as a creative tool, the theremin - bizarre, unique, and rarely heard - can be expressive, intuitive and highly adaptable. in hekla’s hands, her instrument covers an enormous range, from skittering birdsong of high frequency chirrups and chirps, to grinding, tectonic sub-bass. we are given the throbbing, apocalyptic dread of muddle and the baroque beauty of traditional icelandic hymn “heyr himna smi&#8706,,ur” in sequential tracks on the album’s a-side. appropriately, she also writes that the album title - Á - is similarly multifaceted in her native icelandic: “a river is an á and also it means ouch like when you hurt yourself, and also when you put something on top of something you put it á (on) something.”

that summer i developed somewhat of an obsession with tonto’s expanding head band after having seen them perform at the big chill festival that year. the music blew my mind. later upon my return to civilisation and the ensuing research which then began in earnest i became as much blown away by the enormous t.o.n.t.o. (the original new timbral orchestra) modular synthesizer that had created the music as i was by the music itself. built in the early 70s, it s still the largest synthesizer around today. with the live show still resonating in my head i tracked down everything tonto had ever recorded. one of these tracks was an obscure outtake from the time t.o.n.t.o.’s creators, malcolm cecil and robert margouleff, were producing and engineering for stevie wonder in the ‘70s(https://youtu.be/wuaszff7yq0). the track, bittersweet, only ever appeared on a highly limited self-released cd put together to coincide with their appearance at the big chill. consequently i featured it on a few mixes i did over the years and invariably i’d be asked “what’s that track?” by those with an ear for something unique. and invariably these same people, many of them djs, would turn away disgruntled when i informed them it was cd only. although i didn t know it at the time, the seed was definitely sown for this vinyl compilation that you now hold in your hands.

harlem s legendary disco label queen constance has long been a cult favourite among fans of underground dance music for decades. one of many labels operating under the equally legendary p&p family of imprints queen constance was operated by one peter brown, a truly colossal figure in nyc s music scene, it s catalogue still fascinates music lovers to this day. covering a wide range of styles including gospel, early rap and disco the label s output continually finds it way into the playlists of respected dj s and selectors across the globe. high fidelity will be the first in a series of queen constance rarities to be reissued, an extremely rare and coveted record that can change hands on the second hand market for big big money, avoid those low rent bootlegs that are out there and cop this fully licensed repress. the group s self-titled sole long-player is a fantastic 6 track set of gritty, soulful and uplifting funky disco with a diy edge. not too much is known about the artists themselves, or even when the record was performed, recorded or released but it certainly sounds like a group who knew their craft inside out. the energy is high across the record and the group sound like they re on fire, just check the outrageously funkified magic carpet and you ll see what we mean. amazing. the whole project has that enchanting lo-fi, back-street feel to it in terms of production and the mind boggles as to how such a record would have come off had it been recorded at a motown or any other big studio, but no matter as this release is perfect the way it is, an essential piece of street-level nyc disco straight from the underground.

limited edition of 2000 copies on transparent blue 180 gram vinyl, housed in a gatefold sleeve. the electronic music duo groove armada released their fourth album “lovebox” in 2002. the album includes some of their best tracks, ramping through genres from rock ’n’ roll to the psychedelica and ska. it also features collaborations with artists like neneh cherry and richie havens, who ads some soulful voices to the whole. opener “purple haze” introduces us to a giant guitar riff and highlight “madder” takes the groove out of the clash’s “magnificent seven”, before moving on to the raps by m.a.d. they’re incorporating a lot of samples in the fine structured melodies of soul/funk/rock and hip-hop. after playing at club nights for years andy cato and tom findlay joined forces and created their debut album northern star and breakthrough hit “at the river”. it was the start of a collaboration that brought them hits like “my friend” and “superstylin’”.

after “star alliance”’s initial release as a limited six tape-box set, it was apparent that there was a need for a reissue, which now comes in the form of this remastered double lp set with a selection of the best work and even a few new tracks added. the story is the same but the narrative has been sharpened.

full disclosure...i changed the entire release schedule to jam this record in this year. when you listen, hopefully can see why. from getting the demos during my breakfast, the record was agreed and in the schedule by the time i’d finished my dinner. currently if you cut austin ato i believe he’ll bleed an amazing record. this record swings between a peak-time hands in the air pink loveheart vibe, hot and heavy classic sample based house, and some real basement orientated machine-made jacking house. its like a quadruple a side release, and i personally find it impossible to pick a favourite on here.

with new track warschauerstrasse , claudio ricci has created an expansive seven minute workout of twisted synths and deep house drums. the first remix comes from long time techno heavyweight timo maas and the prolific and inventive basti grub. their singular remix speeds up the original and layers in fluttering toms and percussive sounds as well as broad, groaning synths and the distant sound of a bustling city at rush hour. sudam label boss and ibiza based artist kintar flips the track into something spacious and haunting. eerie keys and sweeping synths keep you on edge as the rubbery techno groove rolls on into the night. bulgarian based metodi hristov loves to experiment and has a distinctive techno style that gains support from the likes of richie hawtin, carl cox and adam beyer. in his hands the track becomes a peak time tech banger.

with this debut ep, the ozzie producer succeeds in rounding up disparate & dubious elements together in a serious way without departing from a non-serious attitude - the record even rounds off with a very “put your hands in the air” moment with space gekko’s ravey sirens. “music to party on the river yarra to” (just google it).

whether or not techno music is destructive and to what degree is fair concern to have, but there s no denying that it can call upon our primal instinct of surrendering to rhythms together with everyone around the proverbial camp fire. sure, the camps of today are the clubs, and the fires are strobes, but that doesn t change the essence of rituals that we continue practicing. the release stays close to 130 bpm and offers efficient tools for the dancefloor: airy, for one, represents a syncopated narrative of wonder and magical realism, whereas in the hands of gotshell it becomes less contemplative, shifting to a more direct perspective. backed by cascading kicks xi takes a dive into atonal realm, and kujin —the most brutal number of ep—offers a densely packed treble range running above the hammering 3/3 kicks. with hydra, it s a trip laden with wondrous soundscapes, shamanic percussion and sensations of unexplored grounds emanating from the bassline, after which the closer trioptic provides a rebellious theme fitting for times of unrest and resistance.
