tippa lee’s new album cultural ambassador will be released on stones throw, may 20, 2016. available now is the dub version of the album, dub them with reality, mixed by producer tom chasteen (dub club, natural numbers), who has reconfigured the tracks live on the mixing board with echo, reverb and various arcane electronics. the lp covers, in two variations, were screen printed in gold and black by hit & run, with artwork by ellen g. tippa lee was born and raised in kingston, jamaica. he started performing on his fathers sound system as a child, standing up on a beer bottle box to reach the mic. he made his first recordings at king tubby’s studio at the age of 12. eventually he teamed up with rappa robert and as a duo had a number of hits including “no trouble we”, an anthemic statement against police harassment, which was a number one jamaican hit in 1988 and is still played often on jamaican radio. in more recent years he has been based in the us, performing live and releasing his own underground cds.

james barnsley makes a return to his vessel records imprint with two rhythmic numbers joined by laura jones and nightdrivers on remix duties. entering its fourth release, vessel records has seen a healthy launch with dj honesty, dj w!ld and label founder james barnsley kick-starting the discography. cutting his teeth at basics, where he spun records alongside the likes of chez damier, delano smith and josh wink, barnsley has long since built a reputation as a respectable name within the dj booth but it s his appearances on get physical, murmur and overall music that have placed him on the map as a reputable producer.

new york haunted have invited some of our own favorite artists to explore the boundaries of techno as a form of communication. straight from detroit, the legendary terrence dixon represents the minimalist funk like no other in his contribution star dust. straightforward dance floor action with a truly hypnotic vibe. former yellow swan, pete swanson comes from a noise background and has been adding monolithic rhythms for some years now, his dirty work blurs these lines and shifts between harsh noise and distorted machine rhythms. cryptic techno philosopher jamal moss, aka hieroglyphic being drops an exercise in sun ra worship called speaking in tongues and label boss drvg cvltvre rounds of the ep with a combination of shortwave radio transmissions and walls of gutwrenching bass drums. often imitated, never duplicated. these are the unique voices of a techno generation.

cadenza music opens up its 2016 account with the debut single from swiss producers, rare movement feat. disco channel. cutting their teeth on the dj circuit for many years, and playing alongside such esteemed jocks as seth troxler, ricardo villalobos (who mastered the audio on these tracks), jamie jones and luciano (who ultimately signed this single to cadenza), the guys have crafted a pair of tracks that sit right in the dj sets of the aforementioned company. rare 007 combines tension building synths and a wandering bassline, wrapped up tight in solid drum groove, its hypnotizing tones carving out a most useful club tool. on the flip side, rare 011 digs deeper, with cinematic string sweeps over the sparse and bass heavy kick drum. flashes of vocal refrains and micro percussion fly in and out of the arrangement as the melodic elements give this one a real sense of drama as the track blossoms into life. a very accomplished debut from the guys will no doubt provide a real dancefloor moment in the right setting, and no surprise that villalobos gave these tracks the audio master that they deserve.

french producer juliano delivers the next ep, entitled * this must be...*, on his own imprint * that place records*. fourth in line on the label, following on from releases from visitors for reworks, mzkbx (aka sacha mambo) and love comedy, the now berlin-based artist gifts his very first ep to the collection. as a dj, juliano has spent the last 13 years honing his craft - first cutting his teeth holding down a residency at l ambassade, and then going on to play all over france and throughout europe. over a decade of digging and spinning has led juliano to develop a refined palette and a knack for finding tunes that make the dance floor bounce. strongly influenced by us house, * panaugust* is a real dance floor killer with its never ending synth. the more emotional * anthem for a friend* is a real tribute, drawing inspiration from chicago and detroit such as the real mess with its special rhythm & blues vibe. finally, cupid mess brings a touch of japanese mood, evoking images of an early-morning rising sun thanks to the classic juno6 sound. julianos ethos is that music should stay fun - preferring to keep things simple, but always real. watch out for this one.

who better to inaugurate your label than andreas gehm? simple, no-one. glasgow’s schrodinger’s cat is sinking claws and teeth into vinyl with five tracks of blistering tb303 goodness from the cologne man. mr gehm is in fine form as he serves up a quintet of very different cuts. from the warbling wonderment of -blind eyes- to squawking darkness of -jak the floor-, this ep shows how talented this machine musician is. -can you hear me girl- is jilted lover, stalker house, beady eyes peering into misted windows material. the elec pt 1 hood is donned for the dirtiest track of the 12inch. grimy claps are further polluted by bending acid lines in a work overflowing with violence. out of the leftfield comes the finale. -systems go- throbs with rumbling rhythms, a bleeped melody keeping time as drum machines overheat and circuitry melts. mean as ever from andreas gehm. expect tears.

white asega co-­owner jack dixon wrote new curtains after a friend who was coming wildly off the rails told him he was a good producer but his tunes were boring. the original version was really sparse and about 300bpm. when jack moved to new york the parts got lost, so he remade the track a dozen times. this was the version we all liked best, although jack never wants to hear it again in his life. it sounds tough and tropical. our friend troy gunner remixed it, and turned it into something so loud and slamming it will knock your teeth out. after telling jack to stop making boring music, mark kodiak spent two horrendous years working with jamie kodiak on a song they ve called taargus. it nearly destroyed their friendship forever but we think it was worth it. it has brutal weapon sounds, nasty snares and an incessant “yo” that has been described as “annoying and unnecessary”. the artist tom pounder has created a blinding video for it that contains brand new colours. french born bass genius bambounou stepped up to remix the track, taming the wild stems into a hypnotic early­morning house stepper. it took us approximately 2000 exhausting facebook group chats, four cross­atlantic flights and one divorce to get to this point. we hope you will enjoy this record for the rest of your lives. rip ken tulley.

you might have heard of happa by now. hes the leeds native who first burst onto the electronic scene in 2013 with his blistering 12inch-single beat of the drum/ bring it back, the wildly precocious teenager (also known as samir alikhanizadeh) who won instant fans in the likes of mary anne hobbs, loefah and even four tet, the one who scorched a trail with his dark, bass-heavy sledgehammer house, which sounds quite unlike anything else out there right now.

classic arthur russell 7 inch from the depths of west ends vaults. timely remastered from the original tapes. this is a different version to the honest jons 12 inch released in 2003 with more moog bleeps and a slower tempo and has never been commercially available on vinyl (track run time 2:45). it also includes the uptempo freakout rare as hens teeth instrumental mix. original 7 inches going for up to £200 on discogs and only 12 people in the world showing they own a copy. this release never got passed promo stage at west end in 1980.

in 1996 paul birken released the classic and now rare as hens teeth surfin superior double 12inch on woody mcbrides communique label. this was to be a revered and respected record that influenced many and is still talked about and played today. now, some 19 years later he follows it up with part 2. nobody works as hard at getting human sounding chattering from their machines as birken and here he treats us to 8 massive cuts of grinding techno that are as humorous as they are danceable.

with a well nourished upbringing in the belfast house and techno scene, chris hanna has proved himself as an artist that knows what works in a club. with a plethora of upfront underground releases on made fresh daily and extended play already under his belt, chris is set to follow the wave of artists who have cut their teeth on ireland’s vibrant underground circuit to take on the world’s electronic scene.

lobster theremin present their first label album, a double lp from chicago resident and elusive young talent, chicago jim. having cut his teeth on a life growing up in the windy city, jim s reverent ability to spin synthopian tales of old-school chicago and the birth of house music are a genuine reflection of a talent rarely seen at the helm of records in the post-00 s. label head jimmy asquith discovered the album online, originally released through chicago tape imprint pretty all right, and after streaming one track said tape was swiftly purchased and absorbed.
