edmondson first came to my attention with his lobster theramin distributed release, flamingo tripper, on his own label lissoms. or so i thought. turns out he was actually a guy who used to serve me in one of my favourite pubs in newcastle. back in those days he was a dub step / drum and bass kid, and as per the trend with all of those guys, hes now showing the house heads how its done, with a much keener feel for sound design, groove and a better ear for a sample than 90% of us lazy people who cut our teeth on a 4/4 beat. edmondson (or sean as i did know him and how i know him once again) is really one of the most exciting producers out there right now for me, and i couldnt be happier that weve reconnected and hes kindly allowed me me me to present some of his amazing music. we have love is an instant classic, and psg is a work of pure emotive art. to remix we have love, ive enlisted dauwd (fresh from his amazing album on technicolour). sean suggested him, and i jumped on the suggestion as he was one of the first people i met when i moved to berlin 4 years ago, and ive been trying to figure out a way of working with him since. he takes a we have love down a kind of more delicate and steppy route. its very pretty, but also really makes you want to dance. to remix psg i asked asok. again, i thought i first met asok about 7 or 8 years ago, when he came and played for a party i used to throw in newcastle. after becoming good friends over the years, we got chatting and it turned out that we were both in magaluf in 1998, and may have actually been involved in the same street brawl. thats not something either of us are proud of, but its definitely food for thought. i’m biased, but i think his remix is my favourite thing he’s ever done, and i love everything he’s touched musically to date, so thats probably an even bigger endorsement than it first seems. his version is big.

a new year means new musical horizons here at the bordello. curses formed his sound in the distortion and sweat of back alley dive bar bars amidst the crash of guitars and the audible gulp of beer. hints of disco and wave balance this rougher edge, smoothing down those creased lines for a style that adheres to no boundaries. -pedal to the metal and don t look back- is a perfect introduction to curses multifaceted sound. beats orbit burbling bass and brash strings in a work of dreamy hypnotics. -knife in teeth- comes from a similarly shadowy lair. dark bars are further inked by industrial percussion in a track born on the factory floor to strict ebm parents. terr takes on -pedal to the metal and don t look back- and does the original proud. bass rumbles to the tune of a guttering engine before lighter notes take hold. murky currents are cleared by bright synth blasts in this uplifting remake. the bird of paradise closes the ep with his psychedelic take on -knife in teeth.- drums take on a more sinister tone as tribal rhythms give rise to jungle imagery and the immediate threat of what might lurk behind those supposedly innocent sounds.

nigeria’s kingsley bucknor’s ‘just u and me’ lp gets the long-awaited reissue treatment from melbourne’s left ear records. after cutting his teeth playing with fela in the 70’s and releasing two afrobeat lp’s kingsley travelled the globe before finding himself in london, it’s here that he laid down 6 distinctive electro-funk tunes inspired by african rhythms and music he’d heard through his travels in the states and in europe. originally issued on kinglsley’s own kab records in ’85 and according to kingsley the release was well received at the time, but due to constraints of international marketing the record remained mostly unknown outside of his homeland. fast-forward to 2017 and the stage is set for a new global audience to appreciate the distinct sound of kb.

per martinsen aka mental overdrive is one of norwegian dance musics founding fathers. alongside friends such as bjorn torske, biosphere, rune lindbaek and dj strangefruit, martinsen was integral in laying the foundations of norways now blossoming dance music scene during the late 1980s and early 90s. as a producer, he cut his teeth making house, techno and hardcore for belgian imprints ssr and r&s records at the turn of the 90s. he was a regular at the r&s studio in ghent, programming and mixing for other artists including joey beltram. since then, per has continued to produce and release quality electronic music, both under his mental overdrive alias (see releases on full pupp, smalltown supersound, rett i fletta and his own love od communications imprint), and as part of outfits such as frost (alongside his other half, aggie peterson) and illumination/ chilluminati. per is featured heavily in ben davis and pete jenkinsons documentary film chronicling the rise of norwegian dance music, ‘northern disco lights.

new york s p. leone is back with the second release on his newly launched e-missions imprint featuring work them records founder spencer parker on remix duties. born and raised in brooklyn, where he discovered the legendary storm rave parties run by frankie bones and adam x, p. leone cut his teeth djing in the lower east side of manhattan before making techno himself. before long the producer dropped his first two releases on work them records, joining a roster spanning radio slave, spencer parker, young male, anetha and physical therapy. e-missions was then launched in early 2017, acting as a platform for co-founders p. leone and caiazzo with more exciting artists soon to be announced. discipline signals is dark and robust from start to finish, with functions of discipline 1 inaugurating the package with resonating kicks, trippy elements and industrial synths. functions of discipline 2 follows a similar aesthetic but heads into a deeper direction with its cavernous atmospherics and glitch inspired effects, making way for laced with its sinister drones and tantalising melodies. spencer parker then remixes laced , concluding matters with rugged drums, energetic hi-hats and a rumbling low-end.

nice price deal !!! firmly believing against starting a label just for the sake of having a label, cubera labelhead kyle geiger waited to have a specific vision and concept for it before doing so. after almost two years of creating, refining, and revisiting projects for cubera, kyle gei- ger (drumcode, perc trax, droid, & mb elektronics) has carefully crafted a series of productions that carry the melodic presence of the deeper techno sound, while still maintaining the teeth needed for peak hours of the night.

all of the tracks were created using a limited amount instruments, with a deliberate crossover of old synthesizers like a farsa organ or sequential circuits s pro-one and 90s technology like the roland jd-800. it is curious that lawrence says all his synths are half-broken, since the sounds he extracts from them are absolutely healing.

ofo the rock company (originally known as ofo the back company) were nigeria’s first acid-rock band. blending hendrix and deep purple with shamanism and a pro-black philosophy, they cut their teeth at fela kuti’s afrika shrine, developing a fearsome live reputation that intimidated every other band in lagos. no one wanted to follow the guys from ofo, not even fela himself.

the band scarletts fall is a duo formed in 2014 by ruth childs (british-american performance artist and singer based in geneva) and stephane vecchione (swiss performance artist and musician based in lausanne). they define themselves as dirty-girlie-kitchen-pop mixing catchy melodies and repetitive looping with fragile vocals and provocative texts. out of their playfully ironic and poetic universe you can ear shades of can, broadcast and young marble giants.

the latest outing on will & ink is a remix ep that finds parisian producers bambounou and simo cell team up for four reworked versions of yaleesa halls woodall lp. both artists are known for their releases on 50 weapons, livity sound and wisdom teeth. right here, on will & ink, two solo outings with another two collaborated remixes on the b-side showcase their dubbed out, stripped back and paranoid dark parisian trademark sound. their very specific sound sounds like little else and is a solid match with yaleesa hall and the amsterdam imprint as this ep proves.

after over a year spent in a slight creative slump in a crumbling terraced house in tottenham, jam baxter rang his label boss while heavily intoxicated to request they fly him to bangkok forthwith, to rejoin forces with ‘...so we ate them whole’ producer and engineer, chemo. after an initial period of understandable hesitancy, the flights were booked and baxter found himself suddenly regurgitated from the belly of a jet airliner into the magical and surreal surroundings of ‘mansion 38’.
the album features dirty dike, dabbla, lee scott & trellion. included in the vinyl package is a large full colour 8 page booklet with photos and jam baxter’s ‘morning rejuvenation elixir’ recipe.

mihai popoviciu has carved out a reputation for being one of the most innovative producers of electronic music active in europe today. the man from romania has established himself both as a highly respected producer releasing on labels such as highgrade, international gigolo and dessous and as a killer dj performing all over the world. fiction is his 4th release on poker flat recordings, and delivers four distinct flavours to sink your teeth into. i should is a slinky groover, with a slippery, evolving bassline, tight, funky percussion and a sultry female vocal. working just as effectively early in a set as a peak time moment, its bound to get rinsed in the coming months. twisted is a little harder - a straighter beat signals a more heads down approach, and the bassline is sure to trigger some dancefloor scenes wherever it gets played. next up is title track fiction which perhaps makes a reference to mihai’s background, with fragments of eastern european melodies woven into the beautiful synth work, all tied together over a spacey yet driving rhythm track. last but by no means least is interconnected - a straight up deep bomb with echoes of classic chicago deep and acidic house in its warm and sensual vibe.

long awaited repress of this amazing masterpiece as very limited white vinyl edition. what happens when scales and patterns of contradicting emotional imprints combine? when light and darkness, bitter and sweet, frost and blaze collide? those are the questions that johannes heil chooses to address on his upcoming album, opening up a vast grey-scaled area for the listener to traverse with techno as a blindfold. ‘black light’ sees the german techno mainstay return to the album format for an intimate ten track odyssey of close-curtained introspection. heil chooses the words of fellow futurist nikola tesla to set the stage of the black light story >black is the true face of light, only we do not see this<. track names are dropped in favor of a chronology of scenes, better adapted to the seemingly polar opposition of the forces that the figure and cocoon regular conjures throughout the album. everything that we perceive is processed and set into relation with past memories, digested emotions and iron-branded impressions. battling the current, johannes heil chooses to challenge certitudes by forcing us out of our comfort zones into the absence of light. if the pictures painted on >black light< are dark, they are also far from monochromatic. the machine-driven sonic prism acts both as the heavy cloud and the burst of light that shoots through to guide us. its the aggressor and the victim, the clenched teeth and the jubilant, the paranoia and the sanity of the mind. its pure heads-down driving techno with volumes of grandiose. provoking our senses, extending his art onto our personal canvases, the exile boss gives the listener the freedom to interpret the emotional context of each piece, to write the scripts of the individual scenes. the impression that >black light< leaves upon first listen testifies that 20 years down the road, johannes heil shows no sign of slowing down.

zum fünfjährigen jubiläum legt das britische label invada eine special edition des soundtracks auf. musikalisch gleicher inhalt, aber die verpackung ist völlig neu: regisseur nicolas winding refn und komponist cliff martinez haben neue liner notes verfasst. die komplett überarbeitete grafik stammt von dem künstler john bergin. das vinyl selbst ist zur hälfte transparent, zur hälfte pink. diese edition gibt es nur bis zum jahresende. sie ist zeitlich begrenzt und damit sehr limitiert. danach wird wieder die ursprüngliche version aufgelegt. -drive- gehört zu den populärsten scores der letzten jahre. die mischung aus elektronischer pop-musik (unter der leitung/produktion der chromatics) und dem elektronischem soundtrack (von cliff martinez, ex-red hot chilli pepeprs) geht wunderbar auf und verbindet sich treffsicher mit den suggestiven bildern des films.

hotflush are proud to introduce an exciting young artist, pyur, along with her singular debut lp epoch sinus. despite her relative newness, pyur meets the world with fully formed and unique signatures in both visual and sonic work, revealing a deep artistry that transcends medium. growing up in munich, in and amongst the same fecund scene that spawned artists like the zenker brothers and skee mask, pyur cut her teeth from a young age as a guitarist and singer before becoming spellbound by the electronic world’s endless scope for sound design. endowed with innately strong synaesthesia and reared in a shamanic household, she tells how music “played the biggest role in my growth. it alone had the purpose to help me dissolve boundaries, discover the beauty of life’s mechanisms, create freely. it talked. soon i felt like the music was making me, not the other way round.” epoch sinus is a seamless and heartfelt whole, a life-like being unto itself, describing the disintegration of barriers between the self and the all. here pyur offers an intimate and personal statement, combining knowledge of universal harmony with electronic music. she states: “i m mainly influenced by my inner visions and nature itself, yet also a lot from club culture, which is undoubtedly an important space of connection and freedom for so many people”. the record dances playfully between supposedly incompatible qualities: moments of brutality turn to softness, new life embraces decomposition, while explosive rhythmic and melodic structures are tempered with gentle and subtle percussion.

this monster 1976 lp from nassau s munnings brothers aka beginning of the end is a stone cold classic. fact. well deserving of a place in any record collection! this, their second lp (with 1971s infamous funky nassau preceding it) features the brothers original, fresh sound a mixture of tough funk rhythms, bahamian soul and flourishes of jazz and rock is an extremely well executed and produced body of work. not surprising considering the band were one of the bahamas foremost musical outfits. the brothers musical backgrounds could not have been any more fitting, they cut their teeth playing regularly alongside the likes of nat king cole and count basie at their fathers well known nightclub the cat and the fiddle, what we get on this lp however is not jazz, but lean, melodic soul music! original copies of this seminal lp can change hands for 100 s on the used/second hand market and is a solid constant at the tops of the wants lists of record aficionados. the lp has been illegally reissued numerous times without any care or attention being taken to retain or respect the quality of the amazing music contained within. not so on this occasion, this is a fully legit, sanctioned reissue done in conjunction and with the assistance of miami s tk disco empire. now is the perfect time to revisit the deep, soulful sounds of the munnings brothers endeavours, a truly sublime collection of songs, drenched in sunshine, masterfully produced and performed with pure vitality. a truly classic album. sounding as fresh as it did almost 40 years ago. jump in the water!
