greek producer markos spanoudakis aka kreon has certainly made an impact on the electronic music scene.his percussive and jazz tipped sound has found its place through solo releases for labels such as cecille, robsoul and many more seminal underground imprints. his latest offering on serialism has been widely received by a small handfull of the scenes elite who have been dropping tracks from the ep all summer hualtor kicks of proceedings with delayed vocal stabs that roll over a 4x4 kick and a doubled up snare. the bass groove cleverly pitches up and down and is completed with a series of shuffled hi hats which complete this minimalistic winner. up next on a2 is forpsyche, which encomopasses a tough and rolling drum selection with swing added for good measure, a sub bass, warm pads and erratic lead stabs bring the all the elements together nicely. third track ‘valtera’ then keeps to kreons signature laid back grooves, shuffling drum licks and the use of processed vocal stabs, the track seamlessly rolls with a series of lo-fi glitches and pitch shifted chord stabs. finally forpyke rounds off the package as it rolls out a sure fire drum selection full of swing and stripped-back percussive hits, repetitive chord textures ebb and flow throughout the composition which results in a truly hypnotic and raw dance floor killer, with intricate percussion patterns that are packed full of swing.

“drugstore phones” is a double lp from russian wizard piper spray. this enigmatic producer is a hidden gem of russian electronic underground. the album is taking you on an unexpected trip in many ways - it’s hard to define the genre but one can feel the author’s willingness to experiment and explore new sounds. this sonic documentary of piper’s world is breathing and constantly changing, though it’s the most balanced and mature work of the author. a spectacular opener for gost zvuk’s gatefold lp series.

lord of the isles, a.k.a. neil mcdonald, has spent the better part of a decade steadily producing and releasing beautiful music. the esp institute has always wholeheartedly believed in neil’s work ethic and his journey as an artist who constantly refines his vision, and when we inevitably approached in hopes of working together, we were enamoured by the sheer breadth and depth of work he had in progress’. there are two types of artists. one internalises their process, endlessly perfecting their work while finding the endpoint a massive hurdle, in turn they produce immaculate yet very little art. the other is continuously inspired, so full of ideas they can barely work fast enough to articulate them all. the art becomes by-product of their larger trajectory and not just a collection of endpoints. lord of the isles seems to be both, always in an evolving state of process where the work is constantly shed to make way for the new layer growing beneath, yet he holds his cards closely, cherry picking when and with whom he releases his art into the world. neil is simply prolific. he shared with us a vast catalog of unheard beauty, which over a long span of time was collaboratively shaped into his debut album “in waves”. the title speaks to neil’s process both intimately and from afar, it speaks to the emotional ebb and flow of the music itself, and ultimately it speaks to the listener. ahead of the album’s release, we are proud to share with you the single ‘weh-in’, a mesmerizing arpeggio melody that opens and closes, purrs and barks, and plays nicely with its percussive accompaniment over more than 10 minutes. this lengthy single version of the track is joined by a dark and stormy, exclusive non-album cut entitled ‘pik’, as well as a big room rave remix by esp institute resident ian blevins, which take us to a slightly more frantic place while retaining the euphoric essence of the original.

when hitting a streak it s best to keep going. for a prolific producer like ubx127 one ep just wasn t enough to keep up with his continuous output of high quality techno. constant permutation part 2 picks up where its predecessor left off and provides for another batch of deadly club weapons. living up to its title, beatless explorations sends out eerie signals deep into outer space, anticipating with suspense to maybe find some life form s response. it arrives in form of driving track felt and its ricocheting, arpeggiated synths, which would aptly soundtrack the decent of alien attack ships on our planet. weighty, yet mysterious Örnsberg seems to echo with the cries of long lost souls that have been trapped eternally inside its icy caverns. the ep ends with a masterclass in immersive sound design, a constant ebb and flow of layers, winding their way into the listeners subconscious. filling up a pair of twelves to the brim with tunes this well thought out and executed, ubx127 further displays his vast potential and leaves us with excitement for whatever he might be coming up with next.

mysterious brooklyn label and production crew getting in the game with some techno and ebm bangers. all are re-workings of recognizable or obscure classics. “looping blood” the clubbiest of the ep builds around a controlled bleeding loop and blossoms into a spiraling unstoppable groove accented by crashing reverbs and jackin drums. “alaaarmed” is a pounding re-edit of tommi stumpff, early german minimal punk not unlike nitzer ebb. “take two” is a great remix of front 242’s epic industrial classic “take one” dubbing out the lyrics for an instrumental approach. “open bar” puts the scissors to skinny puppy’s early 80s classic “last call” looks like the aptly named effective weapns label certainly providing some hot jams for this fall. fans of dark entires, minimal wave take notice

early september will see jorge savoretti release his river plate ep via visionquests special edition imprint, comprising three original compositions from the argentinian artist. having been involved in electronic music as a dj for over two decades now jorge savoretti is firmly cemented as one of the argentinas finest electronic music exports, starting from his humble beginnings in rosario he has gone on to release material with esperanza, claque musique and igloo-rec as well as touring the globe throughout. here we see jorge mark his debut for the visionquest special edition imprint with a new three tracker and taking the lead is title track river plate, radiantly showcasing savorettis dub-infused percussive led style with choppy swinging drums, ethereal pad swells a snaking sub groove and dub chords which ebb and flow throughout. following is parana high which takes a more refined, low-slung approach via soft chord flutters, bright stab sequences and bumpy sub hits while a shuffled percussive drive further fuels the groove. last up to complete the package is u-fonk which delves into darker territories with mind- bending glitch synths, robust rhythms and a vacillating bass lead running throughout its six minute duration.

invisible, inc now brings the aptly named spacerocks into the fold with the release of a 6- track ep that comes storming in from the outer reaches of a galaxy light years away (or just decades past?) into the earpiece of your unwashed spacesuit. it s hard to pinpoint what genre this actually fits into but if you imagine vapourspace s gravitational arch of 10 as interpreted by vangelis with drum programming by nitzer ebb you d be getting reasonably close. other influences may well include cluster, conrad schnitzler, chris & cosey to name a few, while comparisons can be made to contemporaries like solyst, musiccargo, barnt and secret circuit. spacerocks is a solo offshoot project from higamos hogamos main man steve webster (also fort lauderdale, the black neon, memphis industries, dc recordings). the project sees steve ditch his band and strip things down to his modular, vintage and custom-built synthesizer set up alongside equally rare and vintage analogue drum machines, sequencers and fx units.

damien lynch enjoys countryside a drive in the twilight hour. this is his second offering for the esp institute. on side a, brunette opens with a straight-ahead techno thump of hi-hats and a pulsating 16th-note bassline—a subtle playing field composed solely with a rare 1970’s italian machine, the godwin drummaker 32, unearthed from the secret back room of a music shop in rural ireland where it hid among wonderful vintage russian synths and oddball electronics. this elegant track drips with warm and phasing pads, gentle staccato keys and beautifully simple arpeggios that blur every now and then—all affirming damien’s less-is-more ideology. with side b’s forced relax, damien continues to exercise his restraint, arranging his instruments in a band-like fashion, affording each player the sonic space to project their individual qualities whilst supporting an overall dialogue. there is a soft ebb and flow to every machine’s role, whether the swelling of bass or the interplay of percussive keys, but when these characters arrive in one place, the result is a tranquil euphoria. these two songs will accept you for who you truly are.

for their next release, zone records welcome legendary french producer, remixer, singer, songwriter and emblematic musical star arnaud rebotini for a fascinating four track ep. alongside the standout music, the artwork for the ep is a photo of a suitably impressive sculpture of arnaud that the label have had specially commissioned for the release. arnaud rebotini has done it all, from pioneering electronic works to teaming up with chamber orchestras. a real synth wizard and mesmeric live performer who has remixed everyone from depeche mode to nitzer ebb, bloc party to rammstein, he is an award winning musician who also started the seminal black strobe group and has had his music used on a number of films such as the wolf of wall street. as such, from experimental pop to death metal, electro to soundtracks, he has done it all. now he returns to his good friends at zone music for another sterling ep.

your silent faces second release – the first on his own label tethys records – continues the deep, brooding techno trajectory set by his first track on fiedeltwo, a place where arms bend backwards. title track red rain is urgent yet considered: subtle acid lines swirl and build against bright defined percussion while the bassline builds towards infinity. it reveals ysf’s inspirations from motorik music, early industrial bands like nitzer ebb and deep techno heroes including sandwell district and rrose.kleinian transform takes techno to a place where georgio moroder meets front 242 and basic channel, creating robotic space-tracks with dub disco melodies, insistent bassline and mighty crescendos. its a late night dancefloor track influenced by dj hell and francois k, but equally by coil and new order. scorched earth closes the red rain ep with a post–apocalyptic melancholy, a soundscape which nods to kraftwerk and boards of canada. this is the track ysf wants you to hear at the end of times, recalling the blistering winds of post-nuclear fallout: darkly spacious, with a questioning melody. the ep was mastered by keith tenniswood at curvepusher.

lizards are lee forster (1/3 last waltz) and james hadfield (the mainstay of the elizabeth collective). taking over a full side, and clocking in at over 9 minutes, anthemic understatement is a very difficult trick to pull of, but the deepness of feel here, coupled with the restraint shown in rhythm and melody, allows the track space to ebb, flow and truly get under the skin of the listener. it s one of those rare tracks that are as equally beautiful as they are danceable international track lives up to it s name, seeing the north eastern english producers channel the japanese take on the balearic sound as heard in productions by artists such as cosmes.

to celebrate record store day 2016, claremont 56 is proud to present something rather special – a killer single-sided release whose origins are shrouded in mystery. “tropic of capricorn” arrived at c56 hq with little or no information. while its’ humid sound effects and glistening, unfurling melodies evoke hazy memories of mediterranean sunsets and adriatic sunrises, the track’s creators live east of ukraine, in the colder surrounds of the russia. regardless of who made it, you’ll struggle to find a single that’s quite as warm, tactile and seductively groovy. built around a hypnotic, slo-mo groove, “tropic of capricorn” soothes and sedates from start to finish. its’ ingredients are relatively sparse – think gently undulating beats, toasty chords and an electric harp that gently ebb and flow like the waters of a mountain stream – but the results are nothing less than stunning.

terence fixmer his known in the late 90s , early 2000s as the creator of the tbm, described as techno body music. a mixture of the ebm soundscape with the modernity of techno. his muscle machine album (including tracks lile electrostatic, body pressure) released in 2001 became a reference of the genre. in 2003, musician terence fixmer and legendary singer from cultissism band nitzer ebb, douglas j mccarthy embarked on a project that spearheaded the fusion of techno and ebm. they named it fixmer/mccarthy and they were the precursor to a new breed of techno artists that manage to traverse between an array of scene specific genres without being tied to any. since releasing their first album, >between the devil<, in 2003 terence and douglas have ridden the line between pure techno and the recognizable song structure of classic electronic music and ebm. now, with over 13 years working together for this project and playing around the world, they return to their signature raw sound and delivery. >so many lies< is quintessential and brooding techno, while the instinct mix epitomizes their ability to craft a catchy bubbling baseline whilst all the while dispatching cold steel aggression.

hamburg based hafendisko has been re- sponsible for some incredible output over the last few years, and are noted for their judici- ous selection of remixers. this vinyl only release confrms the fact - a selection of four shimmering remixes of hafendisko material including a new remix by smallville s julius steinhoff which is exclu- sive to this vinyl release

the ep starts with the german vocalized protest song -uberall polizei, nirgendwo gerechtigkeit-, an ebm inspired track which reminds us of the early 80s belgium artists like the neon judgement and nitzer ebb. on the flip the riot continues with -kriegdienstverweigerer-, a hypnotic neo-electronic jam with rattling synths, psychedelic baselines and a repetitive robotic vocoder on top. the ep ends with the title track -unify-, a deep cold cinematic floor burner.

after his first ep for l.i.e.s. last year, tzusing is back with his impeccably produced style of industrial and ebm influenced machine grinding cuts.
the tracks on this ep represent the climate of clubbing yesteryear when it was normal for djs to play such things as ministry, front 242, or nitzer ebb next to a disco track next to a breakbeat track and so forth and to say these tracks could be heard somewhere like medusas would not be off base. driving, engaging and downright gnarly we can only hope these sounds foreshadow things opening back up on the floor as time pushs forward.

emotional relish welcome in their second ep of 2013 with some solo work from scott fraser after a previous collaboration with headman and nitzer ebb vocalist douglas mccarthy. the light sleeper ep pairs two trademark fraser cuts with remixes from the aforementioned relish boss and fellow weatherall acolyte timothy j fairplay. a drab bassline wades *paraphase mine* into the murkier exclaves of synthy territory, allowing headman to lighten the mood by adding some tonal difference in his mix. fraser sets his arpeggios to flutter and bounce in *centreville lapse* with marching snares set to a severed heads styled reverb. fairplay does away with the tracks nosier components, demystifying frasers original for a warmer, eat petting remix.

one of figures most prolific artists, a.mochi offers up his first ever ep for figure spc, with 2 especially subterranean and highly charged tracks. mochi, who last year released his outstanding >primordial soup< lp on figure, continues to tread the line between functional club techno, and post-apocalyptic mechanical soundtracks. the well-defined a side burner, >riff< charges along with textured, woody percussion at its heart, and mochis trademark white noise ensemble pushing the high frequencies. a reduced, classically minimalist work, the track relies on just a handful of elements to induce a real fever on the dancefloor. following closely in its footsteps is >sunset<, a deeper cut with hi-tech atmospheres and intricate percussion at its core. metallic synths surge under mochis wall of bass, and the straight-ahead ebb of the sharp hats and claps edge this monster into even darker zones.

spring toy is an elegant a-side crafted with classic house influences in mind. meandering casually before beginning its ascent into deepspace territory, detroit styled synth lines and intricate melodies hang above a funky undertone which hooks from the off. continuing its cosmic trajectory, the ep’s b-sides set their coordinates into dub techno regions. lindberg’s quirky astral synths and futuristic soundscape trigger a dream-like state…think sci-fi beams and interplanetary navigation and you’re half way there. shudder is a more up-tempo sonic excursion, propelled by its galloping techno rhythms. the ebb and flow of trippy pads and crystalline waves play to the senses.
