april showers bring may flowers, but this april claude vonstroke brings you the rain break. inspired by two different songs from the 80s - (razes classic break for love and oran juice jones the rain), claude has replayed and re-sung all the music from scratch to make a special cover tune of both tracks changed and combined into a surefire dirtybird classic. to quote vonstroke, i kept singing the break for love bassline over and over again in my head but the vocal that always popped in over the top was from the oran juice jones. i cant explain why that happened but i just thought they went together so well that i ran with it.here comes the b is a much weirder affair. built with massive psychedelic effects, a huge kick and almost no hi-hat pattern, this is late night cavemen music at its best. this big release from cvs will have you wishing for a downpour so you can go walking in the rain.

transhumanism ep is a combination of ethereal and angular sounds, but with many points of reference concatenated between them. starting from the side a, if methodical ear has as its base, a rhythm with an incipit house, but with edgy sounds always in progress, shadow manipulation of mind looks at an utopian techno, together a dense and obsessive hypnotic groove. instead, in the b-side, synapsi sonora-, presents a classical structure, but with kick and snare somewhat in the foreground, with low, evolving, sick and stifling pads in their concept of low-fi timbal. state of induced hibernation is an alien traces in his gait metal percussion and sharp synth, make a song to say the least harsh and unwilling to be defined and confined to specific genres, as in the complex is all this project for ambiwa records.

aus follow up releases from bwana, sei a and fold with the welcome return of shenoda with his chromatic ep. throughout a catalogue thats included 12inches for hypercolour and manmakemusic as well as his exceptional debut labour ep on aus last year he has consistently and capably melded house and techno signified by his burly drum work and long, stirring breakdowns. his chromatic ep packs in three powerful cuts with blame, a track that drives a dense, staggered kick under blood-curdling tension and dramatic synth builds. musical mob then follows up with scuffling drums and a bold, peak-hour synth line before shores closes up with a shimmering sound-build giving way to a dense and full bodied bass pattern.

james barnsley makes a return to his vessel records imprint with two rhythmic numbers joined by laura jones and nightdrivers on remix duties. entering its fourth release, vessel records has seen a healthy launch with dj honesty, dj w!ld and label founder james barnsley kick-starting the discography. cutting his teeth at basics, where he spun records alongside the likes of chez damier, delano smith and josh wink, barnsley has long since built a reputation as a respectable name within the dj booth but it s his appearances on get physical, murmur and overall music that have placed him on the map as a reputable producer.

jäfar make a rapid return to the label and are back to grace the a side of fragil 019, while one half of the duo (elliot sindall) also pairs up with constantin nakov as seura on the flip. black mamba recalls certain aspects of jäfar s previous work on the label: the broken drum line, the subtle vocal samples and the global hypnotic aspect of the music. yet it is also radically different from marzsia. black mamba is a subtle but direct club track, aiming to get the dancers down through its heavy groove. the kick drum and low toms are strongly suggesting leg movement, joining forces with the snares and hats which call upon some serious head nodding.on the b side, white chapel is another broken beat club piece, but this time feels crafted for the afterhours. the groove is lighter and the heady feel is strong, closing the dancer s eyes and inviting them to drift through the music. once again, fragil comes up with original, well produced and highly danceable content, highlighting unsung talents for every versatile dj out there.

after his successful remix of orions gravity johannes volk returns to polytone with his debut ep. two excellent techno tracks are in place and a spaced out ambient piece called it could happen describes the mysterious view from a spacecraft cockpit into the wideness of the universe. on the a-side volk blows the whistle of the ep s title -asteroid riding- with funky chords accompanied by a wide deep bassline, short samples, classic percussions and a cropped stomping kick-drum, that let you ride through the orbit. on the b-side -earthbound- pounds with a broad hollow kick, arpeggiated synths, alerting sounds and a harmonically settled type of string-line that eases the elements diversity like the blue planets gravity. within the tracks that have been built to transport the feel of time and space, johannes volk again pushes himself on the cutting edge of electronic music.

invite’s choice records continues on the path chosen with a 3-track vinyl release which showcases some new and well-established names. hertz collision has the honour of being chosen to be the only artist showcasing a track on the a-side. this eerie, melodic track sets quite a special mood for the ep to start with. the b-side is opened by wrong assessment with a track that’s focussed on the low-end. this synth-driven track fits well in the mood set on the a-side, but continues with a heavier drive. the droning kick draws you in and makes you want to go dance the day away in smoke-filled rooms. savas pascalidis finishes the ep off with a banger true to his own style that relies on the drummachine for’s swing. this oldschool, loopy techno banger closes another outstanding ep by invite’s choice records.

following his uplifting 2015 single holdin on and its techy b-side faces, rony seikaly is back for another release on yoshitoshi that proves this renaissance man is a force to be reckoned with in modern house music. the two tracks on this ep possess deep grooves, but also flex a fair amount of melodic muscle. they liken back to the sound yoshitoshi became well known for in its infancy. the sword centers around some tribal percussion and carefully woven melodic ideas, but the track?s focus is decidedly on low end. a burly, assertive bass gives the mix a driving character suited for late nights. at time it feels like a modern take on progressive house from another era. all of a sudden is more or less an extension of the first track, giving the ep defined consistency. it s a delicately arranged and straightforward house feeler, the meat coming from a multitude of interlaced chords and melodies maneuvering carefully over more tribal percussion and a monstrous kick. the mission here is to inspire awe and wonder in dancers, and seikaly delivers on both accounts.

rekids latest signing peggy gou serves up two subterranean slices of quality with l.i.e.s. producer terekke providing a remix. the south korean artist, who was raised in the uk and now resides in berlin, kick started 2016 for rekids with her art of war release. she now returns to radio slaves imprint with a sequel. jen high boasts a heady bassline whilst quivering synths make way for serene key melodies. ‘when round, they go then deploys robust kicks as ebbing pads join acid licks, before germanys terekke provides a floating rendition comprised of soaring atmospherics and jazzy aesthetics.

gari romalis and lello di franco - dreamin for the uninitiated, our man gary romalis is the unsung master of detroit’s house and techno scene. having djed across the motor city’s top venues for the last three decades, gary is somewhat of a seminal figure for many of detroit’s djs currently at the forefront. following a slew of high quality releases on various labels over the past few years, gary now unleashes that special flavour on us for skylax 142! he is not alone though. with him, he brings all round italian partymaker, and top selector in his own right, lello di franco. let me tell you, this duo’s collaboration is something to behold. throughout all 3 tracks on the record, gary and lello maintain the essence of what the detroit underground is all about, stripped back tracks with soul that never feel like they go ‘big’ for the sake of it. while dreamin (wanda mix) may be packing a big kick and power clap combo, it’s the elegantly filtered, jazzy sample that will leave you wishing that the track lasted forever. the vibe takes a dip right into the deep in detroit underground (beat dat mix). spacious pad synths alongside a mesmeric vocal carry us through. taking a step back up, afrobeat rounds off the ep, made with a solid toolkit of afro-centric samples.

paride saraceni s debut truesoul release, burning, brings us three uplifting and vocal-heavy tech house tracks. a steady groove throughout, saraceni s choice of instrumentation and flowing percussion create a melodic yet techy release with all three tracks laced with a solid kick drum, tinkering high hats and sporadic vocals. burning is the perfect offering for the new year and proves there are big things on the horizon for saraceni

mister ho and heap are ambassadors of the river danube. this is their first offering for the esp institute. on side a, collision resistance throws us into the bowels of an underground sex lair with an adrenaline-laden heartbeat for a kick drum, a rough dose of fisting illustrated by the combination of bassline with low-tom and an unrelenting snare that whips us raw into submission. somewhere in between the waves of punishment we can start to audibly pick up tortured moans of endurance and pleasure, but maybe its time we pull our minds from the gutter, wipe the sweat from our brow and flip the record for a reward. with side b’s veils of the beloved, mister ho & heap deliver us via speedboat to the white isle, coasting along to bouncy staccato bass notes and machine bleeps as a euphoric chord progression puts us in an 808 state of mind. the percussion arrangement and phasing string flourishes are introduced through a filter, opening slowly as if coming up for air from a beautiful blue abyss. these two songs are neither too salty nor too sweat

leibniz takes no prisoners for his return to shtum. his new ep sees the leipziger by choice in best form. harsh but fair. -grind- is a masterpiece in the matter of building up tension with only few but proper elements. amen to that drumming and when the strings come in the dance floor is probably already burning. -foolish- is no less effective with its ultimate kick drum action and the way the pads are manipulated. romantic leibniz. on the flipside you get the vibrant -this is- in two versions. the -brecht mix- screams rave in capital letters with the bleepy synths and hard snare drum while the -scuff mix- trawls through dark and unearthy techno territories. no-nonsense music.

seb zito is an essential piece of the fuse jigsaw and his flat 1 ep sees the london based producer continue his ascent with his most dance floor focused tracks yet, harnessing the spirit of london s halcyon tech-house days. the vinyl only burnaby kicks things off a blissed out wiggler of a groove, the tracks b-line undulating throughout the track to give a real sense of character whilst holywell slams hard with its thudding kick and rampant percussion

ark & pit spector continue their inspired journey with an extended ep full of groovy jams and absorbing rhythms for hold youth. the frenchmen have formed a potent alliance with a series of expertly-crafted, high-quality releases dropping over the last couple of years. on this new ep they go deeper into their sound explorations with five original works and a remix from their parisian buddy and hold youth member, le loup. first up, we go into bumping jazzy territory with ‘chauffage central’, a mesmerising cut with swirling pads, soulful vocal clips and a jaunty b-line. straight up after that, hold youth rudeboy le loup gives ‘chauffage central’ a funky little rework, throwing live sounding percussion, nubian vocal clips, trumpet parps and a pumping bassline into the mix which gives a totally different identity. the final track on side a, is a cheeky teaser called ‘petite ondée’. rolling out for just under two minutes the track has a muffled, jazz-esque feel to it with a warm rolling bassline and bright, sparkling piano keys. on the flip we kick off with ‘air conditionelle’, a lush, retro feeling with those oh-so-familiar heavy-hitting eighties snare licks. the bassline takes you to a new york city street and the whole atmosphere is that of an old school nyc neighbourhood, while a spoken-word sample adds a human touch just before the track comes to an end. ‘sub tropical’ goes a little leftfield with an unusual combination of sounds in tandem with a pulsating low end, occasional sax licks and punchy percussion to give it plenty of energy. ‘averse et contre tous’ closes out the ep with a slothish ride into the sunset – ark and pit spector show their experimental side presenting an odd union between blues samples, gruff electronic sounds and piano keys. another triumphant effort from ark and pit spector, in fact, some of the finest work to date. make sure you check it out!

lost trax embody the idea of underground techno. the shadowy group, members unknown, began their music careers over 20 years ago. output may be low, but quality is high, the style being no compromise techno brilliance. and thats whats on show here. kick drums and squirming acid bars are at the core of faith, a track where soaring strings shift and reshape. the chiselled claps and barbed bass of flatliner follows, taking its cue from the heyday of detroit. a watery world of analogue abstraction greets the listener on the flip, lost being an atmospheric journey into to the squelching swamps of the tb303. sniping beats introduce the lush tones of renderer. blurring the lines of electro and techno the track is an elegant end to an ep of deep and dense layers.

the boys are gliding back onto the scene with scissor and threads first release of 2016, waiting ground. the handsome twosome of frankie skates and tony b. real deliver us four prime cuts aimed squarely at the dance floor. the vinyl-exclusive, ebreo, sees the duo flex their afro-rhythmic muscle, placing silky smooth bass over a bed of soft swirling percussion highlighted by a pitched down steel drum. next, an edit first heard on frank & tonys acclaimed resident advisor podcast comes to light. deftly cutting the hushed ambient tones of donato whartons absentia into perfect portions, frank & tony loop brittle bits over a chunky kick and shuffling hi-hat to hypnotic effect. the ep’s title track evokes the sun-kissed euphoria of early hour raves with its lush atmospherics and playfully subdued piano line buoyed by a thick kick and airy pads. finally pavane takes the previous tracks laid back attitude and flips it, adding a thick in-your-face kick and propulsive pads for a foot-stomping, hands in the affair dj weapon.

there is significantly more than a scintilla of exuberance on cosmin trg’s first 2016 venture on his own fizic imprint. number four in the series further explores the dense textures present on last year siiiep, but largely dispenses with the ennui in favour of a different discourse. oblic offers a brisk groove that ebbs and flows among graphite-thin layers of percussion and sonic debris. the recurring dust sample amplifies the vigorous rhythmic attributes of the track, rendering it withprime dance floor capabilities. serpenti takes distant sparkles of mutant chimes, wraps them around the relentless pulse of thudding kick drum and soaks everything in static. granules and grit are extracted from circuitry with a focus on razor sharp sound system efficiency. produced by cosmin trg, transformed by matt colton at alchemy mastering, with original artwork from cosmin himself.

maeve is the record label run by three close friends, mano le tough, the drifter and baikal. for maeve’s eighth outing it has enlisted the talents of long time friend ed davenport. the record grew from a chance hearing of some new material at eds studio one night and after a brief discussion it was decided that the tracks would find a fitting home at maeve. although recently more known for his harder techno releases under the moniker inland, silver walks is some what a return to eds roots. slower, emotive, more contemplative tracks, recorded over a pretty short period of focused studio time. silver walks is a synth-led jam. the arpeggiator holds pride of place as the centre of the tune with filter tweaks complementing its progression. kuromaku has a tougher attitude - heady and cosmic with a deep kick. it means black curtain in japanese.

vinyl only ... butch s newest offering retechno 2 is a bass heavy, dark, two track techno delight...... the kick drums are intense, the samples interesting and the synths are apparent too butch’s quirky style of production which can be heard throughout the ep.... first up is magnetic, which has a futurist edge with its spaceship sounds and deep grooves... on the b side antimatter is packed with energy, a driving bass line and fierce drops. butch’s productions are raw, powerful and robust a release not for the faint hearted.

the next installment on aus music sees the return of a relatively new addition to the roster rob glassett aka fold. throughout previous 12inches on manmakemusic and electric minds and on his outstanding netflix & chill debut for aus last year - fold has laced together dusty house grooves built with a classic approach to sampling funk, disco and soul records. next up - his lennys jam ep starts up with a dub techno groove built with delayed and panned stabs and sharp, pacy drums. rosie lea lays out a rich and sunny groove as a playful sample filters into focus over deftly treated drum kit samples and a buoyant bass line. tracksuits and tennis shoes then follows up with a no-nonsene party jam a short funk link is set over a booming kick that closes up a nicely varied package.

decisions is proud to announce its second release: empty gallery ep by waterhouse, a melbourne based producer, dj and vocalist. the ep spans 3 years of waterhouse productions (2013-2015), charting a sonic emergence suffused with spatial, textural and emotional complexity. the ep opens with ‘breathless’, a heady rush of ambience, shimmering cymbals and field recorded textures. ‘a little sheep’ follows, progressively immersing the listener in accumulating layers of vocal melodies. on ‘3415’ rapturous choral textures encircle delayed claps and a reverb-drenched kick drum to form the most urgently rhythmic cut on the record. side a ends with title track ‘empty gallery’, in which an intricate constellation of strings, pads, rumbling sub frequencies and brusquely dry percussion meet lyrics confronting life after loss.

caldera‘s *journey* reveals something unexpected through its driving beat, as shuffling rhythms scuttle around the uncompromisingly tough kick drum, only to be interrupted by organic sample constructions. *valuable* doesn‘t hide behind the opener: pitched-down vocal samples develop through foggy walls of delay. underneath it all, a churning beat grows, captivating the listener. it drifts slowly, always a little behind and stretching endlessly.

local talk release number 66 moves in deeper territories with a duo that needs no further introduction, greg dowling, shane johnson aka fish go deep. these two fine gents have been releasing music for more than two decades. both greg & shane played an integral part in the emergence of house music in cork city between the years of 1988 and 2001 as their well renowned sweat night at sir henrys helped to attract a host of talent, such as kerri chandler, laurent garnier, dj deep, glenn underground, derrick may just to name a few. it s a big, big honour to have them on aboard for this debut on local talk. first track, off script, takes us straight back to the days of prescription. the driving kick and bassline, warm pads and a hypnotic melody line that crescendos throughout the track keeping you hooked from start to finish. on the flip, northern reach, follows on the same theme. it hits deep, the strings adds that extra bit of drama and again showing the duo s skill in creating perfect atmospheric and timeless deep house. you wouldn t be surprised to hear dixon drop this in a dj set.

in the space of two short years shlømo has quickly established himself alongside the likes of marcelus, bambounou, francois x and the antinote records crew as a key figure in paris’ current techno generation. having established his own taapion records label in 2013 and built a roster around a core of local producers including roman poncet, pvnv and antigone, in addition to enlisting stephen brown, conforce and sterac as remixers for the label’s releases so far. for its fifth release, bright sounds - run by fellow parisian kennedy smith - revisits last year’s rechaïm ep (bsrx003), with a trio of remixers offering their own takes on shlømo’s established deep and expansive sound. first up is the aforementioned 50 weapons artist bambounou, who offers a dynamic groove-based version of the title track that bounces along an elastic kick drum with cut-up fragments of the original’s atmospheric pads providing further impetus. label owner kennedy smith takes on theory is the worst by bringing its dub textures to the for while filling the track’s empty spaces with intricate drum patterns. finally, italian techno pioneer donato dozzy turns grounded queen into a classic dozzy slow-burning techno trip, with his trademark layered sound complimenting the track’s subtle rhythmic backbone.
