kyle geiger brings you his third installment on his imprint cubera in a quest to bridge some crucial gaps between house and techno constituents. this time, taking it a little deeper with the use of vocal work from vocalist stefanie jansen for the title track scream, weaving her voice in and out of a strong synth and percussion work out. in the second mix of the a-side, truncate lends his tough, stripped style for his remix of >scream<, providing a welcome contrast to the original. on the other side, >underneath< adjusts the eps sweat dial to 11 with its shit-losing, raw synth hook. the fact that this track even has a sweat dial that goes up to 11 should communicate something really special. the final track step brings more of an stabby, yet scaled back afterhours vibe to round things out, while still carrying enough critical mass to make things a little messy.

the restless berliners are back to bring some sun back to the dancefloors. fargo is a real open air hymn which you can only love or hate. an oldschool organ bassline on a minimal house beat topped with strings and disco vocals. this must be a hit. save yourself i a little bit darker but also a pretty strong track with a piano hook that you wont get out of your head too soon. the b side takes it back a notch with the more laid back tracks now youre gone and the fargo remix from the young and talented mass digital from serbia. thats proper deep house here on keno records.

special tracks have a special story behind them.and this one certainly does. after mario & vidis recorded a couple of tracks with ernesto for their debut album changed they invited him to perform in their home country. during his short stay in lithuania ernesto performed two times and both times closed his set with a track called care. it was kind of a mash-up - swedish singer & songwriter was using lyrics of his old song to sing over metro areas classic caught up to a big effect - leaving the packed dance floors to a sing along to lyrical hook of sisters and brothers, smokers and lovers, care for me every time. big fan of metro areas sound vidis offered him to do a reversion of this mash-up using caught up as a reference and inspiration. the vocals were re-recorded, new arrangement was done, and the song was tested in the clubs as well as live on stage. so here it is - another big tune from the three to sing and dance along

the citizens bands second instalment for ramonas favourite label hollows their long lasting love affair. christian beisswengers (cb funk, one half of arto mwambe) is nothing less than dealing with the demise of an empire. >broken rome< is a codeine trip through early nu groove rave tracks as well as an ode to junior vasquez at the helm of the sound factory seen and heard through frosted glass. >densed< on the other hand tips its toes into the current deep house stream with an arto-mwambe-like hook and a thumping bass line. the spaces in-between those rudiments are taken up by the idm finger exercise and jewel that is >into<: ottoman dancing!

march sees the formidable hypercolour deliver its most surprising output yet, an ep from none other than groove armada. tom findlay and andy cato need little introduction as groove armada. chart smashes, huge live tours and being part of the worldwide electronic music history aside, the duo have never lost touch with their acid house roots and have continued to be devoted to record buying, djing and the much maligned promo trawl. tom and andy have been avid followers of the label it seemed, since its inception. it was through label head jamie, meeting the guys back in 2010 at space in ibiza, and then continued communication via hypercolour promos, that led to an out-of-the-blue email requesting an informal hook up in east london and, within just a few days, a release was scheduled. that release is the >no knock ep<, four tracks that range from 808 fuelled old school cuts to low slung, moog-bassd electronic funk. each sound is lovingly crafted but there is an analog rawness throughout and every track has the sort of tweaked, off-kilter and occasionally awkward vibe that hypercolour do so well. it just takes a bit of imagination to guess what a ga release on hypercolour should sound but failing that, just check the release out as it wont disappoint.

this latest 12 comes courtesy of phil mison & pete herberts much lauded reverso 68 project. baa boo is exactly the kind of blissfully dreamy groove we have come to expect from this accomplished production duo, musical, melodic and tailormade for sunnier climes. on the flip we have piano 89, pretty self explanatory really, but for the benefit of those not pushing 40, its an old school house jam, drenched in the kind of italo piano hook that used to ignite late 80s dancefloors and is destined to do the same some 20 years on - magical.

gerardo frisina goes back to the roots of the sound which has made him famous worldwide: the latin sound of classics like >descarga< or >the latin kick< (both previously released on schema). >moderno primitivo< is an ep about the encounter of the ancient afro-cuban tradition (the core of frisinas artistic dna) with a refined electronic taste. this component enriches drums and percussions and gives more edge to the whole production with details like pads and effects. in >moderno primitivo< the latin ensemble headed by frisina takes us into a jam session where percussions, piano and trombone play happily. the latin house mix is a club version where the rhythmic element and the groove take control of the mix. the melody is broken and a hammond plays over a ostinato bass. the flavour is definitely tribal. >cogele el ritmo< is a trip into frisinas latin world. slower than >moderno primitivo<, still has a solid hook to the dance-floor and is a triumph of joy and colour.

christian smiths tronic label enjoyed a fantastic year in 2011, persistently receiving plaudits from the media, scene tastemakers and the record buying public for the labels consistently first-rate output that consisted of a genre-blurring mixture of tech house and progressive flavoured techno floor-smashing grooves. since meeting in berlin during summer of 2011, christian smith and florian meindl have stuck up a productive studio partnership. having released their first collaboration - desire - via meindls flash imprint in december, this subsequent ep for tronic sees the duo take their corporation a stage further with a two tracks of slightly left of centre yet unashamedly peak-time tech house. mothership leads off the ep with a distinctive retro-electro bassline that builds into the main hook via a series of peaks and drops before taking off into a tweaked crescendo of high-pitched tones. red alert opts for a subtler approach, creating its simple but effective groove from jacking percussion and wobbly synth stabs, which pulse throughout, morphing to distorting and echoing in the break.

the fifth release on baud music is the 2029 ep by dario zenker aka 4.26 from munich. distorted dub imitations rooted in a rhythmic foundation, supplemented with penetrating driving shakes, shape the character of the first track the chief. a floating, thumping bass line and claps with elegant dreamy strings characterize the second track least one on the a side. the flip side welcomes us with sherhood with his straight solid beat and a dominant, catchy hook. alen combines dubtechno and dupstep into free-floating wave elements and obscures the perception of the 4/4 time, which transfers the listener into a state of suspense.

following the stunning album that (finally) surfaced on tirk records last year, seventeen-piece live disco band escort arrive on sister label nang via red music by popular demand with two of the most prevalent cuts from the album, cameleon chameleon & starlight, remixed by anglo-japanese powerhouse max essa, and red records label boss and ilija rudman. ilijas cut of cameleon chameleon is as funky as they come, enveloping strains of the originalin his silken synth work and driving dance-floor percussion. edits of adeline micheles vocal hook are teased in throughout, beautifully done but never deriving from the fact that this is strict dancefloor stuff. next up, max essa delivers a stomping rendition of long time favourite, starlight. his cut stays true to the original, retaining vibe, funk and feeling, but giving it that subtle injection of house that is just made for peak time at the dance. if you like your disco live, the escort collective has a couple of uk dates penned in for march / april 2012, so keep em peeled!

south american label woods n bass unveils its new vinyl-only imprint, woods n bass limited, with wet feet by will azada and piltdown sound. the title track, wet feet, is a forward-looking slice of tribal minimalism that encapsulates the ethos of the label with its dubbed-out, winding hook, thoroughly drenched in dirt and brooding overtones. on the flip, piltdown sound goes solo with rbml, a detroit-esque piece that relentlessly works the floor with its twisted organ and chord stabs trading places for dominance. tying up the release, will azada amplifies the sleaze-factor with the driven bass and tweaked synths of slangin low. living up to its name, wet feet, is just the beginning for woods n bass and its new vinyl series, and promptly received enthusiastic support from influential global techno tastemakers raiz, seph, jeroen search, samuli kemppi, and detroit techno militia to name a few.

the long awaited dubplate anthem is here! as soon as we at ns-hq heard >drum track<, we knew atlantas helix would fit right in around here. his two main obsessions are old grime and looping hypnotic berlin techno. and it shows, as both collide here to produce the ultimate rhythm track. this is anthemic 8 bar techno, or sublow gone hands-in-the-air raving. this trak destroyed every festival we played at last summer. this is super-stripped down, poised club music - exactly what night slugs is all about. on the flip, we are honoured to have one of our all-time favourite mic controllers flirta d bless drum track with his >no hook no bs< version. known best for such grime bangers as slks >hype hype< and his own >warp speed<, flirta brings that unique sound-effects laden flow to the riddim like its 2004 again and triumphant rave anthems are going off once more.

with their feet firmly positioned on dutch soil, the heads and hearts of dam swindle are nonetheless rooted deep into the soul of the motor city, and this ep of finely crafted grooves on jimmy posters and huxleys fledgling saints & sonnets imprint is as brilliant a reflection of their obsession as you could expect. >the wrap around< combines a killer vocal hook with a silky line, but its the bassline that marks it out, coming in with a thudding bassline that twists itself into all manner of unfiltered goodness at the halfway point. >pain tomorrow< meanwhile prefers to let its skipping percussion do the talking with a bumping chord led groove that would put mcde to shame. the ep is rounded off with a killer remix of the title track from deleusions of grandeurs pattern select, turning in a sparse reworking which transforms the light original into a throbbing piece of basement house.
