holy grail of memphis boogie funk! subway featuring wave is an absolute gem of a mini lp and is reissued for the first time ever on past due records. original copies are known to fetch in the thousands... produced by lee moore with stax musicians, including guitarist michael toles, keyboard player lester snell, and drummer willie hall, all members of the isaac hayes movement. he also hired bassist ray griffin who recorded numerous sessions for both stax and malaco records.

betinos records proudly presents its third release: an ep by the very sharp collective the big hustle. the band founded in 2014 by bass player and composer sébastien levanneur, brings together 70’s old school funk with the hippest actual sound with influences spanning from steely dan to snarky puppy, from mandrill to lettuce and from herbie hancock (manchild era) to soulive.

the album’s title makes a direct and heartfelt reference to a real-life l.a. musician, long presumed dead, who resurfaced online in 2007 after 35 reclusive years to pen his autobiography and tragic life story in a series of blogs and youtube tirades. “his book and life resonated with me to such a degree,” pink states, “that i felt a need to dedicate my latest record to him.”

the third and final part of the jacob f. desvarieux anthology on endless flight brings two more hot productions of the fabled french zouk veteran with roots in guadeloupe. the tune “rifyx” is taken from desvarieux’s 1985 album “oh madiana” and delivers arresting jazz-funk and zouk-suspense enlarged with touching horns, synth-enthusiasm and longing female vocals. the second song comes from the paris based, west cameroon born singer tala, produced by desvarieux for tala’s album “mother africa” in 1982. also here desvarieux tuned the synthesizers odd and edgy to let them dance with an afro styled rhythm. above all tala sings sexy with a chorus of girls while percussions go crazy and the sounds of horns are longing for the sky. on top of everything endless flight asked again the japanese producer kuniyuik to edit a desvarieux track. he chose “rifyx” and tuned it into an epic soulful eight minutes long dream house anthem that funks all dancers crazy. hotter than hot stuff here!

mytron & ofofo make multi culti great again with a full, fun, five-track ep. little is known about this freaky duo whose sound straddles opposing polarities, merging organics and synthetics, joining traditional textures with futuristic finish. these are sample-licious tracks that also feature original vocals and raw analog synths. they are noisy but clean, rough but smooth, soft and crunchy. on one hand, it s mad-cap multicultural disco funk as on si jambo (translated loosely as all good ) and 2tac onana, and on the other it s cybernetic weirdness and italo-inflected electro with non-binary joys on the venus holodeck and czary mary, which sounds like it could be the flip-side to sharivari. in between this binary divide is something for the mind, a brilliant piece of pop music that springs lightly into your brain with catchy bleeps, incredible vocoder, and a beat guaranteed to get the braindance party started.

d-operation drop is a 6-man crew from cesena, italy with a strong and growing catalog of sound system killers, from orthodox steppers to dubstep abstractions and strange hybrids of the two. recent releases on moonshine, artikal, and lion charge have cemented their position, and we are thrilled to invite them into the zamzam fold with two chunks of 140 weight. “warrior march” opens with a mesmerizing pad that immediately draws the unsuspecting into a unique soundworld and doesn’t let go til the runout groove. a smeared, chopping-block snare, deep subsonic rumblings, swung percussion, massed yet minimal horns make a darkly coiled track, menacing yet full of funk and movement. “sativa team” captivates just as deeply with fewer moving parts, loping drums and leaden percussion, churning bassline, chopped and glitched ja-voices and sound tape, and ominous, clipped horns that wobble with tape delay in a strange airless void. brooding yet cathartic, tripped out but fully physical, with both tunes d-operation drop display their total control over a restrained and powerful palette.

two more recent 70s, modern soul-style discoveries were issued last year on the “hotlanta soul 4” kent cd. lorraine johnson verified that the sumptuous vocals on ‘a love like yours’ were indeed hers, though again the author of the song is unknown. deep velvet give a much more harmonious take on ripple’s ‘complain to the clouds’, transforming it from a funk growl into a true soul song.

weiss blasts off via “brain fever”, where raw, mind-altering arpeggio bass, fuzzy drum machine hits, spacey chords and alien electronics thrust our hero skywards. think of it as techno for funk-fuelled, italo-disco loving astronauts whose journey to the end of the universe is only just underway. this intergalactic funk blueprint is explored further on the deeper and more melodious “you want a cigarette”, where weiss’s vocoder vocals wrap themselves around mutant tb-303 lines, rush-inducing chords and clattering machine percussion. on “space ghetto (booty)”, our hero celebrates the discovery of previously unknown worlds in the only way he knows how. with kaleidoscopic, full-throttle electronic motifs and funk-fuelled synth-bass to the fore, weiss offers his own unique take on electrofunk. pleasingly fuzzy and tightly wrapped in the syncopated drum machine handclaps of ghetto-house, it’s a typically far-sighted and attractive proposition.

superstrong is the third single to be taken from max sedgleys supremely funky album >suddenly everything<. having won the accolade of having one of the remixes of 2010 on itunes – max steps up his game with the release of superstrong. fusing funk, disco and house on the original version – max shows why he remains at the top of his game as an in demand producer and remixer.
superstrong remixes come courtesy of disco dons faze action who deliver a killer mid tempo nu-disco bomb with beautifully melancholic piano chords underpinned by a driving bassline. labelmates basement freaks turn in a raw funky breakbeat banger to complete the package. vocals come courtesy of live band member tasita d mour herself a widely recognised soul diva with releases on the worlds best house labels including defected, azuli and purple.

before boogie funk had a resurgence in 2012, ruckazoid was dropping rare funk albums in 2004. his demos were floating around la, but it wasn’t until 2009 that breakbot remixed ruckazoid’s original “life’s fantasy”, which was later released in 2011 as an original track titled “fantasy” on ed banger records. fantasy became a breakout hit scoring a #1 single on itunes. in 2013 when daft punk released “get lucky” featuring pharrell, funk was officially back in the mainstream. those in the know knew breakbot & ruckazoid helped rekindle the funk flame worldwide. after all, the label ed banger is headed by busy p, and busy p managed daft punk. suprinsingly, ruckazoid did not tour with breakbot, opting to stay in the studio to record more albums. amazing lover being one of these albums, with love game becoming the lead track.

love light: this tune is a hard hitting atmospheric roller. it has a larger than life bassline backed by in your face amens. hints of mid 90’s metalheadz and good looking take you back to a happy place.
make it funky: this tune lives up to its name with jazz funk intro that eases you into the tune. then boom a funky reece bass and amens for days and some massive break downs oh gosh!. serious bizzness here.

mfms curious and utterly killer afro/belgian electronic project gets the re-whip by a bunch of current producers. the ep also includes the previously unreleased, veronika v02 (a synth bass heavy version of the compilation track, veronika 02).

in 2016 grimez brought some of cincinnati’s best musicians in the studio to record raw analog recordings using vintage gear. guitarist brad myers currently has a phenomenal jazz cd out “prime numbers.” organ/keyboard prodigy, j-skillz, is a frequent session musician for hi-tek. tim hensley is the drummer for the cliftones, a reggae band that is touring and receiving well deserved national notoriety. the remaining musicians all have degrees in jazz and perform in many shows throughout cincinnati.
