as we reach our 30th release on the label, animal farm is proud to present stephanie sykes’ first solo ep since 2016’s effort on prodigal son. those two years have seen her presence in the techno scene explode, with a flurry of appearances across europe - our own animal farm night in glasgow among them + residencies at tbilisi’s khidi and the infamous after hours jaded crew in london, corsica studios.

this is the london based producer s long-awaited ep after releasing on past infinite machine & jbf compilations. lucky for us he has been honing his jagged and emotive take on bass & techno music and created a debut that is a pleasant diversion from structural norms. bristolian heavyweight hodge swoops in for the finale, reworking »lucid« into a dark and ominous techno-stomper.

as noted on another release (see ropin), cornell campbell has enjoyed one of the longest-running careers of any jamaican singer, and he is blessed with a readily identifiable style too. he began his career for clement ‘sir coxsone’ dodd in 1956, when rhythm and blues held sway in jamaica, and later cut some ska songs for king edwards. he then passed through the sensations in the rock steady phase and worked as a solo singer at treasure isle, before returning to studio one with the eternals, scoring huge hits such as ‘stars’ and ‘queen of the minstrel’ as the 60s gave way to the 70s. his greatest phase of popularity was them brokered by hit-making producer bunny lee, who kept him on top right through the 1970s and into the 80s. the 1975 album dance in a greenwich farm was first issued on the grounation label in the uk. along with a re-working of ‘stars’ re-titled ‘the sun,’ a re-working of ‘queen of the minstrel’ as ‘girl of my dreams’ and the sound system opus that is the title track, the album has the boastful ‘conquering gorgon’ and a number of keenly-observed cover tunes, including a cut of the gaylads’ ‘no good girl,’ a version of the heptones’ ‘why did you leave me’ and a killer cut of the uniques’ ‘watch this sound’ (based on ‘for what it’s worth’ by buffalo springfield).

afr welcome uk based producer tomas rubeck for their 4th release with the fm ep. rubeck serves up 2 slices of dub infused deep techno, laden with atmospherically processed field recordings, crisp beats and sub aquatic synthesis. two special remixes are also included which are an amalgamation of both tracks. spanish duo exium are first up who take things down a more trippy, hypnotic road, followed by animal farms quail whos pulsing, broken beat effort further deepens the ep. all tracks mastered by conor dalton @ glowcast mastering.

afr return after a summer break with 3 more slices of techno, this time from manchurian producer, setaoc mass (sam coates) backed with a fantastic remix from argentinean, jonas kopp. a relative newcomer to the scene, sam has carved a distinct sound. rough rhythms are permeated with dub infected synth hooks and tough percussive workouts. definitely a rawness crafted in the uk. shrinked.

incl piemont rmx!! after the overwhelming initial outing by amir (bodymusic one) on suchtreflex, the fresh new hamburgian label signed none other than german minimal act lars wickinger, who already had a bunch of mind-blowing releases on reference labels like traum, opossum and liebe datail. lars, who describes his musical style as techno with a spirit from minimal and house, produced 2 extraordinary and modern sounding tech house tunes, which will definitely cause huge waves of response - so watch out! for even more musical variety, each with 2 remixes were added: the hamburg based producer duo piemont (mbf, hi freaks) reinterpreted >spooky farm< on the a1 and the very talented el carlitto (artminimal) of belgium remixed the flipside >quiche<!

big with todd terje, munk, danny wang , after his releases on players paradise and dirt crew, the young italian dj marcello giordani shares with us his love for the boogie/funk/italo disco once again! two tracks on this >cosmic communications< e.p.: >bronx dogs< is an 83s flavoured house/boogie track with a moog bassline and fm synth sounds in a metro area mood. >alice< is a deep italo track with an intense arpeggio and live drums, inspired by the cosmic sound of the early 80s - the real underground movement at that time in italy. a timeless piece of cosmic sound!

sleazy mcqueen and the nasty fruits make their boogie farm debut with an e.p. full of tripped out detroit-influenced disco-funk! on the a-side we have the detroit influenced >neurotic city<. it s smooth pads and eerie percussives blend well with the breathing bass line and chaotic melody making it the most clubby track of the release. on the inside, we find >things i do for you<, a heady deep house workout that will appeal to fans of late night debauchery! we ve been told that it was written late at night after a few bottles of wine, when sleazy mcqueen woke up the next day, there it was on his desk top. we think he should get drunk every night if this is the result! on the flip its remix time courtesy of one of the hottest guys and label at the moment: philip lauer and brontosaurus! the >brontosaurus< remix of >gimme a kiss<, with its smooth running bass line and great pulsating rhythms keeps a good disco vibe reminiscent of kano! boogie on!
