by the 1970s studio one and clement ‘sir coxsone’ dodd had already proved himself to be the defining force in reggae for almost two decades. from running the downbeat sound system on the lawns and yards of kingston in the late 1950s to opening studio one at 13 brentford road at the start of the 1960s, ushering in ska and rocksteady and establishing the careers of most of jamaica’s artists – everyone from bob marley and the wailers, ken boothe, toots and the maytals, the skatalites, jackie mittoo and more – clement dodd had until this point dominated the jamaican musical world.

since the beginning we can see an evolution in jose ricos music. his sound is now more powerful than ever and the structure of his tracks have gained in complexity. the rhythms of his tracks, highly influenced by chicago house and detroit in his earlier releases, now are looking at the european 90 s electronica and dub music, slowing down (even more) the tempo. we can say that the his last releases on into the the deep and off minor are probably his best works and most mature, so far. de&#769,,ja&#768,, vu, the 11th downbeat installment, continues to explore this route. here we find four emotional and spacey tracks, made by old synths and samplers which takes us back to the early 90 s.

supreme downbeat coolness on fasaan. after a two year hiatus, fasaan returns with an ep from the local one-man-band that is inre kretsen grupp. gems of carefully melted down new wave, dub, aor and boogie sit confidently together on this ep that makes the debut of keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist martin blomberg.

it s been around three years since jpattersson opened up a whole new horizon of formerly unheard possibilities between the worlds of dub and techno. a lot has been happening ever since, and that’s very noticeable on his second album. it still has all the signature elements of jpattersson: there s his dreamy, virtuous trumpet play and his witty vocals, there s his dubby delays and heavyweight beats which often line up in a downbeat rhythm. however, besides his fanfares there s now also many folks, many musical friends who contribute to the vibe of this album. there s a track with berlin mc longfingah, latin-flavoured rhythms from polish reggae and dancehall producer dreadsquad as well as a stylistically wide range of remixes that reflect the symbiotic cooperation and mutual inspiration of these last years.

phuture-t dials up dub and drumfunk from the samples of greenleaf’s new orleans influenced track, forward motion. the beats are more broken and the effect delays are longer. the signature interview recording has been chopped and used as downbeats on the progression changes.
with melodic and rolling percussion, earl grey creates a cheerful vibe to start the ominous maze remix. the intro leads straight into the body of the track when the contrabass becomes the dominant instrument making the tone tougher. the drum breaks transition through several change ups and syncopated edits.
metro gives mhc a new treatment with extra field recordings and an extended break down. the jungle influence is stronger with bigger, funkier subs. classic break beats are layered with sound effects and noises all supporting the main rhythm of the bassline.
