little is known about the london-based producer and dj who goes by the name of u, but that hasnt quelled praise from bedroom heads, industry tastemakers and big name press alike. audio arbiter george fitzgerald originally met u on a holiday in greece and immediately commissioned a handful of 12inches, each brimming with trademark mechanical bliss, like pleasure tinged with menace. u has since gone on to release for erol alkans phantasy sounds (both as a solo artist and in collaboration with babe, terror as btu), being given the nod by the guardian, mixmag and the line of best fit.

deep disco warrior the revenge turns in an epic hypnotic mix of slow burning house nailed down by analogue bass and acid. using a filtered vocal it builds slowly as the bottom end is tweeked towards a mesmeric journey through minimal wigged out disco. sleazy mcqueen and romano arcaini turn in a disco inflected house mix with congas, spaces out synths and enough dynamics to keep any dancefloor bubbling. it builds with added percussion and a filtered pad before the lead hits the break and the track comes back in with even more wallop. drug empire is an original off the album and has had support from the likes of rune lindbaek, crazy p’s hot toddy and horse meat disco. said to be inspired by theo parrish’s productions it’s a delicious slice of bass driven deep disco with a nod to the looser end of detroit and chicago. it’s all about the fully locked in three note analogue moog bass which holds down the grooved out drums before breaking to jazzy rhodes at the end. one for the heads.

following 2013s ubiquitous smash untitled and last years heavyweight erotic discourse remixes, paul woolford returns to the hotflush fold with a double-headed cerberus, orbit/ mdma. flexing signature versatility, woolford goes from heads-down to hands-in-the-air in the flip of a record: a dance floor locked in to the twisted sirens of acid rave (orbit) experiences a sudden belly rush as it collectively comes up to piano breakdowns and female chant (mdma). towering and physical, the record epitomises paul woolford’s enduring popularity.

with sounds as smooth as butter and grooves as juicy as jam fillings, joe the baker gill has cooked up two fondant slabs of disco funk right here. theres a sweaty post-punk sheen to cant explain thanks its slaphappy bassline, fuzzy guitars and sultry vocals. mamba gascoine, meanwhile, is a foggier, swampy slice of cosmic, dub-minded funk designed for the darker, heads-down moments. remix-wise the everreliable emperor machine step forward with two epic, 10-minute workouts that explore every possible corner of joes jiggling, party-friendly groove.

multipurpose french techno artist leghau plants his name in the heads of a large public thanks to a string of releases on various international respected labels such as figure, sleaze, skryptom & credo. supported by a lot of key producers, his music is a blend of various influences and styles that gave him much respect and bookings for huge events and in clubs as techno parade in paris, the rex club and berghain.

fumiya tanaka s double-tracker >beautiful town< was fully inspired by its cover artwork: a set of carefully selected old pictures with a layer of masterful signature paintings by romanian artist and fine-arts student bonjour bonsoir. a-sides >abacus avenue< is the ep’s most dense and eerie side. an addictive piece that utterly succeeds in sucking you right in like a vortex would. the locomotive bassline serves its purpose of movement in a strong loopy groove, while the pads and poltergeist y sounds reformat our heads with an inability for space-time tracking. the otherside of this town, >himegami marathon<, is another mysteriously intricate work. its a microcosm of grooves, sinister details and voices locked in a tight groove built on a single bass stab and a flowing, never-ending set of wet claps. a piano kicks in at key points, alongside percussive elements, reminding us that this town is alive.

drawing from the leftfield avant-pop of arthur russell and talking heads, progressive disco of nile rodgers and contemporary ambient electronica, retiree channel these influences through their own pervasive aura of rum-drunk antipodean sunshine. the result is music that is in equal parts lush, thoughtful melody and meditative tropical rhythm. the ep sees joint international release from peckham label rhythm section international who released the instant classic debut of al dobson jr, and were nominated for label of the year at gilles peterson s 2015 worldwide awards, as well as purveyors of southern hemisphere groove-driven underground pop, plastic world (gl, savoir).

benedikt frey heads this latest offering from the batti batti label, teaming up with jonas.san for -girl from venus-, which pair the former s signature raw drums with the latter s outtakes of muted trumpet. complementing this, batti batti s own owen jay & melchior sultana lay down a typically deep atmospheric houser with a few twists and hidden melodies in the shape of title track tribal roots and the 12inch is further embellished by productions from debutant lars behrenroth and mexican duo romeo c & alhan g who have previously been featured on a digital batti batti release.

every week end im going to concrete to listen the artists who are playing there. i m talking about music with them , and do the same with people sharing the dancefloor with me. i collect all these inputs and ideas, all this energy, to define what concrete music dna is. because of this variety of people, tastes, and point of views, the label can t be reduced to one and only genre. to make the music more easy to apprehend, we are splitting the label in 3 parts, 3 differents moods, or more precisely, 3 times of the day... concrete music 7am contains the kind of music you could easily listen in our club at dawn, when the light is blue and the sun starts to filter through the mi-closed shutters. minimalistic, freaky or mellow, but always deep. concrete 3pm is definetly turned to house music. 3pm is the time when smiles are on every face, when the same vibe, the same energy, is going through every stomach in the room, and the crowd becomes one same entity. concrete music 4am aims for the more techno and black side of the music we love. at 4am, fists are pumping the air, or heads are down and eyes closed. it s not about how hard or fast the kickdrum beats, but how thick the atmosphere is.

the second release on fina white is a four tracker from rising barcelona producer and former rbma attendee clip! diverse releases on discomaths, classicworks, sweat taste and jd records, coupled with his signature hardware only live shows have really put clip! on the map locally and throughout europe. key to his sound is a shifting style and impressive knowledge of sound design, displayed on this brotherhood ep though four pure and unadulterated peak time cuts. there s a real menace to the bassline, low end throb and razor hats of the title track, whilst r36 showcases the fusion of sounds clip! can attain in his productions. on the flip side, forward is, surprise, a no messing, relentlessly percussive banger whilst dissonance s technique heads down an equally straight-up, rough n ready path.

joe goddard just had to knock on that door. the wall of his recording studio had been pulsating with original analogue house jams for too long, dry ice practically sifting through the vents. behind that door was gentleman george t, and before long the two heads were nodding to obscure dat edits and 4th hand soul samples as george plundered a wealth of forgotten late 90s dats from of a box in the corner. true story. and now those dat edits, lovingly un-restored, are available for the first time on greco-roman, the record label, party and artist collective of whom hot chip s joe goddard is a founding member.

russias art crime seemingly came out of nowhere with his first record and it blew us all away at phonica. lead track release was pure nineties house nostalgia, a huge reverbed piano over skipping drums that became an instant shop classic. we just couldnt get it out of our heads!

quickly becoming one to watch in the techno circles, john shima is making waves with his fresh approach to that classic detroit sound. his contribution for boe is nothing short of a stunning representation of underground electronic music. prototype is a sonic ode to industry: blueprinted in the motor city and forged in sheffield. it s heads down for the dance floor with shimmering metallic overtones and a side order of robot jack. ancient skies points more towards chicago stylings capturing the melancholy party vibe of early cajual records with crystal clear production skills and neat arrangements. transducer is groovy experimental techno that could have easily sat on the much-revered objet d art. it s electronic music that will stand the test of time. rounding off the ep in fine style is true distance. a stunning ambient piece with deep pads and swirling melodies that complement and round of the ep perfectly.

secretsundaze 017 comes from london based producer endian. releasing just 2 eps in a few years on nonplus and electric minds, endian has nevertheless managed to to turn the heads of the likes of steffi who used one of his tracks for her panorama bar compilation and boddika who also licensed a track for a various artists ep. sounding like a producer far more experienced than the two releases would indicate, it came as no surprise that this is far from the the output of a novice but the seasoned veteran george levings aka commix (metalheadz).

two slices of brilliant brazilian disco, painel de controle have a few bangers across their rca lps, these two being my favourites. *relax* is a straight up boogie monster, well known to deep disco & boogie heads flipped with *malandrinh* with its insanely catchy guitar. the original brazilian *relax* 7 inch plays at 33rpm (like many brazilian 45s), if you know you are cutting you will know this is not ideal. our new 7 inch is 45rpm and cut from a super crisp new master from the tapes at timmon cutting labs, sounds about 5x better than the o.g. ... simple choice.

tk disco come up trumps yet again with 2 absolutely solid, killer pieces of disco funk for the heads! the miami label has long had a cult following & found fame with disco aficionado s the world over & it s easy to see why. their back catalog is peppered with rarities & classics including the 2 cuts featured here.

cymasonic s offshoot vinyl-only label returns with the enigmatic argentinian artist fede zerdan contributing to cymawax s second outing. originally from tucumán, but currently living in barcelona, zerdan has established himself as a member of the discos paradiso crew. it s always the heads-down types that are the ones to watch out for and zerdan exemplifies letting the music do the talking. so what is he saying with the low boost ep? techno is unrivaled when it s at its most deep and immersive. a must have … this techno artifact was meant for wax.

the title track is a monstrous cut designed to get floors sweaty. with its futuristic synth smears, blasts of white noise and slick rubbery beats it is impossible to ignore. full of atmosphere and some ghoulish voices, it s a fine affair from this italian master. the malandra jr remix is even more tense, with industrial machine sounds zipping and fizzing about in a progressive groove, whilst martin patino deconstructs the whole thing and re-builds it as a jazzy minimal affair with sick chords, smears of colourful light and plenty of charisma. lastly, eddy romero & frink go for a dark, dubby, stripped back number that will please the real heads out there.

london based us producer lance de sardi joins the hudd traxx fray for the last 12inch before the label hits 50 releases and commence the 10th anniversary celebrations. although there s only three cuts on west country, de sardi more than shows his diversity as a producer and it s a fine addition to a discography that dates back to the 90s.pariah kicks the ep off in fine style with smooth beats, an infectious vocal and lush pads ensure that this will be a big one for the heads. flip for the b side and find a tough acidy number in youth, and a groovy track in race the clock which is made for the dance floor. 2015 is already proving to be a big year for hudd traxx following releases from iron curtis & nachtbraker, and lance de sardi keeps the flag flying high with this solid ep.
