quite a few months have passed since adam port released his last original material on keinemusik. it’s been almost too long. but then again, every expert will confirm, you won’t see a “sonnenfinsternis” every other week. port’s new ep is going under the name of that very astronomical curiosity and accordingly, the like-titled cut on a can only be the result of a rare cosmic constellation. it starts with a spoken word field recording. could it be, someone secretly recorded parts of the internal pre-release labelmeeting? we’ll leave that to your imagination. but then, all solid facts. a forceful beat, decorated with hihat-hiss, stoically pounding synthbass, rattling snare-staccato and space-opening synth-layers. finally, some siren’s wailing, just in case someone didn’t get the immediacy of this material. classy floor substance, that is, with the scarcity value of an eclipse. “working for it”, as the first track on the flipside, is rather going for the deeper realms. this coproduction with jennifer touch, a singer/producer that just moved from leipzig to berlin, is built up on a cosy, warm synth-priming, that touch congenially contrasts with her undercooled wavy vocals. an emotional rollercoaster, if you will.

a-z is a new label started by al zanders ! this stand-out new production talent has already, across only a handful of releases (as lodger on the stamp label & under his own name on karakul & blind jacks journey) made quite a name for himself ! a-z is a new platform for his distinctive and eclectic output after sharing a stage at shambala festival, al was impressed by the 7 piece sheffield group hot diamond aces, who sent the crowd into a dancing frenzy with their bombastic brass licks and afro-beat inspired rhythms. so impressed in fact, that he approached them afterwards with the idea of doing a remix and starting a label. the reworked version of dsomc is a certified corker that has already been tearing up dancefloors. for the flip, things get deeper with an unashamedly happy house jam raiz , which features some twinkling keys from sleepsang. perfect for the summer!

basil & rogers is a sleazy, california disco duo made up of heru (dj) johnny basil and body rogers. basil, a multi-instrumentalist, long-time record collector, and energy healer is a man that s been making music for a long time under many different guises and in many different styles. heru avenger (acid/psych rock), non stop (electronic/free jazz), baast (kraut rock/jazz funk), and kandi jones (slut rock) are just a few of his projects, past and present. most of this music has been around for the entirety of the 90 s and 2000 s without being heard because despite basil s outspoken appearance (described by many as looking like iggy pop s twin brother and would never be caught wearing a t-shirt no matter the location) he s very quiet about his musical output. body rogers is also part of the non stop group and is a master of electronics and engineering. on the basil & rogers project the two have made a disco 12- that is influenced by classic-era dance music while still being completely unique and far from conforming. it s crazy, it s sexy, and it s sleazy. tune in .

the first r&b rec record is born from the encounter of two artists in the gloomy baltimore of the beginning of the millennium, after years in which their artistic roads proceeded in a very much parallel manner, without ever physically crossing paths, driven by their passion for analog instrumentation and the desire to find and create new rhythmics and sounds. it is in 2013 the two decide to join their forces to create their own personal vision of techno music and dance music in general. resulting in a hot and scratchy vinyl that combines dark, percussion sounds well known from detoit techno, with the sought after rhythmic of breakbeat and drum and base, of the british nineties. also packed with influences of acid-house, this record incorporates features of the so influential 80 s punk era, finally sinking it s roots in the psychedelic currents of the 70 s. the result is a brand new genre which is difficult, if not impossible to define. a unique way of defining dance music, in all its aspects, which is identified under the name of spaceship surgery techno.

sebastian mullaert is of course first of all known as half of minilogue, a duo so influential in the hypnotic field of techno that korg recently named a synthesizer after them. lately, sebastian has focused on his solo path under the wa wu we moniker, releasing stripped back and personal music on his own wa wu we label, the cryptic s.e.l.f label and now on kontra-musik. on the title track travellers, sebastian mullaert uses a straight up techno formula that may surprise listeners who haven t followed his move into wa wu we territory. you almost get the impression sebastian buried a recording destined for a rigid techno label in a deep forest back in the 90 s and has now decided to uncover it again, finding that the track has matured under the black soil.

those familiar with the world of dub disco and modern balearica should know all about layne fox, a san francisco-based producer who has released some killer records over the last decade as part of noted collective 40 thieves. the bay area ensemble has been responsible for some killer records, including gems on rong music and leng, who released their expansive debut album the sky is yours back in 2014. now, fox has decided to go it alone for an outing on magic feet that marks his first solo outing since 2005 s move me under the tuffy alias. its something of a gem, too, effortlessly combining many of his familiar influences with nods towards druggy italo-disco and horizontal pop.

according to white material pair galcher lustwerk and alvin aronson, their first collaborative album under the studio ost alias contains a mix of breezy electro, aquatic dub, high speed jit, and shimmering atmospherics. while clearly tongue-in-cheek, it s a fairly accurate description. certainly, there s a fluidity, moodiness and palpable sense of atmosphere at the heart of scenes, which casually drifts between hard-edged club workouts, hazy post-club fare and dreamy, horizontal experiments. it was apparently recorded over a three-year period, during jam sessions at various new york studios. its the spontaneous aspect of its creation that has the biggest effect, and makes the whole thing feel like fleeting snapshots of moments in time.

for their tenth release, voodoo down has again chosen to debut a new act to add to their label roster. andy harper and nic ford have been making music together for over a decade but began releasing in earnest under the name maddermodes in 2014 on their own label, shift coordinate points. they have since put out records on the labels millions of moments and night drive music. their handful of releases have already drawn support from top names like move d and nick höppner, and its clear that the duos sound is only getting more refined with each successive record. the ep entitled emprical evidence is a wholly cinematic piece of work, spread across four tracks that unravel slowly, unified by a theme of pumping syncopated rhythms under sprawling pad and string progressions. its easy to get lost in the thick arrangements, and the inventive use of samples and melodic elements invite repeat listening. equally suitable for early morning hours, ultra-deep techno sets, or quiet home listening sessions.

having finally woken from our deep winter slumber, team fancy human shuffle in through the door of 2016, in need of a shave and a coffee, clutching the newly minted test pressing of the first full release from london duo and co-founders lucatwana. the normally work shy combo deliver to you fh003, or under it s more catchier moniker, city droids. if they d have got it done quicker, we might have been able to cash in on the stars wars related hype, but never mind. anywho, city droids takes the form of three originals, beginning with the uplifting funk of city fucking, moving through the tougher and darker grind of droids on roids and ending with a nod to detroit with nobody knows. pleasingly, we also have a fancy human favourite tigerskin on remix duties, with a smooth, driving, hypno re-imaging of droids on roids that hits the nail firmly on the head.

it s fair to say that boris bunnik has made an impact in his short career. in less than a decade this dutch man, under monikers like conforce and versalife, has scaled electro and techno with subtle ambient touches and idm echoes. and that s exactly what he s doing for the singularity ep. lush pads and flowing bars punctuated by crisp percussion, -shine eye- sets the scene. -autobots- adopts those same brittle beats, this time using them to send dreaming strings skyward. northern winds swirl around the colder chords of -milnet-, chords that dawn into absorbing swirls of -transgenics.- masterful machine music.

lizards are lee forster (1/3 last waltz) and james hadfield (the mainstay of the elizabeth collective). taking over a full side, and clocking in at over 9 minutes, anthemic understatement is a very difficult trick to pull of, but the deepness of feel here, coupled with the restraint shown in rhythm and melody, allows the track space to ebb, flow and truly get under the skin of the listener. it s one of those rare tracks that are as equally beautiful as they are danceable international track lives up to it s name, seeing the north eastern english producers channel the japanese take on the balearic sound as heard in productions by artists such as cosmes.

billy nasty’s electrix records launches its 2016 schedule by welcoming back the always impressive, carl finlow. carl is one of dance music’s leading lights and a multi-talented producer across a range of genres, with releases stretching back to the early 90s. well known for the 2020 vision label he launched with ralph lawson, his solo work however has often taken an electro route with releases under various guises like random factor, black labs, voice stealer, silicon scally and scarletron (with daz quayle) on labels including warp, fuel, playhouse, paper, trope, sony, klang, arista, soma, scsi, pagan, minifunk, seventh sign and satamile. it’s been almost 3 years since carl appeared on electrix. his ‘boot loop ep’ became the label’s second release after its re-launch in 2013. but it’s definitely been worth the wait. his ‘electricology 4 ep’ once again shows why he’s a master of the genre. from the tough and funked-up ‘lateral thoughts’, speckled and melodic ‘hyperloop’, squelching, bassy ‘suspect reanimation’ and sinister, beat-driven ‘latext’, right through to the playful ‘atomic level’ (a bonus track for the digital release), the ep shines, with a stamp of high quality running though its core.

leon vynehall & a1b first started releasing collaborative music under laszlo dancehall in 2013. after several highly praised releases, both artists have spent the last few years concentrating on their successful solo careers. late last year they found time to work in studio once more and we’re extremely proud to be releasing the next chapter of laszlo dancehall on wolf music.

this polyrhythmic swirl of drum machine, tape echo and locked grooves is the product of two post-1982 jam sessions between an anonymous dj and drum machine operator duo. the dj liked the way a record happened to skip. more were made to do so. the drum machine operator had had a bit too much, but he knew that 100 divided by 3 was 33 - and he was feeling the toms that night. file under: funky experimental.
