dont be afraid present the latest ep from americas disco nihilist, and the first in their special editions series. disco nihilists releases for gerd jansons running back imprint and for local grassroots us labels like construction paper are mainstays in the record boxes of house djs worldwide, and his live sets have rocked the panorama bar, robert johnson, the cult take 5 café in bristol and dont be afraids own london shindigs. this release from disco nihilist sets the tone for a series of classic dancefloor cuts from the most sought after producers on the underground house circuit.

after previous remixes for sideshow and mymy on aus music in 2009, bristol-based kieren lomax (aka komon) will return to will sauls respected imprint this july with, walk the walk. with his debut lp, released last year on apple pips, komon asserted himself as a producer capable of shapeshifting through a variety of soundscapes.

after years sound tracking the dancehalls of bristol via their considered selections as djs, brotherly pair the kelly twins add label bosses to their cvs with the establishment of happy skull. the label kick offs in illustrious fashion with a collaborative release between two of bristols most interesting producers, kowton and hyetal. adopting the name systems of desire, the pair worked on a track together, before going off to produce their own individual versions entitled *control* and *consumption*, the results are exactly the intriguing cross between kowtons raw, crunchy, grime influenced techno and hyetal’s glistening synth work you would imagine.

without trying to making it into a thing in its own right, there is a bit of a coincidence that is appearing for some of our houndstooth artists. following dylan richards chrysalis-like metamorphosis into house of black lanterns, alec storey is the latest artist to shift phase and re-christen his output after signing to our label, progressing from the al tourettes moniker in favour of the more becoming, second storey. whilst his new name might be in homage to the musical path set forth for him by his father, the four-track margosa heights ep sounds very little like anything you have heard from the bristol based producer before.

die yippiee-vögel aus hannover haben für ihre neue ep ihre fühler jedenfalls weit ausgestreckt und bis ins ferne all gefunkt, um letztendlich eine nachricht aus ihrer eigenen stadt zu bekommen.der hannoveraner sebi mono aka bass tikal, der eigentlich eher fans von dnb und dubstep bekannt ist, hatte mit seinem partner aus bristol mehrere neue raketen gebaut und konnte seine langjährigen freunde sofort von ihrer mission begeistern. euphorisiert vom neuentdeckten machte sich mono und die vögel sofort an die arbeit. kurz vor dem start der ersten zweiwöchigen 12-mission und der folgenden zusätzlichen digitalen streifzüge freut sich das gesamte team euch nun ihren hoffnungsträger vorzustellen:da eine schallplatte ohne qualitätsverluste nur eine bestimmte track-länge zulässt, fanden sich am ende exakt drei tracks, die nun den dunklen weg der macht bestreiten. auf der a-seite findet sich das mehr als 10-minütiges debüt der beiden neuen vögel. hipster und youtube-kritiker würden dieses stück wohl als episch beschreiben. das yippiee-team fand aber, dass der titel stellar völlig ausreicht und ihren griff zu den sternen gut genug beschreibt. bei den tracks auf der b-seite handelt es sich hingegen um sehr an der bassline orientierte tracks, die auch durch die unvoreingenomme und unkonventionelle herangehensweise der beiden dnb-produzenten ihre gewisse würze erhält. neben durchaus bekannten grooves zeichnet besonders der feinfühlige einsatz von flächigen sounds im zusammenspiel mit prägnanten, aber auch maßvollen vocals diese ep aus.

prolific dutch producer roel funcken has established himself an agile, meticulous sonic craftsman whose output has consistently been as accessible as it has innovative. most recently, he opened for flying lotus and tipper during his last us tour. as half of the group funckarma, he has recorded for esteemed labels including skam, ad noiseam, arcola (warp), isophlux, marguerita, and others. for mercury retrograde, his first release on schematic, funken taps into textures reminiscent of the mid 90s drum n base sub genre tech step, the lush downtempo of bristol, and hans zimmer’s soundtrack work. this latest release adds to the ever evolving, rich, and inspired catalog of funcken.

the first of two remix discs of ivanos excellent lp. up first are bristol residents outboxx who bring a slick electro vibe to 113. chilled and melodic with a classic sounding b-line, this is one of the best remixes to feature on the label to date. flip for two remixes by roger gerressen, a member of the eshu collective along with mr tetelepta. his 117 remix is a slick house affair again with the b-line very much in the fore. his take on 119 is a much deeper affair, dubbed in its outlook with the melancholic piano stabs of the original a main feature.

forget me not is a trio from bristol with a rich musical history and close association to the city from which they hail. as solo artists they have put out countless d&b 12 inches and now combine their forces into an even more powerful production outfit. and that is all we are telling you ahead of the release of their four track ep, stronger, on losing suki.

ununhexium (r-n 116) is the sixth release of raster-noton unun series. emptyset is a bristol based project formed in 2005 by james ginzburg, di- rector of the multiverse studios and the curator and electronic artist paul pur- gas. the project explores the legacy of analogue media, integrating aspects of rhythm, signal processing and spatial recording within the framework of mini- malist composition. their work interrogates the perceptual boundaries between noise and music and the potential for both technology and architecture to em- bed and codify themselves within sound. collapsed is emptysets first release on raster-noton and investigates the threshold where sonic structure is destabilized to the point where a chaotic order emerges out of a resistance to fragmentation and likewise explores the potential contained within this liminal space of transition. across the four tracks of the release a structural grammar is defined and then pushed to excess to the point where it reforms from repetitive and stable frameworks into non-grid based forms and ultimately chaotic rule sets.

razor sharp futuristic textures from the bristol based producer, dropping one of his deadliest eps to date. stratagalastico is an absolute bomb of machine-made dynamite, dark and deadly for those who like to lurk in the shadows. creepy shenanigans are most certainly the order of the day, but with that said, marco ends the ep with a deep, melodic piece titled bugs in the virus, a transcendent composition that enriches the stratagalastico experience and completes the package. killer!

along with massive attack and tricky, portishead was part of the bristol triumvirate that popularized triphop in the early nineties, especially in america. but what made them stand out was their added elements of cool jazz, acid house and soundtrack samples to their slow, elastic beats, creating an atmospheric and seductive sound that appealed to a broad audience. in 1998, when they realized that fans were swapping bootlegs of their live shows like crazy, portishead decided to capture a unique performance.
>roseland nyc< was a one night stand of sorts at the new york city roseland ballroom, where geoff barrow, adrian utley and beth gibbons were joined by the 35-piece new york philharmonic orchestra. these new arrangements gave a new sense of dramatic tension, and in the process they created one of the most breathtaking albums of the genre.
