modelmaker is a new london label from the collective minds of dan berkson and james what. the esteemed house duo has long been garnishing a range of international imprints with their inventive analogue house and techno sounds, but now they are focussing on their own outlet. initially launching with a couple of self penned eps, release number three will be the pair s long-time-in-the-making debut album, and after that a considered selection of other talents will join the ranks as the label pushes on. always primarily focussed on machine made, texturally rich house and techno, each release will come with unique artwork based on works from what s great grandfather, conrad felixmuller, who was a well known german expressionist.

steve frisco, of serie limitee fame, brings us the latest bundle of hot tracks to hit wax classic in 2014. as the title suggests, steve takes us on a journey through low fidelity sounds and production techniques. think dark, moody, yet crunchy basement house tracks with inspiration taken from all over the u.s and the rest of the house world. it’s a generous offering as well. six whole dusty tunes for those diggers who are looking for something with a bit more range than another record of generic piano laden, house-by-numbers pieces that still seem to be flooding the record store shelves in 2014. the moods do vary from track to track, but they remain very reflective and almost melancholic at points. the title track, ‘adventure in lo-fi’, is the deepest of the lot with filtered chords, echoing claps and a sporadic kick pattern that often clears way for the track’s bass hits. now, compare that to ‘da brooklyn beat’. whilst the former had a distinct sunrise/sunset kind of feel to it, the latter is definitely more of a club affair. skippy snare hits and a strong organ lead the track on, and at the risk of utilizing very overused buzzwords such as ‘raw’ and ‘ruff’, this track, and the rest of the a-side for that matter, certainly captures that essence. stalwart wax classic fans will no doubt be picking this one up to add to their collection. however, i strongly recommend this ep as a jumping in point to the label for any newcomers out there

on this new 12 inch, we present 3 big names of the digging scene: tokyo matt from the otaku soundsystem originally based in hong-honk, and mori ra & asn from tokyo oyama edit, well know for their releases on curt jackson rotating soulss label. the 4 edits they are presenting are just out of this world. all very atmospherics, they are the ideal combination of space disco, balearic rock, jazz, pop and fusion. another ep to take very seriously.

at the 2014 sxsw festival in austin, texas, bacardi turned the movements of 100.000 wild bats into an exclusive music track. using bespoke motion tracking technology, the team used the swarming of the bats to trigger unique beats and mix the tracks tone and tempo as they flew. this limited vinyl pressing of 200 copies on 180 gram vinyl features three craig richards remixs of that track

rothmans is back with there 7th release and this time they pay homage to german playmaker paul breitner . the ep comes in the form of rising manchester producer ste spandex , fresh off the back of his remix of coyote our on rothmans 6 , and has been recorded 100% live on analogue eqiupment , not a computer in sight !!!! . the ep finds rothmans taking a slightly different and more up tempo vibe to it but still retains the psychadelic nu disco feel of many of there earlier releases. spandex has had a little help from his friends in the form of kickin pigeon and metrodome , both fresh out of the manchester underground. this is rothmans first all manchester release and sees them really cemeting the label in there surroundings.

make no mistake, for vault series 15 the doors have been flung open to welcome a new act to the fold. theres very little known about mistake made. no records or releases exist to date, but they have impressed vault chief subjected enough to have them join the sequestered berlin-based crew. and in sublime compliance with the vault series creed, this debut effort from the shadowy outfit presents yet another set of functioning and frill-free dancefloor material, complete with a rusted-through hue of its own. on the a-side >wrist< jumps straight in with marching intent, complete with fidgety hat work thats both anxious and infectious. then on the flip, >ricochet< opens with field recordings tossed into a stormy concoction of ticks, hats and fuzzy atmospherics, teamed up here with one of those basslines that will keep you glued to the floor. >indec< then concludes in signature vault series style an ominous, growling number rattled with alarm bells and screeching, clangorous detail. its one of those monstrous slow-burners that leaves you wounded yet longing for more. all in all, a rounded first release from a new techno tour de force. this isnt the last we will be hearing from mistake made.

umkhosi wokweshwama, the celebration of the first fruits among zulus and the sweet name of the first disc at big brothers. this young parisian collective focuses on storytelling, multimedia and smashing ! they feel good in the confusion of styles and the audacity of an approach. their aesthetic is complex because before mind they look for senses. this vinyl is a cycle, it was born in the spring. look at its front, its back, listen to its a-side, its b-side and enjoy the massive flavor of the summer. at that period, a year ago, big brothers was conceiving this baby.

roots go deep are a label devoted to releasing music by south african artists. since 2012 they ve released seven eps by names like d.nel, makhen gigga and label owners ofuren and fred buddah. now that they ve established themselves in the digital realm of music, roots go deep arrive on the physical medium with a split ep of deep and dubby sounds from ofuren and fred buddah. the two provide two collaborative tracks in -floral synergy- - a woozy house jam in line with mcde s raw cuts - and -do deejays dream of dancing sheep-, a sublime mix of subaqueous chords, chilled out drums and touch of acid. buddah just about goes ambient on his solo track -ragan- while ofuren keeps it heads down and uber-dub on -ripples through reflection-. roots go deep indeed.

hailing from somewhere in spain, mystic & quantum is a new label created to show stories of adventures, magic, science and they launch in quite auspicious fashion with an album length foray through analogue experimentation from one of englands finest dmx krew. one of numerous handles taken by edward upton, standing stones finds the dmx krew sound in particularly contemplative mood across a variety of tempos and can be viewed as an extension of the approach he took on last years reith tracks lp for rush hours no label. however whereas that release saw upton take inspiration from his surroundings on an austrian farm, standing stones draws its creative juices from the mysterious pillars of stone that have stood across western europe for centuries. the accompanying silk screened artwork - which is quite lovely - extends the theme. whether you engage conceptually or just focus on the music, this is another rewarding set from the master dmx krew!

stephan bodzin and marc romboy are very good friends. and this is maybe the main reason why they made a couple of tracks together which have become milestones of the discography of systematic recordings. you cannot really plan these things, so lets call it coincidence that both of them returned to the studio together after a break of four long years. and exactly at the point of time when the ep is finalized systematic turns 100 when it comes to the catalogue numbers. so lets celebrate their new output with this special picture disc!

hot city orchestra is a reformation of a band, which was originally formed in 1998. at the age of 17, arno völker (einzelkind) and simon birkenfeld became friends and started making drum and bass music together. they toured all over germany with their record label and had residencies at robert johnson in offenbach and tanzhaus west in frankfurt. after gaining years of experience within the breakbeat scene, arno went on to become einzelkind with releases on playhouse, cocoon, white and his own imprints la peña, jax and pressure traxx as well as worldwide dj gigs. simon was still focusing on his breakbeat career for another year, making an album with a uk drum and bass legend, but it was never released. he stopped making music and started focusing on his career in pr and marketing, where he mostly worked on music and art projects. during this time, the long-time friends arno and simon came up with the idea to launch the blog-network-project www.disco-very. net now, 16 years later, after making first beats together, the boys are back! a tiny bit older, much wiser, more handsome and around 50 bpm slower.

idjut boys started in early 90s, when house music was heading for the bubbly, wild excitement, and they have always been active in an underground scene which has been drawing the line at the mainstream. carrying on the tradition of house and disco, they have ever played an important role in forming the house and disco culture in uk, producing the intoxicating groove of funk and dub, which is the significant factor in house and disco.

nathan fake and wesley matsell are both producers best known for their releases on border community - nathan fake has been putting out psychedelic permutations on dance music since 2003 for the label, while matsell recently released the blissful total order of being ep for them earlier in 2014. cambria instruments is a new label venture from the pair, and for the first release they have teamed up for a split 12- of kaleidoscopic electronic sounds. nathan fake s contribution black drift starts things off, an initially inauspicious tripping beat gathering momentum and morphing into a far-out piece of fuzzy house underpinned by sunken low-end rumbles. it s the kind of brilliantly wide-eyed track we have come to expect from the producer. over on the flip, wesley matsell s bismuth is a more shadowy, moody affair, a tight techno rhythm holding things together while synths spin wildly. a highly expressive, lysergic trip and one of his finest productions to date. all in all, you couldn t hope for a stronger start from a new label.

belfast is slowly becoming a must stop destination for artists from all around the world and needless to say the young talent is beginning to flourish from this once torn city. titanic city aims to harness and nurture what they can from this citys talent of aspiring producers.

the prolific lord of the isles (aka scotlands neil mcdonald) has had a string of stunning 12 inches over the past few years on labels such as permanent vacation, unthank, shevchenko, mule and of course his four track > year of the city ep< on phonica, which was widely acclaimed upon its release in 2012. this time loti presents two long-form tracks, each a mini-masterpiece in itself. the 10 minute plus >greane< bursts into life after an intro of kicks and white noise hi-hats. it continues to slowly build, with pitch-bent synth lines and a pulsing bass-line making way for a melacholic shift in mood. truly original stuff! on the flip, a swirl of synthetic strings introduces ‘gigha’, in a manner that brings to mind rhythm is rhythm’s legendary ‘kao-tic harmony’, before the drums and infectious acid-line join in. over the 8 minutes they continue to interweave and play off each other to dazzling effect. artwork by jack featherstone, the designer of a number of sleeves for border community (including the highly praised campaign behind james holden’s ‘the inheritors’, its singles and live visuals), electric minds, warm and of course, phonica.

released in 1988, tougher than leather was the culmination of the rap/rock road that run-dmc travelled in since their earlier albums king of rock movlp675 and raising hell movlp633. its superb production, booming 808 beats combined with guitar samples, catchy choruses and smart rhymes made tougher than leather undoubtedly the best hip hop record that came out in 1988. great tracks include *mary, mary*, *runs house* and *i m not going out like that*. its equal appeal to hip hop as well as rock fans made the album a million seller, and underlined run-dmcs stature as living hip hop legends all over the world.
