does this need an explanation? my two favourite dj sides from stark reality catalog, for say brother i fixed the eq and made it a bit more club friendly also editing the crazy tripped out ending out which maybe controversial but always freaked the dance floor out so i cut that out to gain some extra volume and bass. on the flip we got bustin out of doors which has always been a favourite warm-up record again without the random ending. to make it extra cute i used the o.g hoagy carmichael’s music shop illustration. 500 only, no repress.

audiosapr is one of the most consistent albums you’re likely to come across in russia’s gost zvuk entire back catalogue. surprisingly, the full-length by saint petersburg’s scene veteran kuzma palkin is a compilation of random jams and studio recordings he made in the period of 2014-2015, carefully pieced together by label’s masterminds. sapr stands for the system of automatic projection (a russian term for computer-aided design, cad) which defines the album’s experimental yet complex and interlocking heart. based around a central theme of immediacy and spontaneity, audiosapr builds upon the foundations of early, pre-detroit era of electro and techno, and then progresses the wispy entrails of analogue gear in a contemporary dancefloor direction. it’s clearly music that can be attributed as hybrid, however it’s not you re going to think about while listening to “audiosapr”, palkin’s definitely most inspiring work to date.

julian stetter might be best known as one half of the electronic pop duo vimes, but he is no stranger to the cologne club scene. his debut ep insides stems from a long history of djing and organising underground parties across the city. a resident dj and collaborator at colognes famed jackwho club, it was these surroundings that drove stetter to dive deep into producing. his first solo project is now set to be released on the label pnn. it features three tracks plus a remix by beyou. stetters sound is polished and the precise production of each three tracks make this ep feel far from debut. emily, the main track of the single, draws you in on shimmering waves that rise and break into a deeper and spacier sound. warm beats are interjected with random snippets of whale song. listening to emily feels like receiving a welcome hug at an after party.

catch recordings is one of the uks most interesting underground labels and to mark its 10th release it is back with another essential ep featuring four fresh tracks from swedish artist, random island records owner, inter gritty, who has previously released on labels like rise and deep moves. not to mention his own random islands works. since the birth of random island in 2012 he has carved out a singular sonic niche for himself with various solo eps and albums and also his partnership with nihad tule as ntta11.

quanta records’ third release, correspondances, is a mini lp by aeon that combines experimental techno, ambient and musique concrète elements. the tracks of the album communicate through similar sounds, noises and rhythmic patterns, but while atmospheres diverge, there is a constant exchange from cold and industrial to solar and melodious so as to form a complex and balanced ensemble.
aeon’s has placed randomness at the centre of his creative process. computing and random programming have allowed the artist to explore new structures and to no longer simply consider a glitch as an error, but rather as a primal source of novel sound.

there’s much to be said for chance meetings. vitruvians – in their words, “a meeting of minds, cultures, styles and experiences, powered by music, and designed by faith” – owe their very existence to once such random encounter.
in the summer of 2014, producers frankie valentine and thomas “t-ash” sciurpa bumped into each other in a london shoe shop. over a fine selection of brogues and loafers, the conversation drifted onto music. the duo quickly realized they had much in common, and a plan began to form: they would get together and make music as vitruvians, using the alias as a vehicle for their collaborative work.

&apos’s music veers between abstract, experimental compositions and more beat driven tracks, all held together by a defined aesthetic of sonic impurities and random patterns thrown up by algorithmic computations. in &apos’s music compositional decisions are not merely reliant on himself but also on a range of processes from constrained randomness to full fledged neural networks. that is to say, the ‘instruments’ he creates have -to a certain extent- a mind of their own. there will always be a dynamic between the musician and something else that triggers, proposes or decides what will happen to the music.it is exactly from this human-machine interaction that &apos extrapolates his musical ideas that are both intricate and detailed while never losing an overall sense of emotional value. his first solo project ‘lichtdrank’ is a selection of four tracks made during his time studying sonology at the hague’s royal conservatory and the time following. it is the third and final installment of bepotel s startuplabel trilogy. previously, he has released music together with walrus and sagat under several musical projects like smaakwaterval and bepotel. the artwork of the lichtdrank ep is based on screenshots from an interactive multiplayer video game where the musical universe of &apos can be explored.

it is very difficult to present david duriez without writing an encyclopedic tome as its influence on the house music in france was decisive. since its inception in 1992, david released over a hundred records under his name, tens under various pseudonyms, mainly on vinyls on the most renowned labels like 2020vision, ovum, systematic, pokerflat, f communication, under the counter, stickman, crosstown rebels, the end, etc .. (the list is long, see discogs.com to be convinced) and as many remixes for some of the greatest artists (think moby, dj sneak, gemini, dj hell, llorca, telex, random factor, johnny fiasco, paul johnson, jori hulkkonen, ralph lawson, random factor, kenny hawkes or mr.c). founder of the label brique rouge and a whole galaxy of other labels, he participated in the creation of internationally recognized labels such as robsoul with phil weeks, freak n chic with dan ghenacia (from apollonia) or rz muzik. at a time when david had federated online the cream of the house producers via a forum (far and long before social networks), ivan smagghe had nicknamed him -the producer of the producers.- , a true house music activist, but most of all david duriez is a devastating dancefloor dj, he did several tours around the world and played in some of the biggest clubs in the world between 1995 and 2010. truly one of the most important players in the french electro scene, david is back on tracks after a few years hyatus. but don t call it a comeback because he has never really gone awol, he has been watching the scene and now he s back in the studio. you can expect a (very) long serie of releases for 2016, you have been warned!

flore delivers her first ep for polaar, both the starting point for the label and a defining moment of her ritual live show where she questions the visceral relationship between art and the holy throughout history.

the second of this year’s smd singles on their own delicacies label is features another two original tracks, leading with the hypnotic, late night techno loping of “remember in reverse”, drenched in glistening synths. the second track, “soft attack” takes a much more direct approach, with a brash battering of crash cymbals on every 4th bar marking time as a sinuous synth melody curls around the rhythmatic trunk. “soft attack (drum version)” pares it down even further, excising the melody for a minimal dj tool. also included here is a remix of ‘remember in reverse” from 90s mid west techno legend, dj hyperactive, who we’re super excited to have on this release. he extensive 11 minute rework transforms the track, sprinkling it with subtle doses of acid. after a short hiatus following their modular-only, desert recorded last album “whorl”, during which smd s james ford found himself on production duties for everyone and their dog, smd are back with bunch of techno cuts on their own delicacies label. over a couple of months in jas shaw s newly re-located synth-dense studio in leafy kent, which saw smd once again experiment with live jams as the basis for their production, they’ve pulled together a selection of eight tracks for release as a series of four singles over the coming months. smd fans will note that the earlier naming convention of delicacies has fallen by the wayside – for the simple reason that we’ve pretty much run out of weird and wonderful food stuffs to steal names from. instead, a semi-random automated process has been used to create the track names.

hidhawk is the musical alter ego of haydeé jiménez. the mexican-based artist and cultural entrepreneur is running a busy life organizing events and cultural projects alongside the border of mexico and the us. during the night, bedtime stories like alpagain evolve from the field recordings she is collecting on her various journeys. alpagain consists of recordings from istanbul, tijuana, berlin and salzburg, featuring sounds of alpine instruments such as the alphorn, ocarina and hammered dulcimer (hackbrett). the 15 minutes track is brought to the club context on the b-side of the record with a driving remix by gerald peklar and a dub retreatment by analog solutions mastermind eduardo de la calle.
