haling from asuncion, lpzs ariel soler, javier rodriguez and jorge carron have spent the past 4 years gradually putting paraguay on the dance music map. for whats proving to be their watershed year, may saw the trio release the well-circulated >1983< ep via the body work imprint, shortly before delivering an era-themed mix for the fashion rag, dazed & confused. now, following on from a recent collaboration with hyperdubs lv, the south americans make their debut on the long serving loungin recordings. >the benedict & grace ep< combines two purpose-made productions specifically crafted to align with the west london imprints heritage for house at the deeper end of the spectrum. cloaked in hardware reverb, a-side >benedict< takes deep house to the doors of driving dub-techno, while >grace< represents a refined garage roller, more respective of loungins output in the early-2000s. over on the flip, rotterdams increasingly revered bruk-step lynchpin c.o.n.e converts grace into an industrious slab of mechanical grime, before the porto-based trikk applies his low-end house sensibilities to benedict by stripping it down into a slab of deep yet futuristic minimalism.

tm404 is a new concept from analogue mastermind andreas tilliander aka mokira (kontra-musik, raster-noton, type). tm404 uses a multiple set up of the classic roland machines tb-303, tb-606 and mc-202 to create a mesmerizing acidic techno-drone. tm404 will release a full-length album on kontra-musik in late january and we are very much looking forward. but before that we have another great release to present. kontra-musik 028 is by far our most radical release on so far. this is dance music really pushed the limit. what you are about to hear is the result of morphosis (morphine records) remixing tm404 using his favorite korg machines – the ms20 and the sq10. rabihs own words on the music: quite challenging and not really ordinary dance music. i believe in moving forward with things, with whatever chances and possibilities i have, it is my contribution to this world.

following on from a pair of extended players released in 2011 (passed me by / we stay together), andy stott returns to modern love with luxury problems, an 8 track album of new material recorded over the last 12 months. five of the tracks on the album feature the voice of alison skidmore, andys onetime piano teacher whom he hadnt seen since he was a teenager back in 1996. there was no grand gesture in mind, it just sort of happened – but after almost a year of studio work the result is really quite unlike anything you will have heard from him before.

following the s_w_z_k debut album, which came out on tresor records before the summer, david brown offers here further insights into the most recent developments of his new departure. receiving the help of long-time collaborator and friend richard davis, the duo continues its dive into the concrete and metallic landscapes found on their eponymous lp effort. the variant & empires ep however marks somewhat of a slight departure from the obscure experimental investigations previously undertaken. tc4 variant is a roaring number, aiming specially at the dancefloor and taking the duos energy to its highest point, while second city of the empire intimately unveils the deeper side of their enterprise.

paper recordings continue their journey back to plastic with another vinyl release once again proving why they remain one of uks best loved labels. jamie l is a mysterious figure of undisclosed origin and history who fits in to the moodymann / theo parrish mold of heavy future disco, which his new production >(what we saw) in the burg< nails. it is a heavy leftfield groove laid over broken house beats with a filtered bass, samples and leftfield vibe. the detroit pad creeps up to the break and filters in and out as the track works its way through for locked down dance floor business. next up, havana candy breaks out the analogue and takes things deeper and techier. with a rolling bass and tweaking acid line, it cuts to a rhodes before filtering down and riding back to the heads down groove. cottam steps up for paper for the first time and demonstrates what all the fuss is about with a very special mix. clocking in at 9.41 it is deep, tough soulful house that crosses the 4/4 divide from techno to disco and deep house to soul.

two of the uks most formidable names in techno step into the ring for a head to head on theory. stephen brown is a man who certainly needs no introduction, and his knack of channeling the best of detroit innovation and adding his own distinct flavours shows no sign of letting up. on >fuego< and >polar< brown takes us further into the jacking zone, his signature lush melodies driving up the rear until they envelope the tracks in a haze of deep and emotive vibrations, but never letting up on the tough rhythms. ben sims is drafted in to remix both tracks, leaving slicing shards of sound and roughing up the beat on his remix of >polar<, before delving into a hard-funk take of >fuego<. big business from two keepers of the true techno flame.

before the release of his debut album on ki, monokle throws in an ep to show us what to expect. the beautiful track >swan< pretty much describes perfectly what monokle means when he says that simple rhythms and catchy beats get him bored quickly. being influenced by the music of the british imprint warp for example, the sankt petersburg based artist has pretty much developed his own interpretation of well, what should it be called? it is monokle! he has his very own aesthetic approach to music and has a very fine hand for sublime melodies and atmospheres. on the b side he teams up with his friend and partner milinal. >swan< gets a proper retouch by daisuke tanabe, who shares monokles deep soundscapes and is just the right member of the ki family to get his hands on this ep.

electro rapide is a collection of rare and unreleased archive material from the studio archives of legendary french orchestral pop composer jean-claude vannier. taken from the period before and during his revered creative relationship with serge gainsbourg (reaching their halcyon with 1971s histoire de melody nelson) these tracks reveal a rare glimpse of vannier’s self-initiated instrumental projects that were crowbarred between an airtight studio diary as one of frances most in demand arrangers and composers of the post mai-68 generation...

on faaveelaa jameszoo displays the kind of brazen ingenuity that youth affords by drawing inspiration from dancehall before finding its edge to craft an entirely new take on the genre and using that to paint a colourful sonic picture of what he imagines a favela might look like. sounds mad? it is, in a good way. by his own admittance the picture he paints is also a bit messy, yet there is beauty in chaos. as for the inspiration, it can sometimes be hard to hear at first though anyone familiar with jamaicas dancehall tradition will recognise the instantly catchy quality of faaveelaas riddims.

joyce muniz is a vienna-based, brazilian dj, vocalist and producer. muniz was introduced to us by maya jane coles and we are proud to increase our female talent at the label. joyce is currently one of the leaders of a new style which fuses european club sounds with rhythmic influences from south america and the caribbean. she has collaborated with stereotyp, louie austen and munk, and her solo outings for exploited have been getting rave reviews

the new bomb on echocord colour comes from echologist aka brendon moeller. brendon already did releases on echocord and echocord colour before, but this time its with one of his other monikers echologist. buzz factory is a super deep powerfull monster for the dancefloor, comes in 2 other versions aswell, one remixed by brendon moeller himself and the other version by a good old friend of echocord, the one and only pole, aka stefan betke. stefan also did the mastering bendons pursuit of all things subby and dubby continues on buzz factory. its a forever evolving exploration and experiment. getting better via practicing what he does is the key that opens the door to transcendence, the high, the rush. desire, adventure, the challenge, the satisfaction, joy. seeking joy. seeking pleasure. buzzing!

micatone come off with a true masterpiece of sophisticated pop with their new and fifth album >wish i was here< (released in march 2012). not only the music press and feuilletons but also old devoted and newly found fans agree: micatone never sounded better before. the second offspring off the album is a 2-tracker with two very special remixes. label mate stee downes takes on >sweet pain< as if it was his own track and kicks out a vivacious deep house stormer. there is no doubt that this remix will be in every bag of those djs that put some more emotions on the floor. the second remix was orderd in italy - in bologna to be exact. keemani and alex ferratti just started their new project blue mondays and now – with their rework of >just a boy< – promisingly launch their career to become the next in-demand remixers. they dont just lay a vocal track over a pre-programed beat, but use all of their devotion, accuracy and finesse to turn an already astonishing pop song into an anthem for everlasting nights. it is like preparing the perfect sugo: simmer exquisite ingedients for days until your mouth is watering. perfetto!

spring toy is an elegant a-side crafted with classic house influences in mind. meandering casually before beginning its ascent into deepspace territory, detroit styled synth lines and intricate melodies hang above a funky undertone which hooks from the off. continuing its cosmic trajectory, the ep’s b-sides set their coordinates into dub techno regions. lindberg’s quirky astral synths and futuristic soundscape trigger a dream-like state…think sci-fi beams and interplanetary navigation and you’re half way there. shudder is a more up-tempo sonic excursion, propelled by its galloping techno rhythms. the ebb and flow of trippy pads and crystalline waves play to the senses.
