to rack & ruin comes thundering your way slap bang in time for summer courtesy of our italian disco brother in arms dj rocca and his compardre n2b. the usual high standard of sounds are as present as ever on the 6th instalment of our edits and reworks imprint. get up hits you with a rolling bassline that brims with plenty of pant flapping groove & wah wah guitar licks before that ever so familiar vocal kicks in for a full on reggae disco workout. weird safari certainly lives up to its name - a stripped back, dark & almost techno sound, alongside tinkering percussion and spaced out wild animal noises surely make for a weird safari. dubby pino has you from the off, all the foot stamping & money shaking elements are present - hooky guitar, fat bass loop, infectious percussion, soulful vocal licks and a gorgeous little piano break. mr rossi’s backpain starts off by getting the award for the best song title we’ve ever had on rack & ruin, but as well as that it’s in the proper groovy dance floor tackle category with a bassline & guitar that commands your respect and then when the 4/4 kicks in at 1 min, well just have a listen.

for our second release on wavereform, we continue our explorations into sophisticated sounds from mostly-unexplored areas with the production debut from juras lietus, a 25 year-old latvian producer from riga whose mysterious origins in this out-of-the-way locale may surprise listeners, but whose sound fits very well into the label’s mission to reform the sound sphere with simple and elegant tracks that demand attention and bring unknown talent deserved notice. lietus wastes no time in showing off his developed dub techno style on >dark frank< as the bold, well-defined contours of the bottom end are contrasted with gentler ambient textures in the opening, it acquires more force as it moves along as he adds harder percussion patterns to the framework while the dense atmospherics progress barely in the background. >direct< is the more subtle and atmospheric of the pair, as crisp, delicate drums develop slowly while also suggesting melody. it too gains strength as it goes though, with ricocheting percussion and a barely-controlled feedback wail leading into a dramatic breakdown before he slowly winds things down in the detail-rich final section. j&#363,,,,,,,ras lietus and latvian techno may be mostly unknown, but this strong showing for wavereform 002 reveals much still to be uncovered in these eastern lands.

hailing from bari, nico lahs has become a beloved member of the stock5 family. on the latest instalment of the label that guy blesses us with his runway ep. but don’t mix up the title with some anorexic chicks that stumble along the catwalk heidi klum sent ‘em on. if there is one direction, it would lead straight into a planetary orbit. the opener “shreder” sets the pace and mood, a decent composition of pulsating synths, a vibrating bass line and a whispering voice, telling us to fasten our seatbelt because our next stop is going to be “orion”. actually this is in one of the biggest astral objects having been discovered yet. nico takes us there on his spaced out trip, while we are watching stars being born and dying in super novas. on the flip we’re finally approaching “runway” the title track. dive into a world that is undiscovered, promising and overwhelming. all in all this ep is way more than “mystic”, which is the last track. we left our planet as humans and we landed as androids in stock5 galaxy, which is ever expanding, crossing boundaries and creating new life on the universal dance floor.

the legendary tony rohr graces phobiq with his presence and offers two tracks alongside his new partner-in-crime layton giordani. the ep starts out with the sparse arrangement of -careless suggestions-, driven by a locomotive bassline and grinding rhythm section. moody stabs reinforce the bleak vibe, and the vocals coming at us from otherworldly black holes only add to the mood. label boss sasha carassi steps up for the remix in his trademarked stomping style, making use of hypnotic elements and the busy claps from the original. industrial-sounding hi-hat action drives his interpretation all the way home, after an apocalyptic breakdown, of course. on -reggae shiz- things are more stripped-down with bare drums holding everything together, as the rest of the arsenal slowly builds around menacing chords and a rocksteady groove. behind the spotlight, liquid bass comes together with quirky percussion to complete this almost-10-minute-long opus. dema maintains a sublime, shadowy mood in his version but opts for busier hats and heavier usage of chords.

after a brief hiatus church are back with a debut offering of original material from apes. the a side *two thousand six* is a straight up techno work out, having been tried and tested this track is aimed directly at the dance floor. chaos in the cbd are on board for the remix taking us on a journey of warm, deep, subtle analogue house fresh off the back of their stand out track *78 to stanley bay*. the b side *cold love* goes some way to show apes’ versatility as a producer, it’s a nostalgic piece of work, with a pulsating bass-line driving through the track along with intricate percussion and a choice vocal sample to round things off. cold love is equally suited for the club or for home listening. apes right hand man seb wildblood takes the track in a slightly different direction, using elements of the percussion and transforming the vocal sample for a delightful melodic contribution to the ep. early support from paul woolford, breach, ben pearce, dusky, alexander nut & more.

kiwanuka, a 25 year-old uk native of ugandan heritage, was raised in north london where he split his time between session work and local gigs. along the way, having found footing as a solo artist, he was signed to communion records, then polydor, and has since performed throughout europe and north america too touring in direct support of adele. he made his way through nashville this past summer with just enough pause and aplomb to commit these morsels to tape. the a-side *you ve got nothing to lose* is an original composition, featuring the buzzards dominic davis on upright bass and cory younts on piano, joined also by fellow balladeer lillie mae rische on fiddle. their contributions transform his work into a stone-cold groove with almost orchestral underpinnings, making it a fitting extension of their previous blue series. the single also features a chilling rendition of townes van zandts infamous *waitin round to die* on the b-side, the perfect compliment to the timbre and mood of the a-side.

fina records marks its fifteenth release with borrowed indentitys *bang bang boogie*, a four-track single of rugged house and disco grooves. romanian born now germany based borrowed identity has been releasing gradually creeping out his electronic compositions since late 2011, releasing through reputable imprints such as supplement facts, pets recordings and quintessentials to name a few. picking up support along the way from leading names such as mike huckaby, move d, brawther and delano smith.

dublin born colin cloughley, aka anodyne, has been producing twisted electronic music since the 90s, forging links with labels such as psychonaviagation, combat and skam along the way. he creates emotive, yet dark futuristic tracks, inspired by ancient machines, experimental technology and desolate landscapes. produced using a mixture of analog and digital synthesis, the fractured ep fuses futurist electro beats with darkside breaks and analogue synths. limited to 300 copies worldwide, this vinyl version features 2 tracks exclusive to the physical release.

ruairi kennedy is klose one, a fierce and respected dj with a history of playing some of the finest pirate stations out there (including currently hosting the school records show on rinse) and is renowned for his outstanding sets at major festivals and clubs. now turning his hand to production, his debut comes on loefahs co-run label school records and follows previous eps from dusky and paleman. this to-the-point two tracker offers a brace of raw tracks that straddle the divide between the rawest vibes house, bass and techno have to offer and makes no compromises along the way.

deep shit is best known as a club night curated by jack savidge of friendly fires and edwin congreave of foals. originally started as a place for deep, intense, party music, the last 18 months have seen the two resident djs host the likes of teed, andy blake, leon vynehall and luke solomon at various london institutions including plastic people, ministry of sound, bussey building, and corsica studios, finding their parties championed by guardian guide and time out along the way.

slum science was formed in 2003 by uk producer danny white who released the gs delight ep on daz saunds resident records london label. collaborations with dan ruck & eddie leader saw the slumsters have subsequent releases on deep future, icon, greenhouse, jackin tracks and black cherry gaining fans along the way from heads like mark fafina and derrick carter.

hayat zor is a beautiful blend of rave-nostalgia, 80s electro-pop and italo, all shot through with a melancholic, wistful air. working with analog synths, vintage drum machines, live instrumentation, and the help of a few friends and collaborators along the way. encompassing four original productions, hayat zor is a collection on which emotional resonance and technical expertise sit side by side. the vinyl comes with download code for the full ep, including 2 remixes by gavin russom and petrels.

rondenion is a japanese dj and producer. his link with music started working as a recording artist in the late 90s. under the name hirofumi goto, his released his debut ep *ameria*. it drew attention for its dark atmosphere, and was played by international figures of the electronic scene such as derrick may. he changed his name to rondenion as a tribute to chicago and detroit. not so long later, he released his *love bound ep* on the respected rush hour records. it reached the top sales chart position on the rushhour store, and rondenion began to make himself known within the european scene. in 2012, he co-founded ragrange symphony, alongside no milk and kez ym. kicks kicks is a young graphist, dj and producer based in france. his passion for skateboarding lead him to discover all the 90s deep house/garage scene such as kerry chandler through skateboard videotapes. his debut set happened in bordeaux a few years ago alongside nicholas & larcier. he is an analog freak and started producing his first tracks in 2013 which will finally be out on cracki records.

mole city is not in the tradition or deviating from the tradition – it is the tradition. after two decades of launching drums, guitars and pianos through the shifting interzones between harmony and chaos (moonlighting along the way with the likes of sleater-kinney, wild flag, elliott smith, built to spill and a long list of others), quasi are a genre of their own - they write songs in the style of quasi, and mole city is the quasi song book: parlour sing-alongs for the last century.

2013 repress / release number 6 from our label brings us oscar muleros latest work, proof that the new sounds hes experimenting with do not constitute at all a departure from his command of the rawest side of the purest techno. horses, oscar muleros new ep, takes us back to the mulero that the majority of the public will recognise, to the overwhelming sound that has led him straight to the top over the past two decades. the record opens with like a wolf: broken drum beats, sharp hats, fm basses and dynamic white noise drones whose energy never falters throughout the track. horses, the second track, gives the record its name and offers intricate rhythm programming, dark atmospheres and acid sounds that, as a whole, create a mental and hypnotic feeling. the closing track is in a silent way, which runs along similar lines to the previous two, but with less bpms and with an obsessive sequence that mutates and develops throughout the track leaving the listener with a mills aftertaste, but with a berliner touch.

this ep on memento records sees alfonso leon take his production skills to the next level. vinyl compresors soulful melodies and tribal percussions are matched by a deliciously funky and luscious bass line, until acid synth stabs open the way to a low-pitched, creepy, almost manic dark vocal that crawls along the groove.
fabrizio maurizis unique taste resonates hugely in his remix: a computerised, robotic low frequency bounce underpins a loopy rework of the dreary vocal, bringing its more rhythmical and human elements to the fore, marrying them to the relentless beat. outstanding works, both tracks.

since its inception in 2001, each entry in the pop ambient series has included its year of conception in its title, an irony in the fact that many consider the music being timeless in more than one way: a feel-good classic to some, a rigorous experiment to others, pop ambient always has located itself between the poles of habitual listening and sonic curiosity, with the space in-between beats being a way more interesting material than the beat itself. as in the years before, pop ambient 2013 collects an illustrious cast of producers uniting genre pioneers alongside old friends and some surprising new arrivals.

botox present >basement love<, the first part of their second album >sans dormir<. two years after their previous lp >babylon by car<, cosmo vitelli and julien briffaz decided to unveil this new project through six different moments - call them eps - like six volumes forming a single story, each one being released every two months. the slow title-song >basement love< is released as a way of introduction, along three dancefloor remixes that lift this basement up in the air.
