almost 10 years have passed since onra arrived with the charmingly eccentric chinoiseries lp. 32 hip-hop beats formed the sample-based project - dusty chinese vinyl hissing and crackling throughout – resulting in an intriguing and spontaneous mix of the producers interest in exploring a newly-discovered style of music with his love for classic hip-hop production.
using the style of analogue mpc production combined with the somewhat restrictive record sampling of strictly chinese music records, he has been able to be creative over three volumes, an amount of 100 instrumentals, despite the challenge of finding more obviously standout samples in chinese music.
the chinoiseries projects are the type of albums that invites the listener to play it from beginning to end, in order to really enjoy the trip and appreciate the variety of rhythms and textures spread over those 32 short instrumentals. in that way, “pt.3” is no different to its predecessors, but the originality of the samples, the curious harmonies and the odd-drum patterns still makes the album sounds as fresh as the first one.

back down on my knees is a raw house cut combining a pounding bass drum and clever percussion reminiscent of a late 00 s new york sound with washed synths. i m amazed offers an ambient track lead by a simple piano interlaced with a field recording taken on a subway platform in new york. on the other side rubber jam is a tough hardware jam with a floaty arpeggiated synth line. here will be blood rounds the ep out relying on percussion to drive the track with breakbeat and a heavy bassline.

basic soul unit returns with another deadly ep on dolly, further investigating the thin dividing line between techno and broken beats. a-side wallow is a menacing big room stormer with a delicate pad breakdown, with voiski providing an alternate more driving techno version of it with a splendid melodic twist midway through the track. radiate and joyride on the b both have bsus signature rhythmic ideas and fresh energy with radiate even going full-on broken rave! joyride is that upbeat funky techno nugget thats going to sit in your dj bag forever.

in 2017, the finnish jazz scene seems to bubble with talent. one of the most prominent players in this mix is by definition, trumpeter jukka eskola. after over a decade of adventures in different spaces of jazz – from the dance floor burn of the five corners quintet to the raw expressive modes of mikko innanen’s small big band, jimi tenor’s cosmic jazz and his own prime cti styled solo recordings – eskola takes things back to bare basics. and as usual, when it’s done right, it’s the best thing out there.
