over the years, lo recordings has taken pride in exploring a wide and broad range of sounds, genres and styles. to mark 20 years of lo recordings, we are taking a fresh and bold approach with our output to further explore the accelerating and refined developments in electronic music today. this is the first of our new phase of releases, a collaborative project between the two titans mr. g and k15. ‘a learning curve’ is exactly as the title suggests, an educational experience to un- derstand each other musically and technically, and to explore new territories and schools of thought. as avid users and fans of the mpc, as well as being extremely busy, both mr. g and k15 were given the same samples dug out of the lo recordings archives to each create a track which would remotely display their techniques and methods. this was quick- ly adopted to be the theme in a series of three releases to come out throughout the year from the pair. the results come in the form of mr. g’s mesmerising ‘navigate’ and k15’s introspective ‘the guilt within’, two very individual tracks in their own rights. ‘navigate’ is instantly recognisable as the work of its creator, armed and ready to bring the dance floor to hypnotic heights. with its rough and gritty sound, driving kick & synth stabs, and hauntingly majestic keys, we are thrown into peak of the night. on the flip, ‘the guilt within’ takes a turn to more ominous terri- tories, crafting an atmosphere on the other end of the spectrum to ‘navigate’. a beautiful and delicate journey carried along by light skipping percussion, immersive sweeping pads and a puls- ing sub which all come together to take the listener deep inside themselves.

new band name, new lp, the former max graef band toured and worked on new music all year. musical progress, and the impression of not enough edge and rawness in a lot of recent music, inspired and motivated a majority of the recording. the band has grown as a unit and wrote a lot of material together this year in late night sessions. during 2 weeks of recording the new songs in the studio the goal was to try all sorts of instruments, amps and effects and be open to any combination of sounds. furthermore, they and engineer lutz fahrenkrog-petersen tried to capture and maintain the raw feeling of the live recordings using almost exclusively analog pedals and racks as well as keeping the editing of the recordings to a minimum. although bands like et cetera (wolfgang dauner), embryo or xhol have heavily infuenced max graef and his band, the result turned out very original ranging from distorted jazz-rock to experimental soul, electronic percussion workouts to free sound experiments and psychedelic rock. with some tracks being around 14 minutes long, it is better to let the music speak for itself though.

new kid felix leifur made quiet a stir with his debut release on dirt crew last year. the icelandic juggernaut comes from the striving reykjavik music scene and is working closely with the lagaffe tales guys on building a new northern house empire. since his debut hes been working hard on creating a more varied vision of his unique lo slung hip hop approach to house music. with this ep he offers six new outings that have one thing in common, very warm and moody sounds ranging from disco through jazz and hip hop. were certain that he will continue to further cement his name in the coming years and were looking forward to working with him on plenty of exciting projects. opening with eyelids, felix delivers a rough, deep and dark house cut with broken beats, warped piano loops and twisted sampling throughout. classy has a smoky jazz feeling, kept tight with clever beat programming while evolving around a catchy sax motif. our personal fav is the title track, in general, a stunning broken beat house jam, smooth and loose, with swirling keys and a funk flavoured bass. the b-side begins with midwinter, a dance floor gem on a straight up junket. its deep, forward moving and bass driven, much like his track feels like that featured on our deep love compilation in 2016. yet another highlight for us is apollo, theres not many records out there that sound quite like this, thoroughly warped and contorted, depraved strings and a hypnotising rhodes arc and strain until the bass drops and it all falls in place psychedelic beauty! he closes with mine, a dope lo fi hip hop beat that casually wraps our ears, an ice cold soul infused piece.

tucked away in a now not-so-quiet corner of south east london, wholemeal have been quietly, unobtrusively getting shit done. wholemeal music’s freshman release hits the shelves this month featuring two cuts from yam records boss tom esselle and a hoofing remix from fellow south-londoner west norwood cassette library. skilfully treading the line between house, techno, and jazz, the a-side, until she spoke is a superlative exercise in light-touc h sampling and devastatingly effective rhodes work. it shuffles then stomps, hypnotises then elates, bringing together disparat e threads to create something for the head and the heart. the title track, garibaldi, maintains the light-touch sampling thread and then takes it to a whole new plane of drum-driven dancefloor detonation. twisting chord hits whirl around a savage interplay between bass and drums before dropping back to an elemental pounding, bypassing the brain and heading straight for the feet. long time wholemeal friend and serious contender for the nicest man in music award bob wncl has very kindly picked up garibaldi by the scruff of the neck, grafted an enormous pair of junglist balls onto it and kicked it screaming across t he dancefloor. this is about as peak-time as it gets. wait for the wall of bass after the second drop, its enough to stop you breathing.

groovepressure is excited to be re-releasing two tracks from the first ever groovepressure release. resonators is groovepressure honcho robin ball and long time school friend salman montiero. made in 1999 in a very small studio in robin s house, robin remembers -getting them pressed and taking them to the shops i loved in london to see if they would sell them and getting a really good reaction from the shop staff. not that it was going to be a big commercial success or anything like that, more because the tracks had a unique sound and i think still do today. the underground scene then was a lot more freestyle but even in that atmosphere it was an unusual release. since then it s been one of the most sort after releases from the groovepressure back catalogue. it s an exciting time to be re-releasing this with the re-emergence of the label. booma and shuzzbuzz have been re-mastered and remixed by robin ball.

for the first release coming in 2017 macadam mambo strikes very hard with a very special ep of radical dance music by the german band the blech revisited by hambourg’s based artist wosto. the blech released 6 lp between 1985 and 1996. their albums have become a treasure-trove of extravagant, groovy dance hall artistry. the forcefulness with which the blech flung their conviction from the stage into the audience was at once hypnotic, irritating and erotic. here wosto has selected two tracks from the zip zip lp originally released in 1987 (nichts wie vorher and zip zip) and one from the ich wollte meine schuhe zerschneiden lp (die einame trane) released in 1989, and transform them into strong powerfull dancefloor cuts. be sure of the efficient of the product, no need to talk more, let the music speak by itself. special mention for the magnificient artwork of lyons based artist hugo charpentier from the mauvaise foi collective

utopus is ion d s project that deals with tehno heresies, not-minimal and fragmented melancholy. ion d is the ubiquitous main character of future nuggets standing as a producer behind many entities like steaua de mare, raze de soare, australopitecus oltensis, co-producing delusion men and appearing under different cameos in both volumes sound of the unheard from romania. on p-balans imprint utopus will endevour with club-oriented laboratory work, keeping intact the delics of each genre compressed in the amalgan. set yourselves up for some balanced grooves augmented by unfinished melodies, abstract dramaturgy and very serious tehnodelic motors.

after a very successful label launch last year with in aeternam vale - “self destruct” ep, linda records returns with another straight talking, analog fuelled 10”. this time welcoming aboard berlin based russian artist alexey volkov. his three track ep “cold blooded genius” comes finely presented on transparent red ten inch vinyl (limited pressing). whilst staying true to its current white label feel, this time linda s trademark eyes, also a fitting red. on the a side at 45rpm the title track “cold blooded genius” and on the b side two tracks will spin at 33rpm, “unfriendly nation” & “curtains of flesh”. we hate to categorise and attempt to summarise what these pieces of music craft sound like into words, we’ll leave you to indulge for a short time to the machine noise of the highly regarded talent that is alexey volkov.

we open the new year with the second part of the remixes for thomas 25th anniversary with some awesome work by kardinal, who took the original drax track phosphene to new dimensions, the everlasting energy man butch with his new remix of the very successful silent breed sync in tune, a more than formidable remix by our man in the uk gez varley aka g-man (also founder and member of lfo) and another bangin remix by mr- shokh from berlin !

coling strange lands on lies.. going to hit hard, this one..tip! collin strange has a long and storied history in the new york city underground music scene of the nineties. from owning a record shop in the east village, to working at distributers, to playing in bands of all sorts, to producing music alone, strange was around at one of the most vibrant (and transitional) times in the l.e.s., just on the cusp of guliani s culture crackdown which choked the life out of the city, forcing many to leave. currently located in seattle, strange has picked up where he left off years ago plugging in the gear and churning out blistering acid cuts with a very d.i.y. edge that brings to mind drop bass network, unit moebius, or free party french acid of old. coming full circle these tracks are completely at home on l.i.e.s. and will undoubtedly thrash any soundsystem in sight. play at maximum volume for total disruption
