(pulse radio) with dj names like take it easy and friso, it s probably to be presumed that german duo adana twins don t take themselves too seriously. that tongue in cheek attitude could be heard on their first productions and remixes. it s now almost almost three years later and the twins music vision is constantly developing

rounding off the vinyl series that accompanies themas label-defining strength in numbers compilation, part 4 downsizes from 12 inch to 7 inch to present two distinctive jams that show some of the farthest reaches of the new york imprints sound. laurine frost may be best known as part of the nonconformist house and techno scene of europe through releases on perspectiv, sharingtones and nervmusic, but on this special creation for thema he makes the perfect tribute to the city that gave rise to the label, with a little help from the racy diatribe of amiri baraka on “your house”. by way of a truly special finale for the series, minneapolis maverick dj slip graces the label with an all-too rare appearance, taking an altogether more primal approach on “x7” that channels his years spent conjuring up next level techno for missile, music man and more into a taut and punchy electro excursion infected with tricked out effects and seductive sci-fi noir atmospherics. it’s the perfect example of the freaky fringes thema has comfortably reached to over the course of the last forty releases.

ovc is from chicago where he has been producing, and playing out electronic stuff in one form or another for like ten years including a lot of gigs and some residencies for example in sonotheque. but it s only the last three or four years hes gotten into the deeper side of techno and recently into the deeper/dubbier techno style, his music is a little raw as he does it all in hardware just live to two-track. he weaves together deep narratives out of a collection of blinking sequencers and drum machines, always assisted by a generous dose of reverb and delay. ovc releases with us on telrea the first 3 tracker we have done. all 3 tracks being on the calmer side of electronic music, rich in depth of sound and motion.

harry klein records is back. the first contribution comes from giorgia angiuli. born and raised in the deep south of italy, giorgia is a classic example for a inimitable talent when it s about combining different styles of music. either playing live on stage or recording in the studio – her unconventional manner of reception and rendition, same on stylistic as on technical issues, allows her to create unique moments through her music. in this sense her forthcoming ep, named nebula , is a contribution to the multiple diversity which marks the electronic scene nowadays more than ever. it s taking us on a journey through the facets of heart-warming house, straightforward techno, and the fields of intense and dreamy pop, always reminding us of what s really essential in music.

another fine example of funky-soul at its very best. while the a-side is highly regarded within the northern soul scene, the b-side is the tune why funk 45 collectors are after this beauty. bot sides were recorded in the early 1970s and pressed on a small press run on 45rpm single. original copies are nowadays very hard to find and due to the outstanding quality sought after by record collectors worldwide.

organic textures, hypnotism and melancholy feature heavily in marino s sound and are once again evident in the percolate ep. as its name suggests, the title track bubbles with dancefloor tension whilst its tight groove never quite reaches boiling point. can t feel, on the flip, is more of the same. deep, atmospheric and understated, a perfect example of marino s blossom talent.

teddy douglas, dj spen and maurice fulton don their those guys alias and invite jean-luc ponty to jump head first into their sampler down in baltimore to show some love, love, love and the result is this amazing 12 inch originally released on basement boys records in 1996. a truly deep beauty of a track that utilises pontys violin from 1983s *computer incantations for world peace* to the absolute maximum in over ten minutes of building bliss, *love love love* is an under the radar classic, a true gem and a real treat for all djs to play. the alternate mixes and bonus beats are also great, dj spens balto doo doo mix for example, keeping it thoroughly b-more with the old school breakbeats and snatches of the original sample jumping through the mix from time to time make this an essential weapon in any record bag! this 12 inch has been re-mastered and re-pressed in conjunction with the basement boys.

“inverso” is the new vinyl sub-label of kript records, whose concept is based on the meaning that the word assumes in different fields, in mathematics for example the “inverso” ratio means that the product of the variables always remain constant. but the word “inverso” is also a concept that leads to an exact opposite of what it assumes. these two meanings of the word “inverso” inspire all the tracks of the label, characterized by a -noisy and distorted- sound, where symmetry and asymmetry live together and where analog source and analog processing give a great touch of depth.

next up on visionquest is the second single from wareikas righteous and raw wternal album. all little things, here in its club mix incarnation, is another example of the trios hefty musicianship and unbridled eccentric energy, where jazzy textures and pulsating grooves build up with a rising melody to the powerful vocal drop. on the first remix visionquest & nikko gibler develop expansive piano melodies alongside an elasticated bassline and vocal snippets. fred p reigns over the b-side with his raw, deep hypnotic reshape and warmed up spirit dub. this is a distinctly diverse remix package from a rich artistic source.

hot on the heels of bmm 002 comes the latest instalment of the birdsmakingmachine series – bmm 003 – a package combining their signature sine-bass laden grooves, steel drums and oblique melodies. >antonios swing<, as the title indicates, literally swings listeners into its rhythm with dark vocal snippets layered onto soft stabs and eerie melodies. >woodpeckers<, on the a2, takes a more linear approach, an effective dj-friendly tool that will please dancefloors in the late hours of the night/early hours of the morning. on the flip, in >silk road< we find a captivating, yet mysteriously funky minimal house affair that builds and builds until finally erupting following the break. the ep is rounded-off with >dead lines<, a broken themed galloping of bass kicks fused into moody melodies and reverberated far cries, resembling a genuine excavation into the depths of house music – another example that the birds are always trying to redefine the genres boundaries.

a 4-track package traversing house and techno. first up jour de fete, a reference to the black and white 1940s french comedy – perhaps a clue to mr georget… one things for sure this is toe-tapping house. taking its time to perfectly build up the progression towards smooth outbursts of wailing sirens. 6eme etape is another fine example of get-up-and-dance house, theres plenty of driving drum kick and jazzy key chords, nicely pulled back and interrupted, to drop back in again with a renewed energy. poil de renard on the other hand immediately marks out its territory among the german minimal and micro house space. strong, syncopated beats laced with chopped up whispers and unknown reverberations, this is tough! the 103 mix softens up the edges, a subtle underlying synth providing the mellowness – essentially your morning-after dub version.

lph whites latest is another made­for­the­club sureshot winner from label co­founder and ­owner jacques renault himself. if youve caught one of his sets around the world sometime this year, youve most likely heard the house banger? and consequently gone nuts. its impossible to resist the temptations of the bombastic drums, fat bass, chopped up vocals, and dubby synth hooks included within. a shining example of renault doing what he does best.

if chicago and detroit are the cities in which house and techno were born and raised, it was in italy circa 1990 that this delirious party music experienced a piano-driven coming of age. so far, so spangled. but while that may be the official story, there are other italian narratives too. take francois le roy and nanni for instance - two djs and producers from southern italy for whom, in the early nineties, the likes of aphex twin, autechre and air liquide were important, alongside the machine funk of detroit and the immersive soundtracks of the ambient generation. both artists are steeped in underground club music, and their new release on shabby doll records is a fine example of tough, tech-edged house. the *crossing roads* ep features four tracks that showcase their melodic yet relentless groove, they may be based in milan, but on this record, the influence of detroit, chicago and new york runs deep.

since day one, radiq has been showing an affinity for the afro-centric funkiness and carefully-honed sound design of modern days minimal music. as in many of his previous tracks, all six songs of >vida noir< has this certain kind of unyielding quality - long, hypnotic grooves with muted kick drum set the stage for more emancipated experiments in texture and sound design. on >a long hot summer break<, for example, the effect is utterly obvious as kicking its ass into gear with syncopated drums and strain of warm chords before animated vocal sample slips in like fingerprint. while deeply seductive interplay of those chugging percussion gives way to delighted horn of >a-dieu<, warm chord and acoustic guitar of >calling< is perfect example for radiq’s masterful sound and texture. >machine codes modified< has rather restrained structure for him, but tightly woven drums speaks eloquently about its carefully arranged funkiness and dance floor functionality. despite their repetitiveness, its surprising how well these productions forming cohesive solidarity as an album. presumably, it owes a lot to wide tonal vocabulary which is radiqs hallmark - these tracks has something concentrated, vivid qualities. this album sits just at the edge of the dance floor, but also performs its exceptional strength on intense home listening. dusky synth and truncated surge of bass of >vida noir< constructing something dark, before closing this album with modulated afro-acoustic guitar and deep falsetto voice (by the producer himself) of >rondo<. this album offers up an engaging and comprehensive amalgamation from the inquisitive sound by the maestro
