first time reissue of the very first dub lp released in nyc, 1975! part of the genesis of the jah life label! first time reissue of kaya dub from 1975, noted as the first ever proper dub lp pressed and released in new york city. the eponymous lp is among the first set of releases on the kaya label. this imprint was the first to showcase the partnership of percy chin and hyman jah life wright as producers and cornerstones of the burgeoning nyc reggae scene of the day. though these tracks originate from jamaica thru a connection with pat jah lloyd francis and have also been released elsewhere, this is none the less a killer selection of dubs from tubby s and randys. in sound and visuals, kaya dub serves as a fantastic snapshot of the music and vibes of roots reggae in the mid 70s, among the best dub lp s of its time.

official re-issue of bermudian disco record! 1000 copies initial pressing. big tip! in 1981, bermudian band paradise recorded sizzlin hot, a flawless album of original material in the disco, boogie and aor style. producer, writer and pianist grant williams formed several bands before becoming the fourth member of paradise, alongside bassist wincy woolridge, drummer ronnie lopes and singer june ventzos whose voice commands the album. for five years, the group regularly performed in hotels before hitting the local z.b.m. studios to record their sole album. sizzlin hot is inspired by the sound of earth, wind & fire. the album delivers several blistering tracks that could have been huge club anthems if the record had been promoted outside of bermuda. since bermuda is a fairly remote island, its no wonder that paradise remains virtually unknown to this day. it is all the more reason why this album stands-out and has universal appeal though it was only ever intended as a local thing as grant williams says.

over the past three years melbournes albrecht la brooy have patiently cultivated their own space within australias prolific electronic music scene. deeply rooted in technos ambient influences, the duo improvise their compositions with an overarching approach that breaks away from techno s conventional presentation. recorded in one take from beginning to end, escape velocity sees albrecht la brooy take on the voyage aesthetic and principles to create a twenty five minute odyssey spanning four passages, to be played continuously across the 12inch medium. utilising both sparse, drifting ambient palettes and driving, machine-led rhythms, escape velocity is a pensively uplifting account of future travels through space and the ninth installment to the voyage catalogue. both sides of the vinyl are cut as continuous sides.

transmitting crucial beats from burlington, the vermont-based producers es-k and loupo have crafted a smooth, introspective long-player for the cold busted label titled symbiosis. holland-born es-k (essential knowledge) is known for his monthly spontaneous grooves series (where a collection of tracks are created in one sitting) and his vital 2016 album passages. fellow vt rhythm- wrangler loupo is also on the rise, with a recent album on the melody soul label named good company. this new collaborative release, symbiosis, is a brilliant meeting-of-the-minds, blending the styles of these two talents over the course of ten tracks. the result is deep and meaningful as well as groovy and headz approved, showcasing the duos penchant for envelope pushing in terms of atmosphere, melody, and rhythm.

one of the more unsung talents that came out of the gang starr foundation was the brooklyn-based duo group home, consisting of mcs lil dap and melachi the nutcracker. dap was first showcased on the gang starr posse cut “i’m the man,” on 1992’s daily operation, melachi appeared on “words from the nutcracker” from 1993’s hard to earn. the early group home song “so called friends” was also featured on 1993’s now-legendary gangstarr foundation sampler, which also gave the world jeru’s “come clean.” by 1995, dap and melachi had paid their dues and finally got their own full-length: livin’ proof. and it was everything that gang starr and any true school hip-hop fans could have wanted, produced almost entirely by dj premier (with two exceptions: “serious rap shit” helmed by guru himself, and “4 give my sins,” produced by jay-z mentor jaz-o (aka big jazz). beyond the album’s classic singles – “supa star,” “livin’ proof” and “suspended in time” – there are premier-overseen classics all over, including “the realness,” “inna citi life,” and “sacrifice.” in fact, many gang starr scholars agree that the beats on living proof are in the top 5 of all premier-produced albums – no small boast, but certainly hard to disprove.

this is my best album for sure, says todd. we cant be exactly sure on that one, all three albums from todd bodine have been great. forms however, is perhaps the most complex and mature album that the berlin producer and dj has accomplished to date. and its also out with us! todd has worked at full speed over the last six months to bring us this fine piece of work. as a dj playing around the world and as a producer in the highest ranks of consistency, todd bodine has constantly developed as an artist. releases and remixes on respected labels, and collaborations with various artists have made him an internationally popular electronic musician. in 2007 he finally began to perform as a live act, and what club would better fit todds new live premiere than the panorama bar in berlin!? todd shows with forms, his innate knowledge of the two sides of electronic dance music. this is a meeting of peaktime euphoria with the relaxing bliss of the hazy morning light. a meeting of hypnotic natural rhythms and driving cut-up sounds. todd can impress you with dancefloor bombs and also with his sophisticated sound visions. the sound of detroit would probably be the best comparison.

copenhagens music for dreams comes with yet another strong release - a double album of personal favourites compiled by jan schulte. according to all maps and witness accounts, germany does not officially have any tropical forests. this is of no concern to schulte however, who has unearthed many stunning examples of tropical drum music recorded there. perhaps the number of botanical gardens and palm houses in germany confused musicians into mistaking the climate, or maybe it was just a happy blend of escapism and multi-cultural integration within musical scenes that spawned such a curious output of undefinable tribal folk jazz. most of the tracks picked by schulte were released on small labels in the late 80 s. the musicians involved were mainly traditionally schooled, born and raised in germany. at that time to be interested in foreign folk music might have seemed a gimmick to some, what with the emerging -world music boom- already snowballing into the mainstream. but these songs, while they may be based on musical traditions from foreign lands, deal much more with introspection than exploitation. schulte himself points to his -general fascination for music that describes places where the artists have never been. songs about the jungle or the rainforest made by people that know the rainforest only from television and books. somehow i think you can hear their mythical imagination and fantasy in those tracks,- he explains....

for fans of the italian avant-garde, few names inspire the loyalty and devotion offered to the percussionist and composer lino capra vaccina - a perfect emblem of the country’s extraordinary movement of musical minimalism. he first gained note as a member of aktuala, a project which laid the groundwork for a entire generation of practitioners following in their wake - creating a hybrid of rock, avant-garde, and ancient musics, while incorporating a diverse number of sonic traditions from across the globe - african, middle eastern, indian, etc. vaccina’s career as composer has been marked by two distinct features, an incredibly high bar of quality and ambition, and a tragically slim amount of recorded output. following his departure from aktuala, he worked extensively with others - juri camisasca, franco battiato, etc, and within the short lived super group telaio magnetico, but his astounding solo efforts have been slow to emerge. in 1978 he released the legendary lp antico adagio, and wouldn’t be heard from again until 1992’s equally extraordinary l attesa. fortunately, over the last few years, the milan based imprint die schachtel, has embarked on a multifaceted project - reissuing vaccina’s hard to find lps for a new generation, as well as offering a range of stunning archival recording which had never before seen the light of day. their latest release, an lp entitled echi armonici da antico adagio, falls into the later category. it is nothing short of a momentous even

techno, disco, italo, electronics, house, library, cosmic and ambient frequencies - these are the bedrocks of the midnight drive ethos and sound. a label shining a light on overlooked or unheralded creations and respectfully reissuing them for the contemporary audience. a label that respects and understands the connection between these disparate and sometimes forgotten forms of musical expression and celebrates them. drive001 sees us step back to 1998 and into the hands of the duo of damon wild and mederic nebinger, recording together as blue maxx they quietly unleashed some of the finest futuristic widescreen techno and electro to emanate from nyc in the late 1990 s. utilising a small sub-label of wild s seminal techno imprint synewave called deja vous the pair embarked on a slew of ep s released over the space of a couple of years with private life being one of the last. across 3 tracks private life opens up a new sound world, from the driving, tool-like qualities of the a-side cut - all swinging drum programming, synth stabs and deranged metallic percussions to the deeper, more clandestine leanings of the b-side tracks, mining a more musical and electro infused vein, the whole ep stands out as something truly original. a hallmark of the blue maxx sound. this is the first time private life has been reissued, almost 20 years has passed and somehow wild and nebinger s style remains utterly fresh and contemporary. a truly rare and essential piece of hi-tech techno expression that could easily have been released this week. such is the quality on display within these grooves. remastered by curvepusher. artwork and design by atelier superplus.

all source material recorded in gran paradiso, july 2015 engineered at odd phasing and echoes, amsterdam nl photography bjnilsen bjnilsen is a composer and sound artist based in amsterdam. his work primarily focuses on the sounds of nature and how they affect humans. recent work has explored the urban acoustic realm and industrial geography in the arctic region of norway and russia. his original scores and soundtracks have featured in theatre, dance performances and film. celebrating 27 years as a recording artist massif trophies is the first solo release for editions mego. in 2015 he set off on a month long hiking trip in gran paradiso to explore the acoustic environments in the alpine landscape. drawn to the monotonous and physical effort that mountains and high altitudes contributes, this became one of the main inspirations for the album, reflecting upon the perception of the landscape during several hours of physical difficulty, let alone rapid weather changes, horizontal thunderstorms and rock avalanches. it is also about the scope of details and perception of the path and the myth of the mountain as the accursed or sacred place. the five pieces contains narratives based on experiences and recordings from the trip.

“bella l’amore”, is the second offering, and it shows a different side to blade s diverse productions. the track begins with a light break, airy efx, and chiming keys, that set the backdrop for this tight production. at the drop, the drums fill in nicely and the warm 808 bassline punch through the mix. overall, blade delivers big on this release, and will surely satisfy his fans with this slice of d&b heaven.
