encer kincy was giant in chicagos house music revival - part of the second wave of younger djs and producers that took the music of the early 1980s, rubbed it up and dropped it in places like 500 west cermak, medusa’s and the vault. a lot of people who are now superstars of the scene - mark farina, sneak, derrick carter, and dozens of others - were a part of that movement, too. spencer released a number of tracks on relief, planet e, cajual, peace frog - labels representing the classics of that era - and he usually recorded under the name gemini. as a dj, he operated in his own space - i’m sure he could play for a room, and sometimes did, but the unrestrained madness of a spencer kincy dj set had to be heard over several hours to appreciate. he could blend a sleazy disco track into hard acid, downtempo into a punishing armani track, jazz into detroit techno and so on. it wasn’t technically brilliant or tricky, but the selection was exquisite. a number of figures from his era still list him as an influence. his productions, viewed as a whole, are so much like his sets: going softer than many dared to go, and going much harder than just about any dared to go. simple jack tracks! respected by the standards of the industry of the time, and you certainly couldn’t go anywhere in chicago without hearing derrick, sneak, mark, lego, gene, jevon, diz, johnny or the other djs beating them. and so many of them have a timelessness - a little piece of eternity stuck like some bit of wax between the grooves

the latest ep to come from the detroit grand pubahs label detelefunk is dj and producer k alexi shelby with >i can go<. kaay is one of chicagos true heroes and cited by many as a pioneer of the citys sound. this is his unique smooth blend of techno and house, as kaay calls >tecsoul< (which is also the the name of his own label) that attracted the eye of the pubahs with a track titled >i can go< featuring kaays own vocals, and the heavy female breathing.

scott monteith aka deadbeat is back on echocord with an absolutely killer ep. after his split ep with fenin on echocord colour this year, and his earlier ep with pole (d.p.) he is now back on echocord with his vampire ep. deadbeat is one scott monteith, a long time montrealer and recent berlin ex pat who has been releasing his own special blend of dub laden, minimal electronics since 2000, for labels such as cynosure, musique risquée, scape and spectral to name but a few. this continues in the same vain. dub is the key here and it is used with such class and insight. the flip sees a more twisted track that shows a slightly more edgy side.

salvatore freda makes a welcome return to freerange, turning in two rock solid club tracks that straddle house and techno, with his own individual approach stamped all over them. a long running resident at d club, one of switzerlands finest clubs, salvatore freda is an experienced dj as well as accomplished producer whose previous track on freerange, >western spaghetti<, caught the ears of many a big name dj.

alex o. smith aka omar-s does it again, mixing up the rough with the smooth in his wonderfully titled >plesetsk cosmodrome ep< (named after the russian space port of the same name). the first two tracks >kosmos 1402< and >plesetsk cosmodrome< have a old larry heard kind of feel to them, you should check the title track which has one of the most infectious basslines i have heard in a while. the drum machine lead closing track >skynet 2b< is omar s at his rawest. classic fxhe vibes, miss this one at your peril.

oh my god! this is another impressive release on the fast growing analogmode label. a.paul is on a roll with his string of releases in 2009 on labels like planet rhythm, kombination research and naked lunch to name only a few. this time he collaberates with one of the biggest in the industry: the advent! this tune is just what to except from these guys. straight froward pumping techno! the second track is by japanese techno warrior riuji takeuchi followed up on the flip by sinisa tamamovic taking it deep. last but not least a switch in styles to the dancefloor magnet tadox. all in all a great diverse techno ep which you just cant afford to miss!

minimal wave: both a genre of underground diy electronic music from north america and europe in the late 1970s and 80s, and the name of the label devoted to unearthing these recordings. the minimal wave tapes is the first official anthology of minimal wave music from this label. most of the songs were originally released on limited edition cassettes or vinyl by the artists themselves, and only a handful of people knew about them. they ve been remastered from their analog source tapes and compiled here by minimal waves veronica vasicka and stones throws peanut butter wolf.

londons bass champion and one half of the infamous night slugs team is l vis 1990. a name synonymous with the whole uk funky / post garage and house movement thats proving to be the most exciting thing in electronic music right now. following releases on mad decent and tres cool, l vis is kicking off his new label (conceived with fellow tastemaker bok bok) alongside this weeks new release from mosca (check that), with two tracks that slew genres and blur all boundaries in their wake. originally released only digitally on dj orgasmic and teki latexs sound pellegrino label, compass and zahonda are now finally available on super loud vinyl. this is a limited edition.

2009 was a great year for these days records, and 2010 promises to be even better. the platform stood out for its innovative yet functional club sound and unique artwork concepts. the new year begins with a new split series under the name universal consciousness, based on the idea of connection between all things, and that all things have been coordinated, and they combine to make up the same universe. the first part is dedicated to two very different takes on spiritual, cosmic space techno. on the a-side argys >sometimes im blind< generates a long and uplifting emotional climax, which features a solo that will forever stay in your heart. the track was recorded at the end of 2008, and despite numerous offers to release the record elsewhere, nothing was finalised and the recording never saw the light of day. soon after the birth of his own label, it naturally fit the platform and seemed a perfect way to start the new year. on the flip side, sheffield born alexander ross, brings forth a cavernous techno piece awash with reverberation and spacial echos that brings a driving yet non the less emotionally captivating moment perfectly in balance with the depth of the a-side.

its been a while since i:cube hasnt deliver some fresh cuts! was he lost in a software??? hes back (a new album is also scheduled) to his early naive, deep and twisted spirit, but with a super tight modern production... falling is a sleazy funk track, a slow burner, which contains all the elements who made i:cube one of the most respected and innovative producers around since more than a decade!! heavy groove, hypno bassline, references to the early disco-dub music. un dimanche sans fin (neverending sunday) was done (as its name says) a sunday night, one shot, at the versatile studio. cube reconnects with his seminal dub-techno love, a track full of space and emotion. i would describe operation hypnosis as sheffield house. a solid beat and some bleeps will bring the dancer into a mental spiral...

the title track, lost in shibuya, is perhaps our favorite track from the album. its a very evocative track, a 7 minute journey that revolves around a killer bassline, that captures the trancey techno vibe that made some of the most glorious moments of nineties techno. on the flip side, we asked one of our favorite producers to deliver a remix. his name is quarion and as part of drumpoet community, he is responsible for some of the best deep house sounds of the past years, and is one of the leaders of the neo deep house movement. quarion blessed us with a tribute to mood ii swing that is his dub infected killer usuki shinrin mix.

the 2nd release of french producer anthony collins on mule electronic. anthony collins have released from get physical, freak n chic, bangbang!, curle and name a few. his biggest track >reeves< was included to the compilation of 10 years anniversary of circoloco@dc10. after the successful of last 12inch >upright bass< inc great foog remix, he came back with two modern deep house stuff. a side, >away from home< is early 90s house sound. its associated with the updated nuyorican soul sound or recent dj sprinkles release. if you like the recent underground us house like underground quality or that kind of release,you will like this song even if its more modern taste than them. bside, >hanging on< is jazzy, tribal minimal house sound. its a modern dj tool.

the waiting is finally over! after all the ups and downs of the past year, we can happily report that joshua eustis now firmly intends to continue telefon tel aviv as a solo project. in order to mark his decision with a bang, thewonderful title track >immolate yourself< is being released as the second single from the current lp. the song has been entrusted to highly acclaimed and diverse remix artists who have skilfully stripped down the epic album track to more club-friendly formats.
the a side is delivered by label-mate thomas muller, whose finely detailed techno soundscapes can now be enjoyed on five bpc 12 inch releases. his >immolate< remix takes a much more direct approach. he reduces the lush arrangement of the original to a powerful basic framework, leaves out the vocals almost entirely, and creates a surprise when the track crumbles into sonic chaos towards the end.
miss fitz aka maayan nidam has had singles released on labels including raum musik and freak n chic, and these have been remixed by renowned artists such as ricardo villalobos. her version of >immolate< also makes a clear break from the album track and serves up her very own brand of abstract, dancefloor-friendly house. once again, all the opulence of the original is thrown overboard, a dry beat is placed at the centre of the arrangement and enriched with sinuous vocals.
ben klock needs no further introduction - he is the epitome of the bleak, hard minimal sound. his album >one< is currently available on ostgut ton, and as a remixer he has earned the highest acclaim for his version of depeche modes >peace<. bens >jack mix< is fittingly titled and lives up to all the expectations of the name. the track is stripped back to a resounding, hammer-like beat framework - minimised for maximum effect.
bpitch legend sascha funke delivers a surprise with another astoundingly reduced remix, at least by his standards. he turns away from the melodic richness of his current album >mango< in favour of repetitive fragments and an extended arc of tension which will surely make his >immolate< remix a massive after-hour hit.

daniel steinberg and front room are like annoyingly sexy couples that you end up in the next hotel room to on a company business trip. except of course daniel steinberg and front room dont actually have sex they just literally make sweet music together. the spiciness continues with the preacherman ep, daniel steinbergs fifth release on front room recordings. punctuated with the exotic and the kind of twists, bumps and energy that only steinberg can provide, preacherman kicks off a cacophony of funk fuelled head nodding to get any party pulsating. “you need love” with its in-your-face vocal, huge beat and sleazy decelerating breakdown has future classic written all over it. the long awaited tiefschwarz remix of “lucky sauce” also sees the light of day here in full effect and breathes a new layer of ‘wow’over a release that is only really just beginning to simmer down from its release in june. wonked out groover who stopped the music rounds proceedings off nicely on an ep that is audio proof that the stroke of his talent only gets more precise and dazzling with every release. daniel steinbergs releases are supported by the likes of ricardo villalobos, luciano, claude vonstroke and richie hawtin to name drop a few. watch this space for daniel steinbergs artist album coming out on front room in 2010

bristol-born and london-based producer rekordah takes charge of lo fi funk records second instalment. as well as running the independent label pollen, rekordah also promotes a series of parties of the same name with efa (which have hosted artists of the caliber of mike slott and slugabed among others), and crafts his own brand of cosmic, dismembered hip hop, in that wonky style everyone is raving about.
