last year, an enigmatic name seemed to appear out of thin-air. sam weston was apparently a fresh upstart in the australian house-scene releasing a dusty collection of late-night/early-morning jams aptly titled shiraz voyager. with this rose-tinted house release in hand, weston arrived on the scene and people took notice. the tape sold out within weeks. thing was, sam weston was not a fresh-face at all. he was here all along, although more commonly known as one half of influential sydney techno duo – alba. lorded for their brand of live-fire robotic grooves, alba became trailblazers in a town more miami than berlin, where brooding and rolling hypnosis weren’t often preferred to fist pumping “bangers”. wanting to flex his lovin’ spoonful of hypnotic lo-flung house, weston decided to release a handful of edits on his soundcloud. immediate attention was conjured and sam weston released the aforementioned shiraz voyager ep to a pretty amazing response. almost overnight, australia had a new hero in weston’s warm compositions that summon memories of sunny days and happier times.

nice price deal !!! gioele giacopelli, also known under the jwl moniker, is an italian producer and dj who had his music released by many international record labels such as plus plus, soul shift music, sexonwax and fortezza records. the uk based label pathway traxx released his disco cuts ep on vinyl, which held the number 1 spot in multiple charts and its track called again n again was supported by famous artists such as ben ufo. since 2016, jwl is signed under soundscapes records/escape series, where he collaborates with tuscan musician and producer inno (giovanni ferretti). giovanni ferretti participated as a multi-instrumentalist with a band called sycamore age on the album of the same name, released on santeria/audioglobe records in march 2012. the album was distributed by rough trade in german speaking countries, france and belenux, where it has been selling well. in december 2013, fortezza records released hard dreamers ep which included tracks by giovanni ferretti and jwl. at that time, jwl was involved in various multimedia and electroacoustic projects within and outside of his musical studies. soon, inno and jwl will release a 4-track ep escape series 003 on vinyl.

rotterdam based 25 places are back on dirt crew with a bang! since their love more release in 2015 the boys have been hard at work and have just released an ep for chez damier on his prescription records sub label balance. the bounce begins with party in the hills hosting a huge kick, loopy rhodes, squelching bass, ragga flavoured vocal and squeaky lead, its straight up good times right from the get go. an infectious groove on this one! closing title song heads into deep soaring territory, its forward house beat and pulsing synth lead intertwine with loose tropical percussion and a rhapsodic horn hook. on the flip we have laurence guy who does not really need an introduction anymore, the man has been all over the place since this years releases on cin cin, outplay and the imminent church where he dropped two big eps bamboo and kojak. here he takes on the soulful deep chicago house of 25 places and turns it into a 90s breakbeat acid galore of ecstasy tingled uk house. 25 places wrap up the rave session with backyard stories, a raw and bouncing, bass face inducing jam. uplifting and dirty in one stroke, its thumping kick and feverous melodies make it impossible not to move.

ltd 20216 repress ! italian producers steve murphy and dj octopus are regular collaborators, and earlier this year released an excellent split ep on chiwax. here, they return to the much adored german imprint with a proper collaborative four-tracker. theres much to admire, from the rush-inducing bounce of opener track 1 and mr lee-ish cheekiness of track 2 (check the 89 style riff, snappy drum machine groove and cut-up vocal samples), to the impeccable depth and sun-drenched warmth of the decidedly wide-eyed track 3. arguably best of all, though, is track 4, which reimagines sir james 1990 strictly rhythm classic special as an immersive chicago deep house jam.

‘consistency’, the second lp from the berlin-based techno artist. the 11 track release follows 2014’s ‘en route’ and will be released on heiko laux’s label kanzleramt, a label with which kajioka has worked with closely for over a decade. consistency lp bears all the marks of a kajioka release: a collection of deep, driving, groove-laden and synth-focused cuts. heady grooves which leave little question why ray kajioka is held in such high regard among techno veterans, called upon regularly for remix honours by the the likes of heiko laux, joel mull, pan-pot, elbee bad, alexander kowalski and marc romboy, to name but a few. kajioka’s reputation for faultless production remains consistent on this, his sophomore lp. the full, extended physical release of consistency contains 3 vinyl disks: 2 x 12” lp disks plus a free, bonus 12”.

a legend to those who know, todd sines makes his first appearance on circus company in a fit of sharp-edged, wildly expressive house music that harks back to the unhinged early days of the label. sines has a career that stretches back to the early 90s, having released lauded records under the .xtrak moniker on peacefrog and 7th city amongst other legendary labels.

little beat different issues is a new series focused on reissuing music from eastern european regions previously unavailable on western markets. the first release is a compilation by project orm, the moniker of czech producer team petr and pavel orm. originally formed as a disco group in the late 1970’s, pioneers of electronic dance music in former czechoslovakia, petr and pavel quickly rose to fame as the country’s eminent pop producers. working with the then icons of the communist czechoslovak scene such as karel gott and josef laufer, they stand behind countless hits from that era. however, not many knew that the duo also released their own records, whose sound and artistic direction was different to their mainstream pop productions. this compilation cherry-picks the tracks from 4 different albums released between 1979 and 1984.

sunandbass recordings returns with the four track fade away ep from arpxp, brilliantly showcasing the producer s ability to turn his hand to a wide range of different styles of drum & bass. well known and recognised for both the quality and diversity of his work, arpxp has released with iconic labels such as metalheadz, critical and of course sunandbass recordings, but now his fade away ep gives him a platform to really showcase what his work stands for, and where he is musically at the moment. with the smooth, melancholic vibes of fade away alongside mc fava, and the shoe-gazing vibes of ˜fifth step is goodbye , arpxp shows his ability to build a solid groove, with well sculpted sounds all interwoven together to form strong memorable tracks.

after three years and ten eps, amsterdam s will & ink label offers up its first full length from label favorite yaleesa hall and is called woodall. it explores texture, space and sound design in fascinating ways. since 2014 yaleesa hall has released four eps on the label and has become known for breakbeat laced stripped-down techno. this debut album finds the producer indulging a less dance floor focussed version of his sound, and one that is better suited to the full length format. explaining that his tracks most often start as -sound structures and experiments- that then get reworked for the club, here they stay closer to their original forms. woodall is sound sculpture that is electronic and synthetic but also made of real world sounds that are all truly absorbing. comes in gatefold sleeve.

apollo introduce sieren, aka matthias frick. a software engineer at ableton by day, sierens love for uk influenced bass music and field recording and experimental soundscaping has resulted in this masterly ep of atmospheric street-rave soul. this is his first release since his debut lp transients of light, released earlier this year on christian lofflers ki records. fittingly, fellow apollo cohort synkro was instrumental in the curation of the static polymorphism ep hand picking the tracks, as well as road testing them to memorable effect on berghains hallowed system no less.neglection opens the release, with billowing widescreen pads, a ghostly 2-step drum figure and pulsing subs,rebase ratchets up the intensity, with sinister bass drones punctuated by strafing perc and hissing ambiance while relicts angelic yet melancholic atmosphere pulls the listener in with heart-aching synth washes and whispered female vocals. closer how to pairs mechanistic slo-mo funk with caustic 808 kicks, muttered vox and juddering bass stabs. this is richly textured and intricately programmed post-bass music that is sure to satisfy fans of burial, dbridge, akkord with its soulful sincerity and warmth.

the mythical transdance from uk duo night moves is given a much needed official repress by domestica records and the barcelona label have spared no expense. a limited pressing of 400 10-s come housed in hand screen printed sleeves accompanied by a leaflet with complete biography of the band. despite the paucity of night moves discography, it s clear the duo of michael guihen and john davis have had an everlasting effect on the canon of synth music with their much admired debut. transdance was originally released as a limited 12- white label in 1981, finding favour on the dance floors of europe and new york city yet never really gained the wider exposure it richly deserved. original copies of the gc1 pressing of transdance still command slightly ridiculous prices on discogs so kudos to domestica for this rather special presentation which features a previously unreleased demo cut -life up- on the flip.

nascent london label ex-local announces its arrival with a new 5-track ep from south london talent kxngs. with an extensive back catalogue that includes a release on the la collective soulection s imprint (as kings in 2012) - as well as self-released album earlys & eps that can all be found on his bandcamp page the 25-year-old brixton resident has been winning admirers on his own terms whilst studying sound arts at the university of the arts london which offered him an escape from a year living homeless on the citys streets.

having thus far released eps for aficionado and music for dreams, a vision of panorama return to their regular haunt mellophonia to expand on the promise of their shorter works to go deep into a balearic dream on aquafusion. it s a perfect meditation on serene funk from start to finish, spanning eight tracks of tender musicianship that sit very easy on the ears. the likes of surf blue almost do away with drums entirely in a quest for calm, while barbados and others offer up a more sprightly vision of 80s-flavoured groove, but throughout the mysterious hands behind the record maintain a smooth and steady mood that binds the album together.
