for her first single, the sublime title loverboy comes out as a big urban spleen, released in a space made of asphalt and artificial paradises. groups like hooverphonic or even portishead play around this throbbing softness that is loverboy, splashing about in the electronic lounge of the 90s. the opener, alien lady features a flute-driven solo backed up by a funky guitar riff that then transitions into a tropical beat and tanja narrating the story of feeling a stranger in a big city, not understanding the social codes and clues ‘i don t speak the language in the way that you know’ while worth to you is a dreamy, glitched-out hypnotic track which maintains an edge of mysterious sexuality and her signature sense of intimate detachment. if the atmosphere coming out of lomboy’s work can be sometimes felt as prude and even shy, it certainly does not intend to hide with embarrassment the aphrodisiac scent that permeates it. on the contrary, this modesty perceived in the interpretation and in the production sensually envelops the different compositions, and imparts to this guilty pleasure the feeling of a stolen kiss. warped caress brings us to vertiginous heights and takes us into abyssal depths throughout the five tracks. this suggests at times a diegetic representation of this erotic world seen through the insolent prose and at other times a mimetic representation where each instrument plays an important part in every story told.

blue hawaii is the songwriting, production, and dj project of raphaelle ‘ra’ standell and alexander ‘agor’ kerby. after some four years apart, the duo rekindled their creative flame in 2016 and begun writing music about an intimate relationship ra was experiencing mostly over instant messaging, sparking ideas about the meaning of closeness in our highly connected world. tenderness is a concept album which brings forth the challenges of handling relationships online. maintaining closeness over distance and a need for more tenderness between each other - both in real and virtual life - are important themes in the album s progression. the album draws upon influence from 90 s dance tracks and deep disco cuts, often mixed with ra’s acoustic guitar playing. it unfolds like a play and each song being supported by shorter interlude pieces: skits, phone calls, acoustic demos, real life samples and quiet left-turns.

ali kuru is one of those rare producers whose music sounds like nothing else around. the istanbul-based artist has spent the best part of a decade honing his trademark style – a fragrant and intoxicating aural brew that combines a myriad of influences with atmospheric field recordings and snaking, mind-altering middle eastern instrumentation – via releases for the likes of luxa flex, kalisah, sound architecture and, most recently, leng.

despite a discography that stretches right back to the late noughties, little is known about turkish producer ali kuru. perhaps he’s publicity shy, or simply wants to let his music do the talking, either way, the music he makes is magical, and undoubtedly worthy of wider acclaim.

by way of zagreb, croatia meet strahinja arbutina. his music is a mixture of noise, techno and industrial. add a 303 with an occasional memphis rap sample and you can start to describe his music. its not that simple, he also doesn’t shy away from hardcore and the absurd. whether pushing boundaries in his mixes or tape releases, you can be sure strahinja is going to be releasing quality music for years to come. highly recommended!
