detroit s keith tucker is a man of many names, the man behind aux-88, alien fm, dj k-1, optic nerve and more. if you have even a vague interest in the motor city s electronic output of the last 20+ years his name will be instantly recognisable as someone who turns out the highest calibre electro and techno jams, the type of records that look towards the future for inspiration, existing in the subterranea and sharing the same artistic vision of artists like juan atkins drexciya, erik travis, shake, dj stingray and many more. originally released on scottish imprint seventh sign recordings in 2005 detroit saved my soul is a modern classic. it features all the hallmarks of classic 313 techno and electro which is to be expected with tucker behind the boards. first cut it s a mood (detroit saved my soul) is minimalism done right - stripped back drums with minor synth stabs punctuating flurries of vocoders and kt s voice describing the d as he sees it to us via the medium of music. killer stuff. elektronik is up next, almost classically a-u-x sounding, pure electro beats for the heads. fast paced machine funk from 50 years time beamed back to 2017 to tell us what s really up. oh, watch that bassline, you could get into trouble. finishing the ep we are treated to my mental state , a slower paced, psychedelic electro cut with killer drums and rim-shots featuring, again, kt s vox weaving in and out of the mix asking where are you, what are you doing? . absolutely essential tracks from a modern day techno legend. essential stuff. detroit saved my soul has been legitimately re-released with the full involvement of keith tucker / seventh sign recordings for 2017 and remastered by london s curve pusher from the original sources especially for mint condition. 100% legit, licensed and released. dug, remastered, repackaged and brought to you by the caring folks at your new favourite reissue label - mint condition!

frits wentink s bobby donny label returns with a new ep from icelandic producer felix leifur. it s not often someone other than the boss releases on this label so you know this new one is quality indeed. leifurwho also works as david & hjalti and davíð sveinn bjarnason has two solid eps to his name on dirt crew. they show him to be a producer of succulent deep house and atmospheric prone beats. across four cuts here he offers jazzy vibes, organic percussive patterns and authentic styles filled with warmth and soul. opener unidentified blues is a loose jumbled of hi hats and cymbals, rhodes chords and shuffling drums that could well come from the studio of a certain moodymann. they are alive and enriched with real feeling from start to finish. hampton is another tender fusion of deep kick drums, tape echo and curious melodies all tied together by jostling groove that is beautifully incidental and unhurried. contact then brings more proper jazz drums to the table, with distant sax sounds and closely miced hits and spaces of cymbal all feeling loose and free as they suck you into their world. last of all, universal rim picks up the pace with a more rooted house groove, freeform percussion and wooden hits and trilling, echo drenched melodies all making for an intoxicating cut

fouk are finally back on heist after their great kill frenzy ep in 2014 and have taken mount liberation unlimited along for a remix. weve been waiting patiently for new material, challenging the guys to take the signature fouk sound to the next level. fouks brilliance has been obvious on recent work for their own label outplay and razor n tape, as well as their respective solo projects. weve kept a close connection, teaming up whenever possible for heist showcases, with highlights in amsterdams claire and paris concrete-. seeing their work and enthusiasm made it abundantly clear that it would only be a matter of time before theyd show us what the next step would look -or better yet- sound like. anticipation ran high but boy, do fouk deliver. the excellent with lasers ep still very much portrays their own style of loose, live percussion and many layers of funk, but theyve expanded their vision and even toughened up a bit. their new taste for grit and an interest in the heavier side of funk is probably most evident on the opener f3000&#8242,,,,,, where a thunderous arpeggio is supported by distorted drums and lush cosmic synth stabs. title track with lasers is more of a classic fouk track, combining a lovely walking disco bassline and their signature drum programming with erm lasers. lots of them. the b side see you on the other side sets a different pace, carefully blending guitar licks, rhodesy chords and vocal chops into a lovely groove that feels just as carefree and improvised as it feels exciting. swedish synth nerds mount liberation unlimited ran with it and transformed it into a dreamy -pepe bradock goes balearic- track where airy echoed guitars take turns with some equally dreamy and evocative pads.

elizabeth merrick-jefferson is one of those artists who seem low-key. theres not a lot of information about her, if any, except for the existence of the first two records and a lone interview. one released in 2013 and the other in 2014. listening to either record tells you her music might be a lot of things, but low-key isnt one of them. powerful and colourful, direct, and with 313 references embedded in its dna, she pulls it off with style. elizabeths third record is no exception. it has found its home on our mothership label, burek. three happiness is tailor-made for the dance floor. it wont leave anyone with a pulse standing. playful synths, wonderful strings, and infectious groove make it impossible to ignore. knowledge revolution is layered and paced, painting a somewhat different picture. melancholy and a sense of mystery envelop this track, whose leitmotif vocal appears just frequently enough to provide insight into the title. the last track of this ep is fittingly titled noctilucent clouds. its a drumless track with a rhythmic main synth counterpointed by sounds which give off the impression of clouds shining through the darkness of winter nights. another amazing release from burek.

brightons boutique house label black key recordskicks off 2017 with a fantastic ep from label newcomer cinthie. cinthie is a well established force in berlin: as well as being a resident at key spots ipse and humboldthain club-where she spins heady vinyl only sets-she runs three much loved labels and collectives in beste modus, unison wax and beste freunde. as such, she is a true leader of the underground house scene who also runs a studio complex in berlin, and so is very much at the heart of the house conversation. kicking things off is the excellent house rhythms , a rugged, bass driven, deep house cut with flabby drums and snares and icy hi hats all sounding informed by classic deep house greats like ron trent. warm, soul infused pads emanate from the core and the whole unhurried affair really sucks you in with its cosy and romantic atmosphere. the second splendid offering is liberty, a much rawerand direct cut designed for peak time sets. again it is riddled with jazzy chords that have real soul, but the drums are exposed and banging and the whole thing barrels along at a sweat inducing pace. this is a typically classy offering from both artist and label that kicks off 2017 in real style.

next up on hell yeah is -the most balearic record i have ever released- according to label boss & it comes from japan s disco don max essa which features a four part track, themes from the hood, the cad, & the lovely, on one side of vinyl, and two more on the flip. essa was born matthew bruce and the uk artist has now been releasing his blissed out beats on labels like feel music, electric minds, bear funk and is it balearic? recording for a decade. a prolific producer whose big hits like panorama suite/uptown vibration (is it balearic?) from 2010 have long been in the hell yeah boss s record bag, essa first approached the label with a bunch of tracks. a good correspondence alchemy ensued and together the artist and label decided to put out the most timeless 12inch possible. the exquisitely ambitious themes from the hood, the cad, & the lovely is almost 12 minutes of serene ambient synth work that is like a soundtrack to a hot summer s day. heavenly chords sound just like a breathy female vocal and as they come and go, one finger piano tinkles add real emotional beauty and gentle twinkles shimmer in the distance. half way through lazy drums propel things along at a loveably lethargic pace and immediately place you on the beach. on the flip, saguaro is just as organic and beautiful, but has tumbling drums, wooden hits and soft claps as well as essa s magical synth work all bathing your soul in warm rays. b2 buran chime is perfectly horizontal and expansive, with tinkling triangles, angelic chords and scattered hits and harpsichord sounds all radiating effusively. this is timeless music that will calm busy minds now and forever.

it is making my blood boil. man, my jaw is hanging down listening to this stuff. read the email from butthole surfers man and producer, paul leary, when he heard the demo for what would become the debut philipp gorbachev & the naked man album. philipp gorbachev, the russian musician and dj, has been throwing killer parties and making some of the most innovative and exciting electronic music to come out of moscow in years. in 2014 he released his debut album silver album but when invited to perform a live boiler room he had something else in mind: a band scenario. the resulting concoction was not something locked into a 4/4 beat but rather a much more organic, groove-based sound with funk-strutting bass lines and live drums that rolled and flurried around the beats that jumped around leading the charge of the songs along with gorbachevs damo suzuki-like vocals. taking that experiment into the studio, i dont give a snare is a wild ride that jumps genres, switches paces and alters tones frequently. the opening goodman exploding in intense rhythms and heavy, spiralling riffs that at times recall sabbath but the ever-shifting drums and gargling electronics give a wonky freshness that feels impossible to place into genre. whilst gorbachev cites a range of influences from beck to blind willie johnson as being core to him, the primary motivation is the live nature of the project itself. the main influence is the constant live experience we have as music players and performers. i want to get the most out of every party, every jam, and every dancefloor.

besides launching his fresh bodybuilder quartet series (qsb), inaugurated by scott franka, nachtbraker unveils yet another quartet: four records in the the trophy quartet series (qst). both these two quartets will be released over the course of the next two years. the trophy series will cover the warmer side of the house music spectrum. and who better than parisian boy-wonder tell (banoffee pies, skylax, rutilance) to kick off proceedings with the brilliant faster than light ep. last year he released hope springs eternal on qs003 which was an overnight succes after getting rinsed by heavyweights like jeremy underground and dam swindle, so a proper solo ep was inevitable. on the a1 tell serves up some intergalactic french filter house dubbed faster than light which brings back the daft punk and armand van helden vibes of our walkman-days. we all just love filters, admit it. its true. next up is yall feel that honey (paradise mix), a tune with undeniable swing and moody chords that ultimately collide beautifully with a delectable big room piano riff that will stay in your head for days. b1 opens with a leisurely-paced jam called what can u do for me. its the pretty one of the ep, the one girls fall in love with and boys hate to love because they know hes hot stuff. a high pitched vocal, asking what you can do for her, flies over rubbery rhodes chords with neat percussion keeping you on the groove. the ep closes with b2 vamos a la playa. keywords: coconuts, sand, bikini, six-pack and tan. vamos! large and in charge.
