtuoso who has made a name for herself by virtue of appearances on labels such as e-saggila s summer isle brooklyn s own primitive languages jacktone and acid etch where she has recently delivered a furious 7- split with isabella. liquid asset built her own 808 and 303 clones by hand. the modified 303 is particularly audible in the opening track of the record -ephemeral nights- where she did not waste time on an intro and went straight to creating a sonic pandemonium by blending an airhorn sound with frenzy acid basslines and a hardcore-leaning 909 kick. -contact- is a merciless creature of the night with its relentless dark groove building up throughout this composition cannot easily be classified as a representation of any particular genre. -controlperception- opens the b side. here liquid asset plays with a cheerful acid line over a dreamy landscape often punctured with bleeping sounds. finally in -forgetmenot- two opposite sounding basslines intertwine creating a minimal yet very capturing composition to close this one of a kind record.

the 1997 album from inxs back on 180 gram

as a contrasting follow-up to our first single from rooteo & mahura’s metta album, the second single on made in green records keeps the format intact with entirely different results. deadbeat’s remix on part one was both respectful and subtly transformative, on part two, new york’s upcoming max mcferren, whose busy 2015 included eps on ultimate hits, allergy season, and 1080p, brings us a startling reinterpretation of album closer harmal very much in keeping with the vein of raw, aggressive house coming from brooklyn since that scene’s resurgence. the original version of harmal finishes the album in fine style, blending tablas, celestial electronics, and short melodica phrases that gradually swell with layers of vocal samples and orchestal pads before reaching a climax and slowly dying away in gradually receding layers of ambient electronics. mcferren’s remix leads off with only a bare framework of techno percussion. the entry of a sampled section of melody from the original signals a rapid transition to more abrasive territory, with sheets of metallic noise slashing through the high end, short vocal syllables stuttering, and an insistent bass pulse building up and breaking down with at least one element constantly in motion.

sgol recordings are beyond excited to welcome danvers into our fold, with his debut release omiyage. omiyage translates as ‘gift’ or ‘souvenir’ in japanese, which is exactly how this ep came to life. danvers was gifted all the hardware that was used to create the six tracks on this record, six tracks that have been packaged and gifted to us. the ep takes the listener on a trip inside a musical mind that has the ability to take memories and weave them into a rich, sonic tapestry. it perfectly showcases danvers’ effortless skills in sensitive production and sampling, layering shimmering synths with glistening high-hats and building them into swirling dance-floor rhythms. each track forms a part of a figurative journey taking the wide-eyed listener on a symphonious tour leaving them with an overwhelming feeling of wonderment, whilst lulling them into wistful respite.

the make mistakes gang returns with their second record in the form of remixes of roy england s techno rocker, photon. what you get here is a package of dance floor cuts showcasing the varied styles, and tastes of the crew, making this a versatile record that s gonna find a way to fit in where ever it s needed. on the a side we have a taste of attentat s signature sound: hypnotic, driving minimal techno. a slowly evolving meditation, this stripped down, pulsing jam will ignite the late night dance floor. an irrepressible tinkerer, roy england took the original, funked it up, worked it out, and streamlined it for peak time. in his remix, roy crafted a consummate party jam, steady, pumping, and full of life. with his remix, time for trees takes you on a psychedelic, housey frolic through the woods. what we have here is a slow building, mind-bending groove, wrapped up in cascading waterfalls of sound. the make mistakes label has built a diverse sound around a cohesive aesthetic. with the photon remixes, they continue that tradition, with style and depth, fine-tuned for dance floor lovers.
