the ken boothe masterpiece from 1978 gets the long overdue remastered re-issue. -got to get away- was produced by phil pratt, features additional deejay vocals by jah walton (aka joseph cotton) and has extensive sleeve notes. packaged in the original sleeve design by anthony nero it is now available for the first time on cd and the high collectable lp-vinyl is here in a great 180 gram edition with leaflet including credits and linernotes.

funkadelic have created an enduring legacy, and the power of their impact is visceral in detroit. their records not only played with genre, but possessed a diabolical sense of humour that led to music domination by the late 70s with parliament, funkadelic, parlet, bootsy’s rubber band and the brides of funkenstein all releasing albums the same year for two years in a row. the music itself is beyond stereotype, but equally huge is that they were a black band not allowing themselves to be limited by anyone else’s notions of who they could be, having a massive impact on the next generation of detroit music, detroit techno. but more than just techno, it is a freedom of thinking that extends beyond boxes, so we included all sorts of today s generation of detroit musicians and producers to show the wide range of music that was funkadelic and how these ideas are still contemporary, they endure and inspire.

some songs comes along that you seem to know the moment you hear it, even though its for the first time. in the case of spark the universe it had exactly that impact. a mixture of late-60s psychedelic homage, early 80s new wave, white boy soul, plus a good dose of dub, all wrapped around a killer hook and super tight production and a hit was surely made.

electronic pop act penelope is the second release on fellow swede pjotr’s label. backed up by remixes from roger 23 and physical therapy, the band offers three dystopian pop songs spanning from futuristic, villainous r&b to trance filled breakbeat ending with a guitar based ballad - all songs being infected by penelope’s machiavellian lusting vocals.
roger 23 delivers two versions of the title track, the first a forceful chi-town beat adventure with raw outer space chords (including full original vox), the second a reduced effective piercing dub straight from the outer sphere. physical therapy closes with a psychedelic version of “rattlesnake” built around hard-hitting tribal drums.

by the 1970s studio one and clement ‘sir coxsone’ dodd had already proved himself to be the defining force in reggae for almost two decades. from running the downbeat sound system on the lawns and yards of kingston in the late 1950s to opening studio one at 13 brentford road at the start of the 1960s, ushering in ska and rocksteady and establishing the careers of most of jamaica’s artists – everyone from bob marley and the wailers, ken boothe, toots and the maytals, the skatalites, jackie mittoo and more – clement dodd had until this point dominated the jamaican musical world.

in a new transatlantic partnership, uk label secret reels and washington, dc imprint better listen records have teamed up for a run of collaborative records. the joint brand, secret listen, combines the labels in sound as well as in name. imagine the lush, pensive and moody deep house tones of secret reels joining with the sample-heavy disco soul leanings of blr. secret listen vol. 1 takes two artists each from both rosters for the first amalgamation. the -secret side- hosting english producers harry wolfman and chocky, while the listen side invites sune and vitamin d of high hat appreciation society and the newly founded honey butter records to the affair. it s a v/a release with a variety of offerings and flavours. wolfmans floozy sits first in the record as a bright and whimsical flute-led morsel, while chockys inner disco is a cerebral, loopy cut. on the flip, sune provides some exquisite rhodes action in his groovy midtempo effort, glidin, and his swedish compatriot closes out the affair with the bittersweet lately.

the must have status of joey negros -remixed with love series has been firmly cemented with both dj and home listening disco lovers since the release of the first two volumes. since the last release jn has been working hard on sourcing more disco multitrack tapes and producing new remixes while the zr team have been equally dedicated to clearing and licensing these new versions. the enduringly popular mtume/lucas produced phyllis hyman soul classic you know how to love me gets a new makeover that reworks the original elements into a more dramatic version with many peaks and troughs, stretching it out to over 10 minutes. even for those love the original this new mix gives a favourite song a fresh new perspective and reason to be played again. motown sounds philly style instrumental bad mouthin was an underground hit on dance floors in new york, london and chicago from the late 70s onwards. it was also famously sampled in bob sinclar s no 1 gym tonic. the original is a pretty dense, everything in all the way through style production, whereas the jn mix opens things up in a bit with more room for the individual parts to be heard. the end result is an extremely energetic bassline driven disco cut that works super well on the dancefloor.

hugo capablanca may be best known for his more disco-minded output from his time on gomma records, but increasingly his scattered output and his label have been reaching towards more abrasive material. nothing will prepare you for the confrontational nature of this daring, no label transmission. the artwork alone is enough to challenge the senses, while the opening track is a metallic drone that gives way to the distended mutant beats of top less. guy debord is no less cut throat in delivering a disco punish remix of lap dance on the b side, all deconstructed groove and guttural noise, and then dance less rounds the record off with another excursion into unsettling, heavily processed noise.

jad & the sends off the ladyboy (fka jad & the ladyboy) and has a going away party to celebrate. the party starts off with some sad cries (it’s always sad saying goodbye), then the yeah band starts playing to take peoples minds off their sadness, after their afrocentric set the guy who always has the discogs window open and 7 inch adapters in his pockets jumps up and plays a disco dancefloor tool designed to tease but please. now that everyone s warmed up and ready for it, the next dj drops some underground real shit which even gets a nod from the high brow dj squad in the corner. the twelve people there lose their shit. great night had by all.

forever faithfully mining the past to keep your shelves stocked with gems that might have otherwise been consigned to history, emotional rescue turn their attention towards carl & carol jacobs cult slice of early house music, and what a treat it is. -yonge street jam band- comes in the form of two mixes that serve as impeccable examples of late 80s club music in all its culture spanning glory. the playful sample slicing and triggering of the second mix is the winner, although the vocals on the original version are equally on point if you want a little more soul in the mix. jonny 5 then steps up on the flip for a bold but measured re-rub that stretches the vibe out for nine minutes of perfect party fodder.

half baked resident greg brockmann teams up with good friend odd soul under the moniker oddmann to present their first release on half baked records. bringing three tracks of dark, driving but groovy minimal techno, the boys are bringing a new flavour to the half baked label. these two have really been working hard in the studio and that is evident across the release as they provide something for those dimly lit dancefloors with big sound. this is some serious heads-down trippy music to lose yourself within!
