ryuji takeuchi provides instruments of discipline with an ep of noisy, hypnotic tracks, ranging from giddy, stomping, left-field techno to melancholic ambience, the ep’s title ‘one’s sentiment’ provides a thoughtful angle to this at times cacophonous collection, for while they are bristling with noise there is something contemplative about the pieces, expressed in a way that suggests more than one thought trying to take life at the same moment, ryuji finds space for conflicting voices both spatially and in terms of mood, the first three tracks, ‘ambivalence’, ‘sadness’ & ‘sorrow’ crawl with competing elements, synth lines drool over and meld with throbbing kick patterns, anxiety & excitement are tightly wound in focus as tracks build and develop, leaving the listener to navigate these abstract planes, intoxicated, while the final track ‘regret’ is a compelling piece of noisy, ambient minimalism that allows for an austere pause after the eruption of the initial works. it becomes evident that ryuji’s journey as a producer, through periods of hard-techno, deep-minimalism and the more abrasive ventures on huehelix, has created a powerful and nuanced voice that is fully on display in ‘one’s sentiment’.

the remixed tracks from ascetic’s second album ‘everything is becoming’ are a collision between industrial techno, ebm influenced bass lines, doom and dark ambient. four berlin based artists: ancient methods, phase fatale, unhuman & luna violenta offer their take on the two opening tracks ‘utterings’ and ‘exegesis’ from the album. roared vocals, guitar both jagged, creepy and ambient, live drums and samples are all melted down and reformed into at times recognizable and at times wholly alien compositions, ancient methods, phase fatale and unhuman offer different approaches to techno punishment while luna’s interpretation is a cacophonous build that explodes into sonic abstraction. this ep is a perfect example of what berlin does so well, where genres that share aesthetic values feedback, overlap and inspire.

previously spotted on emotional especial with the fantastic love is enough 12inch, plus instruments get the remix treatment in a classic 80s style with the dub is enough single. the producers tasked with delivering versions vary wildly, but they make for a strong combination. jamie paton s -cloudy dub-out- is masterful, simmering the elements down to a sensual bassline and delicate ripples on top, while luke solomon brings his bumpy, off-kilter house style to the table. khidja has a more dramatic, synth laden approach and alphonse creates a dusty, funky roller out of that killer bassline groove.

last year, music from memory released a brilliant retrospective of vito ricci. music for amiga is riccis first vinyl record of original music in decades. this project was made on the commodore amiga (with its infamous sound chip) composing all the pieces on music mouse laurie spiegels pioneering software from the mid-80s.

(emotional) especial are just the kind of label to jump on such deviant club fare, and on this package -love is enough- gets a variety of remixes that all embrace the groups seedy ambience. richard sen brings a muscular thrust to the track, while khidja takes a more delicate approach. luke solomon meanwhile casts his years of experience in oddball house on his steady grooving version, and then jamie paton taps into the industrial vein to finish the package off in fine style.

black box recorders aren’t black, they’re orange. often they are destroyed and they don’t always have all the answers we’re looking for. this recording documents a collision/collaboration between two sound artists, michael bjella (gog) and robert skrzy&#324,,,ski (micromelancolié). this is what survived and this is all we have left, the sounds should tell the whole story.
