3am spares is a new collection of australian electronic dance music compiled andras and instant peterson that encompasses the darker sounds and later nights of the 1990s and beyond. following on from forerunner compilation midnite spares, this double lp draws from local 12? releases, cdrs and the archives of community radio station 3rrr fm to make a diverse and pumping scene audible once more.

wonderfully spaced out, subtly pulsating classic chill-out & ambient techno schooled album (download card included)

that summer i developed somewhat of an obsession with tonto’s expanding head band after having seen them perform at the big chill festival that year. the music blew my mind. later upon my return to civilisation and the ensuing research which then began in earnest i became as much blown away by the enormous t.o.n.t.o. (the original new timbral orchestra) modular synthesizer that had created the music as i was by the music itself. built in the early 70s, it s still the largest synthesizer around today. with the live show still resonating in my head i tracked down everything tonto had ever recorded. one of these tracks was an obscure outtake from the time t.o.n.t.o.’s creators, malcolm cecil and robert margouleff, were producing and engineering for stevie wonder in the ‘70s(https://youtu.be/wuaszff7yq0). the track, bittersweet, only ever appeared on a highly limited self-released cd put together to coincide with their appearance at the big chill. consequently i featured it on a few mixes i did over the years and invariably i’d be asked “what’s that track?” by those with an ear for something unique. and invariably these same people, many of them djs, would turn away disgruntled when i informed them it was cd only. although i didn t know it at the time, the seed was definitely sown for this vinyl compilation that you now hold in your hands.

in a short space of time prodigious dutch producer pascal benjamin has built up a catalogue of ear-snagging minimal house confections for labels like welt, norse projekt, algorhythmic and botanic minds. now hes hitting the big time with this 12inch on the mighty slapfunk, and hes packing just the kind of chunky, swinging but ultimately lean jams they love. out of line keeps things focused on the drums, with just some sub bass and microscopic threads of sonic matter in between. to goodto be who? is equally stripped down, but decidedly more wriggly in its make up, and then finest hour kicks off the b-side with some fatter beats and a more prominent bass line. lagrange point finishes the ep off with some subliminal bleeps and tones pinging in between the wafer thin percussive pulses.

with the celebrated return of dr. octagon (dan the automator, kool keith and dj qbert) in 2017 including their first-ever live performances fans are sure to keep gobbling up the space weirdness that first surfaced more than 20 years ago. get on down presents a unique picture disc, featuring the original octagon album artwork by the legendary artist pushead. the infamous doctor’s head and lower torso reach above and below the actual 45 rpm playing surface, as if trying to escape their two-dimensional status. on the a-side is a brand-new dr. octagon song, “octagon octagon,” which picks up where the original energy left off. it’s a dark and grooving glimpse into keith’s rubberband mind, jumping abstractly from line to line, chock full of equal partscharisma and dementia. on the flip is the song for which the group is most well-known, “blue flowers.” the version presented here is the amazing “prince paul’s so beautiful” remix, which first appeared on a mo wax 12” in the uk in late 1996. it was the first meeting of the two great production minds from different eras – dan the automator and prince paul would go on to collaborate many more times over the next decade, most notably as the group handsome boy modeling school. this is another great trophy for any self-respecting kool keith and dan the automator fan, combining the old and the new in triumphant fashion.

home recorded above a lawyers office and next door to a brothel, the retrospective is lead by the earth shattering digi stepper rock steady. originally intended for an abandoned dub album, rock steady and fantasy dub were saved from the cutting room floor by australian cd-only compilations on creative vibes and vital collective clan analogue, while green river was never released. now demanding wider appreciation, the dubs finally find union with green man’s new york hip hop/dancehall style, lifted from his second solo album the blue hour vol. 3: deep blue. humbly excelling in all electronic forms, rantzen helped guide techno-rave duo itch-e & scratch-e through the 90s with paul mac. winning the inaugural best dance release category at the 1995 aria awards, mac thanked all of sydneys ecstasy dealers, without whom this award would not be possible, while rantzen stayed at home. the two would also operate incognito as boo boo & mace and screensaver, often collaborating on looney dubs with sheriff lindo - the master of seismic shocks down under. rantzens earliest work stretches back to pelican daughters, an ensemble who proliferated industrial-leaning ambient and tape loop experiments

following a joint live performance in 2016, butter sessions present the latest collaborative effort from albrecht la brooy (analogue attic) & sleep d (butter sessions). this ep sees al & sd blend their respective styles in a stimulating way. from 50 begins the ep with steady 909 grooves and a subtle oscillating acid bass that builds into another dimension. hotham breaks the pace with atmospheric space leads looking down on a mountain of kick drums. banksia is the most psychedelic of the four, planting seeds of heavily resonating synths atop of floating drum rhythms and warm melodies. lastly, sleeping patterns takes it down a few notches into a daydream of flute-like synths and distant nostalgic vocals.

figure 86 finds the label’s headmaster revisiting a dormant classic from 2005, delivering two extended excursions that pick up on the lunatic vibe instilled by the original while each mix provides for a uniquely new experience. sitting on the record’s a-side is the hardspace mix, a sparse and bone dry rhythmic affair, built around the originals characteristic cut-up vocal sample. a hammering thump carries along the track relentlessly, the air of oppression created only amplified by a heavy assault of clangig claps. the digital bundle comes with an even more stripped-back hardspace tool version, making it an excellent surprise to throw in and out of mixes. on the flip faki takes opportunity to show us one of his lesser known sides, taking time to gently develop this deepspace mix into a meandering meditative journey. trading in the vocal for a spaced-out synth opens the track up for the shifting tribal drums to truly work their magic and makes this piece of music feel equally mysterious as it sways with cosmic energy.

midnite spares, australian music devotees andrás and instant peterson hold a candle to overlooked avant-pop and electronic works by antipodean artists and outsiders working through the 80s and 90s. through co-presenting weekly radio show strange holiday, the duo slowly upturned their locale for inspiration - archives, country bookstores, private collections and convenience stores, searching for a place to anchor their own identities in the oceans of the island continent. the 10 tracks acknowledge a minor history, passed on via a network of friends, friends of friends, the libraries of radio station 3rrr and more often than not, the artists themselves. renowned mixed media artist maria kozic enters with the mysterious downbeat of trust me, her partner philip brophy responsible for digital and analogue sonic construction. a recurring character in andrás and instant peterson’s investigations, brophy reappears with a score piece from his divisive feature film salt, saliva, sperm and sweat, recorded as ??? few would challenge the claim that the 1960s and 70s have been the most fertile two decades in the history of popular music ever - a period which, regardless of genre, laid the foundations for everything that has followed. what is more, this period was so fertile that the speed with which tastes changed left a colossal amount of incredible music to gather dust - perhaps most famously a profusion of funk, soul and jazz. it was a musical legacy that lay mouldering until the rise of sampling in late 80s hip-hop precipitated a mad scramble for lost crates and suddenly, the music that became known as rare groove - for obvious reasons (it was rare and very groovy) - experienced a phoenix-like rebirth. a quarter of a century on and a million funk, soul, jazz-funk and rare groove compilations, re-presses and re-releases later, you d think that cupboard was bare and yet, even now, there are gems to be found. pt is re-releasing the rarest of cuts that often were originally only limited runs or private pressings and new compilation down & wired is just such a collection. always soulful, this features everything from mod groovers and northern stompers, to funky bumps and latin heaters. yet while the quality of all cuts is immediately apparent, only one of the eleven has ever been previously been compiled because when pt do rare, they dont mess around. in fact, if these tracks were steaks they d still be walking around eating grass.

invisible, inc now brings the aptly named spacerocks into the fold with the release of a 6- track ep that comes storming in from the outer reaches of a galaxy light years away (or just decades past?) into the earpiece of your unwashed spacesuit. it s hard to pinpoint what genre this actually fits into but if you imagine vapourspace s gravitational arch of 10 as interpreted by vangelis with drum programming by nitzer ebb you d be getting reasonably close. other influences may well include cluster, conrad schnitzler, chris & cosey to name a few, while comparisons can be made to contemporaries like solyst, musiccargo, barnt and secret circuit. spacerocks is a solo offshoot project from higamos hogamos main man steve webster (also fort lauderdale, the black neon, memphis industries, dc recordings). the project sees steve ditch his band and strip things down to his modular, vintage and custom-built synthesizer set up alongside equally rare and vintage analogue drum machines, sequencers and fx units.
