seth troxler continues to showcase the work of chicago great k’alexi shelby: after an ep on his other label tuskegee music and a remix for sean miller on this imprint, shelby now steps up to play it say it with a trio of excellent club cuts. k’alexi shelby is one of the windy city’s most venerated heroes. he’s put out six albums and almost 60 eps since the late eighties, all of which have helped evolve and establish the chicago house sound around the world. next to remixing acts like the pet shop boys and derrick may, he runs his own k klassik and 321 labels and remains as vital as ever. the perfectly titled ‘groove with us’ opens up with a cut and paste style, funky disco loops and plenty of filters all bringing the loose house funk. it’s a playful and timeless tune that is designed to blow up the ‘floor and most certainly will thanks to its unbridled energy. the dynamic and driving ‘so chicago’ then slips into a slick house groove, with great percussion, more big string samples lighting up the track and a knotted bassline that keeps you on your toes. suspenseful and explosive, it’s filled with authentic party vibes and a real sense of fun that will ignite any set. last but not least is the excellent ‘black sunday’, which takes uplifting preacher vocals from a church sermon and backs it with gospel singing, an old school baseline and raw energy that will get hands in the air. it’s a definitive piece of authentic house music with real heart and soul. this is an expressive ep of house tracks that embody the instinctive and emotive spirit of the genre to perfection.

never released before on lp, here comes the complete original soundtracks of french cult film composer françois de roubaix for director yves boisset. two movies that embody the two sides of francois de roubaix’s approach to recording. for le saut de l’ange (1971), the self-taught composer wrote an orchestration for some fifty musicians playing strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion with two distinct solo instruments alternating the main theme: indian sitar on the one hand and accordion on the other. r.a.s (1973) was recorded on a 8-track tape recorder, in françois de roubaix’s home studio rue de courcelle, where most of his 70’s scores were recorded. the result is a mix of military-march rhythms, rolls on the snare-drum with sounds of synthi aks syntheziser: de roubaix invented a modern sound for this contemporary-history tragedy.

samuel van dijk is an electronic music producer, sound designer and media artist from the netherlands releasing deep electronic music as vc-118a, mohlao, and multicast dynamics. drawing inspiration from technology, nature, film, and fiction, his productions and live sets embody a dynamic musical framework. since the dutchman surfaced as mohlao for labels like meanwhile, field and other heights at the turn of the decade, van dijk?s music has found a firm position, the ethereal electro vc-118a project, deep ambient techno as mohlao, and subterranean ambient as multicast dynamics.

after solemnly closing out the spc-series in 2016, jeroen search hands in his second ep of the year for figure. carrying his signature style, these tunes embody the live-recording feel he is known for, perfectly executed and arranged in clean-cut layers. both tracks on the a-side feature big and beefy beats, their generous sub-range creating ample space for the juxtaposing elements to effectively slice through, whether it be the penetrating bleeps of deduced or the piercing rides on interval. things get bumpy on the flip when the rugged but undeniable groove of steady pulse firmly stands its ground against repeated onslaughts of flailing percussion. the jolty rhythms and tinkling loops of endless circles may seem like it being the odd one out, but unexpectedly merge into an intricate mesh of sounds, making for a most memorable closer to this jam-packed ep.

breaking his silence after twenty years, sebastian snoeck a.k.a sebastian s. will be the second member of belgian collective “bwp experiments” to release on the basic moves imprint. he has handed over two previously unpublished tracks made under the moniker caustic 14. after listening to “personal space invader” in 1997, carl craig asked sebastian s. to produce new material for his own label, planet e. “message in a box” and “rising star” were therefore made as a response to this request. however, due to a political transatlantic rift the tracks never saw the light of day and have since been stored on dat tapes, hidden away from the general public’s ears. if i had to describe sebastian’s output, i’d say it is most importantly energetic, positive, and groovy. it bears the mark of a certain nostalgia, shying away from the blind celebration of both futurism and experimentation in order to reach intemporality. this attempt to exist outside of time gives his productions a certain character and in my opinion his music has come to embody something i like to call “space opera techno”. sebastian s has succeeded where many before him have failed: by avoiding copycat tactics and simplified approaches to production he managed to create a singular identity. the tracks are recognisable after the first few seconds – and that’s what makes his work so unique!

on the a side, two tracks from playful death, a producer whose sounds are influenced by comics such as biomega and the invisibles.
the first track on the b side is from yxan, which is micheal idehall’s techno alias. michael is a multi-talented artist who leads a publishing house called belzebez that also features many of his own artworks and has had releases on prominent labels such as ant-zen.
next up is necropants a producer who enjoys roaming around graveyards and and seeking out ancient burial mounds. the last track on the b side was created by bellatrix?, an up and coming producer from verona, italy who has recently released an excellent ep on the veleno viola imprint. bellatrix? also heads a tape label called culto verona.

here it is! some brand-new wax for your listening pleasure! the days are becoming longer, summer is just around the corner, and our latest release appears to perfectly embody the spirit of something new, something fresh, and something exciting. indeed, we’ve combined all this into a single 12” featuring the likes of satl & electrosoul system, and invadhertz. the release is all about good mood and chilled vibes, and virtually anything you can tag with the liquid label (if you really need to). but categories aside, our new twelve incher comes with a superb collab between satl & electrosoul system on one side, and with a solid track by the upcoming collective of invadhertz on the flipside. the former, entitled “satless”, is a warm, vocal-infused gentle roller that seems to be best enjoyed in the sunny days to come, while the latter, named “lily”, offers a nice combination of a bit rougher percussion section and booming bassline enriched with even more of vocal inserts. all in all, the whole single is a tasty treat for all those into the lighter side of drum & bass.

hand-picked selection of tracks by uk s negative response in this initial limited run of 300 discs. negative response is a diy minimal synth project that formed in 1980. they self-released 3 cassettes from 1981-1983 as well as playing a number of gigs from 82-85. the tracks embody a very melancholy atmosphere reinforced by their arsenal of early electronic analogue equipment. this collection will certainly appeal to fans of early bedroom synth artists such as john bender and other diy home recording moguls of the era. all tracks remastered from cassette by martin bowes at the cage, uk.

after building their reputation as a force for positivity in the berlin dance scene, berlin bass collective have looked amongst their ranks to find two producers with the talent to reflect their tried and tested ethos which has been setting dance floors alight across berlin and the uk. built from a palette consisting of raw, low-fidelity found sound, obscure disco reworking and original bass lines these tracks are built to function as well underneath the mirrorball of a packed dance floor as they are kicking back at a friend’s house party.
on the a, brian ring draws on his immense knowledge of the disco and soul roots of house music. channeling the spirit of his night time dalliances as a resident of both the disco kiez and house of love parties in berlin, brian’s productions embody the philosophy that good music is music that gets people moving.
on the flip, bridge guy takes us into super chill with a collection of organic, lo-fi tracks that loop beautiful disco bass lines and vocals so sultry you will feel like you’re floating.

the fifth modern cathedrals release by altstadt echo seeks to exhume genuine, complex, and often contradictory human emotion from dead samples and broken beat structures. throughout the 1905 ep, the artist crafts melodies that embody a tension between nostalgia and frustration, supported by carefully textured and relatively functional percussion. the remix of dry despair by abdulla rashim (ar) strips the original of its lofty chords, instead pursuing a focused and bone-dry experimental techno approach. in contrast, the remix by stave combines elements of the original’s drifting atmosphere with violent industrial percussion.

phonograph music is back with a 4 tracker by anthropous anonymous. four cuts that embody a poetic approach to dance music, trough deep house, balearic and tribal. a few months ago, in the time and space of a few impromptu sessions, an ep was conceived and produced. not much was planned, but the voice and the keyboard notes our dear brazilian friend roberto coelho hit, gave the whole thing its not so but quite ambiguous form and meaning. soon after that, the music just flowed…
