berliners dirk leyers and nomad expressed their hard earned musical freedom in a dogma: the use of a roland tr-808 analog drum machine in every single track. they programmed the machine to lay poly-rhythms over multicultural drum and percussion tracks, fascinated -and sometimes puzzled- by its own characteristically sudden swing and accent changes, and named it: africaine 808 - their third and first female band member. in the first year of their musical joint venture, the three spent quite some time in remixing and editing some of their favourite african and island funk tunes, transforming the old gold into modern dj and dancefloor friendly tunes. the sound of organic grooves mixed with 808-beats and analogue synthesizer basslines became soon a trademark sound, and more and more samples got replaced by live played guitar, bass, organ and percussion. the trio experimented with different tempos and styles ranging from slow cumbia and exotic rumba themes to island-funk and percussive disco, electro and house. in spring 2012 they first took the project to another level, turning their tracks into a full live act at one of the vulkandance nights in berlin. today the project is growing and integrating guest musicians, drummers, percussionists and vocalists - for live performances as well as for recording in the studio. 100% sonic voodoo golf channel every time!

affi is a glasgow based producer, dj and resident at the cult sunday circus, a collective infamous for throwing their long-lasting, day-after-the-night-before affairs. he regularly makes his presence felt at the most credible club nights and parties in and around the labels home town. as with the imprint he breaks ground for, koman has been making music for the last ten years with two previous releases already to his name. drawing inspiration from hawtins de9 - closer to the edit work with regard to the deconstruction of previous productions, the reassembling of intriguing new forms dominates his modus operandi and leads to this latest offering. the champagne breakfast ep puts forward the titular track on the a-side, ably abetted by in love and its dub remix love dub on the flip. an uplifting track which keeps on giving, the new release has already been subjected to test runs in the critical environs of a packed sub club and has proved worthy of the plaudits so far received.

running back veteran mark e returns with a tribute to the uks black country and an ode to the industrial revolution. the images and histories of coal mines, steel mills and iron foundries north and west of birmingham and south and east of wolverhampton lay the foundation of the three track ep (including a work break siren). being a product of his environment, mark e delivers lots of sooty particle house music with a glimpse of sunshine. bostin!

polymath james leyland kirby must surely have one of the most confounding cvs in the business: he spent years taking the piss out of the music industry with anthems rallying against the (vv)mcps, he notoriously fell out with various well known record labels for reasons you ll just have to google, goaded aphex twin with a series of tributes and channelled his love of everything from falco (rock me amadeus), chris de burgh, frankie goes to hollywood and stockport karaoke nights into a stream of increasingly bizzare 7 s back in the early noughties. but at the same time he was responsible for releasing some of the very earliest material from boards of canada (hell interface: 1997), made a ruck of frankly groundbreaking industrial electronic records, brought new beat to the worlds attention and, in 1999, made his first album as the caretaker, a project that would go on to release some of the most loved ambient/ lynchian albums of recent times.

melbournian multi-hyphenate luke brown has his hands in a lot of pots, having dug deep in his dj duo with ricardo ramos, leslie salvador, as well as his ongoing death-disco / dark-synth revisionist twosome, negativ magick. but the past few years have found him exploring more classic, scruffed-up analog house terrain via his latest alias les level, and his six-track debut is purist uncut club gold. bookended by a pair of of mixes of the stellar neo-chicago anthem *house of need*, the rest of the tracks prowl through a host of suave, shuffling, strictly rhythmic variations, from the 3 am skyline seducer *smooth sailing* to the pumping, jazzy jack-groove *working nights*. an expert assemblage by a nuanced craftsman with style to burn.

in the 70s radio stations were a powerful force across the whole of the us, and anyone with a transistor radio had access all kinds of music. live music was another matter altogether, and unless you found yourself in a major city your nights out were limited to what the local talent had to offer. this was especially so with soul and funk acts, as mainstream rock and pop was where the money was. so for small time oklahoma soul bands such as husband and wife charles and barbara burtons groups messengers inc - and later burton inc - times were tough. however, like many purveyors of soul, tough times were no match for those with determination, persistence and a story to tell. many artists scraped enough money together to make a 45 or two on their own label, but the burtons took this to another level – they got themselves organised and released their own full length lps.
