two-thirds of sigur rós, bass player georg holm and drummer orri páll dýrason, have teamed up with icelandic composer hilmar Örn hilmarsson and sigur rós touring guitarist, and georgs brother, kjartan holm to create an uninterrupted 72-minute instrumental album inspired by 100 years of archive footage of vaudeville, circuses and carnivals. the double vinyl release includes a cd-copy of the album.
>gobbldigook< is the spectacular opener of sigur ros recent album >med sud i eyrum vid spilum endalaust<, undeniably one of the most hymnic songs they have written thus far. fellow islanders stephen stephenson aka presidentbongo (of gus gus fame) and jack schidt couldnt resist but to transform the complex, polyrhythmic original into an exceptionally ethereal club track. when the angelic voice of jon birgisson unfolds on a club soundsystem it reallyfeels like you are in heaven. the ultraslim percussion groove takes over the tribalistic atmosphere of the original but catapults it some hundered light years forward into the future. thomas fehlmanns remix on the flipside is nothing short but sensational. we have no clue how he managed to turn this song into a schaffel but we salute him and take this as another unmistakable sign that the schaffelfieber is rising again in cologne, berlin, reykjavik andelsewhere ...
history freely dilates and collapses on valgeir sigurðsson’s dissonance, his first solo release since 2012. its three large-scale works are haunted by the old western tradition, infused with the ethereal workings of electronics and sound manipulation.
dissonance treads elegantly along a fine line between traditional symphonic organicism and the fissures of the faltering structures of reality. it takes forward sigurðsson’s typically expansive, panoramic writing, and elevates it to a perpetual construction and deconstruction of time and space.
these are hardly his first experiments with the archaic technology of classical instruments, but here the distance between past and present is precisely what the music itself is designed to explore, and to distort.

valgeir sigurdsson, former producer of björk, has made his name as an exponent of musical subtlety. as an engineer and producer, hes often focused on the intimate, the miniature. draumalandid (dreamland), a documentary about the exploitation of icelands natural resources, tells a story about huge things-the fortunes of a whole nation, the destruction of vast landscapes, and the global economic forces, greater still than any nation, that fuel it all-and for his soundtrack to the film, valgeir has brought out a heavier set of tools. exciting music for fans of max richter, deaf center, björk.
