n8noface was the vocalist for underground synth-punk legends crimekillz. he is the younger brother of tucson-bred modern boogie rocket man zackey force funk, both now residing in long beach, ca.in 2017, hit+run released n8’s visceral debut album stories of those, as well as demos and demons vol. 1, a ten-track collection of home demos recorded between 2015-2016. on dia de los muertos 2017, noface also unleashed the first single from his forthcoming new album true story, the haunting double a-side lathe cut “idgaf / say goodbye.”

lobster theremin present another mind-bending lp this time the brainchild of italian producer and epic talent kreggo. using a newly established moniker for this very special project, kreggo is better known for his work as g-23, dj groov and his cult secret rave project. from his small starship studio in mongrando, italy he weaves stories and tales from hued memories and faded dreams. whirling from the hills and condensing down the green mountainsides into the vibrant forest, coasting the roof of his hardware strewn lab.

there are west coast classics, and then there is music to driveby, the third lp from the group that birthed mc eiht: compton’s most wanted. although the group started in the late ‘80s with multiple mcs (including tha chill and boom bam), by 1992 eiht as pulling the group’s vocal weight – supported by dj mike t on turntables and production – and even producing and co-producing tracks. music to driveby might lack beats-per-minute variety, but to fans that’s not a bad thing. across the board, this is mid-tempo, super deep, funky hip-hop, made for cars creeping along boulevards across the west and south, and it’s about as good as it gets for such purposes. just about filler-free, the album struts intensely and with purpose, as eiht throws tales of cali street life at fans for an hour straight, almost without a break. this solo marathon is given a respite only once, with scarface’s guest spot on “n 2 deep,” an excellent hood roller supported by a soulful guitar lick sampled from lyn collins’ “do your thing.” elsewhere, eiht rolls alone and intensely, on cuts like the classic mash single “hood took me under”, the album’s second single and tim dog attack “who’s fu**ing who?”, the hometown big-up “compton 4 life”, and hustle tales like “jack mode” and “i gots to get over.” after this album, eiht released more classics under his own name, and with similar fan worship. it was the continuation of a legendary career and music to driveby still ranks high on anyone’s “west coast legends” playlist.

the moscow duo is back with an other dose of hunted industrial techno punches. from a navy fit republic of love!

ditongo is telling tales through samples and loops in these two tracks. divided into two chapters each (spot the ghost-marker on the vinyl), he digs deep into samba for the first time with “berimbau”, giving the leading role to a hypnotic organ, while the second track “you know nothing” goes back to funk, dominated by a fat bassline.

next up on late night burners we have four warm cuts by roman coskun. with the -feels like forever ep- he showcases his own personal brand of wayward, but elegant deep house.
the title track is deep, but very functional, and clearly built on the underpinnings of classic deep house, while remaining fresh at the same time. then it s time for -sunwards-, blending acidic dreaminess with a lock-tight groove. on the b1, -steps- reminds us of mediterranean summers, with its warm pads and floaty steel drums, and finally, on -tales from the reef- the gifted 92 spacedrum orchestra joins in for a raw, yet delicate late-night club joint.

london band tomaga are back with their fourth release under the hands in the dark banner: memory in vivo exposure. the 12inch ep consists of four original tracks and yet another new musical evolution for the duo. whilst they still use complex layering and harmonic polyrhythms in developing their original approach, this time the sonic tales they have shared are much more cinematic and dreamlike. these visions are locked up into emotionally charged loops to convey the sensation of a dream in which half remembered things become new zones of feeling.

“another way of falling apart” aims to build a wider audience for singular music adorer, martin jensen, a cosmopolitan copenhagen-born artist whose music follows an emotional route that meanders back ultimately to analogue and electronica inspirations of myriad treasurable kinds. this incursion into lp territory follows a decade or more of jensen s passionate engagement with music as the creative force behind singles on static caravan, and as the co-founder of the label second language (until 2014), for which he was the wings behind the celebrated “music and migration” series in support of “birdlife international”. he has also remixed colleen, dollboy, and ellis island sound.

lagaffe tales co-founder jónbjörn drops four tracks on icelands falk records beat driven sub-label, falk disks. since 2008 falk (fuck art lets kill) has become a creative hub for icelandic and international artists involved in experimental and electronic music, spanning noise rock through to power electronics, underground hip-hop to diy techno and electro. 2017 saw falk continue with releases from icelandic hip-hop producer lord pusswhip, techno/electro producer thizone and canadian industrial techno musician /&#991,,,/huren/&#991,,,/. berlin based icelandic producer jónbjörn, known for curating reykjavík record label lagaffe tales – one of the main pillars in the icelandic house scene – now joins falks’ club focused sub-imprint with a robust four tracker. moving away from the deep house sound hes renowned for towards a darker and leaner night time aesthetic, amsiak inaugurates the release with an infectious electro groove as gurgling pings and acidic clangs and drones are liberally dropped throughout the track. aspekte is a spacious track with blown-out bass sounds that morph and glide across a tempered, slow burning planar rhythm. on the flip, jonbjörn goes for a harder techno sound influenced by his relocation to berlin. sunnudagskaffi is a bendy, 4/4 roller that contains hidden grooves below the basslines and the acid pings that wouldnt be out of place on a livity sound release. meanwhile, holy b is pure warehouse creeper techno, complete with machinic tones and the atmospherics of sweat and grime on dungeon brick walls.
