we pressed the 4 track hot pack of multi culti beats on a limited run of 500 jungle green records. in case you missed it, heres what the ep is all about: soul clap records welcomes one of the most unique artists in the game and he goes by the name bosq. a longtime boston homie, bosq (also known for his work with dj kon and the whiskey barons) first astounded us with his orquestra y madera album (ubiquity records) which put a modern dance floor twist on afro/latin funk and provided some of our biggest dj bombs that year. continuing to build the bridge we released his edit of fela kuti s opposite people (gator boots), collaborated on higher for our dotc vol.2 compilation (soul clap records) and we remixed his single bad for me from his sophomore celestial strut album (ubiquity records). this release is also accompanied by a sister record of remixes by auntie flo and caserta on limited yellow vinyl.

“it was so important for us to play a kind of crossover then, to weave in touches of motown, philadelphia soul and teddy pendergrass that the coloured community appreciated, and basil’s cape town sound, and sipho’s sound that was legendary in the black community, and make music that people could all enjoy together... the regime divided us: people classified coloured had identity documents, black people had the dompas. we didn’t accept that separation. sipho, although he was born in kzn, could play any feel. sometime he’d joke, does my bass line feel coloured enough?”

fourth release from parisian label unlearn. after celebrating european talents with previous v/a : four shades, aurèle & caseer are back on us soil with chicagoan artist g. marcell. the title track hails towards the housier side of things. vocals sung by the artist, moody melody and a-1 production skills make ‘@ noon’ a serious summer groover. the rayne dub mix stands on the more melancholico-techno side of things with cleaver drum programing, proper bassline action and straightforward dance-floor material. the flipside shows a more experimental side of things with sound thought, an acidic trip full of haunting strings and cowbell awkwardness, and groov spin, a dazzling tune halfway between celestial unpredictability and caribbean bliss.

great debut release and new label from a rubadub shop regular featuring tracks from shop regulars. tip. this first release is made up of 3 tracks from my friends and 1 from myself. there’s no concept here other than putting out music that was otherwise not going to see the light of day. the first track is by bleaker who put out a 12inch on unknown to the unknown last year, the second by miz aka big miz whos been putting out music on dixon avenue basement jams, the third by the burrell connection who has a release on west end communications and a track on a craig knows released compilation and the last track is from myself which got a play on big mizs boiler room set. these tracks were all sent to me around the same time and it felt right to make a place for them on a record. bleaker, miz and the burrell connection have all been making waves in scotland and beyond and these 3 tracks are proof that the attention is warranted. and i dont think my track is too bad either.

coming up next on format is a new ep from the label s head honcho juan sanchez including remixes by jeroen search and andre kronert. the diffy ep marks juan s first format ep released under his own name, and it s definitely one that will turn heads on the floor. the original version of diffy and mirage reflect juan s trademarked minimal but hard-as-nails techno sound: staccato kicks, nervously rattling percussions and looped synth pulses make up the fundaments of both tracks, locking in all ingredients for proper techno clubbing.up first on the remix tip is renowned techno veteran jeroen search, whose remix of diffy is a chunky piece of stripped floor funk with subtle hints of detroit techno. following up is a rerub by andre kronert, who drops a beefy slab of mid-tempo techno that s particularly heavy on the dub side of things. 007 does have a license to kill for a reason, you know...

april showers bring may flowers, but this april claude vonstroke brings you the rain break. inspired by two different songs from the 80s - (razes classic break for love and oran juice jones the rain), claude has replayed and re-sung all the music from scratch to make a special cover tune of both tracks changed and combined into a surefire dirtybird classic. to quote vonstroke, i kept singing the break for love bassline over and over again in my head but the vocal that always popped in over the top was from the oran juice jones. i cant explain why that happened but i just thought they went together so well that i ran with it.here comes the b is a much weirder affair. built with massive psychedelic effects, a huge kick and almost no hi-hat pattern, this is late night cavemen music at its best. this big release from cvs will have you wishing for a downpour so you can go walking in the rain.

they say you have your whole life to make your first album, years upon years of growth, learning and experience filtered into one perfect record. your debut is supposed to be the one you labour over, while the follow-up is meant to be served up within spitting distance of the last. well, not if you’re london based wild palms. “we did that in reverse,” explains the band’s sardonic, quick-witted frontman lou hill. “the first album was just the songs that we would play live, we wrote it really quickly. but this one took ages...” five years in fact.
recorded by the band in the same self-built manor house studio where they made their 2011 de-but ‘until spring’, the new album ‘live together, eat each other’ is a lusciously layered offering of hazy experimentalism and off-kilter alt-pop, that follows in the auspicious lineage of beach house, cocteau twins and tv on the radio.

thomas urv and miss mostlys norwegian techno imprint ploink drops the second in its trilogy of releases celebrating the brands 20-year anniversary. following on from the first release that featured renowned scandinavian artists such as prins thomas, mental overdrive, urhaug, nordenstam, christian tilt and hutmacher, the labels next outing sees five more members of the local scene make appearances.

jessy lanza s second album oh no is inspired by japanese 80s electro outfit yellow magic orchestra’s philosophy of experimental pop. playfully laced with cascading arpeggios, crispy drum machines and breezy songs, oh no has an infectious energy that has carried over from her live shows.
made in her hometown of hamilton, ontario, with production partner jeremy greenspan from junior boys, the plaintive, reverb drizzled mood of the first album has all but given away to a more direct, confident and joyful album. as jessy says ‘i want to make people feel good and i want to make myself feel good’

faraway reach casts classixx’s young-but-nostalgic melodies and sublime chords in a more mature, restrained light, albeit no less lively and bright. establishing themselves as producers of note on their debut lp (pitchfork called them “great songwriters, too”), faraway reach delivers powerfully smooth and soulful jewels that are still decidedly their own - the classixx signature is one that can’t be traced. their love of plaintive voices and disco-inspired grooves is as evident as ever, but this time around everything is a bit bolder, the cast is bigger, the melodies distilled into a higher potency - it’s all just as good, but better. “on the first record, we wanted to include only people that were our friends, and have it be really personal…” david begins, a thought blake finishes: “this time we wanted to make a record with a lot of different kinds of vocals, to see if we could be the common thread.” the album traverses locales, vocalists and inspirations. it s a fitting movement for the duo, from venice beach to the mountains of south africa and everywhere in between - a faraway reach.

5 tracks of electro gold. some names you have heard before (cygnus and convextion in erp mode for instance) and some newcomers who ve have been honing their craft for quite some time now.. t.r.u. - texas recordings underground. a label in the making for quite some time now. with the overwhelming amount of talent here in the lone star state, it became apparent a label with the purpose of solely showcasing dj s and producers from this state was in order. from the border of mexico all the way up to the panhandle, you will hear lps and eps spanning the musical gamut with no concern for seeking specific genres. if it s good, it s good and you ll hear it.

crimes of the future rounds off the year in fine style with an absolutely essential ep from twins. 3 moody us house cuts straught out of atlanta and a sublime deep remix from label boss scott fraser. opening up with cause of dissociation, a slice of banging chicago house that would not have been out of place in the hands of mike dunn at the warehouse. rattling drums amd percussion a cut up vocal and a killer bassline make for dancefloor devastation. next up -you take too- takes things a little deeper, maintining the groove with chicago inspired percussion and filtered drums and stabbing synths grooving the track along. over on side b scott fraser takes -you take too- on to 5am on a dark smoke filled dancefloor, with a deep bassline and soaring strings. adding additional percussion, keys and swirling echoes... could be the sound of a lost nu groove classic. finally things close out with -a way from now- with more chicago inspired goodness with a funky bassline, pumping percussion and eerie ethereal keys rounding the ep off in fine style.

it was only a matter of time before the detroit / sheffield music connection was made again, this time with annie hall taking a break from co-running detroit underground to make an appearance on like minded sheffield label central processing unit. annie dedicates this e.p. to women in science (marie curie, lise meitner, elizabeth arden and caroline herschel) when tenured positions for women working in the field were extremely rare. although the tracks appear to be straight from the science lab, don t let that fool you as each track is brimming with laid back computer funk with subtle melodies that keep you hooked. annie has deviated from her signature fractured beats and delivered an easy listening electro affair that s equally at home on the dancefloor as it is chilling in high fidelity. tenured positions is a limited edition (300 copies worldwide) 12- vinyl with printed sleeve, paper inner and shrinkwrapped.

bottenvikans silverkyrka is a northern sweden congregation that preaches through their machine music: acid techno infused with the message of infinity in the tradition of the swedish revival movement. in their first release “det stora uppvaknanet” (the great awakening), bottenvikens silverkyrka distributes their faith and hope that more people will be saved and make their own acid revival meetings. there are tracks for the acid baptism, communion and for the dance revival.

awake represented a high-water mark for scott hansen, the san francisco musician better known as tycho. described by hansen as, “in many ways, the first true tycho record,” awake announced the arrival of tycho as a full band, and it found hansen streamlining the group’s sound, focusing on the drums and aiming to capture the energy and power of the group’s live set. the story of awake arrives at its natural conclusion with this 12” of remixes, on which hansen’s songs are re-interpreted by producers who make the songs their own while retaining all of their core elements.

last year saw the mysterious garage shelter make their debut appearance on skylax, and little is still known about them! all we know is they are back with some freshness on the skylax classic sublabel. first up is bring back love, a track that will sink its claws in with that infectious vocal sample hook. sticking with the old school sample vibe is the lonely heart dub of attempt, it’s a bit more mellow but still has plenty of groove in it. friend of the garage shelter, dj la foudre, appears over on the b side with it’s alright (signal st mix). still on that catchy sample tip, it features one of the grooviest bassline and funky guitar pairings i’ve heard in a long time. next up, perception 66 is a smooth house affair from yet another friend, asa no hikari. rounding out the package is garage shelter’s own you (still), a dreamy pad-driven track that may indeed be the pick of the release. while we don’t know much about garage shelter, we can’t help but look forward to what they come out with next!

blackwater starts it’s third cycle with it’s tenth release with an ep from london based duo, ossa di mare. a record that has come from the dark internal depths of a carnal energy between the two artists that make up duo, constructed around the idea of hallucinogenic experiences induced by dimethyltryptamine. each track relates to a understanding and connection throughout the experience.

for the debut of his newfound label ipso records, ko&#776,,,,lsch wanted to try something new. he has long been a fan of limiting himself in the studio. sometimes working with less equipment brings out the best in you, so for the first release i figured it would be interesting to experiment with this, ko&#776,,,,lsch says. inspired by the danish dogma films, he decided to make a rule, and as he is not one for overdoing things, the rule is very simple.

fantastic voyage’s autumn 2015 release of soul for dancers proved so successful, that we didn’t have to think twice when lois wilson (mojo, record collector) asked if she could do it all over again. it turns out that there were plenty more classic sides in her dj crates, drawing on that rich seam of early soul and proto-soul rhythm & blues, of the sort that would have packed the dancefloors on the sixties club scene, or has been embraced by subsequent generations of club soul diehards.

transhumanism ep is a combination of ethereal and angular sounds, but with many points of reference concatenated between them. starting from the side a, if methodical ear has as its base, a rhythm with an incipit house, but with edgy sounds always in progress, shadow manipulation of mind looks at an utopian techno, together a dense and obsessive hypnotic groove. instead, in the b-side, synapsi sonora-, presents a classical structure, but with kick and snare somewhat in the foreground, with low, evolving, sick and stifling pads in their concept of low-fi timbal. state of induced hibernation is an alien traces in his gait metal percussion and sharp synth, make a song to say the least harsh and unwilling to be defined and confined to specific genres, as in the complex is all this project for ambiwa records.

more cut up, heavy dance floor tackle that criss-crosses the boundaries of proto-house and disco from those anonymous edit masters the secret squirrels. tracky as hell and cut loud for impact, the squirrels make no apologies for taking aim directly at the dance floor. no nonsense - devastation guaranteed!
