the particular view on a musical future might have been considerably different when olaf hilgenfeld (berlin) met iftah gabbai (jerusalem) for first sessions in 2004. the piano player hilgenfeld used the accordion that time mainly, whilst gabbai was using all instruments available, a computer was among those more by chance. only one year later the duo skinnerbox played regularly on such uplifting, innovative off-partys that came up in the new techno generation again.
that was just the beginning. skinnerbox have developed a purely electronically composed and performed music (partly featuring vocals by elle_p) – that is not based on loops but improvised techno inspired house and minimal house. the roles in the duo are clearly settled: olaf hilgenfeld – moog synthesizer, iftah gabbai – hardware drum machines, max/msp und ableton live.
all these distinct impacts and effects can be heard on their various releases from the last two years, but far better in their live sets. skinnerbox are an experience, taking you on expedition with paralyzing minimal, breaking house, hard-edged techno-jazz, and ambient electronica futurism.
it was a desire to eternalize this play- & colorful diversity, often just caused by the moment, as entire homogeneity. thus, they needed to leave temporarily their environmental techno and minimal house scapes. >king of spades and marmalades< – the result – is a jazz opus wrapped into a disco suitcase. it is a reminiscence as well as going far ahead of daily musical habits, shown not at least by the order of tracks, do not starting with a stunning hit of the album, but with 20 minutes of challenge.

phil kieran has been in the upper echelons of the electronic music game for more than a decade, but is only now releasing his debut album under his own name. known for rocking clubs and releasing a string of killer twelves, belfast-based phil has hooked up with german powerhouse cocoon in recent times. sven väths label is now about to release shh, a groundbreaking piece of work that will undoubtedly gain phil plaudits across the board. shh seems to not only reference every sound phil has ever loved in music, but is formulated in a completely fresh and futuristic way. listen carefully and you can detect elements of dub reggae, old hardcore like lfo, hip-hop, early 90s electronica such as autechre/black dog and other warp staples, as well as the futuristic techno that phil excels in. for the album phil went back to old sound lab recordings dating back to the 1950s and 60s. utilising some of these sounds in the initial construction, he built up tracks using a combination of old samples sourced from original and weird places and some live new instrumentation as well. there are live drums, some electric / acoustic/ bass guitar and live keyboard playing as well as some choice guest vocalists.

a fresh new collaboration with some top notch house tracks on this split release. agnes probably needs no introduction after his recent release on plak and running his own sthmllaudio, and he delivers all quality. big revelation on this 12 is jonny white with his tikkun olam... already a office favorite here at clone... we keep playing this over and over... somehow reminds of old deeper house tracks by mr fingers (athmosphere and basslines) but with modern productions skills. killer track and killer split release with some forward thinking house music thats embracing the future, without forgetting the past! recommended!

since more than 10 years dennes deen is one of the most important djs in the nightlife of austria. with his special sound he always plays himself into the heart of his audience. besides his many gigs he works also on own releases with success. with his studiopartner he had already some releases on philipp straubs label titanium and through that cooperation dennes got the offer to do a remix for the owner of the label, which was published on deep dishs label yoshitoshi. what dennes deen will do in the future is not sure yet, but we are sure that we will hear a lot of him furthermore. the remix on the flip is by gary beck, a fixture on labels such as edit select, perc trax and soma. this one will go into the cases of hawtin, beyer and the likes in no time!

d: generator & dj ss - killa: this track delivers exactly as its name promises. a melodic wobbling chord builds gradually to the sounds of a distant vocal sample, and intense climbing bass, which all combine and drop with sheer vengeance. expect to slay the masses when this tune is pulled out of the bag.
